I Hate Hamlet now running at The Phoenix Theatre through April 30, 2023

Sunday, April 9, 2023

The Phoenix Theatre presents I Hate Hamlet, written by Paul Rudnik and directed by Keith Dahlgren.

THE QUESTION IS WHO YOU WANT TO BE… OR NOT BE.

The Phoenix Theatre is once again offering up a comedic twist on a classic!

Start your spring off right with a masterclass on the fear of live performance with I Hate Hamlet, through April 30, 2023.

Andrew Rally seems to have it all: celebrity and acclaim from his starring role in a hit television series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park.
There are, however, a couple of glitches in paradise.

Andrew’s series has been canceled; his girlfriend is clinging to her virginity with unyielding conviction; and he has no desire to play Hamlet.

When Andrew’s agent reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago in Andrew’s apartment. This prompts a seance to summon his ghost.

From the moment Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew’s life is no longer his own. Barrymore, fortified by champagne and ego, presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor’s destiny.
The action becomes more complicated with the entrance of Andrew’s deal-making friend from LA, offering Andrew a fabulous new TV deal worth millions of dollars. The laughs compound as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, his sword, a wild Barrymore spirit, and his fear of failing as Hamlet in Central Park.

Director Keith Dahlgren says "This is a play about the joy of theatre and performance, as well as the fear of it – and the fear is real. Anyone who has performed knows the dread of missing your cue, forgetting your lines, or looking like a wooden puppet up there in front of a crowd of people.”

However, I Hate Hamlet also communicates the beauty of the shared experience of live performance. “The thrill of getting a laugh… the silence of an audience as they listen closely… the warmth of applause.

After the previous three years of the pandemic, we need to gather together for this shared experience,” Dahlgren continued, “It’s pretty easy to direct, [the actors] all understand what they need to do and are having fun. So sit back and be transported to the 1990s and enjoy yourself!"

I Hate Hamlet, by Paul Rudnick, is directed by Keith Dahlgren and produced with permission of Dramatist Play Service, Inc.

Senate approves AG Ferguson, Gov. Inslee legislation banning sale of assault weapons

Ban on sale of assault weapons
OLYMPIA — Both chambers of the Washington State Legislature have now approved a historic ban on the sale of assault weapons in Washington state.

House Bill 1240, requested by Attorney General Bob Ferguson and Gov. Jay Inslee and sponsored by Rep. Strom Peterson, D-Edmonds, passed the House of Representatives on March 8, 2023 and the Senate on April 8, 2023 in historic votes.

Amendments in the Senate make a concurrence vote necessary in the House. The bill will head to Gov. Inslee for his signature after concurrence.

Ferguson first proposed a ban on the sale of assault weapons in 2017 in the wake of the 2016 mass shooting at a Mukilteo house party. The shooter used a military-style assault rifle and a high-capacity magazine. (See previous article) (See follow up article)

Peterson has sponsored the House version of the proposal every year Ferguson requested it. Sen. Patty Kuderer, D-Bellevue, also a longtime champion, sponsored the companion bill in the Senate.

“Stop and think for a moment that firearms are now the leading cause of death among children in the U.S.,” Kuderer said.

“Not traffic accidents. Not cancer or other illnesses. Not poisoning. Firearms. To ignore the seemingly endless instances of gun violence in our country would put us on the wrong side of history.

"These weapons of war have no place in our schools, places of worship, our streets or in our communities. Banning assault weapons marks a victory for common sense and will help us move toward a safer future for Washingtonians.”

“The Senate today put public safety above the interest of the gun lobby,” Ferguson said. “The devastation of mass shootings extends far beyond the casualties and injuries. Mass shootings traumatize entire communities. We must stop selling these weapons of war in Washington.”

“Time and again we’ve seen the carnage these weapons allow people to unleash on communities," said Inslee. 'Time and again we’ve watched the NRA and politicians defend, normalize and even celebrate these weapons. But now the time is here when the majority’s will prevails and we put the lives of our children first.”

Our nation is averaging well over one mass shooting every single day and have been for years,” Peterson said.
“Gun violence cuts short too many lives, leaves survivors with a lifetime of trauma and forces our kids to live every day with the fear of an active shooter. We need to do more to slow gun violence and with today’s vote, we are taking that next important step to protect the people we love.”

This legislation prohibits the sale, manufacture, and import of assault weapons in Washington state while allowing reasonable exemptions for manufacture and sale to law enforcement and the military. The legislation does not prohibit the possession of assault weapons.

Washington becomes the tenth state to adopt similar legislation banning these weapons. Multiple federal courts upheld these public safety laws as constitutional.

Small (and large!) gestures provide endless enjoyment - donations to Senior Center during the pandemic

Saturday, April 8, 2023

By Theresa LaCroix, Executive Director
Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center

It seems so long ago that we were completely shut in from our families, neighbors and friends due to the high level of risk associated with the COVID pandemic.

While the world hunkered down, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center was in full swing, providing what is termed Direct Emergency Services. This included services such daily meals home delivered, groceries donated to those housebound (lack of bus service), and a host of additional tasks as needed.

A serious concern that quickly became apparent to us was the negative effects of Social Isolation that we were all experiencing. For seniors who no longer have family members in the community, or they have passed away due to age, life became very mundane and lonely.

We are very appreciative to those who donated magazines and puzzles for us to share with those most isolated.

Ms GM Wiegand donated 1,000 disks of movies and TV shows to the Senior Center

One individual who truly made a difference was Shoreline resident Ms GM Wiegand, as she, along with her daughter, gathered her collection of DVD discs, catalogued each one and delivered them to the senior center.

In all, we received 476 DVDs, which provided a wide variety of interests from collections of Turner Classics and TV series such as Lucille Ball, to current day movies/TV series such as Sex in the City, and Planet Earth. Our library was filled with artists such as Sidney Poitier, Frank Sinatra, Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Gene Kelly, Bette Midler, Sissy Spacek and many more that we all know and love.

In addition there were boxed sets of television series, including the entire Star Trek universe, bringing the total donation to over a thousand disks.

Each week, we were able to choose 3-4 videos and deliver them to the homes of isolated seniors, providing them some lighthearted entertainment for the week.

The following week, we would exchange them for new videos, always sending a variety of interests. As we have moved past the pandemic, we continue to loan out the videos, providing affordable free entertainment for those on budgets.

We are most grateful for Ms. Wiegand's donation for the laughter, joy, tears, and pure enjoyment she brought into our homes.

Aegis Living Shoreline hosts Aegis Games 2023

Aegis staff and residents competed in Aegis Games 2023

While many athletes are in the throes of preparation for Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, residents and team members at Aegis Living Shoreline are already collecting their medals from Aegis Games 2023.

Aegis Living initially launched Aegis Games, an Olympic-inspired event series and tournament, as a fun way for residents and team members to come together with COVID-19 pandemic restrictions starting to lift in 2021. The highly anticipated Games are now a biannual event hosted across all 36 Aegis Living communities.

“Aegis Games is an amazing time for the residents and staff to come together and show their love and passion for competition as a united front,” noted Ashley Besmehn, General Manager at Aegis Living Shoreline.

Jumbo Jenga was a favorite

This year, more than 5,000 participants enjoyed 45+ events during the three-week event. With activities centered on mind, body, and spirit, residents and staff participated in everything from “Javelin” throws and ping pong to pie eating contests, mind-bending puzzle competitions, official Opening and Closing ceremonies, and more.

Favorite activities among Shoreline residents and staff were corn hole, Jumbo Jenga, and getting everyone in the spirit with community chants.

In addition to the core games, each community hosted two challenges.

Aegis residents took treats to Shoreline firefighters

The “Aegis Gives Back Challenge” gave Aegis residents and team members an opportunity to participate in local community service projects.

Aegis communities recognized firefighters, sorted food at a food bank, created essential bags for those experiencing homelessness, participated in beach and garden clean-ups, donated knitted hats and quilts for local organizations, and more.

You may have seen Shoreline residents at the local fire station delivering coffee and nibbles.

During the Games, residents also enjoyed the “Wellness Warriors Challenge.” Roughly 500 residents participated in daily feats of physical and mental strength to achieve better overall wellness. More than 2,000 hours of movement were logged – that’s equivalent to 83 days of moving!

“It was quite the experience,” shared Shoreline resident John Allen. “I enjoyed using every skill I’ve acquired through the years and am looking forward to it again!”

Watch out 2024 Olympians! You could have some stiff competition.

April 25, 2023 King County Ballot: Crisis Care Centers Levy

King County Executive Dow Constantine and a regional coalition of leaders announced a plan in September 2022 to address the behavioral health crisis by creating a countywide network of five crisis care centers, investing in the recruitment and retention of the community behavioral health workforce, and restoring the number of residential treatment beds in the region.

The plan would be funded by a nine-year property tax levy to treat immediate crisis and support long-term recovery and wellbeing.

In January of this year, the levy was approved by the King County Council to be submitted to voters for approval in April 2023.

“We must do more to deliver the behavioral health care people need, when they need it, especially in a moment of crisis.

"Today, we are telling the thousands of King County residents in behavioral health crisis, their families, and our communities – help is on the way,” said Executive Dow Constantine.

“The behavioral health system in this state has long been underfunded and underappreciated. The pandemic added further stress, and need is increasing even as we lose both treatment beds and qualified workers.
"Now, we can chart a path forward as a region – to create places where people can receive the effective care they need and begin their journey to recovery. This is an opportunity to make the generational investment our region needs.”

The proposal is estimated to cost the owner of a median-value home about $121 in 2024. The levy would continue through 2032, generating a total of $1.25 billion to stabilize and strengthen King County’s behavioral health crisis care system.

Financial impact for homeowners: John Wilson, King county assessor, has a tool to let individual property owners see the specific financial impact of levies. See it here to compute the financial impact of this specific levy.

Ballots for the levy are now arriving in local mailboxes, along with a local voters' pamphlet. Besides the Executive and County Council, the levy is endorsed by Seattle Metropolitan Chamber, MLK Labor Council, and SEIU 1199NW. The opposing statement is written by Tim Eyman, Jim Coombes, and Suzie Burke.

The Seattle Channel has a forum on the levy which can be viewed here.

For questions about this measure contact Dan Floyd, Deputy Director, King County Behavioural Health and Recovery Division, 206-263-8961, Daniel-DCHS.Floyd@kingcounty.gov

Stanford bill to elevate quality of pet insurance signed into law

Bill to regulate pet insurance signed into law

OLYMPIA—For the first time, Washington pet owners will be able to rely on a well-regulated insurance market to cover the health care of their furry friends.

SB 5319, signed into law Thursday April 6, 2023 by Gov. Jay Inslee, puts in place protections for insurance customers, requires disclosures about coverage, and establishes a training and licensing requirement for sellers.

“Pet insurance has been a Wild West of unregulated offerings, misleading advertisements, and arbitrarily denied claims, which have done a disservice to pet owners, to their pets, and to the responsible businesses trying to offer a good product but getting lost in the tumult,” said Sen. Derek Stanford (D-Bothell), Chair of the Senate Business, Financial Services, Gaming and Trade Committee and sponsor of the bill.
“This legislation sets a floor for quality and consistency between plans in the pet insurance market, similar to the way Obamacare did in the health insurance market.”

Sen. Derek Stanford, D-Bothell, represents the 1st Legislative District, which includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Brier, Kirkland, Mountlake Terrace, Alderwood Manor, Cathcart, Clearview, and Maltby.

Traditional Easter Service at Berean Bible Church of Shoreline is open to all

On Sunday, April 9, 2023 Berean Bible Church will offer Easter service for the 59th year. The service is open to anyone, especially from the Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, and surrounding communities. Pastor Nathan Killion will present the Easter sermon based on the book of Luke titled "Walking With Jesus."

"When we first meet two of Jesus' followers on the road to Emmaus, they're sad, hopeless, and unbelieving. By the end of the story, everything has changed! As we gather together to celebrate that Jesus is alive, I pray that you will be encouraged as we look at how our Savior graciously enters into our lives, walks with us, and invites us to be on a mission with Him. He is risen!"

The Easter service will begin at 11:00am. Children's Church is available.

"Every Sunday when our church gathers is a chance to celebrate the redeeming work of God, but Easter is always extra special," stated Associate Pastor Gary Hansen. "During our 11:00 a.m. service, we'll have great activities for your children and an encouraging message of hope and joy for all. We are excited to have you join us."

Nathan and his wife, Jessica, are former missionaries to Thailand. Now, they serve with The Navigators, a disciple-making ministry that shares the gospel of Jesus and helps people grow in their relationship with Him. They are members of Berean, where Jessica works part-time as a Ministry Assistant, and Nathan volunteers with the College and Career ministry."

Berean will also hold the Good Friday service with an added feature. Laura Barron of the international organization, Jews for Jesus, will provide a unique presentation on "The Exploration of the Passover, the Last Supper and your Communion Experience." Good Friday service is at 7:00 p.m.

On Saturday morning, the Men's Fellowship will feature Jeff Adams, a retired career firefighter of 26 years, who, with his wife, Connie, climbed mountains in Europe and the Swiss Alps when Jeff wasn't holding down firefighter duties. Jeff will share stories of his life journey as a firefighter, husband, and father, along with stories of their mountain climbing and his faith. The men gather at 8:00am and adjourn by 9:15am. City Light crews starting to trim branches around power lines

Story and photos by John Boril

A crew from Seattle City Light contractor Kemp West was out along NE Serpentine Place on Tuesday, April 4, 2023 trimming limbs above and around our power lines.

This past winter, falling limbs caused a 48-hour power outage in this neighborhood, during some of the coldest days of the year.

According to City Light’s website, the utility trims trees on a four and a half year pruning cycle.

In addition to outages, City Light says trees touching power lines can also start fires, burn or electrocute people touching the tree, and cause voltage loss in the system.

Marking June 17th - for the Secret Garden Tour

Thursday, April 6, 2023

Marking June 17th
By Beth Weir

June 17th has a lot to be proud of. It is the 168th day in the Gregorian Calendar, not to mention Apple Strudel Day and Eat Your Vegetables Day.

Given the significance of the date, celebrating the Secret Gardens Tour of Lake Forest Park, June 17th, seems like a logical thing to do before enjoying strudel and vegetables. Make it a trifecta day!

As is traditional, the 19th Secret Garden Tour will be the Saturday of Father’s Day Weekend. We cannot promise helpings of apple strudel but we can promise wonders that dedicated gardeners conjure up in their yards.

They are labors of love and the gardens are offered for your enjoyment. There will be six on display this year for viewing at your leisure, along with artists and musicians who enhance the experience.

Before or after your tour you can visit the plant and garden art vendors located at the Lake Forest Park Town Center. Tickets for the tour itself are available now on-line at lfpgardentour.com and the early bird catches, if not a worm, a discount. Pre-sale tickets will also be at three local businesses on May 1st.

Who knows … you may find a secret garden with vegetables growing in celebration of Eat Your Vegetables Day. A bonus indeed!

Shorewood Girls Golf - April 5, 2023 match results

L-R: Coach Val, Sadie Austad, Sofina Morgan, Josie VandenDyssel and Emily Zhang

Wednesday's weather was partly sunny and held for the golf match but wasn't enough to assist the Shorewood Stormrays in our match with rival Shorecrest Scots. Today the course challenged all of our players, and we fell to the Shorecrest Scots, 208-265.

"We have a young, new team this year. The girls continue to learn what clubs to hit, demonstrating on course etiquette, staying positive when the times get tough, and applying the rules when faced with out of bounds or water hazards. Coach Val said,
"Every player on our team contributes in every match. Girls are eager to help each other when it comes to rules.

Emily Zhang was second place overall. Sofina Morgan, Josie VandenDyssel and Sadie Austad persevered and finished 7th, 8th, 9th respectively.

The cherry trees at the UW are in full bloom right now

Wednesday, April 5, 2023

The cherry trees in the UW Quad are really quite spectacular. They rival the more famous trees in the "other Washington."

It's an immersive experience. And look at the size of the trunks. Those trees are 90 years old.

The Quad’s signature Yoshino cherry trees are nearly 90 years old and were originally set in a grove at the Washington Park Arboretum. In late 1964, the University transplanted the trees to their current spot, bringing thousands of visitors to campus each spring to witness their rosy bloom.

Easter services at Berean Bible Church begin with a special Good Friday program

Good Friday services at Berean Bible Church of Shoreline will offer a special opportunity to experience God’s ancient story of redemption through this Christ in the Passover event.

The church will host Laura Barron of Jews for Jesus, who will provide a unique presentation on “The exploration of the Passover, the Last Supper, and your Communion Experience.”

"We look forward to a great evening together as we reflect on the final Passover meal Jesus ate with his disciples and remember God's incredible love for each one of us,” stated Associate Pastor Gary Hansen. “We would love to have those from the community join us for this special service.”

The Good Friday service will be on April 7 at 7:00 p.m. All from the community are welcome, regardless of whether Christian, Jewish, or simply curious. Childcare will be provided for children 4 and under.

Laura Barron of Jews for Jesus will be coming from her home in Toronto, Canada, where she has lived with her family since they were deployed there from South Africa in 1996. She and her husband were the first permanent overseas missionaries of Jews for Jesus when they served in Johannesburg in 1989.

In addition to serving on the staff as a vocational worker, she is the leader of the Haredi Women’s ministry team.

This will be her first time presenting this program in our area.

“This is my first visit to the Shoreline and Seattle area, where I’ve been able to drive around this beautiful state. During this extended speaking tour, I’ve been able to hike in Yakima and drive over two breathtaking mountain passes,” stated Laura. “My sister lives in south King County,” she continued, “and this is the first time I’ve visited her new home. I’m awestruck by the pristine and peaceful views in Washington!”

“I’m excited about the opportunity to share this “Christ in the Passover” presentation with the Shoreline and area communities, she continued. It’s a privilege to connect with the people here and trace God’s plan of redemption throughout the Scriptures together. What a blessing to meet people here and enjoy their warm hospitality!”

Under new ownership, the North City Bistro and Wine Shop continues the tradition of fine music and fine wine - and expands fine dining

Story and photos by Mike Remarcke

North City Bistro and Wine Shop, a long-standing, renowned jazz nightclub in the North City neighborhood of Shoreline, is under new management.

The previous owners, after withstanding the pandemic by selling cases of wine at the location, opted to retire and move to the south of France.

The Bistro has an extensive inventory of fine wine.

The new owners, Taylor and Leah Park, are Shoreline residents (Leah, a Shorewood grad) with three children. They look at this operation as a family business.

The other day while I was visiting the club, two kids, Dylan and Giuliana, were folding napkins, while Liam sat in his stroller, wishing he could help.

Taylor has been a chef at various establishments in the Seattle area, most recently as Executive Chef at both T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field, but his passion is gourmet foods, and he is very excited to share his newest creations at the Bistro.

The couple is in the process of enhancing the menu with new, exceptionally fine options of appetizers, small plates, salads, and entrees. Taylor and Lia have also added wine tasting events to the Bistro’s calendar, bringing in some of the area’s best wines for sampling with food options that pair well with the featured wines.

One of the most popular jazz combos in the area, Pearl Django is booked regularly at the Bistro.

Most importantly, the couple plans to continue the tradition of great music.

Many outstanding regional jazz musicians are excited that the Bistro will continue to support their musical community. The owners said that they are booked well into the future, but are always looking for new jazz musicians to play at their venue.

Recently, this reporter and his wife joined friends for a lively sold-out performance by Pearl Django. We’d met this couple at a shared table while celebrating our wedding anniversary at a Pearl Django concert pre-pandemic. How nice that friends are made sharing a table and enjoying music together at the North City Bistro!

Music and dining are offered Wednesday- Saturday.
  • Happy Hour is Thursday - Saturday from 4-6pm and on Wednesday, all day.
  • The wine shop is open 12 - 8pm Wednesday .- Saturday.
  • Prepared meals are offered for delivery and are also available Wednesday - Saturday.

Shoreline is fortunate that the North City Bistro lives on, providing exceptional music, gourmet food and fine wine!

The Bistro is located at 1520 NE 177th St, Shoreline WA 98155 in the North City Business District.

Update: The photo previously identified as Leah Park is actually a wine vendor. Also, we are verifying the link for delivered meals.
