2021 City of Shoreline Sustainability report now available

Monday, August 8, 2022

The 2021 Sustainability Report provides an overview of the City's achievements last year for five core focus areas and associated indicators, as outlined in our Sustainable Shoreline program.

Despite ongoing challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Shoreline community demonstrated resilience and leadership in addressing climate change.

A few highlights from the 2021 Report include:
  • Improved on 12 of 22 sustainability metrics and achieved three indicators: expanding the City's sidewalk network, increasing walkability, and greatly increasing the number of green residential units.
  • Joined the United Nations-backed Cities Race to Zero Campaign and committed to updated science-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets – 60% reduction by 2030 and net-zero by 2050.
  • Kicked off an update to our Climate Action Plan by recruiting eleven Community Climate Advisors, launching a public survey, and hosting a series of online Community Climate Conversations to gather community input for the Plan.
  • Completed a recycling contamination project at six multifamily properties with ~890 residents, reducing recycling contamination across all properties by an average of 53%.
  • Hosted weekly online classes with sustainability experts for 385 residents during Earth Day month.
  • Completed several projects to increase safe walking and biking and began updating the City's Transportation Master Plan, including hosting community outreach sessions to gather residents' input.
  • Partnered with Sound Transit and King Conservation District to increase urban tree canopy by providing trees, shrubs, and planting assistance to residents along the Lynnwood Link light rail corridor
  • Planted over 2,500 trees, added 0.43 acres of new parkland, and installed 13,443 ft2 of natural drainage systems to reduce polluted runoff.
  • Created a Climate Impacts Tool to help capital project managers easily identify current or future areas of vulnerability and opportunities to increase resiliency related to climate change.
  • Funded four Environmental Mini-Grant projects.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band competing in a series of Highland games in Scotland

Kevin Auld and the NWJPB
From Kevin Auld
Northwest Junior Pipe Band

What a fun day! The band had a great time competing at the North Berwick Highland Games in Scotland. No prizes for us today, but everybody had a blast.

We got to explore the beautiful seaside village of N Berwick and listen to some incredible pipe bands from Scotland, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Everyone we met was friendly and welcoming - especially the mayor N Berwick!

Tomorrow we're off to the Bridge of Allan games for more fun and music

About Northwest Junior Pipe Band

Northwest Junior Pipe Band is a Scottish bagpipe and drum band that provides world-class musical and leadership experience for youth (Ages 8-18) in the Pacific Northwest welcoming all in the pursuit of learning and performing the Celtic musical arts.

Tartan and Uniform
The band wears MacKenzie tartan kilts and a traditional ‘civilian’ style pipe band uniform. We are not associated with the MacKenzie clan, but take pride in our tartan’s association with the Highland Light Infantry, of which our founder Charlie McNeill was a member. More about the band’s history here.

Kevin and NWJPB have strong ties to Shoreline.

AG Ferguson: Court rules Navy failed to consider the damaging impacts of its Growler jet program

Growlers over Shoreline. Photo by Jan Hansen
Navy unlawfully expanded its Growler program without considering impacts of frequent, noisy flights

SEATTLE — A federal judge ruled that the U.S. Navy’s environmental review process for the Growler jet program expansion on Whidbey Island illegally failed to analyze the impacts of the noisy, often low-flying jets on classroom learning and local birds — a violation of the National Environmental Policy Act. This is the latest legal setback for the Navy in Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s lawsuit challenging the Whidbey Island Growler expansion.

The Attorney General’s Office is challenging the Navy’s March 2019 decision to authorize a significant expansion of its Growler program, increasing flight operations on Whidbey Island to more than 110,000 per year.

“The Navy has an important job,” Ferguson said. “But that does not relieve the federal government of its obligation to follow the law and take a hard look at the public health and environmental impacts of its programs. Today the judge ruled that the Navy fell short of its obligation.”

Clean up crew from Shoreline Covenant Church
By Kathy Plant

These days in Shoreline it is not uncommon to see work crews in protective construction clothing on our streets but there was something unusual about the crew working along N 185th Street on Saturday morning, July 30, 2022.

Armed with safety gear and supplies from the City of Shoreline 22 members of Shoreline Covenant Church worked diligently on a very warm summer morning picking up litter in the Echo Lake Neighborhood.

The litter was gathered, bagged, and later picked up by Shoreline’s Customer Response Team.

Litter Pick Up Kits are available to community groups by contacting crteam@shorelinewa.gov Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm at 206-801-2700.

The Safety Kit is designed to provide a group of Adopt-A-Road volunteers with the necessary materials to have a successful and safe cleanup event.

Thank you to Shoreline Covenant Church for your efforts in helping to make our city a clean and healthy environment for all.

Birmingham, England, August 4, 2022 – Star sprinter Gina Bass and newbie Wurrie Njadoe are in the semi finals of the women’s 200m semis of the commonwealth games ongoing in England.

Bass, earned yet another milestone after running a timing of 22:87 finishing second in her heat while Njadoe had 24:12 which gave her a berth in the semis with fastest best losers.

Bass who is in her second commonwealth games, is now looking for a historic final in 200m, after missing the slot in the recently concluded World Athletics Championship in Eugene, Oregon USA.

Njadoe representing Gambia for the first time, is now looking for a lifetime achievement. Both will run on Friday evening. The men counterparts all failed to progress to the next round.

Typically crews coming in from other areas help support the local crews who generally know the area and are trained and experienced in wildfire fighting. However, wind and weather drive the flames which can go any direction, toward any crew.

New Police Chaplain for Lake Forest Park Police Department

LFPPD Chaplain Andy Koss
New Police Chaplain, Andy Koss started with the LFP Police Department in mid-July.

Chaplain Koss also works as a chaplain for Northshore Fire Department. He graduated from the Chaplain Academy in 2017 and has been working for Northshore Fire since.

He was a Navy pilot for 20 years and, after retiring from the military, worked as a FedEx pilot. Chaplain Koss lives in the local area.

A police chaplain may be brought on scene to support first responders and their families during difficult times. Much like the police service, police chaplains are available 24/7, including weekends and holidays.

The service provided by chaplains to our officers — and to our community as a whole — is extremely important.

Chief Mike Harden offered this insight:
“I strongly believe that a chaplaincy program can support a culture where officers feel comfortable seeking help and finding support, and I also know that chaplaincy programs can also serve as support systems for officers following critical incidents and other traumatic event on- or off-duty. Chaplain Koss provides a great service to our staff and the community."

AG Ferguson: Latest action in statewide initiative to reform towing industry and protect active duty service members’ rights

VANCOUVER — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today a court order will require Chuck’s Towing, a Clark County towing company, to pay three service members for illegally selling their cars at auction.

The order also requires it to implement specific policies so it will not harm service members in the future.

The case is part of Ferguson’s ongoing Military and Veterans Initiative to stand up for Washington’s active-duty service members and veterans.

It involves engaging and educating service members and veterans about their rights and the resources available to them, vigorously enforcing the legal protections within the Attorney General’s authority and promoting and facilitating access to civil legal services.

Through the Initiative, Ferguson is working to reform Washington’s towing industry to ensure that tow companies comply with legal protections for active duty military.

Ridwell picks up hard to recycle items from subscribers

Ridwell makes it easy to sustainably reuse and recycle your stuff. They pick up hard-to-recycle items like plastic film, clothing, batteries, light bulbs, and a seasonal featured category right from your front door and get them to a partner that can reuse or recycle them.

With Ridwell, wasting less and reducing clutter around your home is simple and seamless.

Ridwell got started in Seattle as a father-son project when Ridwell founder Ryan's son Owen asked him what they could do with all the batteries they had piling up around their house.

On nights and weekends, they offered pickups to their neighbors in Queen Anne to help them waste less.

This project grew as more and more neighbors wanted to be a part of this new, collaborative way to reduce waste. Eventually this movement turned into Ridwell, a large community of people sharing new ideas and making a difference one pickup at a time.

Ridwell is a subscription service. They pick up a few core categories every pickup including plastic film, clothing, batteries, and light bulbs.

Members can also arrange for pickups of additional hard-to-recycle items like paint and styrofoam as an add-on to the service.

To help members waste less and positively impact their communities, Ridwell features rotating featured categories seasonally for things like non-perishable food, eyeglasses, bicycles, and more.

Over 97% of the material Ridwell picks up from members gets reused or recycled. To date, Ridwell members have saved over 5 million pounds of materials from landfills.
