By Clark Norton

It was the battle for the Spartan Cup Friday night, January 27, 2023 as the Shorewood boys hosted cross-town rivals Shorecrest. Shorecrest won the trophy last season and the Stormrays were hungry to have it back.

Shorewood built an early lead with the help of their upper weights. Seniors Hunter Tibodeau and Milan Johnson delivered another pair of first round pins in the 220 and 285 pound bouts to stake their team to an 18-6 advantage.

After Shorecrest received a forfeit at 113 pounds Shorewood responded with a pin by junior Owen Mulder at 120. The Highlanders got another forfeit at 126 pounds, and again Shorewood responded with a pin. This time it was sophomore Masa Taura who built a 7 to 0 lead before pinning his opponent and giving Shorewood a 30-18 lead.

The visiting Highlanders then went on a run of their own. With pins at 138 and 145 pounds the Scots were able to tie up the match at 30 to 30 with just three bouts remaining. At 152 pounds Shorecrest’s Peter Grimm survived an early attack from Shorewood’s Isaac Van Horn, bridging from his own back for a reversal and near fall to grab a 5-0 lead after the first period. In the second and third rounds Grimm was able to control the action and shut down Van Horn on his way to an 8-0 victory that gave Shorecrest their first lead of the night.

With just two matches left Shorewood had zero margin for error. At 160 pounds Junior Mak Kanzler answered the call and methodically dominated his opponent for a 7 to 0 win. It was Kanzler’s sixth win in a row and ninth out of his last ten matches as he appears to be peaking just at the right time.

With Shorecrest clinging to a 34 to 33 lead, the final bout was between Stormray Nathaniel Hernandez and Scot senior captain Max Rutledge. Despite a valiant effort, fighting off of his back multiple times, Hernandez was unable to withstand the constant pressure from Rutledge. Rutledge scored a decisive victory to give the visitors a final margin of victory of 39 to 33 and one more year of ownership over the Spartan Cup.

Shorewood Girls Wrestling 1-26-2023: first ever WESCO Girls Dual Championship

The Shorewood girls wrestling team competed in the first ever WESCO Girls Dual Championship Thursday night hosted by Edmonds-Woodway High School.

All the girls teams from WESCO 3A and 4A, North and South, were there competing for respective league titles.

In their first dual meet of the night the Stormrays faced a combined team from Shorecrest and Cedarcrest.

Bouts began at 145 pounds with Shorewood wrestler Izzy Crave taking on Shorecrest’s Safiya King. Crave was aggressive for the whistle and pinned her opponent in the first period.

By the time the 110 pound match came around Shorewood had stretched its team lead to 18-6 thanks to a couple of forfeits. Shorewood sent out freshman Finley Houck against undefeated Shorecrest senior Ana Reed. Houck countered a big throw attempt by Reed to score the first takedown. Using her quickness and tough riding skills Houck was able to build a 7-0 lead before pinning Reed in the 3rd period.

Shorecrest/Cedarcrest was able to keep it respectable, but they could never catch the Stormrays as Shorewood led the entire match for a 41-24 victory.

In the second dual meet of the night Shorewood had a rematch with Edmonds-Woodway, this time with a league title on the line.

After a forfeit to open things, Shorewood sophomore Libby Norton wrestled the first match of the dual against Ny Ny Pendleton. A quick attack from Pendleton caught Norton off guard, but she managed to avoid giving up the takedown. With a jolt the Stormray fired off her own attack and overpowered Pendleton for a takedown and pin. Norton was followed in the next match by Houck, who also pinned her opponent to give Shorewood an 18-0 lead in the team score.

The home team Warriors rallied with a pair of pins sandwiched around a pair of forfeits to take their first lead of the night at 24-18. Shorewood’s Abby Tveit received a forfeit at 125 pounds to tie the score up with just three matches to go.

At 140 pounds Shorewood’s Aly Fellores got the first takedown, but couldn’t hold on to the lead and got pinned in the second period. Izzy Crave kept her team alive in the 145 pound match by pinning her opponent in the first period to tie the team score 30 to 30 with only one weight left.

Stormray Cora Morgan made her varsity debut and was unable to stop Edway’s Jael Whitacre as the Warriors claimed a close 36-30 win and the inaugural WESCO South Girls league title.

Scene on the Sound: NOAA vessel Oscar Dyson

Oscar Dyson is the first in a class of ultra-quiet fisheries survey vessels built to collect data on fish populations, conduct marine mammal and seabird surveys, and study marine ecosystems.

Homeported in Kodiak, Alaska, she operates primarily in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. On Tuesday, January 24, 2023, she spent the afternoon in the Salish Sea.

The 208-ft. ship plays a major role in collecting data used in the management of Alaska pollock, one of the world’s largest commercial fisheries.

A stern trawler capable of conducting trawling operations to depths of nearly 6,000 feet, Oscar Dyson is equipped with sound-dampening technology, which helps NOAA scientists monitor fish populations without altering their behavior.

For acoustic surveys, scientists use the ship’s multi-frequency echo sounders to detect fish as the vessel passes over them, measuring the signal reflected by the fish to estimate their size and numbers.

Constructed to meet the National Marine Fisheries Service's specific data collection requirements, Oscar Dyson is equipped with six onboard laboratories: a wet lab, dry lab, electronics/computer lab, bio lab, acoustics lab and hydrographics lab. The ship carries a multibeam echo sounder that acquires data on the content of the water column, as well as mapping and characterizing the sea floor.

Launched in 2003 and commissioned in 2005, the ship is named after Alaskan fisherman Oscar Dyson, a pioneer in Alaska’s fishing industry for half a century before his death in 1995. A well-known fishing activist and an industry advisor to government, Dyson was dedicated to improving the industry for the many Alaskans who make their living at sea. The ship is homeported in Kodiak, Alaska.

Alleged French cybercriminal to appear in Seattle on indictment for conspiracy, computer intrusion, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft

A member of the so-called “ShinyHunters Group,” the defendant was arrested in Morocco and extradited to the U.S.

Seattle – A 21-year-old French citizen from Epinal, France, will appear tomorrow January 27, 2023, in U.S. District Court in Seattle on a nine-count indictment alleging conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, four counts of wire fraud and three counts of aggravated identity theft, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.

Sebastien Raoult aka Sezyo Kaizen, was arrested last year in Morocco and was extradited to the U.S. this week. Raoult and two co-conspirators were indicted by a grand jury sitting in the Western District of Washington on June 23, 2021. Raoult’s initial appearance will be at 2:00 PM in front of Magistrate Judge Michelle L. Peterson.

“Too many bad actors believe they can illegally access proprietary information and personal financial information by hiding behind a keyboard,” said U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.
“FBI Seattle Cyber Task Force and our experienced cyber unit is working diligently to identify, arrest, and prosecute those who seek to victimize people, businesses, and industries in the Western District of Washington and around the world.”

According to the indictment, Raoult was a participant in a hacking group that dubbed itself the “ShinyHunters.” The conspirators allegedly hacked into protected computers of corporate entities for the theft of proprietary and corporate information. The group advertised sensitive stolen data for sale and sometimes threatened to leak or sell stolen sensitive files if the victim did not pay a ransom. Since early 2020, ShinyHunters Group has marketed and promoted data stolen from more than 60 companies in Washington State and elsewhere around the world.

According to the indictment, the conspirators created websites that appeared to be login pages belonging to legitimate businesses. The conspirators allegedly sent phishing emails to company employees that were designed to look like they came from legitimate businesses and contained links to those login pages. When victims provided their account sign-on credentials on those login pages, the conspirators obtained the victims’ credentials. Using the stolen credentials, the conspirators allegedly accessed protected computers with companies’ data.

The ShinyHunters maintained accounts on various dark web sites where they advertised stolen data for sale, including customer databases with personal and financial information. The conspirators also used social media accounts to direct potential buyers to the dark web marketplaces to purchase stolen data. Sometimes the conspirators alerted the media to their hacking or posted images on a victim website claiming credit for hacking the company.

Some of the victims of the ShinyHunters hacking were located in the Western District of Washington but others were located around the world. The victims range from tech companies, to an international stock trading company, to an apparel company, and a nutrition and fitness company. Millions of customer records were included in the stolen data.

In addition to the conspiracy counts, the wire fraud counts correspond to particular malicious emails to entities in the State of Washington and other transmissions involving the State of Washington. The three identity theft counts are for the use of other people’s log-in credentials to access victim company data.

In addition to Raoult, the indictment charges 23-year-old Gabriel Kimiaie-Asadi Bildstein aka “Kuroi” and “Gnostic Players,” of Tarbes, France, and 22-year-old Abdel-Hakim El Ahmadi aka “Zac” and “Jordan Keso” of Lyon, France.

The conspiracy to commit computer fraud and abuse charge is punishable by a maximum of ten years in prison. The conspiracy to commit wire fraud count is punishable by a maximum of 27 years in prison. Wire fraud is punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison. Aggravated identity theft is punishable by a mandatory minimum two-year prison term to follow any other prison sentence imposed in the case.

The charges contained in the indictment are only allegations. A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The case is being investigated by the FBI Seattle Cyber Task Force. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Miriam Hinman. DOJ’s Office of International Affairs is providing substantial assistance. The Department of Justice also appreciates the significant cooperation and assistance provided by Moroccan and French authorities.

Shoreline Community College student earns prominent state-wide recognition

Thursday, January 26, 2023

Former Shoreline Community College (Shoreline) student Zubeir Abdi was one of the 31 community and technical college students honored by the Washington State Association of Trustees (ACT) Monday night at the annual Transforming Lives Awards ceremony, a highly prestigious state system-wide recognition.

The annual ceremony recognizes current and former students of community and technical colleges whose lives were transformed by attending their college. Shoreline's Board of Trustees chose Abdi as its sole nominee.

Shoreline trustees Rebecca Chan and Rebecca Ringer noted the articulation in Abdi’s written statement, which served as part of the winners’ application.

“Zubeir was able to express the enormous challenge he faced as an immigrant, learning a new language and cultural institutions,” said Chan. “His statement eloquently described his impressive ability to set goals and do the work to achieve them.”

A key aspect of Abdi’s statement, Ringer said, was how he maintained a positive attitude when faced with failure while finding the grit to try again. Likewise, Abdi was able to find and utilize mentors to achieve success on campus, as evidenced by his role as Math Club President.

Among the 31 students honored, six were selected by the ACT as keynote speakers. The six keynote speakers will receive $500 from ACT, and the winners will receive $250.

Shorewood boys wrestling 1-24-2023

By Clark Norton

It was a hard fought battle between longtime foes on Tuesday night as the Shorewood Stormrays visited the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors.

The match began at 160 pounds with Shorewood’s Mak Kanzler. Kanzler brought the aggression and built an 11-2 lead before getting the pin and giving his team the opening lead. The Warriors answer in the 170 pound match with a pin of their own in the third period to tie the score.

At 182 pounds senior captain Alberto Solano wasted no time as he launched his opponent straight from his feet to his back for a lightning quick pin in just 26 seconds. The 195 pound match featured a pair of seniors in Shorewoods Matt Burns and Edway’s Reed Burmaster. Neither wrestler had any answers as the two battled to a scoreless draw after the first period. In the second round Burmaster was able to reverse Burns and get the pin to again tie the team score, 12-12.

As they have all season, Shorewood’s big boys came up large. Hunter Tibodeau and Milan Johnson each pinned their opponent in less than a minute to put the Stormrays back in front. The two of them have now combined for forty-three wins and thirty pins on the season.

Edmonds-Woodway was able to rally and took their first team lead after getting a forfeit and two pins in the next three weights. It was sophomore Masa Taura who pulled the teams back to even with a huge pin in the 126 pound bout. The home team scored a pair of 2nd round pins in the 132 and 138 pound matches, leaving Shorewood facing a 12 point deficit with just two weights to go.

At 145 pounds junior Quissett Sachs came out blazing. He took down his Warrior opponent, Sam Schimpf, and held him millimeters from a pin for most of the first period for a 5-0 lead. The 2nd period was all Edmonds as Schimpf dominated to take a 7-5 lead into the final round. Schimpf was able to finally subdue Sachs with only 13 seconds left in the bout to give Edmonds-Woodway an insurmountable 48-30 team lead.

Although the final team outcome had already been decided, the match of the night was the 152 pound bout.

Shorewood senior captain Isaac Van Horn faced off against Edmonds-Woodway senior captain Liam Fitting. Both wrestlers made it to the state tournament last season and are looking for a medal this year.

Fitting took advantage of a Van Horn mistake to get the first takedown. Van Horn quickly escaped and scored a takedown of his own before the first period ended for a 3-2 lead after one. In the second period Van Horn started on bottom and was able to get another escape, but Fitting got another takedown to even the score at 4-4 going into the final period. The Warrior captain started on bottom and retook the lead early in the 3rd with a reversal.

Van Horn was able to get his third escape of the match with about one minute left to trail 6-5. Neither wrestler was able to score by the time they went out of bounds with just 11 seconds left in the match. On the restart Van Horn gave one last valiant effort and finally broke through Fitting defense to get a takedown and hold on for dear life for the three seconds.

While Edmonds-Woodway got the win, and held on to their crown as WESCO South Champions, Shorewood held their heads high and can look forward to seeing their rivals again in the postseason.

Senator Patty Murray opens the Senate for the first time as President Pro Tempore

Tuesday, January 24, 2023

Washington State Senator Patty Murray officially opened Senate sessions for the first time in her role as President Pro Tempore.

She will preside over the Senate in the absence of the Vice President.

In addition to presiding over the Senate, the president pro tempore fulfills a number of other responsibilities. In consultation with Senate leaders, for example, the president pro tempore appoints the director of the Congressional Budget Office (jointly with the Speaker of the House), as well as Senate legislative and legal counsel.

The president pro tempore also makes appointments to various national commissions and advisory boards and receives reports from certain government agencies.

In the absence of the vice president, the president pro tempore may administer all oaths required by the Constitution, may sign legislation, may jointly preside with the Speaker of the House when the two houses sit together in joint sessions or joint meetings, and may fulfill all other obligations of the presiding officer.

Unlike the vice president, however, the president pro tempore cannot vote to break a tie in the Senate.

Salomon bill would allow psilocybin use among adults over age 21 under supervision

Sen. Jesse Salomon D-32
OLYMPIA—Sen. Jesse Salomon (D-Shoreline) has introduced SB 5263 which would legalize and regulate the supervised use of psilocybin and make it available for wellness purposes.

It would allow people aged 21 and over to undergo a psychedelic experience at a registered facility with appropriate supervision.

A previous version of the bill introduced during the 2022 legislative session failed to advance past committee. Like the previous bill, the 2023 version regulates supported adult use which has been shown in FDA-approved studies to provide users a safe and effective method to alleviate symptoms of depression, addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health disorders.

Psilocybin has been shown to be effective at easing fear and anxiety in people with terminal illness and has also proven to increase emotional empathy, creative thinking, mindfulness, and insightfulness in patients.

This time around, the bill has already gained ample support across the political spectrum ranging from left to center to right. Almost half of the Senate has already signed on as co-sponsors, including two Republicans, the Senate majority leader, and the chair of the Labor and Commerce Committee, which will be hearing this bill.

“Combat veterans with PTSD and people recovering from addiction or mental health issues like long-term depression have been very vocal about how psilocybin has dramatically improved their lives when all kinds of more common therapy didn’t work for them,” said Salomon.
“We are trying to integrate an ancient product into our relatively new system of health and law. With so many people in mental health crises, we can’t afford to deny them a safe and well-regulated path to wellness.”

SB 5263 is modeled after Oregon’s Measure 109 and Colorado’s Proposition 122. After close observation of Oregon’s law, valuable lessons were learned as to what will work best for this bill.

In a state where many residents live with mental illness and a large number have seen their mental health decline due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Salomon views psychedelic usage — monitored by trained professionals — as a key to healing for some people.

“We need to make sure there is a safe and responsible process to legally participate in psilocybin use in our state,” Salomon added.

Veterans have become leading advocates in the push to allow legal access to psilocybin, sharing personal stories about how their own experiences with psychedelics have helped them cope with trauma and helped treat their anxiety and depression.

The bill is expected to get a hearing in the Legislature in the next weeks.

Sen. Jesse Salomon, D-Shoreline, represents the 32nd Legislative District, which includes Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Seattle, Shoreline, Woodway, and unincorporated Snohomish County.
