Night construction on N 155th has been extended

Thursday, September 15, 2022

N/NE 155th from Midvale to 15th NE is under construction to repair and overlay pavement

The N 155th Pavement Preservation Project will repair and overlay pavement from Midvale Avenue N to Interstate 5 (I-5) and repair pavement from I-5 to 15th Avenue NE.

Phase 1 construction began the week of August 15, 2022 and is expected to end before late-October.

Night construction has been extended

We anticipate approximately four nights of work in the period beginning Tuesday, September 13 through Monday, September 19, 2022.

Doing this work at night allows us the opportunity to take advantage of the dry weather this week, reducing the risk of project delays and minimizing impacts on Parkwood Elementary’s transportation and operations.

Work will occur between the hours of 7:00pm to 5:00am. We apologize for the disruption and want to thank you for your patience during this time.

Shoreline's strong, welcoming, free programs for youth have openings for paid, part-time adult staff

The City of Shoreline Youth and Teen Development programs are free to Middle and High School students in Shoreline.

The programs run throughout the school year, including the Hang Time Programs at both Middle schools, our Shoreline Teen Center in the Richmond Highlands neighborhood east of Aurora, and a variety of classes and events.

These programs are welcoming, safe spaces with free healthy food and amazing resources like our onsite Mental Health Therapist and our Youth Outreach employment program – both of which are funded by a King County Best Starts for kids grant.

As another example, we are also hosting the “After the Game Party” event after the Shorewood/Shorecrest football game at Spartan Recreation Center to provide a fun safe atmosphere for High School students to choose after that game.

The City of Shoreline’s Youth and Teen Development Programs have been a beacon for Teens in the area for more than 25 years and we are one of the few organizations still offering completely free Teen Programs with no barriers to participation in the Shoreline area.

Our Shoreline Teen Center is open Monday- Friday afterschool and Friday and Saturday late night and requires no registration or prior sign-up. Any middle school or high school student is welcome to drop-in for food, games, crafts, sports, classes or just to hang out in a safe space with friends.

We really have some amazing programming options and a really great lead staffing team. Unfortunately, we (like a lot of folks) are really struggling to get committed people to staff our programming. We’re looking for people who want to make a difference in our youth community, and have fun while doing it for 10-20 hours a week.

If you have questions, contact recreation supervisor Amanda Zollner 206-801-2642 or azollner@shorelinewa.gov

King County welcomes Simon P. Foster as new Housing, Homelessness and Community Development Division Director

Simon Foster, Division Director for King County
Housing, Homelessness, and Community Development
The King County Department of Community and Human Services (DCHS) proudly announces and warmly welcomes Simon P. Foster as the new Division Director for Housing, Homelessness, and Community Development.

Foster brings more than a decade of experience leading strategic initiatives, operationalizing programs and policies, and connecting with communities.

Foster led teams among a diverse range of industries, including behavioral health, transportation, homelessness, and federal and state funding programs.

Foster most recently led operations for the Salvation Army Northwest Division during the pandemic and oversaw outreach, social service programs, and domestic violence outreach services.

“I am thrilled to step into this role and serve the people of King County on some of the most complex and pressing issues in our region,” said Foster. “Throughout my career, I have prioritized building connections—connections with community and connections between industries and organizations to get results.

"The housing affordability crisis coupled with the homelessness crisis impacts every sector in our region, and we are collectively responsible for sustainable, long-term solutions.

"King County can’t solve these issues alone, and I look forward to working with the team, partnering with city and state leaders, communities, philanthropic organizations, providers and the King County Regional Homelessness Authority to further our progress.”

In this role, Foster will oversee the Housing, Homelessness, and Community Development Division within DCHS that directly funds programs and provides services around housing stability.

This division’s work includes the Health Through Housing Initiative, a regional approach to address chronic homelessness at a countywide scale, oversees implementation of Anti-Displacement Strategies for the Skyway-West Hill and North Highline neighborhoods, the County’s Housing Repair Program, staffs the Affordable Housing Committee, and manages the transit-oriented affordable housing bond program.

The division is primarily focused on growing affordable housing stock, strengthening housing stability, and reducing displacement of Black, Indigenous, and communities of color across the county.

DCHS oversees a wide range of programs ranging from youth and young adults to seniors and veterans

The department funds services for children, people with developmental disabilities, housing and community development, homelessness services, behavioral health, veterans' services, help for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, and education and employment programs for youth and adults.

Shoreline Severe Weather Shelter at St. Dunstan's this Winter

Come in out of the cold
Now in its fourth year, the City of Shoreline and the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA) are partnering to operate an emergency winter severe weather shelter.

Rev. David Marshall and the generous congregation at St. Dunstan’s Church have once again offered space to house this important program at their parish, located at 722 N 145th Street, Shoreline.

To make the shelter successful, volunteers are needed to help staff it during activation. Compassionate and vaccinated volunteers must be over 18 years old and be able to commit to being on-call for a certain number of nights each month between November 1st and March 30th.

The threshold for activation will be a prediction of four-plus hours of temperatures at or below 33 degrees overnight or snow accumulation (or expected accumulation) of 2 or more inches. When activated, the shelter will be open from 8:30pm to 7:30am.

Volunteers will be provided with training and then will be responsible for welcoming guests and supervising the shelter overnight (partial shifts can be arranged). Volunteers will be paired with another person during shelter activation.

If you would like to volunteer, email staff@nuhsa.org or call 206-550-5626.

For more information about the emergency severe weather shelter, contact Community Services Manager Bethany Wolbrecht-Dunn at bwolbrec@shorelinewa.gov or 206-801-2251.

Puget Sound Kidney Centers prepares for leadership change

Harold S. Kelly is retiring as President / CEO
Puget Sound Kidney Centers
For over a quarter century, Mr. Harold S. Kelly has expertly led the Puget Sound Kidney Centers (PSKC), and this past summer he announced to the PSKC Board and staff his plan to retire.

Under Mr. Kelly’s leadership as President / CEO, PSKC grew from a small, community-based, nonprofit provider of dialysis to a high-quality regional health care organization operating 11 centers in six counties with five more kidney center projects pending throughout western Washington.

PSKC has been steadfast in its mission to enhance the quality of life of those with kidney disease through life-sustaining dialysis care, education, and community support, and over the years, PSKC has been recognized as an outstanding employer as well.

A fierce advocate for patient-centered care, Kelly is recognized for his dedication to improving the health and wellness of those diagnosed with kidney disease. He is also well known for his strategic priority of building and operating high quality kidney centers in locations convenient for the patients.

Additionally, he led the creation and introduction of PSKC’s Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patient education program, recognized as one of the most comprehensive education programs on CKD in the nation. He also established the PSKC Foundation, an organization that assists in fund-raising for the PSKC patients in need.

Despite the many recent challenges facing the healthcare industry, Kelly’s steady leadership has positioned PSKC to remain a strong and successful business for many years to come.

A long-serving PSKC board member, Don Senter, observes,

“Our faith in a young Mr. Kelly was well founded as we watched him grow in experience, determination, and wisdom, guiding PSKC to the strong, well-respected organization it is today. Throughout his career as the leader of PSKC, his top priority has always been the welfare of the patients."

In 2021, due in large part to Kelly’s ongoing commitment to patients and staff, PSKC celebrated its 40th anniversary, and through his diligent efforts, PSKC will continue to ensure that quality nonprofit dialysis care is available for all patients in need.

Thomas DeBord, incoming President / CEO
Puget Sound Kidney Centers
To succeed Kelly in 2023, the board has hired Thomas DeBord as the incoming President and CEO.

DeBord brings a wealth of experience in healthcare that will serve PSKC well into the future. DeBord has served as Chief Operating Officer of Overlake Medical Center since 2015.

In this capacity he has overseen the day-to-day operations of the hospital, including numerous patient care services, and regulatory compliance.

Also, DeBord has had primary responsibility for the planning and implementation of Project FutureCare, Overlake's major campus renewal project that was announced in early 2016 which includes a new patient bed tower, cancer center, cardiovascular operating rooms, and a new behavioral health unit.

In accepting the appointment, DeBord states, “I am grateful to succeed Mr. Kelly. PSKC is highly respected for its quality of care, and I am honored to be selected to lead the organization in the future. I look forward to joining the PSKC team.”

Over the next several months Kelly and DeBord will work closely together to ensure a smooth leadership transition for PSKC.

PSKC Corporate offices are in Everett. One of their dialysis centers is now located on 44th in Mountlake Terrace, WA.

New Bible Study Fellowship Group for Men starts in Shoreline on September 12

Shoreline area residents wishing to dig deeper into the Bible will have a new and local opportunity with the partnership of Bible Study Fellowship and Berean Bible Church of Shoreline beginning September 12, 2022.

Berean Men’s Ministry will host the BSF program, an in-depth, interdenominational Bible study. BSF includes weekly personal study, sharing within small groups, lectures, and notes. All this helps men to be in God’s Word consistently.

“The Elder Board at Berean Bible Church is excited to host the BSF program for men,” stated Dan Royal, board member, and Berean Men’s Ministry Team. “One of our pillars is, Grounded in God’s Word. BSF is an extension of that pillar. We invite all men to join us in studying God’s word to stay or become grounded in him!”

The men’s BSF is open to any man from the area who wants to participate. There is no cost to join the Bible study program, which begins in September and runs weekly through May, except during the holidays. Participants do not need to be a member of any church or denomination or even attend church. Men seeking a better understanding of God’s Word and His place in men’s lives are welcome.

Bible Study Fellowship is an international organization that offers Bible study in 120 countries, with thousands of groups meeting for chapter-by-chapter Bible study. Each week, men gather to study the Bible, learn from one another, and be challenged and encouraged to live for something larger than themselves.

Gerhard Ade, a long-time participant in Men’s BSF, stated, “Having joined BSF in 2002, I’ve deepened my understanding of the Bible through study and sharing the Word with other men. BSF is non-denominational and aims to grow personal relationships with God, which equips each man to serve his churches to the best of his ability.”

“When I have felt spiritually dry, I have found cracking open the Bible and asking questions of the text awakens me spiritually,” Daniel Kutz, BSF Teaching Leader, stated. “And I have found BSF to be that place that helps me stay spiritually alive through consistent bible study.”

Starting this fall, the studies explore the roots of our faith while continuing to deepen the understanding of Jesus as Messiah. “People of the Promise: Kingdom Divided” will increase hope in Christ by exploring 15 Old Testament books, from the death of Solomon through exile.

Berean already hosts two women and children’s groups of BSF. The women and children meet on Tuesday at the church, while the new men’s group will meet on Mondays. Berean Bible Church is located at 2345 N 185th St (at 1st Ave NE) in Shoreline.

For information about the Men’s BSF meeting, contact Bob Junell at Berean Church office, 206 363 1466, or contact Eric: bsf755eric@gmail.com

Registration for the new Men’s BSF is at: https://join.bsfinternational.org/

Report positive COVID-19 test results and get new test kits at state's Say Yes! COVID Home Test website

Test kits continue to be available through the state
OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has announced updated guidance around COVID-19 at-home testing, including changes to how self-testing results should be reported and additional information about COVID-19 treatment.

As part of the guidance update, Washingtonians are now being asked to report all positive at-home test results through the Say Yes! COVID Test Digital Assistant, even if those testing kits were not obtained through the Say Yes! COVID Test (SYCT) program.

Previously, those wishing to report positive test results were instructed to contact the Washington State DOH COVID-19 Hotline. While the hotline will remain in service, its primary focus is being shifted to Care Connect Services that provide additional support for those in need who have recently tested positive.

While the White House recently announced a pause to the federal program that previously provided free at-home COVID-19 tests, the Say Yes! COVID Test program continues to offer up to 10 free tests to Washington households each month on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Say Yes! COVID Test program recently celebrated surpassing 10 million tests distributed throughout the state since the program’s inception in January 2022. New allocations of tests are available at the beginning of each month and can be ordered on the Say Yes! COVID Home Test website.

Lacy Fehrenbach, Chief of Prevention, Safety, and Health said “We encourage every family to have at-home tests on hand with the start of school and approaching fall respiratory virus season. By reporting results through the SYCT digital assistant, Washingtonians can help public health understand the burden and trajectory of infections in Washington state.”

Washington residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are in need of assistance with isolation, such as food, personal care kits, or other needs, can still contact the WA DOH COVID-19 Hotline at 1-800-525-0127 to report positive test result and ask to speak with Care Connect, or reach out to a Care Connect hub.

Those not in need of additional assistance should proceed with reporting positive cases via the SYCT portal.
