Heroes' Café Shoreline is open to everyone - Tuesday, April 12, 2022

Friday, April 8, 2022

Like many Veterans' organizations, Heroes' Café Shoreline is a venue for a gathering of Veterans for interaction and camaraderie and to reach out to Veterans in need.

Heroes' Café Shoreline meets the second Tuesday of every month at Seattle Scottish Rite Center, 1207 N 152nd St Shoreline WA 98133. This month's meeting is Tuesday, April 12, 2022.

Heroes' Café starts at 9am with coffee and pastries, followed by a Veterans program and lunch ending at 1pm. There is no cost to participate.

Unique among Veterans organizations is that there is nothing to join, you just show up. Heroes' Café Shoreline is open to Veterans, family, friends and the public.

April program

The Shoreline Veterans Association and Heroes' Café Shoreline is proud to host author and Gold Star Wife, Michelle Black for a presentation of her book entitled Sacrifice

Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 9:00am.

Her husband, Bryan, was an integral part of the Green Beret team operating in Niger, North Africa under the US Command of AFRICOM. In early 2017, the team was ambushed by ISIS resulting in the tragic death of Bryan and three other team members.

Reports of the event provided by US AFRICOM differed from the reports Michelle learned from the surviving Green Beret team members. The Command placed blame for failings of the mission on the team leader and the team.

“I’ve heard it said that you marry your equal; if that’s true, I’m a beast. A force to be reckoned with. I will do Bryan proud,” Michelle Black.

This sparked an investigation by Michelle resulting in the writing of her book, Sacrifice. Michelle will bring books for sale before and after her presentation.

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour is back in 2022

Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park is back in 2022

All you know and love about the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour will be back in 2022. During the Covid ‘drought’ and the seasonal winter months, gardeners and garden lovers have had to content themselves with snippets of garden humor to keep cheerful. Not anymore. One circulating in Facebook feeds is now celebrating the return to the loved customs of the past.

You know that tingly feeling you get when you enter a plant store? It’s the common sense leaving your body.

It is with enormous pleasure that we announce the opportunity for you to experience the common sense leaving your body. Purchase a ticket and it will happen June 18, 2022 when, in keeping with tradition of holding the event on Father’s Day weekend, the Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Tour will take place.

Some time at the Plant and Garden Art Market held at the Lake Forest Town Center will begin the tingly feeling. Those ‘hard to finds,’ ‘something whimsical,’ or even a replacement for a plant now composting will be there.

You can also take a chance in the raffle ticket and browse the garden art finds. Then it is off to go looking for ideas in other peoples’ gardens that will work in your own. The ones that won’t, will enchant anyway.

Six gardens are on the tour. Each is different from the others, and all are labors of love by the homeowners who developed them. They will work their magic as gardens do, and so will the artists and musicians who grace them. Visitors may take their time in happy contemplation.

On top of all those make-you-feel-good-things is the knowledge that the ticket, plant and art sale proceeds go to good causes. In part, the funds provide public art for the community. Check out one such work: Five by Five by local artist, Rodger Squirrell on the corner of Bothell Way and Ballinger Way. In its soft, rippling fashion, the sculpture soothes out the harsh lines of a shopping center and roads and yours in the process.

The tour also supports nonprofits that help give Lake Forest Park its heartbeat. Proceeds go toward the four local organizations that collaborate to put on the Tour: Third Place Commons, the Lake Forest Park Stewardship Foundation, ShoreLake Arts and the Lake Forest Park Garden Club. With support the groups can put on a tour again next year.

We look forward to welcoming you to the tingly world of Lake Forest Park Gardens.

Tour Day/ Hours: June 18, 2022. 9:00am – 3.00pm
Purchase Tickets: Pre-Tickets available May 1 online at EventBrite.com
In Person: Wild Birds in LFP Town Center and Sky Nursery in Shoreline
Advance Purchase: $15.00
Day of Ticket Sales at the Door: $20.00

Lien Titus has battled the pandemic and cancer to keep providing food to neighbors in need.

When Titus was diagnosed with cancer last year, doctor's orders put the free pantry on pause.

"Because I was starting up the chemo and radiation," she explained.

She's still fighting the effects of the disease, but it can't keep her away from her beloved pantry.

"I can't sit still," she said.

Suspect arrested in February 2020 homicide of 7-11 store clerk; Detectives also recommend 1st Degree Murder charge for a second suspect

Nagendiram Kandasamy was murdered while
working at the 7-11 on SR 99 in Edmonds
(Edmonds, WA) Edmonds Police Detectives have booked a twenty-six-year-old woman from Auburn into the Snohomish County Jail for the February 21, 2020, homicide of Nagendiram Kandasamy.

Mr. Kandasamy was working his shift at an Edmonds 7-11 store on Highway 99, six blocks north of Shoreline, when he was shot and killed shortly after an armed assailant burst into the location and jumped onto the counter.

The arrested female had been previously taken into custody during a March 15, 2020, search warrant operation in Enumclaw. Yesterday's arrest culminated in the female being booked for 1st -Degree Murder and Attempted 1st -Degree Robbery.

Additionally, detectives will recommend charges of 1st -Degree Murder, Attempted 1st -Degree Robbery, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm for a 25-year-old male from Enumclaw who is currently in custody on unrelated charges at the Pierce County Jail. This male had also been taken into custody during the March 2020 operation.

Detectives worked closely with the Snohomish County Prosecutor's Office as they navigated through their investigation. The complex case has involved countless hours of work, including search warrants and the forensic analysis of evidence.

While the COVID pandemic crisis provided some limitations or delays, the case remained the highest of priorities for the Edmonds Police Department. In doing so, they solicited the assistance of the Snohomish County Violent Offenders Task Force, who worked extensively to locate the suspect.

However, on April 6, 2022, the female suspect was arrested by Auburn Police, who located and arrested her during a traffic stop.

Statement from Chief Michelle Bennett: "The cowardly act that took the life of Mr. Kandasamy left a profound impact on his family and our community.
"From its first moments, the women and men of Edmonds PD worked tirelessly towards putting this case together and taking a violent suspect off the street. While our detectives led the investigation, they had assistance from several law enforcement partners. This was a total team effort.
"We will continue working with the prosecutor's office to support their prosecution of the dangerous suspects. These arrests and charges are not a conclusion, but they bring us closer to providing justice for the Kandasamy family."

If the public has any information on this case, please contact: Policetips@edmondswa.gov or Tip Line 425-771-0212.

Update: the suspect has been released from jail for now, according to an article in MLTNews.com

"The prosecutor’s office didn’t have enough time to prepare the charging documents, so they had to let her go – for now. Edmonds police say they are confident they have a case ready for court. Now, detectives and prosecutors have a little more time to make sure they can prove their case and provide answers to two years of pain."

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation awards March grants

It has been another busy and fulfilling month for the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF). In addition to our annual spring fundraising campaign, which concluded on March 31, 2022 the board approved three more grants in the month of March.

Echo Lake Elementary photo by Steven H. Robinson

A grant submitted by the LAP teacher at Echo Lake Elementary has afforded seventy-five students in both the kindergartener and the Special Education program at Echo Lake Elementary to benefit from the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum.

This curriculum is an invaluable tool in helping struggling and early readers establish stronger phonemic awareness. A foundational understanding of phonemic awareness directly impacts reading, writing, spelling and speech.

Highland Terrace Elementary photo by Frank Kleyn

Thanks to a grant submitted by the Family Advocate at Highland Terrace Elementary, Spanish speaking Hispanic and Latino families will meet several times from now until the end of the school year, to discuss how to best support their student’s education, to share experiences and to build a stronger community.

These meetings will be sponsored in-part by the SPSF. These gatherings provide a means of inclusion for diverse families and a way to participate in the decision-making process at Highland Terrace.

Shorewood High School courtesy Shoreline Schools

Over 700 students at Shorecrest and Shorewood High School as well as Kellogg and Einstein Middle School, will have access to a more diverse and inclusive set of award-winning books for book clubs, thanks to a recent grant submitted from the librarian at Shorewood High School.

Book clubs within our schools have an enormous impact on the culture of reading and promote a community of readers with books that represent and reflect our diverse student population.

A huge thank you to the teachers who wrote and submitted these grants and to the generous donors of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.

Your donations allow us to fulfill our mission of funding opportunities for educational success for all students within the Shoreline district. If you would like to donate to the SPSF, please visit our website at shorelinefoundation.org

If you are interested in joining the Foundation and helping us fulfill our mission, please email Cindy Pridemore at cindy.pridemore@shorelineschools.org

Greg Butler, BLA, ATA—Designer, educator, and owner Design of the Times

Everybody loves hummers. They’ve got the dance moves of those overly choreographed gangs from West Side Story and sport more bling than a limo full of bar-hopping drag queens.

Greg has been educating and entertaining gardeners of all levels of interest as a teacher, lecturer, writer, and garden coach for over two decades.

As owner of the design and consulting firm Design of the Times, he puts an emphasis on helping his public and private clients create beautiful, functional, and easy-care gardens and landscapes that don’t depend on pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or any other kind of synthetic tom-foolery for success.

Taking advantage of our mild maritime climate makes it possible to turn your garden into a year-round hummingbird feeder just by choosing the right plants. You’ll also get tips on life cycles, behavior, enhancing habitat, and more.

Accessorize your garden with tiny flying jewelry.

Town and Country Markets partners with PacWesty to launch zero emissions grocery delivery service to customers

Town and Country Market with all-electric delivery van

SEATTLE, WASH. -- April 5, 2022 -- Town and Country Markets (formerly Central Market in Shoreline) announced today that it has partnered with PacWesty to offer customers an all-electric grocery delivery service. Customers simply place their orders online and select the home delivery option at https://townandcountrymarkets.com/ to receive delivery to their doorstep.

Among the first companies in Washington State to use a fleet of battery-electric delivery vans, Town and Country and PacWesty began their relationship in 2020. PacWesty, known as a local adventure travel company, pivoted during the pandemic to support the growing need of at-home delivery of products and services. Town and Country and PacWesty came together to accomplish Town and Country’s mission to get people the food they love, under all circumstances.

“As we considered entering our communities and neighborhoods, we didn’t want to show up with noise and added pollution,” said Ryan Ritter, senior director of technology and products, Town and Country Markets.
“PacWesty provided the perfect zero-emissions vehicle options, enabling us to responsibly deliver groceries to our customers and stay true to our sustainable values.”

The service originated on Bainbridge Island and has been expanded to include Town and Country Markets service areas for its Ballard, Shoreline, Poulsbo, and Mill Creek stores. The delivery vans were originally gas powered but were converted by PacWesty to all-electric, embracing the concept of upcycling.

Additionally, the vans with refrigeration are designed to utilize the cooling system for the batteries to also cool the cargo areas, eliminating the need for a fuel-driven refrigeration.

Since the start of this service, approximately 150,000 bags of groceries have been delivered. And by utilizing electric vans, approximately 49 metric tons of CO2 emission have been eliminated.

The partnership expansion coincides with Town and Country Markets brand unification, bringing its Central Markets and Ballard Market under the Town and Country brand, and refreshing store interiors to meet new consumer demand.

Town and Country Markets intends to use zero-emissions electric vehicles for grocery deliveries for all its stores and is investing in additional EV high-speed charging stations at each store location for its delivery vans and consumers before the end of the year.

Town and Country Markets recently launched a new website with expanded digital content for an integrated, interactive and enhanced online shopping experience, enabling online ordering with personal shoppers and scheduled delivery.

Gov. Inslee: Wednesday marked the 80th anniversary of the Japanese American exclusion on Bainbridge Island

Inslee and First Spouse Trudi Inslee photographed with Natalie Hayashida Ong, the youngest survivor of the internment camps. Her mother, Fumiko Hayashida, was famously photographed while waiting to board the ferry to the camp. The iconic photo is visible on the governor's phone.

Hundreds of community members gathered Wednesday, March 30, 2022 at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial for a commemoration ceremony to honor survivors and educate the community about the 276 Japanese residents who were forced from their homes and exiled from Bainbridge Island 80 years ago.

The U.S. government forcibly removed Japanese Americans from their homes and into internment camps during World War II.

"The historical significance of this national failure still resonates today,” Inslee said.
“After 80 years of healing, we must stay committed to the advancement of anti-racism, justice and democracy for all.
"In this way, we transform the injustices of the past, into reasons to do good today, for a better future.”

Gov. Inslee: That's a wrap: 303 bills delivered and done as legislative session ends in Olympia

Bill signing with Gov Inslee
Legislators approved 303 bills during the 60-day session that ended March 10, 2022. The action then turns to the governor's office where he has 20 days to sign or veto legislation. This week he wrapped up signing several dozen bills, including several at signing events with communities and legislators.

Some bills from the Legislature are intended for fun. On Monday, Inslee signed a bill sponsored by Rep. John Lovick establishing pickleball as the state’s official sport. Inslee and Lovick were joined by dozens of pickleball enthusiasts on Bainbridge Island where the sport was invented in 1965.

Most bills, however, bills tackle serious and urgent issues, such as the bipartisan bill to deter theft of catalytic converters. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Cindy Ryu. Inslee also signed legislation requested by Attorney General Bob Ferguson and sponsored by Rep. Debra Lekanoff to create the nation’s first alert system to help locate missing Indigenous people.

Among the dozens of other bills the governor signed this week:
  • A bill sponsored by Rep. Liz Berry and promoted by firefighters that makes Washington the first state to phase out toxic PFAS “forever chemicals” in many common products by 2025.
  • An anti-hazing bill known as the “Sam’s Law” sponsored by Rep. Mari Leavitt that would require colleges and universities to do more to prevent and report incidents of hazing.
  • Updated 2021-2023 capital and operating budgets that fund more shelters and services for people experiencing homelessness, help schools hire more nurses, counselors and psychologists, and continue expanding behavioral health services across the state and for youth.

AG: Watch out for charity scams seeking to profit from the crisis in Ukraine

CONSUMER ALERT: Watch out for charity scams seeking to profit from the crisis in Ukraine.

Do your research before donating, report suspicious behavior — scammers may take advantage of influx of donations amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

OLYMPIA — Attorney General Bob Ferguson is warning Washingtonians to be on the lookout for scammers targeting donations to aid Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees amid Russia’s ongoing invasion. Ferguson is asking Washingtonians to report suspicious solicitations to his office.

“During this tragic humanitarian crisis, many of us are looking for ways to help,” Ferguson said. “Unfortunately, scammers may prey on Washingtonians’ good will. My office is on the lookout for charity scams. If you see any suspicious or fraudulent solicitations, file a complaint with my office.”

You can protect yourself from scams by doing the following:
  • Research the charity before giving. Ensure the charity is registered with the Washington Secretary of State at www.sos.wa.gov/charities. If the charity is registered, you can review a summary of its financial records and tax status. You can also check the charity’s rating on Charity Navigator at www.charitynavigator.org or Guidestar Nonprofit Directory at www.guidestar.org.
  • Don’t give in to high-pressure tactics. If is someone is demanding immediate payment or sensitive personal information, it’s likely a scam.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the Attorney General’s Office. If you suspect a charitable solicitation might be a scam, report it to the Attorney General’s Office. To file a complaint about a charity or commercial fundraiser, visit the Attorney General’s website at www.atg.wa.gov/file-complaint. If you receive a suspicious robocall asking for a donation, file a robocall complaint at https://www.atg.wa.gov/robocall-and-telemarketing-scams.

Dept of Health: Effective anti-COVID drug available in Washington for eligible patients

OLYMPIA – Thousands of doses of a potentially life-saving COVID-19 drug are available in the state of Washington, and could potentially benefit those at highest risk for hospitalization and death from COVID-19.

Evusheld (tixagevimab co-packaged with cilgavimab) is a monoclonal antibody treatment that can provide protection against COVID-19. Provided via injection, it can be given to adults and children 12 years and older before infection with COVID-19.

At present, those eligible to receive Evusheld include people who are moderately to severely immunocompromised or have had a severe allergic reaction to a COVID-19 vaccine.

Individuals interested in this treatment should talk to their health care provider to determine if they are eligible for Evusheld. If they are, they can work with their providers to find a facility where they can receive the injection.

“Statewide, our cases and hospitalizations are moving in the right direction, but there are still deaths from COVID-19 every day, and a rise in cases caused by new variants is always a possibility,” said Tao Sheng Kwan-Gett, MD, MPH, Chief Science Officer.
“We want to make sure patients who are immunocompromised know about treatments like Evusheld. It could be a game-changer for those who need extra protection.”

People at high risk for severe disease from COVID-19 who are not eligible for Evusheld should ask their health care provider about other antiviral and monoclonal antibody treatments for COVID-19 that are available by prescription only and must be given within the first few days of COVID-19 symptoms to be effective.

Evusheld was first released for use in December 2021 and was initially very difficult to access due to limited supply. Additional information on Evusheld for patients, parents and caregivers can be found here

More information on COVID-19 therapeutics can also be found at Washington State Department of Health’s website here, and information for health care providers including a listing of sites where COVID-19 therapeutics are allocated can be found here.
