A wonderful day at the 2022 Old Dog Haven Festival

All photos by Wayne Pridemore

We had a truly wonderful day on July 16, 2022 at Cromwell Park in Shoreline!

Many thanks to our dedicated Board of Directors for organizing this amazing event and to all the volunteers, sponsors, donors and attendees who made it such a success.

We have not been able to gather (in person) to celebrate old dogs for two years and our Board wanted to put together something very special to honor our dogs and all our wonderful supporters.

Jimmy Buffett groupies!
They decided to change it up this first year back and have a Festival to celebrate being together and being able to provide homes for senior dogs in need.

The event was a tremendous success! We had nearly 500 people in attendance and far surpassed our fundraising goals.

"Pie" with companion Dawn Ford
Dawn owns The Barkery - a food truck for dogs
and created all the recipes for the treats

There were a variety of carnival games/events, tasty food trucks, lots of vendors with samples, an amazing silent auction, and a marvelous collection of old (and young) dogs and their humans.

"Penny' with her lick artwork tile

Our sincere thanks to all those who made this happen and all who attended to support old dogs!

Osprey - spread your wings

Tuesday, July 26, 2022

A treetop bird, rather than a backyard bird, ospreys are common around here. They nest in the tops of tall trees near water so they can easily dive to catch fish. They are happy with both freshwater and saltwater fish.

Unique among North American raptors for its diet of live fish and ability to dive into water to catch them, Ospreys are common sights soaring over shorelines, patrolling waterways, and standing on their huge stick nests, white heads gleaming.
These large, rangy hawks do well around humans and have rebounded in numbers following the ban on the pesticide DDT. Hunting Ospreys are a picture of concentration, diving with feet outstretched and yellow eyes sighting straight along their talons.

Hot weather tips - updated

Lee and Roger Lageschulte in 82 degree weather at Diablo Dam

By Diane Hettrick

My Inbox is full of dire warnings about how heat will kill me and pages of common sense tips of the "don't drop your toaster in the bath water" variety.

Stay in the shade. Don't leave kids and dogs in the car. Wear a life vest in the water. Drink a lot of water. Don't play strenuous (or any) sports.

Stay in the shade
We have not had really warm weather for quite a while, but I don't remember this much fuss when we were suffering under the infamous "heat dome" of past years and heat combined with wildfire smoke.

So Tuesday is the hottest day and the higher temperatures will continue to Friday night. (see our weather report here).

There's no question that some people are more vulnerable and some homes / apartments are hotter than others. Few people have decent air conditioning.

If you need to get out of your home or if you are unhoused, there are a few places you can go to cool off. Call first to be sure of their hours.
Here's my personal best tip. Soak a hand towel in cold water - wring out the excess water - and wear it around your neck. When it dries, start over again.

Updated with Kenmore and Sno-Isle library locations. Snohomish County. Seattle spray park.

Scene on the Sound: The Navy versus fishmen and commerce

Aircraft carrier in view

Story and photos by Jan Hansen

Aircraft carrier still coming

I first heard a large ship horn.

Blue lights were flashing to warn boats to move

Then the blue lights came on as the escorts tried to move boats from favorite fishing spots.

Really not wise to argue with a nuclear powered aircraft carrier

Even the barges seemed to hesitate giving berth.

Even barges were in the way

In settlement the USS Nimitz had the right of way.

King county transmission rates are edging into HIGH. Masks are recommended for indoor events.

Dr. John Lynch, Medical Director, Infectious Diseases, Harborview Medical Center says:

“I am very pro-booster. I think that if you're eligible for boosters in any way, shape, or form – you should definitely get them. For those who are eligible for that second booster, absolutely get it on board. I do not think that waiting for an omicron-specific booster or vaccine in the fall is necessary. UW Med: BA.5 variant is 'one of the largest surges we’ve had'

Dr. John Lynch, Medical Director of Infection
Control at Harborview Medical Center
UW Medicine Infectious Diseases physician Dr. John Lynch says the BA.5 variant’s apparent strength in evading previous immune protection is driving a summer surge in new COVID-19 cases.

“We're probably at a number (of total cases) less than what we saw in January, but something very sizable and probably one of the largest surges we've had through the whole pandemic,” said Lynch, the medical director of infection control at Harborview Medical Center.

As of July 22, 86 inpatients were receiving treatment at UW Medicine hospitals for COVID-19 infections.

The most recent UW Virology data available from July 3 shows the BA.5 variant accounted for 66.9% of the lab’s sequenced positive COVID-19 tests.

Lynch says the momentum of the latest variant should serve as encouragement for those eligible to stay current on booster vaccinations.

“I am very pro-booster. I think that if you're eligible for boosters in any way, shape, or form – you should definitely get them. For those who are eligible for that second booster, absolutely get it on board,” said Lynch.
“I do not think that waiting for an omicron-specific booster or vaccine in the fall is necessary. We really know we're in a surge right now with a highly transmissible variant.”

People under age 50 who are not immunocompromised remain ineligible for a second COVID-19 booster shot at this time. Stay apprised on the latest developments by visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Western Chiefs Association introduces Fire Map to track wildfires in the western United States

Sunday, July 24, 2022

Washington is clear of wildfires so far
Fire Map

July 11, 2022 (Wilsonville, OR) – As the country prepares for a summer of excessive heat and drought, the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) introduces its Fire Map (https://fire-map.wfca.com/), to provide near real-time information about active wildfires.

“The current climate situation is incredibly scary,” said Chief Mark Niemeyer, Vice President of the WFCA and Fire Chief of the Boise Fire Department. “The WFCA is providing public access to definitive information around the paths of wildfires so that communities can quickly take action,” said Niemeyer.

The WFCA Fire Map pulls data from the US Forest Service via National Interagency Fire Center IRWIN feed, and 911 Dispatch data via PulsePoint to track the location of the wildfire as they start and while they’re burning. The WFCA Fire Map is the first map of its kind to pull such data from 911 Dispatch in relevant areas.

“The WFCA is committed to provide an even deeper level of intelligence around wildfires as they happen,” said Chief Niemeyer. As the WFCA looks to the future, it is creating a development path in the next year which will include 3D and predictive mapping models, air quality and weather data, as well as text message notifications.

The WFCA Fire Map would not be possible without the working partnership between WFCA, PulsePoint Foundation, the US Forest Service, and Mapbox.
About the WFCA

The Western Fire Chiefs Association represents fire related emergency service organizations throughout the west coast and Western Pacific Islands. The WFCA is dedicated to protecting people and the environment from the occurrence and outcomes of fires and other natural, technological and human-behavior-caused emergencies.

WeatherWatcher: Heat Watch in effect for Tuesday afternoon through Friday evening

National Weather Service in Seattle

Right on schedule, a heat wave is coming to the area this week. The end of July and beginning of August is typically the hottest time of the year, often with heat waves bringing temperatures into the mid 80's to mid 90s. This year is no different as the forecast is calling for high temperatures in the 90's between Tuesday and Friday.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued an excessive heat watch, in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Friday evening. This watch will likely turn into an advisory by Monday evening.

  • Temperatures on Monday are expected to creep into the mid 80's.
  • Tuesday through Friday we are expecting high temperatures in the upper 80's to low 90's.
  • Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be the hottest, with temperatures possibly reaching the mid 90's.

Low temperatures through the week are expected to be down only to the mid to upper 60's. Areas closer to the Puget Sound such as lower parts of Richmond Beach and Innis Arden will likely be a few degrees cooler especially during the hottest part of the day.

Next weekend we cool down a little bit, but we are still expected to get into the 80's both days. I think it's safe to say that summer has finally arrived. We'll all quickly miss that colder and wetter than normal weather pattern we've had for the past 4 months.
