Murder suspect arrested at Shoreline Costco Thursday

Shoreline Costco

By Diane Hettrick

According to published news reports, the man thought to be responsible for the disappearance and death of a woman, Leticia Martinez-Cosman, after their date at the Mariners game on March 31, 2023, was arrested at the Shoreline Costco on Thursday, April 13.

Police were searching for Brett Gitchell after he was identified as leaving the stadium with Martinez-Cosman after the game.

He was later identified as the person who robbed the jewelry department at the Seattle Costco on April 4. Costco staff in Shoreline had been alerted, so the Shoreline jewelry department staff notified security when they saw him in the store.

A massive police response ensued with staging areas at the pawn shop across the street and at the Days Inn, both on Aurora.

He was taken into custody without any shots fired. He has been charged with multiple felonies and is being held on $5million bail.

Police had been on the scene earlier that morning, responding to an attack at the same pawn shop where they set up for the Costco arrest. (See previous article)

Plan for Fun at this Year’s Strawberry Festival

Saturday, April 15, 2023

Children’s Parade in 2014. Photo by Bob Pfeiffer

Plans are coming together for the annual Richmond Beach Strawberry Festival on Saturday, May 6, 2023!

This beloved annual event has been on hiatus during COVID and we are thrilled to bring back some traditions and create some new ones. For neighbors who have never attended the Strawberry Festival, expect an afternoon of live music, food trucks, kids activities, and of course, strawberry shortcake!

Children’s Rainbow Parade

This year’s theme for the Children’s Parade is Rainbow! Dress in your favorite color and march the perimeter of the park led by our very own Shorewood High School drumline. Start planning your costume and props for your wagon, scooter, tricycle, or stroller. (No bikes or pets, please.)

To participate, meet at the rainbow balloon arch on the west side of the park by the playground. Staging begins at 11:30am and the parade begins at 11:45am. The parade route is two laps around the path (parental support encouraged).

We can’t wait to see a rainbow of colors light up our event!

Live Music Lineup

Tom Petersen has lined up some great Seattle-based bands for the event that are sure to get you dancing. BroHamM is a funk, soul, R/B band made up of three brothers Larry, Curtis, and Len Hammond. Country Dave and the Pickin’ Crew’s honky tonk tunes will be followed by Commander Mojo, a classic 70s horn rock band. All three bands were lined up to play in the canceled 2020 Festival and we’re so happy to bring them back.

Rounding out the lineup will be Whey, a Shorewood High School neo-funk band that we can’t wait to see up on stage. Between sets, be sure to pop into the library for the Friends of Richmond Beach Library book sale!

Help Us Make it Happen

These beloved community events can’t happen without you. Please consider sponsoring or volunteering to make the Strawberry Festival a success.

Fighters in Eastern Ukraine - Heroes' Café presentation

Carl Larson shows where he served in eastern Ukraine. The ORKS are what they call Russians.
Story by Jean Albertson,
Retired school teacher, Seattle Schools
Photos provided by Carl Larson, except as noted

I attended Heroes' Café Shoreline last Tuesday, April 11, 2023 and heard an American service man named Carl Larson, an US Army veteran of the Iraq war.

Larson's German comrade
was killed by artillery fire
He had just returned from an eight-month duty in Ukraine as a member of the International Legion for Defense of Ukraine.

It was a privilege to meet him, and in doing so, put a face to all the news I hear, that can otherwise seem somewhat ambiguous.

The photos he took on the front lines while there showed a portrayal of what is really happening. He shows the face of a fellow soldier from Germany in his unit that was hit by artillery and killed, after 45 minutes of trying to cling to life.

A French soldier eating a tin of sardines
There is another of a soldier from France sitting in a trench eating from a can of sardines (to him that was an absolute luxury.)

If it weren’t for these heroic men and women holding back forces on enemy lines, we could be living in similar situations as those European countrymen.

Instead of deciding what to have for dinner tonight, we could be asking, “Will I have dinner tonight?”

As citizens in the US, we live privileged life styles in this free country and many feel entitled to them.

Members of International Legion for Defense of Ukraine, they come from all over the world.
So many lives unfortunately, were sacrificed for the freedoms we have today. I for one know it’s all too easy to sit back while listening to the news as others do, and think of it as “their problem.”

 Carl’s Ukrainian Army Shoulder Patch
Western European countries know all too well from history (and the present) the threats close to them and what the future may bring.

It all appears distant to us. The world has seemingly gotten smaller, and there may be a potential knocking at the back door; that our freedom could be lost as well.

5 Tips to Stay Financially Fit

Stacey Black, BECU
Lead Financial Educator
During busy seasons of life, it may be difficult to prioritize things like completing your annual physical, going to the gym or conducting a financial check-up.

However, just like training for a marathon, becoming financially fit doesn’t happen overnight – it requires ongoing discipline and regularly assessing your financial situation to ensure you understand the steps needed to set yourself up for success, both now and in the future.

Below are five tips to help you stay financially fit from Stacey Black, BECU Lead Financial Educator.

5 Tips to Stay Financially Fit

Tip 1: Take Your Financial Temperature

An important first step in your financial fitness journey is gaining a holistic view of your personal financial situation. This may include knowing how much you have in savings, understanding your general spending habits and seeing what debt you may owe (i.e., student loans, car loans, mortgages). Your financial institution can help connect you with a professional who is readily available to kick-off this conversation.

Tip 2: Set Your Financial Goals

Everyone’s financial goals are different. They may range from paying off student loans to buying a new car or saving for retirement. When creating short- and long-term financial goals, Black recommends setting milestones you can realistically achieve within a shorter amount of time, understanding that it’s okay to start small and build from there. Whether you’re simply getting into the habit of saving, building credit or considering debt pay-off strategies, make sure you write down your goals, understand when you want to complete them and prioritize them in order of necessity.

Tip 3: Gauge Your Spending Habits

A key aspect of financial fitness is being able to stick to a budget. A good place to start is to monitor your monthly spending to see how closely it aligns with your monthly expenses and income. If you’re spending more than you need to, identify what you’re buying and think of ways to cut back on unnecessary purchases. Also ensure you’re tracking your progress against your weekly and monthly goals, as well as your projected completion dates. And remember, unexpected moments in life aren’t a matter of if but when, so make sure your goals include building a savings account for unforeseen emergencies.

Tip 4: Check Your Credit Report

Your credit report contains information about the status of your credit accounts and your loan payment history. A good credit score is critical to qualifying for loans at the best possible rates. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) recommends checking your report at least once a year to make sure it is up to date and correct. For more information, visit BECU.org.

Tip 5: Tap into Your Financial Resources

Check to see if your financial institution provides free financial education resources. For example, BECU offers free financial education articles, webinars, self-paced courses and member-exclusive resources like its Financial Health Check program. Bite-sized modules from EverFi are also available in a range of topics, depending on your personal financial goals.

Consumer Advocacy Team recovered over $10 million for insurance consumers since January 2023

From the Washington State Insurance Commissioner

OLYMPIA, Wash. — Have you had an insurance claim denied or received an offer that was less than you felt you deserved?

Our team of highly trained insurance experts recovered more than $10 million for Washington insurance consumers since January 1, 2023. They may be able to help you, too!

Thousands of consumers contact our office every year with questions or complaints about all types of insurance coverage. Our Consumer Advocacy team can look at your insurance policy, explain your rights, and in many cases, contact your insurance company on your behalf.

“As the insurance regulator, companies and insurance agents are required to respond to us and explain their actions or decisions,” said Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler. “Our services are free, impartial, and available to everyone in Washington state. You might not need them today, but we’re always here to help when you do.”

We understand how insurance policies work and the laws that protect you. We can’t help in every situation and our authority has its limits, but in the last three months, we investigated more than 2,600 complaints and recovered $10,276,845 for Washington insurance consumers.

Here are a few consumers we have helped so far this year:
  • A Bremerton man thought he was automatically enrolled in his health plan, but instead had lost his vision coverage and had his claims denied. After our investigation, the company agreed to cover his charges. We also made the company check similar claim denials, resulting in 5,000 policyholders regaining coverage.
  • A consumer from Snohomish filed a complaint with us when their company failed to settle their auto claim after their vehicle was totaled. We helped them recover $32,687 for the value of their vehicle.
  • An elderly man from Brier waited five months after a fire to get help from his insurance company, confined to only a single room while he tried to make repairs. Two days after they received his complaint from our office, the insurer paid him $20,000. And within a month, they reimbursed him $140,000 for his expenses.
  • We helped a woman from Hoquiam appeal an air ambulance claim denial and get her $41,992 claim settled — plus interest.
  • We also helped a Sumner man get a $145,750 life insurance claim paid after many delays.

We can help you understand your rights, answer your questions, explain how to appeal a decision from your insurer, and, sometimes, advocate on your behalf.

In most cases, insurance is regulated by state governments and overseen by their state Insurance Departments.

Each department has a division specializing in helping consumers understand their rights and investigating their complaints. You can find your state's insurance department (naic.org) by searching the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) website.

Washington’s Office of the Insurance Commissioner employs 265 people, with 27 staff dedicated to consumer advocacy and education.

King County hosting online workshops for people interested in running for local offices, April 15 and April 24

Photo by Michael Carruth on Unsplash
King County is hosting several online candidate workshops providing information about filing for office in King County including submitting local voter’s pamphlet information, voter lists and data management, campaign sign regulations, and basic public disclosure information from the Public Disclosure Commission.

Workshops are on Saturday, April 15 from 11am to 1pm and Monday, April 24, 2023 from 3pm to 5pm.

Candidate registration with King County starts May 14 and ends May 19. Information about candidacy and running for office is available from the King County Elections Home Page. In addition, candidates must register with the Public Disclosure Commission. Link to key dates with the PDC.

City of Shoreline City Council Elections November 2023

Three (3) City Council positions are up for election/re-election in November 2023: Positions 2, 4, and 6. Candidates must follow the guidelines and registration dates as posted by King County (see above).

As the City's governing body, Shoreline's seven elected part-time City Councilmembers establish City policies and laws, adopt an annual budget, approve appropriations, contract for services and grant franchises.

City Councilmembers serve staggered four-year terms; roughly half the Council is up for election every two years. All Councilmembers are "at-large" meaning that they serve the City as a whole as opposed to a specific district.

The mayor is a councilmember, elected by the council. The mayor sets the agenda for council meetings and represents the city on formal occasions.

City of Lake Forest Park Mayor and Council Elections November 2023

The Mayor and three (3) Lake Forest Park City Council positions are up for election/re-election in November 2023: Positions 2, 4, and 6. Candidates must follow the guidelines and registration dates as posted by King County (see above).

The Mayor and seven City Councilmembers are part-time, non-partisan elected officials who serve four-year terms. Municipal elections are held in November of odd-numbered years and terms are staggered so that no more than four positions are up for election every two years. All Councilmembers are elected "at-large," meaning they serve the City as a whole, as opposed to a specific district.

Unlike Shoreline, LFP has a Mayor/Council form of government.

The City Council is the legislative body of the City.  It enacts laws and regulations, establishes policy direction for the City, establishes tax and fee rates, adopts an annual budget, grants franchises, approves contracts for services, and payment of all City moneys.

The mayor is the executive branch of the city government, elected directly by the voters of Lake Forest Park for a four year term. Mountlake Terrace public meeting to review proposals for public art

A new art installation is coming to Mountlake Terrace, and the public is invited to review the proposals.

Artwork will be a key part of a pedestrian plaza at the southwest corner of 236th Street SW and Van Ry Boulevard, across from future light rail.

A public meeting is set for 5:30pm Wednesday April 19, 2023 at MLT City Hall, 23204 58th Ave W Presentations will start at 6 p.m., with about 30 minutes for each artist’s proposal.

The city issued a Call For Artists in October, drawing 30 submissions. An artist selection panel then chose four finalists.

“We saw so many wonderful ideas, bringing in different perspectives from throughout the visual arts,” said Renee Norton, a Recreation Supervisor who is the staff liaison to the Arts Advisory Commission.
“For the public meeting, the finalists were invited to bring models, slideshows and other visual means. We hope people will attend, and through this process find a sense of ownership and connection with the chosen work.”

The Arts Advisory Commission will review the feedback from the meeting and make a recommendation to the City Council.

The future plaza, a 2,000-square-foot hardscaped area, is part of the city’s $5 million Transit Connection Corridor Project. A naming process for the pedestrian plaza will take place later this year, followed by construction in 2024.

NEMCo coordinated advanced training for area ham radio operators

In the case of a major disaster it is very likely that the only means of two-way communication will be ham radio operators.

This quarter, the NEMCo Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services (RACES) Chief Radio Officer, Jon Rumsey, coordinated two advanced amateur radio trainings in Winlink, an emergency radio messaging system used by organizations throughout the country, for both NEMCo and other area ham radio operators.

Area hams participated in basic and intermediate skill level training and had an opportunity for hands-on practice with their own equipment.

This training was followed by a three-day exercise coordinated by several of our experienced ham radio volunteers in various communications modes, including the popular VARA protocol.

This exercise was open to ham operators throughout the region to practice sending radio / computer messages throughout the area via the amateur radio system.

Operators from Mukilteo, Redmond, Bothell, Shoreline, Mercer Island, Wenatchee, and even Albuquerque, NM joined in contacting the net using Winlink protocols.

The ability to network with fellow hams throughout the region and beyond is critical in ensuring supplemental communications during emergencies when government resources are overwhelmed.

NEMCo is the Northshore Emergency Management Coalition of Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and Northshore Utility District.
