Rain clouds and blue sky at the end of the day Friday

The black clouds were pretty dramatic at the end of the day Friday but they didn't end up dropping any rain on us.

The blue sky and white clouds are the real story. It has been a very long time since we have seen anything but a solid sand-colored backdrop of particulates from wildfire smoke.

The fires are still burning and there's a possibility of smoke from Oregon but right now it's lovely to see the sky.

RO/RO VESSEL UNDER U.S.-FLAG

The M/V Liberty Passion was welcomed to the United States at the ceremony by The Honorable Elaine L. Chao, the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Lieutenant General Steven R. Lyons, USA, Deputy Commander, U.S. Transportation Command, and Maritime Administration Executive Director, Joel Szabat. Major General Kurt Ryan, USA, Commander, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command along with many other local and regional representatives and key customers also attended.

The vessel was designed to transport commercial vehicles, rolling stock and project cargo, as well as military wheeled and containerized equipment such as M-ATVs, HUMVEEs, MRAPs, armored personnel carriers, tanks, helicopters and unit equipment.

When used to carry commercial cargoes, the vessel is capable of carrying up to approximately 6,500 cars on 12 decks and has a total deck area of approximately 580,000 square feet.

The vessel is enrolled in the 60-vessel U.S. Maritime Security Program, a vital U.S. Government program that helps ensure that privately owned U.S.-flag vessels with high military utility are available at all times to support U.S. armed forces overseas.

Since 2009, MSP carriers have moved over 90 percent of the cargo needed to support U.S. military operations and rebuilding programs in Iraq and Afghanistan.

DOH partners bring COVID-19 vaccine clinics to state college campuses

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH)’s Care-A-Van program, in partnership with the Power of Providers (POP) Initiative will be hosting a series of COVID-19 vaccine and booster clinics at several college and university campuses across Washington state.

The dates are as follows:
  • September 23, 9am-1pm: Central Washington University, Ellensburg
  • September 23, 10am-2pm: Eastern Washington University, Cheney
  • October 3, 10am-2pm: University of Washington, Seattle Campus
  • October 4, 10am-2pm: University of Washington, Tacoma Campus
  • October 5, 10am-2pm: University of Washington, Bothell Campus
  • October 6, 2pm-6pm: Washington State University, Vancouver
  • October 21, 11am-3pm: Central Washington University, Ellensburg
“College students tend to find themselves in close proximity with others, in places like dorms and classrooms,” said POP member Professor Ajay Mendoza, ANRP.
“That’s why COVID-19 vaccines and boosters are such a vital part of showing up as our healthiest and best selves on campus this year.
"Being vaccinated will lead to less severe illness from the virus, which will ensure students aren’t distracted from their academic work or social lives while at school and will help them stay healthier in the event that they still become infected.”

While the focus of these clinics will be providing the recently released Omicron-targeted bivalent boosters, primary series vaccines from both Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna will also be available.

In addition to students, faculty, and staff members, the clinics are also open to members of the public who are eligible for primary series or booster vaccinations. Clinic appointments can be made in advance by visiting the PrepMod website, and will also be available on a first-come, first-serve basis at each location.

“The COVID-19 pandemic taught us that we have to always be ready to respond, and a big piece of that is engaging our community,” said Secretary of Health, Dr. Umair A. Shah.
“Care-A-Van and Power of Providers (POP) do just that. By going into communities with Care-A-Van, we’re able to focus on equitable distribution for those facing barriers to vaccines.
"Through POP, we established partnerships with trusted health care professionals to ensure health and safety, while engaging, educating and empowering the people of Washington."

King County and State acquire behavioral health treatment center in North Seattle, preserving sixty-four treatment beds

King County and State purchase behavioral health center in north Seattle

King County Executive Dow Constantine announced today the County is in the final stage of purchasing Cascade Hall, a 64-bed residential treatment center in north Seattle. The purchase will preserve approximately 25 percent of King County’s mental health residential treatment beds at a time when economic pressures are causing providers to close behavioral health facilities.

The purchase will allow the facility to continue providing mental health residential care to dozens of clients.

The facility is currently owned and operated by Sound, a behavioral health provider.

In early 2022, Sound informed King County of its intent to sell Cascade Hall. Together, King County and Sound developed a plan to secure the building long-term and ensure continuity of care for clients.

In 2023, the County will begin a new partnership with Community House to continue operating the building and ensure ongoing access to behavioral health treatment. King County worked closely with both Sound and Community House to prevent the loss of important mental health treatment capacity and continue serving the community.

“Everyone should have access to the care they need, where and when they need it— especially in a moment of crisis. The behavioral health system has long been underfunded, and we cannot afford to lose treatment facilities like this one,” said Executive Constantine.

“Today’s success should also be a warning – too many community behavioral health facilities lack funding for basic maintenance and upkeep. We need dedicated funding from our state and federal partners to keep these treatment facilities open and expanding. I appreciate the State’s partnership in saving this facility, especially the leadership from Senator Frockt and Representatives Callan and Macri.”

200 volunteers help paint the Salmon Mural in LFP

Thursday, September 15, 2022

4th and 5th graders from Brookside painting blue water on the prepared surface
Community Paint Day a Huge Success!
By Kim Josund
Photos by LFPSF

Over 200 volunteers pitched in to help paint the 188-foot “Save Our Salmon” mural on the NE 178th St bridge over McAleer Creek in Lake Forest Park on Saturday, September 10, 2022.

Kim Josund from LFP Stewardship, mural artist Austin Picinich, and Alex Nason of UrbanArtWorks lean against the prepared wall at the start of the day
From cleaning brushes, pouring paint, to putting color on the walls – every contribution mattered as we transformed the boring gray concrete barriers to this beautiful mural featuring native Kokanee salmon.

Mural designer 17 year old artist Austin Picinich painting Save Our Salmon
The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation (LFPSF) spearheaded this project to bring young artist Austin Picinich to design the mural, which is his second Save Our Salmon mural.

Alan Kerley General Manager of LFP Water District, Kim Josund President of the Stewardship Foundation, and LFP Mayor Jeff Johnson. A volunteer sells Salmon Mural tee shirts

In addition to the LFP Stewardship Foundation, financial support came from the City of Lake Forest Park, ShoreLake Arts, the LFP Water District, Rotary Club of LFP, and Trout Unlimited.

Shorecrest High School students were part of the crew
Volunteer help from Shorecrest High School students, Ms. Benson’s 4th-5th graders from nearby Brookside Elementary School, and a hundred community members, brought this mural to life.

Adding the details
Thanks also to UrbanArtWorks for organizing the volunteers, Westlake Ace Hardware at the LFP Town Center for donating and discounting paint for the mural, the LFP Water District for providing cold drinking water, and Top Pot Donuts for perking up the volunteers with donuts on Saturday morning.

Volunteers clearly enjoyed their work
This stunning piece of public art highlights the salmon-bearing McAleer Creek below the road and raises awareness about the stewardship of our waterways needed to bring the salmon back.

There were tasks for everyone who wanted to help.
Kokanee, also called “the Little Red Fish,” are a type of salmon that do not swim to sea, but instead live in Lake Washington before returning to the streams to breed.

The wildfire smoke stayed in the trees
Reportedly, our local streams were once so thick with spawning Kokanee that the streams appeared red with fish. The Stewardship Foundation and others are working to bring back these iconic fish.

Fine detail work took extra time. Staci Adman lettered the end wall with contributing organizations

For more information on the Salmon Mural project see: https://www.austinsart.net/salmonmural/

Done!
We are still raising funds to help us cover the costs of the mural project (additional funding supports salmon research) at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-paint-a-save-our-salmon-mural
