Power out to 3,940 people in central Shoreline

Sunday, August 14, 2022

By Diane Hettrick

At 11:04am the lights went out for 3,940 customers in central Shoreline. The problem appears to be at the power station on Meridian. The outage area goes from 155th to 205th and Aurora to I-5.

Seattle City Light is "investigating" the cause and might never tell us the reason. We are the only power outage in the county, so will be the priority.

Bad news is that the estimated restoration time is 6pm. They always pad the estimates but that still tells me that this is not a good time to open the refrigerator.

For those who are speculating, this is not a planned outage. Seattle Light notifies customers who will be affected by planned outages.

This is a different outage from yesterday's outage in Richmond Beach.

Aurora Village and the Aurora Village Transit Center have power.

Destinations: The return of CHOMP! - a major food festival in Redmond - Saturday, August 20, 2022

Contrary to popular opinion, CHOMP! is not this summer’s latest sequel to Jaws, Jurassic Park or even Little Shop of Horrors.

It is, in fact, a free, family-friendly, day-long event which focuses on sustainability, healthy food and social justice.

Even with these strong underpinnings, CHOMP! is a fun new kind of county fair highlighting local food production, green living, and recycling mixed with live music, food trucks and kids’ activities.

Now in its eighth year, CHOMP! celebrates all that is fresh, delicious, local, and sustainable in King County.

Taking place at Redmond’s Marymoor Park, 6046 W. Lake Sammamish Pkwy Redmond, WA 98052, the event supports King County Executive Dow Constantine’s Local Food Initiative.

The event highlights chefs and restaurants using locally sourced food; local organizations specializing in healthy and affordable foods; local farms and farmland support.

Over the past seven years CHOMP! has grown to an audience of more than 6,000 attendees and features a full day of free activities for the whole family.

Kiddos in the audience will have their own musical groups, live animals, zucchini races, wilderness awareness school, sustainable toys and clothing, and a scavenger hunt.
Adults can enjoy CHOMP’s farmers market, upscale bazaar, tree climbing, booths for sustainability organizations, ethnic food vendors and live concerts.

King County Master Gardeners will host their traditional Ask-A-Master-Gardener Booth where they’ll also feature hands-on gardening experiences for kids.

Gardening enthusiasts and newspaper readers will have opportunities to speak with local gardening columnist, Bruce Bennett – The Garden Guy.

This year’s Festival will be held Saturday, August 20, 10:00am to 6:00pm, at Marymoor Park in Redmond

For more information about CHOMP!, visit the group’s website at www.chomplocal.org

Get your babies vaccinated at the Senior Center Friday August 19, 2022

By Diane Hettrick

You can get your babies vaccinated against COVID-19 on Friday, August 19, 2022 at the Shoreline - LFP Senior Center.

Actually you can bring the whole family. They'll have vaccines for 6 months old to adult. You can get a first shot or a booster.

You can sign up for a time slot, and I suggest doing so for the littlest members of your family. If you can't get appointments at the same time for all family members, get as close as you can. Walk-ins had no trouble getting into the last clinic and this one should be fine, too.

You can use the QR codes in the flyer or the links below to pick a time slot:

Pfizer 6mo. to 4 yrs and Moderna 6 mo. to 5 yrs visit:

Adults and Children Ages 5 and Older visit:

Seems like summer just got here, but it's already time to plan for back to school. This clinic will cross a few items off your list.

Other info:
  • Everything is free and everyone is welcome, regardless of immigration status.
  • For information about safety visit: kingcounty.gov/vaccine
  • For questions about accommodations call 206-477-3977 or email: Publichealthaccommodations@kingcounty.gov

Help paint a new mural in Lake Forest Park at the Picnic in the Park Sept 10

The Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, along with the City of Lake Forest Park, ShoreLake Arts, and Urban ArtWorks, is collaborating with 17-year-old high school artist Austin Picinich to paint a 188-ft-long ‘Save Our Salmon Mural” at Animal Acres Park.

The project is a “mural with a purpose” with the goal to raise awareness for salmon restoration in McAleer Creek. The mural will transform the gray concrete barricades above McAleer Creek’s culvert with a vibrant mural of kokanee salmon on both sides of NE 178th St, near Brookside Elementary.

For those who want to be involved, you’re in luck – because the LFP Stewardship Foundation and Urban ArtWorks will be hosting a Community Paint Day on September 10th for over 150 community volunteers to help paint the mural.

Artist Austin will outline his salmon design in “paint-by-number” format, so all you need is a steady hand and a little community spirit to participate.

Previous art experience is optional and kids and families are welcome to join the painting fun – but all volunteers must sign-up in advance here.

The Community Paint Day will be held in conjunction with the City of Lake Forest Park’s ‘Picnic in the Park’ event with food trucks, live music, and salmon-themed activities in the adjacent Animal Acres Park.

This isn’t artist Austin Picinich’s first mural – earlier this year in April Austin led a 100+ foot Save Our Salmon Mural at Juanita Creek in Kirkland.

He’s on a mission to bring more meaningful, interactive public art along more local streams. McAleer Creek is the perfect location with Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation’s kokanee restoration project working to begin restoring native runs in the next four years.

Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation is currently fundraising to cover costs of the project, including paint and mural supplies. You can donate to the mural’s GoFundMe here.

You can learn more at the mural’s website: https://www.austinsart.net/salmonmural/lfp

Fireworks and a party in Kenmore to celebrate completion of the West Sammamish River Bridge

Kenmore celebrates their new bridge
Thousands attended the Grand Opening Celebration of the West Sammamish River Bridge Thursday night, August 11, 2022.

The City of Kenmore temporarily closed the newly completed West Sammamish River Bridge and invited the public to celebrate on the bridge deck with live music and entertainment, food, and other free tokens of appreciation.

“This was our way of saying thank you to all of our residents for supporting the bridge project,” Mayor Nigel Herbig said. “Not only did our taxpayers pay for the bridge, they also endured the inconvenience of the construction. For that, we are grateful.”

$39 million of the $43 million cost of the bridge came from sources outside of Kenmore, including state and federal grants. “I applaud the tenacity and hard work of City Engineer John Vicente and his team for applying for and securing the grants to build the bridge,” said City Manager Rob Karlinsey.

Vicente previously worked on the Aurora Avenue project for the City of Shoreline.

Party on the bridge deck.

Over 2,000 residents joined together on the bridge deck in celebration of the bridge’s completion. The event began with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6pm and ended with fireworks that were seen and heard around Lake Washington and into central Shoreline.

The bridge is part of 68th Ave which connects Kenmore on both sides of the river. It is the route to St. Edwards Park and Bastyr University. Simonds Road connects to 68th just on the other side of the bridge and leads to north Kirkland.

The bridge features a generous bicycle lane and pedestrian walkway.

Property values rose in Shoreline for 2022

Taxpayers to receive valuation notices soon
The King County Assessor’s office has begun the annual process of mailing property valuation notices to taxpayers.

Notices will be arriving in Shoreline soon.

Median residential property values rose by 20.6% in West Central Shoreline, and by 22.1% in East Shoreline.

Data indicates that home sale prices and overall home values have risen sharply in most King County neighborhoods and have dramatically spiked in northeast King County.

“Housing inventory for sale remains low, while demand remains very high,” said Assessor John Wilson.
“The resulting increase in home values is inevitable in this type of market, and that trend is particularly strong on the eastside.
"While voter approved special levies typically have more impact on property tax increase than do increases in home values, these value increases are so dramatic they may result in noticeable increases in property taxes in eastside communities.”

The total amount of property tax collected is derived from the budgets passed by state, county, and local governments, and by locally approved levies. The value of each property determines proportionally how much each taxpayer will pay of that total amount. When values rise dramatically in some areas, but not all, it can result in a shift, causing some taxpayers to pay more than others.

Each year, County Assessors set values on every commercial and residential property value in the state. These values – set effective as of January 1 by state law – are then applied to the next year’s tax bill. Property values are being set as of January 1, 2022, for taxes due in 2023.

First place: Jamm

What an incredible turnout from the community! Over the course of three nights featuring amazing local musicians and performances, there were over a 1,000 guests who came out to support the bands and ShoreLake Arts. Thank you to all of you for making it a week to remember!

A concert, a competition, a community event for all age groups, a platform to nourish talent, this year's Battle of the Bands was all that and more. The highlights were many, including a beer garden sponsored by Monka Brewing Co., food trucks, and musician Q and A’s on stage with emcee Sasha Cousineau. Of course all of this was capped off with five wonderful performances by such talented local musicians. The future is bright!

Speaking of wonderful performances, the group of seven judges had the difficult task of selecting the winners. Scott Markley from Annex Room Studio presented the 1st place award.

Congratulations to Jamn!

They gave the City of Lake Forest Park a stellar performance weaving through their songs, anchored by vivid lyrics and vocals. Undeniably catchy! They are getting $1,500 in cash and a day of recording studio time at the legendary Robert Lang Studios.

And congratulations to the runner-up Rug! E. Pruitt and Jeannie Rak presented the second place award to this band who gave us a powerful performance. They left an everlasting impression in just 15 minutes. Their prize is $1,000 in cash and a performer’s gear package from Mackie including speakers, tripod stands and a pair of dynamic microphones.

Runner up: Rug

This year also included the People’s Choice Award where the audience voted for their favorite band - Stargazy Pie.

The award of $500 in cash and recording studio time at Robert lang Studios was presented by Jack Malek of Windermere. Thank you to all of our judges Robert Lang, Tina Lang, Scott Markley, E. Pruitt, Jesse Field, Alex Donka, and Jeannie Rak for all of their work bringing this event together and a special shout out to Aidan Gallagher, one of the stars in the Netflix series, The Umbrella Academy, who stepped in as a guest judge on Tuesday night.

This gardening columnist has been hearing many tales from friends about their recent vacations and thought a ‘What I Did On My Vacation’ presentation was in order.

For the past several years, springtime has found the Garden Guy and his wife volunteering for a month or two at various western state and national parks.

It’s a chance to see other parts of the country without damaging one’s bank account (too badly).

This year followed suit with the RV heading south and two experienced interpretive park rangers working at Zion National Park for two months.

Southwestern Utah is the location of a chain of five stunning national parks (Arches, Canyonland, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon and Zion).

All are just above the northern rim of Grand Canyon.

These parks are part and parcel of the same geological formations. Yet, with similar geological history, the five Utah parks couldn’t be more different.

This is due, in part, to the varying elevation of the land.

The easternmost park, Arches, is the lowest at an average elevation of 4,000’ – 5,000’ and a temperature of 84 degrees when we happy campers were there on an sunny April afternoon.

Contrast this to, two days later, when the morning found us at the highest park, Bryce Canyon, at 9,500 ‘ with a 25 degree temperature and 8” of new snow.

If packing for a trip to Utah, definitely think about layering your clothing. The shoulder seasons of late spring and autumn are probably the best times to visit and hike these areas.

The wide range in weather (and as much as a 40 degree change in one day), coupled with an annual rainfall of 9” makes for a challenging environment for plants to grow.

Many of the area’s plants wouldn’t survive the northwest weather, not because of its mild temperatures, but, because of its dampness. roots would simply rot. There are several dozen native floral candidates which could, however, make the 1,200 mile northward transition and be prime specimens in our northwest yards.

What do you want with desert plants in your green spaces? Think about the western and southern exposures of your property, especially in summer, or general climate change, for that matter. Among the adaptable desert native perennials and shrubs your Garden Guy can recommend for consideration are:

Achillea millefolium Yarrow
Achillea millefolium (Yarrow) This sun-lover is a member of the daisy family and is a native perennial we encountered across most of the country while making a coast-to-coast trip three years ago. While native yarrows are usually white or a light pink, garden center cultivars now offer a variety of different colors, including red, white, pink, yellow and several pastel colors.

As with most of this plant list, after they are established, little care is required and they can survive just on rainwater and minimal summer irrigation.

Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly Weed) is a herbaceous perennial which is a tuberous rooted native. It typically grows in a clump to 1-3' tall and features clusters of bright orange to yellow-orange flowers from late spring through autumn. Flowers morph into the typical spindle-shaped seed pods.

For the artsy-craftsy folk amongst us, the seed pods are valued in dried flower arrangements.

The flowers are a nectar source for many butterflies and leaves are a food source for monarch butterfly larvae/caterpillars.

Berberis fremontii (Fremont Mahonia) may, at a natural 10’ tall, be a bit large for some urban landscapes, although it can be trimmed.

But, this evergreen shrub can form a good hedge or privacy screen. It is another fine pollinator plant with clusters of yellow flowers and purple berries in late autumn.

Dodecatheon pulchellum (Shooting Star) is member of the primula family. For such a delicate looking herbaceous perennial, it is often found growing in xeric (extremely dry) and desert habitats

It can found in the Great Basin Deserts. We happened to see them in the Mojave Desert! No supplemental watering there.

Erigeron photo courtesy nps.gov
Erigeron peregrinus (Mountain Daisy) is a member of the Aster family and is often called ‘daisies’ or ‘fleabanes.’

These perennial herbs spread by means of underground rhizomes and can grow in semi-desert to alpine environments.

In the ‘Four Corners’ region of the country, there are some 30 species of this hardy little plant and you can find natives with blue, purple, pink, or white flowers.

Erigeron is another top pollinator which will attract bees, butterflies and moths.

Dichelostemma photo courtesy fs.fed.us
Dichelostemma capitatum (Wild Hyacinth) is a herbaceous perennial and the only corm on this list.

Depending on its age the corm will have 2 to 15 flowers, in shades of blue, blue-purple, pink-purple, or white.

In the wild, these plants thrive in open disturbed environments and are a common post-fire succession species.

Lonicera photo courtesy mnfi.anr.msu.edu
Lonicera involucrata (Black Twinberry) is a deciduous shrub that grows to about 6’. So, it is not the typical vine-producing, powdery mildew- ridden, honeysuckle you may be used to.

It is probably best known for its yellow flowers and paired red fruits. This is another low-care shrub for the natives-centric garden. It is also good for pollinator gardens.

Check out the shrubs at Woodland Park Zoo’s Pollinator Patio this summer.

Penstemon photo

Penstemon utahensis (Beardtongue) is a large genus of roughly 250 species of flowering plants, with 20 species for in the Four Corners region.

While this specific native species can produce a dozen or more stems loaded with red flowers and grey-green leaves, other natives will have pink, purple and white coloration.

Potentilla photo courtesy
gardening.wsu.edu
Potentilla fruticosa (Shrubby Cinquefoil) is member of the rose family. It is a three foot branchy shrub with yellow flowers, although newer cultivars can also show red, orange or mango-colored blooms.

Although it is a southwest native, this potentilla appears to grow even better in our part of the world and you can expect blooms from June through September. Butterflies and bees love this little shrub and it is all but maintenance-free!

Consider adding one or two plants from beyond our northwestern environs to your home landscape. While bringing in plants from the southwest which you will enjoy because of their good looks and low care, these new additions will stump your neighbors while adding to a growing smorgasbord of new greenery which will be enjoyed by the ever-working pollinators in your garden. Happy Gardening all!
