This Fall, Shoreline Community College (Shoreline) is excited to introduce a new degree to its program list: an Associate of Applied Arts (AAAS) in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics (BIDA).

The Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) approved the new AAAS degree this summer.

The BIDA degree will provide graduates with the skills to solve today's business problems and prepare for tomorrow's opportunities. With this degree, graduates establish strong foundations in data principles, reporting, visualizations, analytics, project development and data-driven decision-making.

PEMCO Mutual Insurance’s Information Systems Manager expressed they would utilize someone with this degree in an intro analytics role.

“This would be a great foundation for someone to come in and be able to start in an analytics role and help with analysis and data-driven decisions,” said the manager. “People with a well-rounded understanding of statistics and excellent communication skills are critical for impactful data analysis.”

The program can be completed in two years, creating a pathway to high-wage, high demand jobs in Seattle-region business sectors such as finance, marketing, recruiting, sales, aviation, logistics and business intelligence reporting.

Dr. Phillip King, vice president for Student Learning, Equity, and Success at Shoreline, recognizes this program is timely and important to the increasingly diverse Seattle region and its local community.

“Shoreline has forecasted those needs by identifying key new faculty and staff to assist in developing and teaching the program,” said King.

“The BIDA degree program is built to serve several worldwide and regional issues, including the proliferation of Big Data (large and complex data sets), the need for innovation and creativity when displaying data, and the large skills gap specific to this geographical area.”

Shoreline has introduced several other programs in the last few years to improve inclusive excellence in teaching and learning, support student success and include students and the community in the learning process. These programs encompass STEM additions which consist of the Automotive Service Technician AAAS, the Electric Vehicle Technician Certificate (Tesla), Mechatronics AAAS, and the Essentials of Biomanufacturing Certificate.

Dr. Lucas Rucks, executive dean of Business, Communication Studies and Social Sciences programs, acknowledges that this degree adds to a robust list of programs Shoreline College offers but allows access to a new career sector.

“Few colleges are offering courses in data analytics, and the business intelligence market is in desperate need of the skills within this degree,” shared Rucks.
“Our program will provide lessons and skills required to improve business decision-making, converting raw data into meaningful information to inform business planning, market analysis, and drive competitive practices. These are skills local organizations and top companies worldwide are looking for right now.”

Shoreline aims to serve the entire community, assisting students with their diverse educational, workforce and cultural needs.

“The college continues to explore ways to meet the challenges of a changing economic climate and the needs of students in our region,” added Rucks. “We will continue to offer online and hybrid courses while also providing support in financial aid, academic planning towards career and transfer goals, and ramping up basic skills towards college work, both online and in person.”

Enrollment for the BIDA program is available now for the fall semester. For more information, contact businessprograms@shoreline.edu

Superintendent Reykdal unveils plan to more equitably distribute timber revenue for school construction

Chris Reykdal, Supt. of
Public Instruction
OLYMPIA—July 19, 2022—As revenues from harvesting timber on school trust lands continue to decline, it’s time to stop depending on these funds for the K–12 School Construction Assistance Program, State Superintendent Reykdal said in a recent media briefing.

Reykdal laid out his plan for re-allocating funding from the K–12 Common School Trust, which currently provides a small percentage of the funding for school construction across Washington.

In his plan, a portion of revenues from timber harvested in the rural communities - which currently are primarily provided to school districts in urban communities - would be retained within the communities that generate the dollars. In addition, Reykdal proposes the state reallocate a portion of the funds to support forest health and preservation.

His proposal calls on the state Legislature to completely fund the School Construction Assistance Program from revenue sources other than trust land revenue and instead, dedicate those dollars to projects in rural Washington.

“Rural communities in Washington have long generated this revenue through timber harvests and other trust land activities, but are not often the beneficiaries of it,” Reykdal said. “We should be investing this revenue within the communities where it’s generated and using a portion of the dollars to support forest health and preservation.”

Reykdal will propose the change during the upcoming legislative session as part of his 2023–25 Capital Budget request.

Insurance Commissioner extends three emergency orders related to COVID treatment

Insurance Commissioner
Mike Kreidler
OLYMPIA, Wash. – Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler has extended three emergency orders. His order requiring health insurers to waive copays and deductibles for any consumer requiring testing for the coronavirus (COVID-19) and his order protecting consumers from receiving surprise bills for lab fees related to medically necessary diagnostic testing for COVID-19 are both extended until September 25, 2022.

Kreidler also extended his order requiring health insurers to cover coronavirus vaccine counseling until October 4.

Kreidler's order waiving cost-sharing applies to all state-regulated health insurance plans and short-term, limited-duration medical plans.

The order on surprise billing applies to both in-state and out-of-state laboratories when a provider orders diagnostic testing for COVID-19.

Also, insurers must continue:
  • Allowing a one-time early refill for prescription drugs.
  • Suspending any prior authorization requirement for treatment or testing of COVID-19.
In addition, if an insurer does not have enough medical providers in its network to provide testing or treatment for COVID-19, it must allow enrollees to be treated by another provider within a reasonable distance at no additional cost.

“Consumers are rightly concerned about prevention, testing and possible treatment,” Kreidler said. “My emergency orders provide guidance to health insurers and should help reassure the public that we will take all necessary steps to protect them.”

Kreidler is using powers granted to him following the statewide emergency that Gov. Jay Inslee declared to protect Washington residents against the spread of the coronavirus.

When the governor issues an emergency proclamation, the commissioner can issue an emergency order related to health care coverage to ensure access to care. The order can be extended by the commissioner for 30 days at a time as long as the governor’s emergency proclamation remains in effect.

Rally to protect mature legacy forests state-wide September 6 in Olympia

The Center for Responsible Forestry will hold a rally to protect mature legacy forests state-wide.

On September 6, 2022 at 8:00am, there will be a rally in front of the Department of Natural Resources building (DNR) in Olympia. Groups from all over Washington are working to stop legacy forests from being clearcut on state lands.

The groups seek a chance to tell the DNR that they want forests on public lands to be managed for climate change and biodiversity, not just for timber profits. The address is 1111 Washington St SE, Olympia, WA 98501.

The State Supreme Court just ruled that the DNR can manage public lands for multiple uses to serve all the people of WA and are not limited to only timber harvesting. The Center for Responsible Forestry will be sharing a “Call to Action” that lays out seven changes that they want DNR to make.

They invite the public to join them. You may REGISTER or just show up!

EDMONDS, WA - Skipping just feels natural in the summer, and so does leaping through the beautiful trails of the Pacific Northwest and spinning on the beach in Edmonds! And if your child loves skipping, leaping, and spinning, then they will truly adore Irish dancing. At the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dancing’s free Open House on August 30, children will hop, leap, and spin around the dancing floor while celebrating the end of the summer.

In our Summer Open House, we will explore the basics of this living tradition (yes, it is the dance form featured in the latest Netflix film, Riverdance). Your budding dancer can use up that last bit of summer energy at the Open House before entering into the new school year. From the youngest little jumper at 3 years old to the skilled artist, any dancer can hop on into the dance studio and experience a bit of Irish culture at this Open House.

Irish dancing has been a mainstay of Irish culture since the earliest day of the celts. The traditional music and dance scene were deeply entwined, as throughout the generations, locals would gather to play music and dance. The dance form evolved from its most traditional roots when the Gaelic League was founded in 1893 that promoted Irish language and culture which included dance.

At the Carroll-Henderson School, dancers experience the harmony between the traditional music and dance. Dancers learn the traditional, artistic, and competitive aspects of Irish dancing.

Come experience this living tradition for free at our Irish Dance Open House. Registration is required online at https://www.chirishdance.com/open-class.

SR 520 across Lake Washington will be closed this weekend

You didn't really want to travel south this weekend, did you?

The ongoing Revive I-5 work on southbound Interstate 5, means travelers should think twice about their weekend plans.
  • Beginning at 7:30pm Friday, Aug. 26, crews will reduce southbound I-5 to one lane south of the stadiums until 5am Monday, Aug. 29. All traffic will go through the collector-distributor lanes. The eastbound and westbound I-90 ramps to southbound I-5 will remain open.
The big one is the total closure of the 520 bridge over Lake Washington.
  • At 11pm Friday, SR 520 will close around the clock until early Monday morning, Aug. 29.

Part of the SR 520 Montlake Project, the closure is needed to place bridge girders near SR 520 in the Montlake area and shift lanes to create a larger work in between the eastbound and westbound lanes.

There is also ongoing construction in the Montlake neighborhood, where crews are building a new lid over SR 520 and adding new eastbound lanes between the lid and the floating bridge.
