Goslings at Ronald Bog

Today I received sad news that all three nests at Bitter Lake have failed. The lakewatcher there thinks that the problem is that the groundskeepers trimmed away all the foliage between the path and the lake, giving the geese no cover for their nests.

No lack of green space for goslings at Ronald Bog

Local author publishes children's board book Animal Potluck

Children's board book by local authors Brandi and Mike Konopinski, illustrated by Kelly Kinkaid

The written word is a fascinating thing. It is capable of opening portals to new worlds through old wardrobes and rabbit holes.

Writing can inspire generations of children to follow pioneering footsteps into the unknown like space or the deep sea. For me, a confusing, unusual, and fantastic childhood provided many lonely moments in which stories were my escape.

Reading through Beverly Cleary books, into Boxcar Children, and eventually the immersive worlds of Stephen King and the Harry Potter universe brought me so much joy.

This joy is what inspired me to begin writing.Years of fiddling with stories have led to my first book. It is a collaborative board book written by my wife and I and illustrated by a fantastic local artist.

If you are not familiar with them; board books are the first introduction to the written word that a child receives. Firm and easily carried, these board books are made of stern stuff; capable of being chewed on or rubbed in a plate of baby food.

Our board book is entitled Animal Potluck and features a collection of colorful animal friends who share food and fun, potluck style!

The book practices rhyming, food and animal identification, and MOST importantly the value of sharing. In fact, by the end of the book your young one will be reading along and saying, “Share it!”

If you’re interested in checking out our book it’s available in a few places including online like at our publishing website www.rainydaypublishing.com and in person at two local bookstores; Edmonds Bookshop (111 5th Ave S, Edmonds, WA 98020) and Magnolia’s Bookstore (3206 W McGraw St, Seattle, WA 98199).

Happy Reading!
Mike Konopinski

Black clouds and pink snow

Wednesday, May 11, 2022

Photo copyright Mike Remarcke

By Diane Hettrick

You know the cliché - if you don't like the weather here just wait five minutes. The past few days have really illustrated that.

I drove down SR 104 today. It was raining hard on the west side of the freeway and brilliant sunshine on the east side.

Anyone who has lived here in the convergence zone for any length of time has had the experience of rain in the front yard and sunshine in the back.

Mike Remarcke's photo is from Monday evening. It explained my weather day on Monday. Beautiful golden light intermittently outside my windows and high, solid clouds of slate blue in the treetops.

Pink snow by Phyllis Johnson
Phyllis Johnson shared the photo of the pink snow.

One day the trees were covered with pink blossoms, and the next day the wind was blowing.

The pink stuff used to decorate her crabapple tree.

I heard that we got a month's worth of rain in a week. It didn't seem that bad, although it wasn't our normal drizzle.

I think the heavy rain is washing out the dirt under my sidewalk. One of these days I'll step on the wrong spot and fall to the center of the earth.

Winners announced for the 2022 NWWS Waterworks Unlimited exhibition

Karen Knutson won first prize for her painting, “A Helping Hand”

Making Connections in Art: Winners announced for the 2022 NWWS Waterworks Unlimited Exhibition

Online exhibition through June 30, 2022 at nwws.org

“You can feel the connection of friendship of the two characters,” Mike Hernandez said awarding first place for the Northwest Watercolor Society’s (NWWS) annual membership exhibition, Waterworks Unlimited, to Karen Knutson for her painting, “A Helping Hand.” “It connected to me more than any piece,” he added.

At the online awards reception held April 28, 2022, Hernandez went on to say that he also found it difficult to distill the 362 submissions down to the 60 accepted paintings.

It came down to a feeling of connection. Artwork had to have technical expertise, an unexpected expression, and it had to be honest. Awarding 13 artists with prizes came down to an emotional connection.

Second prize to Liz Walker for "Less Than Approachable"
Second place was awarded to Liz Walker for “Less Than Approachable.”
“What we see in the abstract and the literal, the calm and rhythm, says so much without expressions on the people’s faces,” Hernandez said of Walker’s mixed watermedia artwork.

Janet Barnette was awarded third place for “Seeing Red.”
Hernandez classified the painting as an experience that evoked a response of beauty and balance. It had a familiarity to him, a connection.

The top three members received cash awards of $1,000, $750 and $500 respectively. The other ten award winners received cash and/or merchandise from patrons. All awards totalled almost $7,000.

Janet Barnette was awarded third place for “Seeing Red”

Chair Charlene Burley sincerely thanked all who submitted entries for consideration.

“I found that getting lost in the world of art was a blessed relief in such stressful times,” she said.

President Molly Murrah added, “There is something for everyone to savor, appreciate and connect to.”

To see the online Waterworks Unlimited Exhibition any time you want, on any device and for free, go to www.nwws.org and see what you connect to.

And if you are moved by the watermedia art you see in this show and wish to purchase, contact the NWWS Treasurer at shirleylee136@hotmail.com or 509-293-1104.

In response to the pandemic, the City of Lake Forest Park suspended all in person public meetings in favor of an online format. The silver lining of this effort has been the acknowledgment that all future public meetings should be “hybrid” allowing for in-person and online attendance and participation.

While public meetings were closed to in-person attendance, the Administration engaged outside services to provide a hybrid opportunity in the city council chambers when City Council meetings reopen to in-person attendance.

Beginning with the May 12, 2022 City Council work session at 6:00pm and regular meeting at 7:00pm, the Council Chambers will again be open to in-person attendance. The public may also continue to participate in the meetings remotely, via Zoom.

Edmonds, WA – Olympic Ballet Theatre (OBT) presents a three-act production of Don Quixote, with choreography staged after the production by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky.

This classical comedic ballet follows the adventures of Don Quixote and his mischievous companion Sancho Panza on a heart-warming quest for love, honor, and justice. With an unforgettable score by Ludwig Minkus, colorful costumes, and brand new stage art by award-winning designer John Iacovelli and Seattle artist Ruth Gilmore, this family-friendly production is perfect for audiences of all ages.

“We have been planning to present Don Quixote several years ago, but had to postpone the production because of the pandemic,” said artistic directors Mara Vinson and Oleg Gorboulev.
“It’s exciting to be able to finally see our vision for this ballet come to life and to give our company dancers and Olympic Ballet School students an opportunity to perform so many of these iconic roles.”

Don Quixote from Olympic Ballet Company

As part of the community outreach efforts to introduce the art of ballet and the classic novel about Don Quixote to the public, OBT is taking a display of production materials on tour at local libraries and a bookstore in Edmonds

In the last two months, visitors at the Lynnwood Library, Edmonds Bookshop, and the Edmonds Library have been enjoying a display of sparkling tutus and toreador costumes, fun props, and even a peek inside a miniature stage model complete with a sketch of every backdrop.

“We hope to bring this wonderful story to more families in our community and get kids excited about the performing arts,” said Gorboulev and Vinson.

OBT will also open up its studios to the public to come in and watch performance excerpts by company dancers on Thursday, May 19, as part of its participation in the Edmonds Art Walk.

TICKET INFORMATION

Don Quixote will run three performances at the Edmonds Center for the Arts on May 14 and May 15, 2022. Tickets range from $27 to $48 and can be purchased at https://www.olympicballet.org/tickets or at the box office 425-774-7570.

Principal Fritz added, “Jamila’s background in counseling and her deep understanding of social-emotional learning paired with a history of building strong communities in the schools where she has worked make her a perfect fit for our Einstein community."
This selection was made and shared with the Einstein community in February.
