To Everything There is a Season

Winter
To everything there is a season
Photos by Doug Cerretti

The four seasons of the Pin Oak (Quercus palustris)
located at the Edmonds Veteran Plaza, 250 5th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020

To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

Spring
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

Summer
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

Fall
To everything (turn, turn, turn)
There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late
--
Song popularized by the Byrds (1965); written by Pete Seeger (1959) who adapted the lyrics from the Bible (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8)

25 Years of Aegis Living: Shoreline Team Celebrates with “Field of Dreams” Party

Aegis staff members at the Field of Dreams party
at the Shoreline facility

For 25 years, Aegis Living has cared for area seniors, offering senior assisted living and memory care across the Puget Sound and beyond.

Fun at the staff party on a fortunately warm day
The local company, founded by Dwayne J. Clark, was created to redefine the senior living industry and set a new standard, fostering an employee-centric business model and ensuring residents live every day to the fullest.

Clark was a long-time industry executive before founding Aegis and felt even more inspired to drive lasting change when his own mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Aegis Living opened its first community in 1997, and its first office in Redmond, WA, with a small but mighty team of just two employees.

Aegis Living Shoreline opened in 2005, just 8 years later.

Playing baseball at the Field of Dreams staff party

The Shoreline team celebrated the company milestone and 25th anniversary with a baseball-themed party inspired by the movie “Field of Dreams.” The staff turned the community’s parking lot into a baseball field and served hot dogs and Cracker Jacks for a fun-filled afternoon with the team.

“From starting as a care manager to serving as a director of operations and now as an acting general manager at Aegis Living Shoreline, I could not feel more privileged to work for a company that gives me purpose every single day,” said Ashley Besmehn. “I am honored to work here, and I look forward to the next big milestone."

Aegis Living Shoreline staff celebrated with home runs, laughter, joy, full stomachs, and a true sense of community.

"When I first came to Aegis 14 years ago, I had just lost both my parents. Coming to Aegis was a blessing in that I gained a much bigger family,” said Char Linvog, lead concierge at Aegis Living Shoreline. “Over the past 14 years, I have felt a sense of purpose and belonging."

Celebrating 25 years
More than 200 team members have been with Aegis Living for more than 10 years, including seven employees at the Shoreline community:

Norberta Bada (16 years), Charlene Linvog (14 years), Janaira Stokes (12 years), Clarissa-Ann Fitting (11 years), Mila Garcia Silang (10 years), Facundo Aranda (10 years), and Lourdes Bazan (10 years).

Aegis has been voted a great workplace more than a dozen times – from the Top 50 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor to Great Place to Work® certification.

Equally important to its dedication to team and residents is Aegis Living Shoreline’s commitment to the community.

From delivering meals to local seniors, offering continuing education classes to community and healthcare workers, holding support groups for families, sponsoring the farmer’s market, concerts in the park, and other community events, and so much more, Aegis Living always strives to make a lasting impact and keep the Shoreline community at the heart or all it does.

Shoreline Aegis is located at 14900 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155.

Homeless service workers may qualify for up to $4,000 in relief

Homelessness is a challenge for communities all across the country and Washington state. The root causes are as complex as the solutions, but workforce shortages are a big factor in many places.

As with so many other sectors, it’s been hard for homeless service providers to recruit and retain workers. These are the individuals who work directly with people experiencing homelessness to connect them to services and who staff shelters and housing facilities.

To help ensure those working as homeless service workers can afford to continue that work, the Washington State Department of Commerce is administering a federal Homeless Service Workers Stipend Program.

The program is funded by $51 million in federal grants. Applications opened this week and eligibility information is available in English and Spanish. Applications will be reviewed on an ongoing basis.

Olympic Ballet Theatre Autumn Auction and Costume Ball October 29, 2022

Olympic Ballet Theatre Gala October 29

Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) is jumpstarting its 2022-2023 performance season with an evening of philanthropy and pre-Halloween fun.

The 2022 Autumn Auction and Costume Ball is taking place at the Nile Shrine Center in Mountlake Terrace on Saturday, October 29, 2022.

This exciting fundraiser features a delightful dinner, live and silent auctions, performances of excerpts from the upcoming season, and opportunities to support OBT. The event is hosted by former FOX 13 anchor and reporter Matt Lorch.

As a nonprofit, OBT relies on the generous support of donors and sponsors to sustain its operations, and all funds raised will support the season’s productions.

OBT’s 2022-2023 performance season starts with the all-time holiday favorite The Nutcracker in December, spotlights new works in February’s Debuts, brings back the timeless fairytale of The Sleeping Beauty in May, and culminates in an eclectic mix of classical and contemporary ballets in June’s Summer Performance.

“Autumn Auction and Costume Ball is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we are looking forward to finally gathering with our supporters in person after several years of canceled or virtual events,” said Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev, OBT Artistic Directors.
“This event is just a few days before Halloween, so it’s a fun opportunity for guests to dress up in costumes (or just dress up), see previews of the season’s performances, and have a wonderful time supporting the arts.”

Event tickets are $100 per person or $750 per table of eight. Guests can register for the event at
https://www.olympicballet.org/performance-season/autumn-auction-and-costume-ball/

Olympic Ballet Theatre is an emerging nonprofit ballet company presenting four productions of classical and contemporary ballets each season.

Founded 41 years ago and now under the leadership of artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev, OBT has become a mainstay of the Snohomish County arts scene, regularly touring theaters in Everett and Edmonds.

OBT provides high-quality original and classical ballet productions while maintaining family-friendly ticketing prices and intimate venues that audiences love. The OBT is located at 700 Main St, Edmonds WA 98020. 425-774-7570.

Bolt Creek Fire update

Much of the area shown in this photo is considered part of the
16 percent of the fire that burned at a high severity.
Smoke from the Bolt Creek fire is still coming west into Puget Sound. It tends to pool in low-lying areas around the head of Lake Washington but drifts through central Shoreline.

All evacuation orders were lifted at 8am this morning.

Bolt Creek fire update
8pm Saturday, October 1, 2022

We saw a bit more fire activity (and smoke output) with the warmer and drier conditions today on the #BoltCreekFire

This photo was taken this afternoon, looking out towards Eagle Rock from the 6510 Road, showing the fire burning primarily towards the Wild Sky Wilderness to the north.

While a bit more active than previous days, this fire behavior still aligns well with the management strategy that members of the Incident Management Team have been talking about in their updates this week.

Temperatures will remain high this week—with no sign of a wetting rain in the near future—but humidities will likely remain above 30 percent and will have a moderating effect on fire behavior starting tomorrow.

The Sky Valley can still expect an increase in smoke through the next week as warmer temperatures contribute to more burning.

Tow truck removing car from tracks in Edmonds

A vehicle was struck by a freight train after a driver made a wrong turn and ended up northbound on the BNSF railroad tracks at Dayton Street Saturday night, October 1, 2022.

The driver, a 77-year-old Edmonds woman, had exited the vehicle before being struck and was uninjured, Edmonds police spokesperson Josh McClure said.

The incident occurred around 7:40pm after the driver “inadvertently turned onto the tracks,” McClure said. After the car became high centered on the tracks, the driver left the vehicle.

There was no evidence of driver impairment, he added.

Traffic was blocked at Dayton Street while the car was removed.

Prayer Lab - Celtic Spirituality workshop October 5 at Saint Dunstan's

Since 2010 Saint Dunstan’s has had the blessing of learning from Brother John Ryan.

He joined a Franciscan order as a young man and left the order to become a chaplain.

Saint Dunstan's will be doing a Prayer Lab lesson on October 5, 2022 which Brother Ryan will be leading, about Thin Places, or spots that we feel we have been touched by the Presence of the Sacred.

He has explained what it’s about as follows:

People experience a Thin Place in many different ways as expressed in many different traditions and cultures.
The Irish Celtic Tradition was established long before Christianity was brought to the Isle.
There are still sacred mounds, hills, wells, walls, trees and places at which people have touched the sacred.
You and I can and have experienced such places and events in which we have been touched by and touched the Presence of the Sacred.
It is said the place between our world and that beyond is experienced through this place of the thin veil. We will look at examples of these experiences both ancient and present and have the opportunity to express our own experiences.
For a time we will have the opportunity to be for each other “anam cara” or soul friends, for we all live in the shadow of each other.
--Br. John Ryan, OSF

We invite you to join us to learn from him. You can RSVP on Eventbrite. Prayer Lab-Celtic Spirituality- Experiencing the Thin Place Tickets, Wed, Oct 5, 2022 at 6:45 PM | Eventbrite

Safety improvements on Meridian Avenue between N 155th and N 175th - express your opinion

The City of Shoreline was awarded grant funding to provide safety improvements on Meridian Avenue N between N 155th Street and N 175th Street. The project will enhance safety at pedestrian crossings, add bicycle lanes, and modify the lane configuration along the Meridian Avenue N corridor.

Safety improvements include:
  • Adding a pedestrian refuge island at the pedestrian activated rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) at N 170th Street
  • Installing a new RRFB at N 163rd Street
  • Restriping to add a bike lane in each direction on Meridian Avenue N and include left turn pockets
Provide Your Input!

As we prepare to make safety improvements on Meridian Avenue N, we would like your input on intersection lane configurations and pedestrian and bicycle enhancements.

N 175th is an example of safety improvements

Background Information

The City’s 2018 Traffic Report indicated that 39 percent of the 46 injury and fatal collisions in Shoreline between 2010 and 2016 involved a pedestrian, and that, as a percentage of overall injury collisions the number of non-motorized (pedestrian and bicycle) collisions is rising.

In mid-2018, staff sought grant funding for improvements on a number of the identified segments, focusing on reducing the numbers of pedestrian and bicycle injury collisions.

Financial Impact

The City was awarded a $1,139,000 City Safety Program grant for project design, right-of-way acquisition and construction of pedestrian safety and improvements on Meridian Avenue N between N 155th Street and N 175th Street.

Funding is Federally-sourced and provides for 98 percent of eligible costs. Remainder of the project funding will be provided by the Roads Capital Fund.

New mural adds color to North City Business District

New mural on the recently closed North City Cleaners

Rachel Wold Art is excited to announce a new, vibrant mural in the bustling North City business district of Shoreline.

Wold, a Seattle-based abstract artist, grew up in Shoreline and has many happy childhood memories of the stretch of 15th Ave NE that runs through North City.

The cleaners' space is for lease

The mural sprawls across the side of the building at 17721 15th Ave NE, which housed the North City Dry Cleaners for over forty years until owner Eric van der Giessen (the artist’s uncle) retired this summer.

Wold’s mother also worked at the cleaners for many years and often brought her children along during the summer or on days with no school.

They spent their days exploring the neighborhood, picking blackberries or trading cleaning chores for treats from the local shops.

The mural features an abstract Pacific Northwest scene of evergreens in bright, harmonious color with pops on contrast, and is a love letter from the artist to a neighborhood of her childhood.

Rachel Wold poses with her newest mural

Wold participates in a number of independent and fundraising art events in the Seattle area, and donates a portion of proceeds to Urban Artworks.

Cottage Housing is returning to Shoreline with new regulations

Example of cottage housing on a cul-de-sac

By Pam Cross

Cottage housing is a type of "missing middle" housing that generally allows for small 1 or 2 story houses arranged around a common interior courtyard.

“Missing middle” housing represents the price gap between apartments or townhouses and single family detached homes. Cottage houses are small and may allow for naturally moderate-income housing that is well suited to seniors and small families. They blend easily in single family neighborhoods, appearing similar to single family houses from the street.

The City of Shoreline had cottage housing regulations and permitted some cottage housing developments from 2000-2004. Some developments were more successful than others at achieving the community’s vision for cottage housing. The old regulations were repealed in 2006. To date there are 56 cottage homes across seven developments in Shoreline.

As part of public outreach, there was a virtual meeting of the Cottage Housing Focus Group on September 2, 2022. It was attended by representatives from the Echo Lake, Ridgecrest, Richmond Beach and Hillwood neighborhoods. There were lively discussions about parking, tree retention and landscaping, as well as suggestions for amenities such as the ability to charge electric cars.

Now there is an opportunity for everyone to share their thoughts about cottage housing.

Shoreline residents are invited to a virtual open house on Zoom about cottage housing on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 from 6:30 - 8:30pm.

The open house is a time for you to learn about cottage housing and a time for the city to listen to your thoughts about cottage housing. There will be a presentation about cottage housing (what is it, why is the city doing this), a project update, general questions and answers, and then small group discussions where you can share your opinions about cottage housing in Shoreline with a member of city staff.

Registration is required.

Zoom Registration: Registration in advance is required and you can register at the following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEvd-iqrj4qGNFwg4ff3ZFzV_5NaZ0cSmXc

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

Volunteers cleaning up trash in Shoreline

When residents from the tent city United We Stand discovered a huge trash site in the trees by the I-5 exit ramp at N 175th, they decided to do something about it.

They partnered with We Heart Seattle - an action-based, boots-on-the-ground movement that organizes trash cleanups in public spaces and offers resources to those in need.

BEFORE - this is what the site looked like when they started
With We Heart Seattle's truck, U Haul, volunteers and equipment, campers from Camp United We Stand, along with volunteers from Seattle and Shoreline, cleared over 1500 lbs of garbage on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

AFTER - this is what it looked like after they cleared 1500 pounds of trash

Beverly Hawkins, Board Member of Camp United We Stand, we elated.

"Volunteers from Seattle and Shoreline, from Camp United We Stand, and We Heart Seattle came together for a great job of beautifying a piece of Shoreline."

Camp United We Stand is hosted in turn by several Shoreline churches. They are presently located at Shoreline Free Methodist Church at 510 NE 175th St.

Famed mountaineer who died in an avalanche in Nepal was a Shorewood graduate

Jim Morrison and Hilaree Nelson in Nepal
The Seattle Times has reported on the death of Hilaree Nelson who was caught in an avalanche while skiing down a peak in Nepal.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — The body of an American mountaineer whose daring achievements brought her acclaim among some of the world’s most elite climbers was found Wednesday on a peak in Nepal, two days after she went missing, a government official said.

Hilaree Nelson, 49, and her romantic and climbing partner, Jim Morrison, were attempting to ski down Manaslu, the world’s eighth-highest peak, on Monday.

Jim Morrison posted on Instagram
On September 26th at 10:42 am we reached the true summit of Manaslu in tough conditions. We quickly transitioned from climbing to skiing in cold and wind with a plan to ski around the corner and regroup with our Sherpa team. I skied first and after a few turns Hilaree followed and started a small avalanche. She was swept off her feet and carried down a narrow snow slope down the south side (opposite from climbing route) of the mountain over 5000’

He searched for two days before finding her body.

According to the Shorewood Boosters Club, Hilaree was a 1991 graduate of Shorewood High School in Shoreline. They posted "We are saddened by the loss of Hilaree Nelson. An amazing human, adventurer seeker and pioneer of  her sport.  A 1991 Shorewood graduate. Our prayers surround her boys, family, Jim and the community who loved her."

The Times quotes from her biography
Her many successes include earning a National Geographic Explorers grant in 2014 to lead an expedition to a “little known” peak in the northern region of Myanmar, Hkakabo Razi, that was captured in an award-winning documentary, “Down to Nothing.”

Nelson was named National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year in 2018, according to the biography. She was also named captain of The North Face Athlete Team the same year, a title only U.S. climber Conrad Anker has held.
