Wild Creatures among us: Bobcat in North City / LFP

Bobcat in North City

By Diane Hettrick

Shoreline resident Mary Freeborn was treated to the sight of what appears to be a juvenile bobcat strolling through her yard, and was able to get these photos.

She lives above the woods off 25th NE and NE 177th on the Shoreline side. Lake Forest Park is on the other side of 25th NE.

According to Aaron Wirsing, Assistant Professor, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington,

Bobcats (Lynx rufus) are closely related to lynx but are able to use a wide variety of habitats, including city suburbs. They typically weigh about 25 pounds and have paws that are about twice the size of those of a domestic cat.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says "Found throughout all of Washington, bobcats are probably more common than most people realize. Bobcats appear to be using suburban settings more often, although due to their reclusive ways, they are not often seen."

Mary says that "I feel so lucky to be at the right place, at the right time."

So far I've been told about sightings in central Shoreline in the Echo Lake Neighborhood, Innis Arden, Lake Forest Park where Phillippa Kassover got a lot of photos (see previous article) and now this one in North City.

Fish and Wildlife has an information page on bobcats
Because of their elusive nature and caution around humans, bobcats are seldom seen. In areas occupied by humans, these cats typically limit their activity to night hours. (In dim light, bobcats see up to six times better than humans.) In undisturbed areas, they can be active at dawn or dusk if prey is active at that time. However, bobcats may be active during any time of day.

Bobcats travel in predictable patterns along logging roads, railways, and trails made by other animals to move between resting areas, food sources, or hunting areas. Evidence of a bobcat’s presence may include tracks in snow or mud, droppings, feeding areas, and claw marks on tree trunks.

Oh, and hope that you are not within earshot of mating bobcats. According to Fish and Wildlife,
Bobcats rarely vocalize, although they often yowl and hiss during the mating season, especially when competing males have intentions toward the same receptive female. Such wails have been likened to a child crying, a woman’s scream, and the screeching of someone in terrible pain.

King County Elections (KCE) honored by the Election Center, the National Association of Election Officials

Presentation of award to King county elections

RENTON, WA – King County Elections (KCE) was honored by the Election Center, the National Association of Election Officials, in the organization’s annual Professional Practice Paper Awards for 2022.

The Election Center’s Professional Practices Program is a celebration of best practices from small, medium, and large jurisdictions around the country and the U.S. Territories. This year, KCE joins officials from California, Ohio, Missouri, and Colorado in being recognized.

The Guardian Award

KCE’s close partnership with both major political parties to double the number of trained observers in the election facility earned the Guardian Award for exemplifying the Election Center’s Principles and Standards of Conduct. KCE provides observers with robust training and in-the-field guidance, providing greater transparency in elections.

“Here at King County Elections, we believe in radical transparency. That means sharing our processes, explaining the details, and welcoming observers across the political spectrum. We have observers who come to us completely skeptical of the system, usually because of rumors and rhetoric.
"When they get to see how ballots are processed up-close and meet their neighbors who do this work every day, these same skeptical observers become our greatest advocates,” said Julie Wise, King County Director of Elections.
“When you see firsthand the care and attention that this team puts into every ballot, every voter, and every registration, it’s hard to come away anything less than impressed. I am so proud to have this team’s commitment to our community and to transparency recognized by our colleagues around the country.”

The Eagles award

For the second year in a row, KCE earned the Eagles Award for innovative use of technology. After being honored last year for utilizing a custom-built app suite to manage and track ballot collection from each of our ballot drop box locations, this year KCE was recognized for permanently shifting many essential elements of election administration to virtual processes.

When the onslaught of COVID-19 in 2020 necessitated moving many vital functions to a virtual space, KCE successfully met the challenge. As the world has changed, so to have KCE processes. By creatively utilizing a variety of remote work tools and platforms, our team has increased efficiency, improved communication, and helped our staff be even better prepared for each election.

Professional Practice Papers are shared by the Election Center with all members of the association, and awards are only given to programs that can be replicated in other jurisdictions.

Julie Wise, King County
Elections Director
Led by Director Julie Wise, King County Elections conducts accessible, secure, and accurate elections for nearly 1.4 million voters. Home to one-third of Washington State’s voters, King County was the largest vote-by-mail jurisdiction in the world for many years prior to more widespread adoption in 2020.

With core values of accuracy, equity, integrity, service, teamwork, and transparency, the team at KCE is committed to ensuring all King County voters can get registered, cast their ballot, and make their voices heard.

Four o'clock plants don't like the heat and stay up late

4 o'clock plant in the cool morning

Story and photos by Dale Bauer

“Four o'clock plants (Mirabilis jalapa) are bushy blooming perennials. These tuberous-rooted plants produce slightly pointed oval leaves on branching stems. They get their common name because of the way they bloom. The flowers open in the late afternoon, typically around 4pm or so, and then remain open until the next morning.”  - thespruce.com

Despite what this says, our two plants follow their own schedule, but it is generally based upon avoiding open blossoms during the heat of the day. The first photo shows what our east facing plant looked like at 8 this morning, as the sky was overcast and it was relatively cool.

Same plant at 5 in the afternoon

Here is the same plant at five in the afternoon. Despite the fact that it had been in shade since noon, the heat seems to restrain its exuberance for opening up.

9pm and the plant is opening up

It is, however, opening up now at 9 pm as can be seen in this flash photo.

We started these plants from seeds that we harvested on Vancouver Island 25 years ago. The two plants that have been with us most of that time are planted within a foot or two of the foundation of our basement.

They both have developed a tuber which is bigger than a large carrot, and I think that may keep them alive when we get the sort of winter weather that kills other plants farther from the house.

French-Algerian classical guitarist to start his 2022 North American Tour in Lake Forest Park with concert and master class

Sunday, August 21, 2022

UPDATE: The concert venue has been changed from a house concert to the Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore. See updated article here.

After releasing ‘Azwan,’ an album about our oneness and interconnectivity in the midst of a unifying global crisis, world renowned French-Algerian acoustic guitar master, vocalist and composer, Pierre Bensusan, returns to the USA and Canada, on the second leg of his 2022 North American Tour.

His first stop will be in Lake Forest Park, Washington where on Thursday September 8, 2022 he will teach a workshop, then the following evening, Friday September 9th performs a concert.

Says Bensusan of this tour:
"Even if I loved staying at my home, near Paris, for two years; playing, writing, taking the time, stopping running, sometimes locked down in Heaven... I felt a real relief to be able to play live again.
'The first part of my North American tour, this Spring, left me with an immense feeling of gratitude for the public who came to the concerts.
'There is nothing stronger than getting together around the music played live, especially when many were walking into a concert hall for the first time in two years."

A DADGAD GUITAR WORKSHOP WITH PIERRE BENSUSAN
HOUSE CONCERT
Info for both events @ peter.pjahn@gmail.com or 425-791-8430

ABOUT PIERRE

If World Music means the fusion of traditional, contemporary, jazz, classical and pop music, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument.

Also called “The Prince of DADGAD” (open tuning),  it is on stage that this artist has earned his stripes: among others, the Rose d'Or of the Montreux Festival, and being elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine!

His triple album "Encore" won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album...  Since his first performances in 1974 in France, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe, both solo and through numerous collaborations.

Born in French Algeria, Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning - a unique and transparent technique, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim.
