Rose and poem

One Perfect Rose

A single flow’r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet—
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
“My fragile leaves, ” it said, “his heart enclose.”
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it’s always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.

American Legion hosted founder of Heroes' Café at their May meeting

Gary Walderman, founder of the
Lynnwood Heroes' Café
By Doug Cerretti

The Starr Sutherland Jr Post 227 of The American Legion in Shoreline, WA had the honor to host Lt Col Gary Walderman United States Air Force and Founder and Director of Heroes' Café in Lynnwood at our general membership meeting May 3, 2022.

Gary began his service in Commissioned Officer Training School resulting in his commission as a 2nd Lt December 21, 1979. He was first assigned as an Imagery Intelligence Officer responsible for photographic processing and interpretation.

Gary continued as an intelligence officer gaining more responsibly as he rose through the ranks in supporting operations in the Cold War, Grenada invasion, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the Bosnia-Croatia War and other operations around the world.

Gary retired from the USAF after 21 years as a Lt Col.

The Founding of Heroes' Café Lynnwood

In 2016, Veteran Paul Frederickson moved to Snohomish County from Wisconsin and told Gary of a veterans' organization called American Heroes' Café where veterans gathered for camaraderie and to share experiences.

It was like a family get-together without all the drama. It didn’t matter which branch of the service you are in; whether you served in combat or not, where you served, or what era.

On August 2, 2016 Gary and Paul decided that this could work here. The purpose of Heroes' Café is to foster a positive outreach, interaction, establish a healthy and safe environment, enhance veteran welfare, and increase camaraderie among veterans and to offer a helping hand to veterans in need.

Welcome sign in Lynnwood 2019

With these goals established the first Heroes' Café in Lynnwood was held January 31, 2017 with the help of his team of veterans, American Red Cross Support to Armed Forces, the City of Lynnwood and the Verdant Community Wellness Center.

Gary mentioned that they would be happy if 15 to 20 people came. Remarkably, 125 veterans showed up - causing a scramble for more coffee and food. That level of attendance continued to grow to a high of 165 and has maintained itself for almost six plus years. During the pandemic numbers dropped but are now back to those lofty numbers.

Gary Walderman is presented with a certificate
from the American Legion
Gary established a standard format for Heroes' Café, Heroes' Café starts at 9:00am with coffee and pastries, followed by a veterans' program and lunch ending at 1pm. There is no cost to participate. Veterans, Family and Friends are welcome.

While many veterans' organizations have similar goals, Heroes' Café is unique, as there is nothing to join, you just show up.

Because of the success of Heroes' Café, the American Red Cross of North King County approached the Shoreline Veterans Association to start a Heroes' Café in Shoreline, which held their first gathering March 9, 2021.

Heroes' Café Lynnwood meets the fourth Tuesday of every month from 9am to 1pm at New Life Church, 6519 188th St SW, Lynnwood, WA 98037

Heroes' Café Shoreline meets the second Tuesday of every month from 9am to 1pm at Seattle Scottish Rite Center, 1207 N 152nd Street, Shoreline, WA 98133.

Shorewood PTSA honors Marianne Deal Stephens as their Outstanding Educator

Marianne Deal Stephens
For their annual awards, the Shorewood PTSA honored Marianne Deal Stephens as their Outstanding Educator.

Here’s what was said about Marianne in her nomination:

Marianne is always on the ball when it comes to providing pathway and college preparedness/application information, providing just the right information at just the right time.

Her emails are full of so much relevant information, reassurance, and solid counsel, provided in an organized way that makes it easy to find just what is needed.

And, she serves literally EVERY single student on campus. As a parent, I find her to be responsive and reassuring. Both of my students (one now in college) brighten up whenever her name is mentioned at the dinner table, and both agree she is truly amazing, and an unsung hero.

Shorewood is truly made better by her presence.

Marianne is the former School Board reporter for the Shoreline Area News. She left the SAN for the job at Shorewood.

We have not been able to find anyone with her skill set to replace her, so it is good to know that she is appreciated at Shorewood!

After 100 years a final goodbye to Borracchini’s Bakery

Fire crews were in a defensive position preparing to pour water on the fire from outside the building. Photo courtesy Seattle Fire.

By Diane Hettrick

After closing in the pandemic last year, a fire has put a final end to Borracchini’s Bakery and Mediterranean Market in the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle.

The family business was founded by Italian immigrants, Mario and Maria Borracchini, in 1922 and served generations of Puget Sound residents.

Located at 2307 Rainier Ave S, Seattle, WA 98144, its delicious and creative cakes drew customers from a wide geographic range.

If you provided a photo when you ordered your cake, they would  put a frosting bust of the guest of honor on top of the sheet cake. And their cakes tasted better than anyone's - well worth a drive.

The fire was discovered mid-afternoon. Seattle Fire spent four hours actively fighting the blaze and were still doing mop up into the night. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

LFP Council Corner - Upcoming Council Business

LFP Deputy Mayor Tom French
By Deputy Mayor Tom French

As I write this column, the temperatures outside have returned to somewhat normal levels after one of the coldest and wettest springs on record. While our weather is improving, it appears that the pandemic is going to continue to challenge us for some time to come.

Despite this, after months of incredible work by the City Administration and contractors, and with proper safeguards and technology in place, the City Council was finally able to enjoy meeting in person three times in the past several weeks. I encourage you all to attend a Council Meeting in person or virtual utilizing the City’s advanced hybrid meeting technology.

For the returning Councilmembers it had been more than 26 months since we had met in person; for the three new Councilmembers the first time for us to all be together in person was at our retreat in early May. It is a real pleasure for all of us to sit around a table as a group and enjoy very productive conversations. We have even had a visitor in the Council chambers on two of the occasions!

The months ahead are busy ones for the City Council. Our calendars are going to be filled with the usual business of the City and other important topics:

Minor updates to the tree ordinance –The Council will be considering recommendations made by the Tree Board in a continuing effort to simplify and improve the regulations.

Pedestrian and multimodal safety and lowering speed limits - The Council will be continuing to discuss this topic which was first presented at a recent Committee of the Whole Meeting. In our recent retreat, this topic was clearly at the top of nearly all of each of our lists for near-term improvements in our community. Lowering speed limits, traffic calming, separated walking routes and a neighborhood Healthy Streets program (similar to Seattle’s) are all under consideration by the Council.

Biennial budget – June will begin the kickoff of our very busy full budget season. Look for an upcoming calendar of Budget and Finance Committee meetings where the public is always welcome. With the excellent guidance of the Administration and city staff, our community has weathered the pandemic well, despite very uncertain times and challenging economic stresses. However, this budget will be a lean one, with very little room for additional programs or policies and the community will have to make some tough choices and compromises.

These are just a few of the topics we will be discussing over the coming months, and we all look forward to seeing you in person or virtually at a future meeting.

As always, be well and be gentle on yourselves.

--Deputy Mayor Tom French

About the artists:

Divided We Stand by Ross Collado
Ross Collado

Ross Boa Collado identifies as Filipino-American and self-taught abstract expressionism painter living in Seattle. As early as 6 years old, his siblings, cousins and friends relied on him for anything that required creativity. He designed greeting cards and classroom visual aids with crayons and watercolors. In college, he studied Computer Science and worked in a related field for a while. His artistic process is highly intuitive. Each piece begins with an overall concept or idea, but what is truly unique is how the direction of the brushstrokes and colors that he uses builds an overall composition and evolves over time. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece that feels intentionally created for the owner and sparks conversation while in the room.

Currently, his works are on display and have been sold in several coffee shops in Seattle: Espresso Vivaci on Broadway, Capitol Hill and Yale Street in Downtown Seattle, Broadcast Coffee Roasters on Yesler Way for the month of October and November in 2021. "Green Flash '' (4ft x 5ft) is, a recent, commissioned work for an NGO fundraiser based in Portland Oregon and is now on display at his residence. "Six Feet By Eight Feet '' (20in x 20in) was featured in the September 2021 issue of Northwest Yachting. Seattle Refined featured Ross as Artist of the Week during the 3rd week of September 2021. He was also included in the 425 Magazine Holiday Gift Guide in December 2021.

Artist Statement

Making art for me is not therapeutic, but rather a series of intense moments. "It's like I am walking through a creative tunnel of exploding colors and ideas waiting to come to life through a brush stroke." My passion for acrylic painting took off in the midst of COVID-19 and at the heart of BLM protests in Capitol Hill in Seattle. "Nightfall," my first commissioned piece, was created in 2020 as cries of "Justice for George Floyd" echoed and a tear gas smell filled the area where I live.

Firmly holding on to Leonardo Da Vinci's famous quote; "Art is never finished, only abandoned.", I fuel my passion with equal fervor for travel and exploration of hiking trails leading to grand vistas and waterscapes. My never ending quest of finding beauty in everything and everywhere go hand in hand with my mission to represent beauty that moves the heart, mind and soul.

Koi Pond by Judith Perry

Judith Perry

Judith Perry is an award winning artist and a signature member of the Hawaii Watercolor Society and president of the Women Painters of Washington. She has studied at the finest Art Schools and continues learning from professional artist's workshops. Her style is typically bold and has been influenced by James Whistler with his high contrasts in value, Lucien Freud and his search for the character in figure work, and Mitch Albala for his treatment of the landscape. She prefers painting in a series of the same subject matter so there can be an in-depth presentation. It is a method of pulling the viewer in for a deeper understanding. After living many places from the east coast to Hawaii she is now living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The lushness of natural geography is now a focus and involves a study by seasons, from the weed of winter to the reflections of the waters of Puget Sound in the summer. She is now giving workshops as well as private lessons.

Artist Statement

Growing up in the small town of Raymond I was directed to the pre college academic classes rather than the craft or skill classes. Art was more about reading artists' biographies until I entered college and took formal art classes. The professor's encouragement and my sense of peace and joy while painting led me to ongoing making and studying art.

My interests change and I waver back and forth regarding subject matter and materials. My advanced studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focused on the figure. I still find it fascinating and draw and paint the figure for shows. Most galleries will not accept Nudes, but to me they are the ultimate landscape. My mediums vary. Watercolors were natural while living in Hawaii due to the colors and light. Landscapes in oil are a comfortable fit. But drawing with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel and vine charcoal are like an extension of my arm.

Shoreline remodeler builds freedom for a family during Rampathon©

Crew poses with recipient and her mother

Photos courtesy Irons Brothers Construction

Ramp Captain Joseph Irons, President of Irons Brothers Construction, and his team of employees and skilled volunteers are building their 16th free wheelchair access ramp for a local Echo Lake resident.

Joseph and his team began their work last week by excavating, forming, and pouring a 40-foot linear concrete walkway. On Monday, the team of volunteers returned to build the platform landing, door transition, and railings onto the home and ramp walkway.

This philanthropic project is a part of the Master Builders of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) Rampathon program.

Three Guys Concrete were part of the project
This year’s ramp recipient Laurel has contracted a rare disease that has left her unable to walk. She cannot currently work and has returned home to live with her mother, Mary who is on a fixed retirement income.

They could not afford the cost of building a ramp on their own and are so grateful for this project.

With a wheelchair ramp, Laurel will be able to easily enter and exit her Mother’s home for the many appointments and therapy sessions she needs to fully recover.

The home’s doorway leads to two sets of four steps which are obstacles to enter and exit, as well as being barriers in an emergency.

The Irons Brothers Construction team designed a wheelchair ramp installation that will help this homeowner, her elderly mother, and the visiting nurse services to come and go from the house.

“Since our first Rampathon build in Shoreline, May 2006, we have helped numerous other companies design and build ramps to make this program successful, including being past Chair of the MBA’s Rampathon committee,” says Irons.
"With in-person assistance being negatively impacted by COVID-19 restrictions, we are honored to use our building skills to help others.” Joseph Irons, 2022 President of the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW).

The new walkway goes all the way to the street
The new wheelchair ramp was built from her doorway out to the parking in front of her home. This will create safe access to her front yard, the new concrete walkway, and the car. This project will be constructed out of easy to maintain and eye-pleasing materials.

The ramp site construction crew includes 15 volunteers, including Irons Brothers Construction’s staff, Risk Insurance Services’ staff, Three Guys Concrete, Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel, Dunn Lumber, and their colleagues, friends, and family.

2022 marks the 29th anniversary of the annual Rampathon event. Since 1993, Master Builders members have contributed more than 500 ramps to members of our King and Snohomish County communities.

This year, Irons Brothers Construction, based in Shoreline WA participates in its 18th Rampathon.

Thanks to the Master Builders Association and the generous donors listed below, this ramp was built at no cost to the recipient.

Special recognition to donors for this recipient’s ramp include:
  • Irons Brothers Construction, Inc. for volunteer labor and materials
  • Risk Insurance Services for volunteer labor and nourishment
  • Three Guys Construction for volunteer labor to build the concrete walkway
  • Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel for their concrete donation
  • Dunn Lumber for lumber material donations

King County experts have identified the best opportunities to restore access to the most salmon habitat

A three-year study conducted by King County scientists and engineers has identified the best stream locations to remove barriers that prevent salmon from swimming to high-quality habitat, putting the county in a strong position for new federal infrastructure investments.

The field team of experts inspected more than 3,000 locations where habitat is possibly blocked by county-owned roads and trails.

They ranked more than 700 of the identified barriers and determined that completing 50 restoration projects would restore access to at least half of the habitat that is currently blocked.

The inventory and prioritization will make King County highly competitive for local, state, and federal grants – including the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill – that fund projects to restore access to high-quality habitat, which is critical to the survival of native salmon and southern resident orcas that rely on them as a food source.

“Thanks to outstanding work by our team of leading experts, we know precisely where we can produce the best results for the most salmon habitat as quickly as possible,” said King County Executive Dow Constantine.
“The field team’s solid recommendations – based on their inspection of more than 3,000 potential barriers to upstream habitat – makes our region one of the most shovel ready in the country for new federal infrastructure investments.”

Message from Superintendent Reyes in response to the Texas school tragedy

Message from Superintendent Reyes

Yesterday’s tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, is deeply heartbreaking.

Our hearts go out to the students, teachers, staff, parents, families, and community of Uvalde as they process this incredibly difficult and sad time.

During times like this, children may express or exhibit fear about their safety, so please let your school know if you sense that a student needs support.

Here are some helpful resources for talking with your children about this event or any act of violence:
As a school district, we are committed to making every effort to ensure our students have a learning environment in which they feel safe and secure, and where they can focus on growing every day.

Safety measures in schools across our district include the following:
  • Secured entries are locked other than during high-traffic arrival times
  • School entrances are monitored and entry is controlled by office and administrative staff
  • All schools have the ability to electronically lock down all exterior doors with the push of a button
  • All threats are taken seriously and investigated, with appropriate precautions
  • Safety drills are conducted throughout the year, including lockdown drills
  • To quickly, easily, and anonymously report safety concerns, we have an anonymous safety tip line
In the wake of a tragedy such as this, we are reminded to hold our loved ones close while we care for and support them during this difficult time. Please know, we are focused on ensuring that every Shoreline student has access to a safe and healthy environment in which to learn, grow, and succeed.

Sincerely,
Dr. Susana Reyes
Superintendent
Shoreline School District

Federal Trade Commission launches inquiry into infant formula crisis

The Federal Trade Commission staff has launched an inquiry into the ongoing shortage for infant formula that has caused hardship for countless American families.

The inquiry seeks information about the nature and prevalence of any deceptive, fraudulent, or otherwise unfair business practices aimed at taking advantage of families during this shortage.

It also aims to shed light on the factors that have led to concentration in the infant formula market and the fragility of the supply chains for these crucial products. FTC Chair Lina M. Khan released a statement in conjunction with the public inquiry committing to a series of actions to confront this crisis.

"We have been monitoring and will continue to monitor the ongoing infant formula shortage, which is causing enormous anxiety, fear, and financial burden for American families," said Chair Lina M. Khan in her statement.
"The FTC is launching a public inquiry to identify the factors that contributed to the shortage or hampered our ability to respond to it. Learning from this experience can help determine how we can minimize the risk of similar shortages in the markets for other life-sustaining products."

The Request for Information seeks public input on whether the FTC itself or state or federal agencies may have inadvertently taken steps that contributed to fragile supply chains in the market for these crucial products for many American families. Comments should be submitted to regulations.gov and must be received no later than Friday, June 24, 2022 by 11:59pm ET.
