Celebrations: 100 years for long-time Innis Arden resident Welma Hill

Wednesday, August 3, 2022

Happy 100th Birthday, Welma Hill
Welma Hill celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, July 28, 2022 with a big smile at her current home at Cogir at Northgate.

She was an Innis Arden resident from 1964 until she moved to Cogir at Northgate some 40 years later. She is still a member of Richmond Beach Congregational Church.

Welma Hansen was born July 28, 1922 in Madison, Wisconsin, the oldest of five children. Her father was an immigrant from Denmark.

She survived a burst appendix at age of three. Welma was left-handed until third grade, when she broke her left arm playing “Red Rover.” Welma adapted by becoming mostly right-handed (including handwriting), which she still is to this day.

The family struggled financially during the Great Depression, but Welma was able to stay in school. At Central High School in Madison she took courses in typing and shorthand. When she graduated in 1940 she was able to find work as a professional secretary, a career she continued through her life.

During WWII she was at a USO dance in Tomwah, Wisconsin where she met Bob Hill who was playing in the US Army band which was playing at the dance.

Welma married Bob Hill on August 4, 1945. The couple moved to Arkansas for the remainder of Bob’s enlistment. After his enlistment and the war ended, Bob formed a jazz band and Welma traveled with him as his band performed in Alaska and Idaho. As newlyweds, they moved to Bob's home town of Lilliwaup, WA.

Bob used the GI Bill to enroll in the engineering program at the University of Washington. They moved to the UW married student housing and Welma got a job as a secretary at the UW and supported Bob as he completed his degree.

Welma Hill at work

Bob had a long career as a Boeing Aerospace Engineer which included being part of Boeing’s AWACS design team (spy plane) during the Cold War (1950’s to 1980’s).

They started a family, adopting Bert Hill in 1959, and Eileen Hill in 1960. They bought their Innis Arden home in 1964. Bert and Eileen went to Sunset Elementary, Einstein Middle School, and Shorewood High School.

Welma was a secretary for Camp Fire USA. Bob continued his side hustle as a jazz musician, the leader and keyboard player of the Boogie Blues Band. They continued to perform until the early 2000’s with Welma as their biggest fan. After decades as a "band wife" attending Bob's late-night gigs, Welma remains a night person to this day.

They made frequent family trips back to Madison, Wisconsin and Bob’s idyllic childhood home of Lilliwaup on Hood Canal. The family camped all across the Pacific Northwest in their classic camper van.

Bob retired from Boeing but Welma started a new career at Res-Care, in the service of senior shut-ins. She continued well past her 80th birthday.

Eileen Hill married John Gunning in 1988. Welma become a grandmother in 1990 (Bobby), 1992 (Megan) and 1996 (Shannon).

They took trips to Switzerland and London and went to the annual Jazz festival in Moscow, Idaho. They regularly visited children and grandchildren, wherever they were living in the US or Canada and shared trips to the Oregon coast with Eileen's family.

After over 63 years of marriage, Bob passed away in 2009.

At 100, Welma is still reading The Seattle Times, cover to cover, almost every day. At Cogir at Northgate, she can sometimes be seen in her head-to-toe Seattle Seahawks fan gear.

If you would like to send her a birthday card, the address is Welma Hill, Cogir of Northgate, 11501 15th Ave NE, Seattle WA 98125.

Streets will be blocked for National Night Out NNO parties Tuesday

When you run into random street closures in residential neighborhoods around the area on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, with fire or police vehicles on the street, you most probably have run into a National Night Out Against Crime (NNO) block party.

Closing a street is not required - some people use long driveways or front lawns - but other choose to have their street closed off so they can set up tables and chairs in the street.

NNO is a campaign to help neighbors know each other so they know what is normal for their block and what needs to be checked out.

Favorite example: the Shoreline man who looked outside and thought "I didn't know those neighbors were moving" and went about his business. They weren't moving. They were being cleaned out by bold thieves with a rental truck.

If anyone gets photos of there event, send them to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

Fire season has started with the Vantage Highway Fire in Kittitas county

Fire map August 1, 2022
By Diane Hettrick

Smoke and fire move with the wind. If we have learned anything in recent years it is that Puget Sound is vulnerable to wildfires and smoke from anywhere in the west.

During that terrible summer when it seemed like everything was on fire and we couldn't open our windows for weeks, we were smothered with wildfire smoke from eastern Washington, northern California, and Canada - often all at the same time.

Local fires were put out quickly, thanks to the concentration of urban fire departments, but homes in Shoreline were threatened by fires on the sides of the freeway and local streets.

When fire districts in the state need help, they contact Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste to deploy state resources.

Kittitas County – State fire assistance has been mobilized under the Washington State Fire Services Resource Mobilization Plan in support of local firefighters who are working to contain the Vantage Highway Fire located in Kittitas County, near Vantage.

The Vantage Highway Fire is estimated at 5,000 acres and growing. Approximately 40 homes, windmill towers and infrastructure are threatened.

Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste authorized the mobilization of state firefighting resources on August 1, 2022, at 3:15pm at the request of Fire Chief William Rose, Kittitas County Fire District 4.

The Vantage Highway Fire started on August 1, 2022, at approximately 1:00pm.  Level 2 evacuations (Be ready) are in effect at this time. The fire cause is currently under investigation.

You can track live information about wildfires in all the western states with the new Fire Map.

The Bog: Checking out the neighbors

Monday, August 1, 2022

The green heron pair at Ronald Bog are getting to know the neighbors. The turtles have long claimed the logs in the Bog so it's hard to tell if this is a friendly greeting, a negotiation, or a warning.

Or maybe curiosity. It looks like the turtle has drawn in his head, so perhaps he's not so happy with the new neighbor. And the green heron looks like he's trying to figure out what the turtle did with his head.

They have time to figure it out.

This summer, nine female high school students in Washington were invited to participate in the Western Golf Association’s (WGA) second annual Seattle Caddie Academy, including Shoreline resident Rose Darley.

The nine students were given an opportunity to caddie at a local golf club.

Beginning June 18, 2022 participants have worked daily at Seattle Golf Club in Shoreline and Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, while living together for seven weeks at the University of Washington Evans Scholarship House.

The WGA’s Caddie Academy provides summer work opportunities to promising high school students who ultimately hope to pursue the Evans Scholarship – a full tuition and housing grant to college.

“After a wonderful inaugural summer last year, we are excited to expand the Seattle chapter, welcoming back four past participants and five new students who will learn invaluable life lessons on the golf course,” said Sarahi Ortiz, manager of Caddie Academy and Education at the WGA.

Rose was a member of the original Seattle group in 2021 and has returned for her second year with the program.

Participants, who all have financial need and strong academics, are selected to take part in the Caddie Academy during their freshman year of high school. On the golf course, students earn money, meet role models and learn invaluable life lessons. After successfully completing three summers, they become eligible to apply for the Evans Scholarship.

In 2022, more than 155 young men and women are participating in the Caddie Academy program across the country, with additional chapters in State College, Pennsylvania, Minneapolis and Chicago. More than 100 Caddie Academy alumni have gone on to earn the Evans Scholarship.

Kids Day at the Market

Kids' Day at the Shoreline Farmers Market
All photos by Steven H. Robinson
Saturday, July 30, 2022 was Kids Day at the Shoreline Farmers Market, held at the 192nd / Aurora park 'n ride. Besides the expected berries, peaches, vegetables, and $15 bouquets of flowers, there were booths just for the kids and their families.

A tour guide with a sign that said "Kids Day Tour" took families on a tour of farm stands to meet farmers, find out what they grew, and why farming is important.

A separate tour took them to Rainy Day Bees to find out out the importance of bees in food production.

Besides the busking musician, there were temporary tattoos, card making, coloring, and the PoP booth (Power of Produce).

The market is held every Saturday during the summer from 10am to 2pm.

UW Med: Booster shots with existing vaccines offset some Omicron evasion tactics

Dr. John Lynch, Medical Director, Infectious Diseases, Harborview Medical Center says:
“I am very pro-booster. I think that if you're eligible for boosters in any way, shape, or form – you should definitely get them. For those who are eligible for that second booster, absolutely get it on board.
"I do not think that waiting for an omicron-specific booster or vaccine in the fall is necessary. We really know we're in a surge right now with a highly transmissible variant.”

The Origin of the Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza

Shoreline Veterans' Recognition Plaza

Look for the veterans group at the Shoreline Farmers Market
August 13 and September 10, 2022

The Origin of the Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza

By Doug Cerretti
Photos courtesy Shoreline Veterans Association except as noted

It all began over ice cream.

In early 2010, Veterans Frank Moll and Bob Grasmick were attending an ice cream social at Ridgecrest elementary school. Frank was sitting at a table when Bob approached and asked what he was up to.

Dwight Stevens, left, and Frank Moll, right taking brick orders
at a community event. Photo by Jerry Pickard.
Frank said he was working on à plan to honor veterans in Shoreline. As they continued talking Bob invited Frank to join Starr Sutherland, Jr Post 227 of The American Legion and Frank said he would join if Bob would join him to help with the plan to honor veterans.

Both agreed. Soon after, Frank Moll recruited Dwight Stevens to work on the project and the Shoreline Veterans Association was formed with Frank Moll as Founder and Dwight Stevens as Chairman.

Bob Grasmick, left, being presented a certificate by Commander Larry Fisher.
Besides Moll, Grasmick and Stevens, other Legion Post 227 members joined the Shoreline Veterans Association including Raymond Coffey, Russell Greaby, Gerry Shogren and Post 227 Auxiliary members Lois Grasmick (Bob's wife), Phyllis Moll (Frank's wife) and Marcia Sanders.

Other members who joined the Association were Sonny Alvarez, John Fahnestock, Marcie Riedinger and Lynn Cheney.

On July 28, 2014 the Shoreline City Council voted 7 to 0 for approval of the Veterans Recognition Plaza after a presentation by Dick Deal, City Parks Director, and Dwight Stevens, Chairman of the Shoreline Veterans Association.

Architect's design
The Association then set to work with a goal of building a Veterans Recognition Plaza adjacent to Shoreline City Hall. Post 227 Member, Chris Eggen, who at the time was Shoreline Deputy Mayor, helped secure the cooperation of the city and an architect was commissioned to design the plaza.

Next began the campaign of raising the needed funds. The Veterans Recognition Plaza would contain five benches, five granite obelisks representing the military services, a flagpole at the center of the plaza and an area paved with red bricks that could be engraved to honor a veteran.

Whenever veteran-related meetings occurred over the next several years, you would see Dwight Stevens manning a table, selling bricks to raise funds.

Dwight Stevens and County Councilmember Rod Dembowski
In addition the Starr Sutherland, Jr. Post 227 of The American Legion made a significant contribution and King County Councilman Rod Dembowski arranged for the county to make a large contribution for the project.

When it became clear that the needed funding would be forthcoming, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site of July 6, 2015. After six years from inception the plaza was completed and a dedication ceremony was held May 21, 2016.

Groundbreaking
The plaza is a thing of beauty and a fitting tribute to the many veterans who have served and future veterans who are currently serving their nation. Unfortunately, Frank Moll passed away before seeing the results of the project he started.

Dwight and Helen Stevens at the dedication
The nearly 500 bricks that are already in place at the Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza by Shoreline City Hall are a permanent reminder of our Friends and Relatives who have served in the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines to preserve our hard earned and fought for Freedoms.

The Veterans Recognition Plaza is located north of Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Buy a Brick

Engraved bricks to honor Veterans past and present can be purchased for a $100 donation. A single brick can be engraved with the Veteran's name, service branch and years served. You can choose to have your brick engraved at the Plaza or shipped to you to display at home. This would be a great gift to honor a Veteran family member or friend.

Bricks can be purchased online from The American Legion Post 227’s webpage or you can print out the order form, fill it out and mail it in with your check or credit card number. Purchases are tax deductible as the Shoreline Veterans Association is a 501 (c) 19 non-profit.

In the near future, the Shoreline Veterans Association will have a booth at Shoreline Farmers Market https://shorelinefarmersmarket.org/home
August 13 and September 10 from 10 am to 2 pm.
Sample bricks will be displayed and orders taken.
