This photo, like Mike Remarke's photo looking toward the Cascades in Carl Dinse's weather report, was taken on Thursday evening, June 2, 2022 as the thunderclouds were rolling in.

This view is over Puget Sound, with the storm clouds clearly visible. There was a brief, but impressively loud thunderstorm Thursday night, followed by a prolonged storm that woke us up Friday morning.

King County Public Health: Indoor air quality is the key to staying healthy

With mask mandates lifted, you might have recently seen more emphasis on proper ventilation inside businesses to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

However, it’s not just businesses that need to worry about ventilation. Did you know that the average person spends 90% of their time indoors

That makes us vulnerable to indoor air contaminants — including, but not limited to, COVID-19.

Whether it’s to protect you from spring allergies, wildfire smoke season or illnesses like COVID, it’s good to know what to do to improve your indoor air quality.

Shoreline Farmers Market finds a new home - Saturdays 10am - 2pm

By Diane Hettrick
All photos by Steven H. Robinson

The Shoreline Farmers Market opened for the season on Saturday, June 4, 2022. It's easy to see why they are so excited about their new location in the 192nd Park n Ride.

They are tucked into a corner of the lot with a backdrop of green grass and trees. Booths are arranged in a way that makes it easy to move around. The whole layout is cohesive in a way that previous locations did not accommodate.

Lined up against a line of trees and grass

Many booths held farm-fresh produce. Products, such as honey, and ready to eat food. A few information booths. Musicians.

Steve, the morning person, was there just after opening. Or maybe just before. A few people were still loading in, or unpacking cartons, or relaxing and talking to staff before the rush began.

The market is scheduling two musicians every Saturday

The whole scene really had the feel of a small town market day - which it is, of course. Entertainment, food, music, neighbors, and your weekly shopping.

The Shoreline Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 10am - 2pm at the Shoreline Park n Ride at N 192nd and Aurora Ave N.

WeatherWatcher: Scattered thunderstorms threat returns on Sunday, and La Niña

Convective clouds and thunderstorms on Friday June 3, 2022.

A brush with thunderstorms on Thursday and then a direct hit of thunderstorms waking us up Friday morning led to a lot of dramatic looking skies to end our week. The threat of even more thunderstorms returns on Sunday and Sunday evening.

When thunder roars go indoors.

Showers continue Monday, then on Tuesday we will get a break and it might seem like a mid-April day, with sunny skies and high temperatures into the low 70's. Clouds and showers return Thursday into the next weekend. Next Friday although is a long stretch as far as forecasts go, and looks to be the wettest day of the week.

Temperatures are warmer than they have been, finally. We should be breaking the 60 degree mark every day next week, three out of the next six days could break 70°F, despite the clouds and rain showers. You can blame all this cool and wet weather on La Niña, which is continuing strong into its third season in a row.

The current ENSO forecast calls for likely continued La Niña conditions through summer and at least next fall/winter. This is being called a triple dip La Niña; they are rare, but not unheard of. We've had several events in the past 50 years where there were three La Niña years in a row.

What does this mean for our local weather? More of the same, colder than average, wetter than average here in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Summer should be somewhat of a relief from last year, with hopefully no major heat waves. We can't rule them out completely but we likely will be cooler this summer as a general average than we have been for a few years.

Fewer days in the 80's, a lot fewer days breaking 90°F, and 100°F is unlikely. More thunderstorms are possible, more rain events and clouds.

Armed carjacking at Northgate Thursday leads to police manhunt in Lake City

On Thursday, June 2, 2022, Seattle Police tracked a group of violent carjackers from Northgate to Lake City and captured one of them. The others escaped by going into the Thornton Creek ravine.

7pm
On Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 7pm, an armed carjacking occurred at N Northgate Way and Stone Ave N. The victim had been robbed at gunpoint and his Dodge Dart was stolen.

Officers responded to the area to search for the victim’s vehicle.

7:30pm
At about 7:30pm, residents of an apartment complex in the 11300 block of 8th Ave NE called 911 to report seeing / hearing shots fired, associated with three vehicles in the parking lot.

The callers reported multiple suspects surrounding the vehicles. One of the vehicles was described as a Land Rover (possibly associated with a previous incident) and the suspects were reported to be removing the plates from the vehicle.

Officers responded to the scene but two of the three suspicious vehicles were gone, along with the suspects. The lone vehicle left behind turned out to be the Dodge Dart from the N Northgate Way/Stone Ave N carjacking.

10pm
At 10pm, a witness to the 7:30pm incident reported that suspect vehicles involved in the shooting and carjacking returned to the same parking lot where the incident occurred. Reporting party reported hearing the suspects screaming and another gunshot. Vehicles involved were reported to be stolen and had no plates.

Officers responded and began setting up containment around the parking lot the suspects were hanging around in. Just prior to making contact, the suspects left in two of the involved vehicles. Officers located one of the suspect vehicles and attempted to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle fled.

Due to the immediate threat to the public presented by these armed suspects, officers initiated a pursuit.

The suspect crashed into a parked car in the area of 115th St NE / 30 Ave NE in Lake City. Three suspects fled on foot.

One suspect was located and taken into custody. A firearm was recovered.

Containment was set up and K9 responded to assist. K9 conducted a track from the crash scene and recovered evidence.

Neighbors reported a large and prolonged police response with police vehicles slowly patrolling the streets for an hour. Air support was not available.

The K9 unit tracked the suspects to a large very heavily wooded ravine around Thornton Creek. After an extensive search the other two suspects were not located. Gun Violence Reduction Unit (GVRU) responded and assisted officers in processing the scene.

Shoreline police officer spots and captures robbery suspect

On May 24, 2022 just after 6pm, Shoreline Police Officers were dispatched to a robbery that just occurred at a convenience store in the 19900 block of Ballinger Way.

The suspect came into the store and asked to look at an item in the counter showcase. As the employee (victim) bent over to open the showcase the suspect sprayed him with pepper spray.

The suspect stole about 250 packs of cigarettes worth about $2500 and left the scene.

Investigating officers were able to swab for DNA and lift a partial print at the scene. Security footage captured at the scene showed a white male suspect wearing blue jeans, a black jacket and a blue face mask, carrying a large black backpack.

On May 30, 2022 at 7pm, MPO Fritz and Officer Stultz were on routine patrol in the City of Shoreline at NE 205 st at the I-5 overpass when MPO Fritz noticed a male and a female subject walking westbound towards I-5 on the south shoulder.

The male subject was approximately 6 foot tall, wearing a dark colored jacket, dark jeans with the bottom of the jeans rolled up, gray converse shoes, and a light blue surgical mask pulled down below his nose/mouth. The male subject was also carrying a black backpack.

MPO Fritz instantly recognized the male subject as the suspect from the robbery that occurred on May 24th.

After comparing the photos of the robbery suspect to the male subject they saw walking on NE 205 St they stopped and arrested him without incident.

The suspect was booked into King County Jail for Robbery.

Student loan debt discharged for students of Corinthian (Everest) colleges

Attorney General Bob Ferguson today announced that 16,850 Washingtonians who attended any school owned by Corinthian Colleges, a for-profit college that engaged in deceptive conduct, will receive $157.9 million in relief.

The U.S. Department of Education discharged $5.8 billion nationwide in student loans for Corinthian College students across the country.

Ferguson had been calling for this action from the federal government since 2016.

He asserted, and the federal government finally agreed, that every borrower who attended Corinthian was subject to illegal conduct.

This discharge applies automatically — borrowers do not need to do anything to receive relief. This relief applies to all remaining loans for Corinthian Colleges, including for borrowers who have not yet applied for a “borrower defense” discharge.

Corinthian owned and operated Everest College campuses in Everett, Fife, Tacoma, Bremerton, Renton, Seattle and Vancouver until February of 2015, when they were sold to Zenith.

“Washingtonians’ student loan crisis is now $158 million smaller,” Ferguson said. “This is justice. The thousands of Washingtonians who were harmed by Corinthian’s illegal conduct deserve this relief from crushing student loan debt.
"Today’s outcome is the culmination of years of investigation and collaboration between the federal government, my office, and other state attorneys general. Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration had every chance to take this action, and they refused. I applaud the Biden Administration for doing the right thing.”

Ferguson has previously called on the Department of Education to discharge federal student loans for former Corinthian students. In December of 2016, Ferguson sent a letter to department officials calling for automatic loan discharges for victims of Corinthian’s fraud. In 2017, Ferguson, along with other state attorneys general, submitted a joint request seeking group discharge for Corinthian borrowers in their states.

Shoreline Fire and Northshore Fire now operate as one department under contract for services

Friday, June 3, 2022

By Fire Chief Matt Cowan

We are happy and excited that after many years of hard work, the implementation of a contract for services between Northshore and Shoreline Fire began this week!

As a result of this contract, a few changes are being made.

For example, Northshore Fire Department is becoming Shoreline Fire Department. However, we want to assure everyone that these changes will not impact the services that are being provided or our response times to emergency calls.

In fact, as we all become one, big Department, we will be better prepared and ready to serve the Community. Over the remainder of this year we will be improving staffing levels and increasing service levels, while at the same time becoming more efficient. The new organization will join Northshore and Shoreline under a contract for services.

This contract is not a merger, but will provide for many of the efficiencies that would be gained under a merger

The Northshore Fire Department Board of Commissioners will still remain in their positions to ensure that the services being provided either meet or exceed their high expectations to the citizens in Lake Forest Park and Kenmore.

These are some truly exciting times for both organizations and the Communities that we serve.

Over the coming months we will be rolling out some new programs such as an enhanced water rescue team, and an additional aid car in Lake Forest Park.

The additional aid car will be staffed during the day to not only increase overall staffing levels, but also to improve our ability to transport patients to the hospital. This service decreases transport time and improves continuity of care, resulting in better overall outcomes.

As always, we are dedicated to protecting the health, life, and property of the Community with professionalism, respect, and integrity. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns and we will be happy to help! Thank you for your continued support!
