2nd Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr. 1943
Courtesy of MR Johnson
By Doug Cerretti

With the passage of time we tend to forget much of the past as we lose contact with that past. Such is the case with 1st Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr.

When I joined the Starr Sutherland, Jr. Post 227 of The American Legion in Shoreline, WA a few years ago, all I knew about Starr Sutherland is that Post 227 was named after him and he was killed in action in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge.

Since establishment of Post 227 in 1948, we had lost much of the knowledge of Starr Sutherland.

We were prompt to remedy our deficiency in our knowledge of Starr Sutherland, Jr. after an email.

Starr Dern in Shoreline
The author of the email related that his Dad, William Dehn, and Starr Sutherland, Jr. were students at the University of Washington, roommates, fraternity brothers (Sigma Tau chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta, aka Fijis) and best friends.

William thought so much of Starr that he named his youngest son after him. The sender of the email - Starr Dehn!

This email prompted us to search for the information we had lost of Starr Sutherland, Jr. This search culminated in a visit to Post 227 by Starr Dehn on August 20, 2022.

We learned that William and Starr were graduates of Seattle’s Roosevelt and Lincoln High Schools, respectively, class of 1940. At the UW, Starr was a member of the Husky football and tennis teams while William participated in rowing.

Graffiti at Husky Stadium
When Husky Stadium was renovated in 2013, walls were uncovered revealing graffiti. You can see Starr had left his mark.

With the outbreak of World War II, many college students of the time enlisted into the military; William was commissioned after Navy ROTC in 1944 and Starr after Army OCS (officer candidate school) in 1943.

2nd Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr. entered France via Omaha Beach July 1944 in the 35th Infantry Division, a part of Patton’s 3rd Army. As they raced across France they took part in the fighting to relieve Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
Wartime letter from Starr to his friend William. Transcription below.
Starr wrote a letter to William 18 December 1944. It is heartening, like so many letters written to friends and family, with plans never to be fulfilled. Just two UW Frat Boys talking about the friendship their families had and what they were going to do when they returned home.

On December 26, 1944, 2nd Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr. was awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action and was battlefield promoted to 1st Lt.

Starr Dehn in Luxembourg at Starr Sutherland, Jr.'s grave
Sadly, two weeks after William received Starr’s letter, 1st Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr. was killed in action in Luxembourg on January 4, 1945.

His parents, Starr and Ruth Sutherland, received a letter of condolence from General George Patton writing in part,

"You should be very proud to be the parents of this man. I know that you are and I know that this pride will sustain you in your grief over his unfortunate death."

In 1984 the Dehn family visited the Luxembourg American Cemetery and Starr Dehn had his picture taken at Starr Sutherland’s grave.

Since our first contact with Starr Dehn, we have discovered many other facts about the Sutherland family.

Starr, Sr. was a history teacher and tennis coach at Lincoln High School and Starr’s mother Ruth was a charter member of Post 227 Auxiliary.

From the 1940 census we discover a younger brother George.

Dixie Rhode, a member of the Auxiliary, related that her family was good friends with the Sutherlands and as an eight-year-old girl she had a crush on Starr.
L-R Dixie Rhode, Doug Cerretti, Mary Robertson Johnson at Post 227 August 2022. Photos by RB White. Mary Sutherland and Mary Robertson Johnson in 1996 photo courtesy MR Johnson.

Most unexpectedly Dixie brought her good friend Mary Robertson Johnson to Starr Dehn’s visit to Post 227. Remarkably, Mary is a Lincoln High School classmate of Starr Sutherland, class of 1940 and 100-years young. Mary was also very close to the Sutherland family after Starr’s death.

Starr Dehn was ecstatic to meet people who actually knew his namesake. With information supplied by Mary we discovered that Starr’s brother George has a son named …, you guessed it, Starr Sutherland, named after his Uncle. We have talked with him and look forward to his visit to Post 227.

Ensign William Dehn.

I would like to end this story with Starr’s best friend, William Dehn.

William left the Navy after WWII as a Lieutenant, Jr. Grade after serving on an Escort Carrier in the Pacific.

As a young man, he made a list of life goals, his #1 goal, have a son... he had four.

William is one of the veterans who came home and lived his life and raised a family.

Starr Sutherland, Jr. who made the ultimate sacrifice was not able to do this but he will be in our hearts and will always be remembered.

Please visit Post 227’s our webpage (shorelinepost227.com) for more information on 1st Lt Starr Sutherland, Jr.

Starr Sutherland Jr.'s letter to William Dehn

      18 December 1944

Dear William,
Just have a few moments - long enough to write a short note to let you know where I am and how things are. Also time enough to ask you to let me know how you and Jane are.

Well Roomie, I've been on the Third Army front for almost two months and am ready for the armistice. I been in too many close ones to suit me and am now counting the days till this all is over and we're home again.

It looks as tho you and I will lose our bet with the professor. He'll gloat over that - wait and see.

I hope you have had opportunities to be with Jane. Marriage is a difficult problem during wartime, but probably not much of one for you too. You can't imagine how much my family enjoyed Jane and your visit with us that day. I don't have to tell you how happy I was to see you both.

When I get married, we shall have to have many nights together. We'll have the wives prepare dinner - & the drinks for us while we lounge before the fireplace in our bare feet. Afterward, we'll wax you & Jane in bridge - or maybe you & I can beat the women. Life will be wonderful. All that has to happen now is for the powers involved to agree to cease this fight. You and I are doing our part to speed the victory.

Well William, there's no other man any higher on my totem pole than you. You've known that for a long time. My very best wishes and luck to you and your Jane. Anytime there is anything I can do, Roomie, just say the word.
I'm mighty glad to be a Fiji.

Fraternally,
Starr

Scene on the Sound: New Boeing 747 flies through the wildfire smoke

Story and photo by Jan Hansen

This morning a beautiful, new Boeing 747 flew over Shoreline. The pattern looked like a test flight, so I assume it is one of the four that Atlas Air receives this year. The economists are using more flight metaphors these days. Soft landings and plenty of runway are good, but new takeoffs are even better.

From the Atlas Air website: June 2, 2022 –

Atlas Air, Inc., a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAWW), today announced it has taken delivery of a Boeing 747-8 freighter, which will operate on behalf of its customer Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group, as part of a previously announced long-term agreement.

The aircraft will increase capacity on routes between China and the Americas. This aircraft is the first of four new 747-8 freighters that Atlas expects to receive from Boeing this year.

St. Dunstan's dedicates new organ with recital September 18 featuring Aaron David Miller

Friday, September 9, 2022

Aaron David Miller, organist
Join us on Sunday September 18, 2022 at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline, WA at 3pm as we celebrate the installation of our new organ with the long awaited - and twice postponed - Dedicatory Recital, presented by Aaron David Miller, a world-renowned organ recitalist and improviser.

Dr. Miller will play a thrilling program with repertoire spanning the centuries, will lead the audience in a rousing hymn, and will open and close his program with improvisations - including an improvised Organ Suite!

A reception will follow the concert where you can meet the artist and the organ's builders.

This concert is free and open to the community. It is underwritten and co-sponsored by the Seattle Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Two decades ago, Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church began raising money to replace their church organ.

In 2019, they launched the “Imagine the Ways” capital campaign to finish raising funds for the organ and make significant other capital improvements to the church facilities.

The sanctuary remodel by Deacon Construction was completed sooner than planned, and by late 2020 the installation of the Ortloff Organ Opus 2 was complete. However, the dedication concert was delayed due to continuing pandemic restrictions.

We are delighted that the dedication concert is happening on September 18, 2022, at 3:00pm.

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church
722 North 145th Street Shoreline, WA 98133

For more information visit the Saint Dunstan’s Episcopal Church website’s concert page at https://www.sdchp.org/music-2/organ/ To let us know you’re coming, please RSVP on Event Brite.

Red Flag Warning in effect until Midnight Saturday night.

Air Quality Alert in effect until 6pm Sunday.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service in Seattle. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either imminent or occurring now. Any fires that develop will likely spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Winds are northeast 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Relative humidity is low; some places may get as low as 20% or less. Temperatures are in the lower 70's, we could reach temperatures into the 80's on Saturday.

Air Quality:

The brown plumes streaking westward from the Cascade mountain range is wildfire smoke.
Satellite image from the National Weather Service on Friday September 9, 2022.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Northwest Clean Air Agency have issued a joint air quality alert in effect from 6am Saturday to 6pm Sunday. The air quality is expected to become unhealthy for sensitive groups. All sensitive groups should limit spending any time outdoors. People with health conditions may have worsened symptoms. Healthy people may start to have symptoms.

Wildfire smoke can cause burning eyes, sore throat, headache, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and worsening of heart and lung conditions.

Forecast: Hazy sunny skies through the weekend, with highs near 80°F both Saturday and Sunday with lows in the upper 50's. On-shore winds pick up Sunday afternoon and evening, which should begin to cool temperatures down and start pushing the wildfire smoke back into the mountains.

Monday a weak weather system is expected to bring a slight chance of showers with some clouds in the morning, clearing to mostly sunny skies in the afternoon and evening. Tuesday through next weekend should be pleasant, with sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 70's all week. Lows in the mid 50's all week. Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Activity Center
18560 1st Ave NE #1, Shoreline WA 98155

Sponsored and led by staff from Laurel Cove Community

Learn about the importance of hydration 365 days a year. Hydration is crucial for our bodies to stay healthy during all seasons. One might think that it’s only important during the Summer but this is not true. Our bodies need hydration especially as we get older.

Hydration can come in a liquid or food form. Learn the different food groups that provide hydration, learn just how much you need to drink and eat, and how often.

There will be a raffle for a hydration basket along with having your hydration level read.

Avoid getting dehydrated

1. Don’t wait till you’re thirsty to drink.
2. Flavor your water.
3. Eat water-rich fruits and vegetables.
4. Stay inside when it gets too hot.
5. Dress for the weather.
6. Be aware of the signs of dehydration

Pre-event registration is mandatory. To register please call us at 206-365-1536 and leave your name and phone number before Friday, September 9th.

Rob Oxford: All three of our varsity football teams were victorious in their first week of play

By Rob Oxford

We’ve wrapped up the first week of the 2022/23 high school football season and all three of our varsity teams came away victorious.

Shorecrest

Coach Brandon Christensen is back for his 13th season at Shorecrest, preparing another young team for the bright lights of Friday Night.

In an effort to improve on last year’s disappointing overall record of 3 – 7, Coach C. has enlisted the talents of first year coaches Marcus Tidwell and Des Fox, both former Shorecrest standouts, to hopefully replicate the one-loss season they enjoyed together in 2021.

The Scots got the season started at home against Meadowdale, defeating their Wesco opponent 14 – 8. A low-scoring defensive battle, the highlight of the night was the exceptional play of Ben Chesnut. The junior had two sacks, one resulting in a safety, scored the game winning touchdown and intercepted the pass that ultimately ended the night for the Mavs.

Shorecrest will have their hands full Friday as they travel to Monroe to take on a Bearcat team coming off a 56 – 14 win over Roosevelt and ranked 12th (3A) in the state.

Shorewood

The Shorewood Stormrays were in action last Friday afternoon meeting the Lakeside Lions under a blazing hot, end-of-summer sun at Nathan Hale and had I known the bleachers at the field weren’t covered, I’d have worn my bonnet.

In all fairness and with full disclosure, I chose to attend the Shorewood game because my son is in his 2nd year as an assistant to Head Coach Rob Petschl.

This should be an exciting and somewhat emotional year for the Stormrays Coach as his son Reid Petschl is a Captain playing in his Junior year.

However, if last Friday’s game is any indication, production is not something that needs to overly concern Coach Rob. Especially on the Defensive side of the ball. Reid and fellow Senior Hunter Tibodeau recorded two sacks and nine tackles each on their way to a 41 – 30 win over Lakeside. On the Offensive side of the ball, opponents will want to keep an eye or probably all eyes on the Senior running attack of Alberto Solano, Eduardo Eulogio, Isaac Van Horn and Rory Swanson.

On Friday, the Stormrays are home against Lynnwood at 7pm.

Kings

Kings was also at home last Friday with a non-district matchup defeating Lincoln 48 – 23. This Friday, Coach Jim Shapiro and the Knight’s host East Jefferson (Port Townsend) at Woolsey Stadium and in an effort to cover more of the Friday Night action and give all of our athletes the recognition they deserve, I’ll be digging something red and white out of my closet and seeing you Friday at Woolsey Stadium.
