The Local 104 is at Ballinger Way and 35th NE, 18498 Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

One Question, One Point, One Action

One Question, One Point, One Action - March 2022

By Sally Yamasaki

-- a monthly article where a Lake Forest Park resident asks LFP Councilmember Tracy Furutani one question, and councilmember Tracy will answer the question and then highlight one point from a recent council meeting and one action we as a community can take.

If you have a question you would like to ask Tracy, email your question here: resident.of.lfp@gmail.com

Armand's cedar tree showing a LOT of brown…
result of heat and drought 2021
This month avid LFP gardener Armand Micheline has a question for Tracy.

Armand:

Hi Tracy,

Having worked with you on your campaign for City Council I became aware of your great interest in climate change and how it affects Lake Forest Park.

As a gardener of 40 plus years I have seen a great deal of change in our weather patterns and its effect on our landscapes. Last summer, the heat dome causing temperatures climbing to 108+ degrees, was brutal on me as well as on my garden!

Though I've heard your climate talks and heard you on the campaign trail, I'd like to know more about what is happening now in LFP regarding climate issues. Is this heat dome really a “once in a millennium” occurrence?

What other climate shifts might we see here in LFP?

Home weather station. On June 28, 2021- the left number is the outdoor temperature and the right number is the indoor temperature. Photo by Tracy Furutani

Tracy:

I hear you, Armand! I lost a few rhodies in my backyard last summer myself - I'd watered and watered them, but that didn't keep the leaves themselves from burning. I've never seen that.

And that's a harbinger for future summers; I'm afraid that the "once in a millennium" heat dome isn't going to be all that rare. According to Crosscut, University of Washington "researchers have learned that short bursts of high temperatures can pose a greater threat to plants and animals than long-term warming, and may even increase the risk of extinction." Couple that with more extreme storms in the winter, and you see the scope of the problem.

One Point:

I am grateful that we in LFP had such interest in forming the Climate Action Committee, and that nine members of our community volunteered to come up with a plan to guide how city operations (like the city's vehicle fleet) can cut down on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG - you will see this abbreviation a lot in the next decade).

Because "climate despair" - the feeling that individuals tackling the changing climate is hopeless - is a real feeling, the Committee will also include what LFP residents can do not only to cut their own GHG emissions, but also to adapt to our hotter summers and our more extreme storms, which may include what plants you might consider for your landscaping in these times.

One Action:

The one action you can take is to participate in the outreach activities this Committee will put together. Sure, we have nine (or ten, once we have the student member in place) great minds working on the plan, but there's a lot of things to think about and bring to the Committee's attention.

Our neighbors the city of Seattle and the city of Shoreline both have Climate Action Plans that have been around for the better part of a decade. The Wednesday night Climate Conversations that Shoreline is holding are especially relevant. Sure, they're not us, but that doesn't mean that some of their ideas wouldn't work here.

So, I encourage LFP residents to take a look at these plans and join in on the Climate Conversations to see what makes sense for our community. And keep an eye out for LFP’s newly formed Climate Committee's outreach efforts, starting sometime in spring!

NOTE: In this interview, Tracy is speaking on behalf of himself, not on behalf of the LFP City Council or the city of LFP.

Next Virtual Regular-Business LFP City Council meeting: Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 7pm

Follow-up: Driver who died in Mountlake Terrace crash identified; police still searching for pickup driver who lost the mattress on I-5

According to reporting in the MLTNews.com, after the State Patrol investigation, 20 year old Yohana M. Ayele of Edmonds was identified as the driver who died at the scene after swerving to miss a mattress in the road.

She was driving her Nissan sedan northbound on Interstate 5 at 6:38am near 220th St SW when she struck the mattress, which had fallen off a truck just a few minutes earlier.

After hitting the mattress, her vehicle swerved in front of a semi-truck, driven by a 33-year-old Surrey, British Columbia, man. The semi struck the Nissan on the driver’s side door. The semi came to rest in the HOV lane on the barrier. The Nissan was reported to have come to rest in the freeway’s grass median.

The state patrol is searching for the pickup truck that lost the mattress and left the scene. It is described as a small, older, dark-colored pickup with wood-sided bed racks carrying miscellaneous household items.

Anyone with any information about the truck or its occupants is asked to contact Washington State Patrol Detective Dan Komnick at 360-654-1204.

6th Annual Shoreline Short Short Film Festival ends on a high note

ShoreLake Arts and the Shoreline Film Office presented their annual celebration of Washington-made short films at the Shoreline Community College Theater on Saturday, March 5, 2022. More than 200 people turned out to celebrate local film in ShoreLake Arts’ first indoor event since November, 2019.

Jurors Tony Doupé (SCC Professor/SAG Actor), Vivian Hua (Northwest Film Forum Executive Director), Starla Sheen (Filmmaker, Edelman Communication Firm), Zubi Mohammed (Magnussen Media Group: Seattle and Los Angeles), Kira Sipler (screenwriter, producer, director, and assistant director), Deb Pralle (stage, screen, tv, radio actor and Group Content Director) selected 14 films made by Washington State filmmakers, all of which were made during the COVID-19 era.

Jeff Schick, Best Picture, and Sasquatch award winner, with event organizer Kevin Sheen

The Calling by Jeff Schick, a Seattle-based writer, director and filmmaker, won best picture. Schick began directing films in 2012, ultimately creating a film production company, Audio Video Room, where he currently serves as a creative director. This is the second SSSFF win for Schick, who won the People’s Choice award in 2020.

Aiwei Wu and Ray Cao (center) won the 2022 People’s Choice Award
A Weekend on Foxes Island directed by Aiwei Wu and Ray Cao won the 2022 People’s Choice Award. Aiwei Wu began making films during college. Wu’s first film won the jury award at the University of Michigan Campus MovieFest in 2019, kick-starting her filmmaking career.

After moving to Seattle, Wu co-founded the Avocado Highway Production with Ray Cao. Ray creates visual effects, designs graphics and props for live-action shorts and animations as well as serving as a scriptwriter.

Both the Best Film and People Choice awards come with a $1000 cash prize and the Sasquatch award. The Shoreline Short Short Film Festival supports emerging and developing filmmakers in Washington State and fosters appreciation of experimental and short filmmaking in our region.

Festival Director Kevin Sheen said, “This was a very special event for our organization, the communities we serve, and all of the participating filmmakers. It’s hard to believe, but this was our first indoor event in over two years.
"I’m very proud of the ShoreLake Arts staff for making this year the best one yet. And to the filmmakers, thank you all so much for continuing to produce amazing work and stories. It was such a fun group of films and people this year. Thank you!”

Nordstrom volunteers help to install 67 Pacific Northwest saplings in Shoreview Park

Nordstrom volunteers at Shoreview Park

Volunteers from Nordstrom recently participated in a native conifer restoration event hosted at Shoreview Park.

At the March 5, 2022 event, the group worked to install 67 Pacific Northwest saplings (Douglas fir and grand fir) into the turf slope adjacent to the park’s entrance.

These plants were given to the City through Forterra’s Evergreen Carbon Capture program. In turn the City pledged to keep them viable and undisturbed for a century (each tree is estimated to sequester 13.9 tons of carbon per 100 years).

Forterra plans to monitor survival rates at this site, as well as at future planting sites (James Keough Park and Edwin Pratt Memorial Park) that were nominated in the program application to receive native conifers.

In addition to the carbon projected to be sequestered by these trees, they will also eventually provide afternoon shade to the adjacent sports courts, and as the surrounding turf is shaded out by the expanding canopy there is great potential to increase biodiversity by installing native sub-canopy and ground cover species.

Shoreview Park is between Innis Arden Way and Carlyle-Hall Road  in west Shoreline.

Inquests into deaths caused by law enforcement to resume in King County

Dow Constantine, King County Executive
After a delay of more than four years from lawsuits that led to an eventual Washington Supreme Court decision and new executive order by Executive Dow Constantine, inquests into deaths caused by law enforcement officers will resume this week in King County.

In 2018, Executive Dow Constantine paused inquests to address concerns of fairness and transparency and pushed forward with a new process built on stakeholder and community input.

When local jurisdictions challenged the new process in court, the new program was delayed until the Washington Supreme Court reaffirmed the Executive’s order in July 2021.

With the legal challenges concluded, King County is now set to resume the inquests to provide clarity, accountability, and closure to the public and to the families of those killed by law enforcement.

"The road has been long, but I am thankful we can begin conducting inquests and providing the public with answers,” said Executive Constantine.
“The pandemic and legal challenges aside, building a process that the public can have faith in has been a difficult but necessary task, and I hope it can provide closure in these difficult and heartbreaking cases.”

Currently, there are 7 inquests called. Two inquests are expected to move forward in the next several months. Others will soon follow. Dozens of cases are still under review by the Prosecuting Attorney's Office for referral to the Executive for inquest proceedings to be ordered.

Seattle Times article features two Lake Forest Park eateries

The Local 104 photo by Steven H. Robinson

A recent article in The Seattle Times by Times food writer Jackie Varriano features The Local 104 on Ballinger Way in Lake Forest Park, as well as Briley's BBQ and Grill on Bothell Way.

The menu is centered on neo-Neapolitan-style pizza, which differs from Neapolitan in a few ways. First, a neo-Neapolitan usually adds oil and sugar in the dough in addition to flour, water, yeast and salt. Vujovich uses Field 41 Bale Breaker beer as the water and sugar components. It’s also baked at a lower temperature, which creates a slightly different crust structure.

Painting Away the Trauma spotlights art created by veterans through art therapy - Wednesday at Shoreline Community College

Free, one-day event to feature paintings, sculptures and metalwork designs

Shoreline, WA – Artwork created Puget Sound area veterans engaged in art therapy will be spotlighted at "Painting Away the Trauma" exhibition presented by WA AmeriCorps Vet Corps and Shoreline Community College this Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

Free and open to the public, the event is hosted by Shoreline Community College’s Veteran and Military Student Services (VMSS) and will be held at the college’s Pagoda Union Building (PUB, Building 9000) from 10am to 6:30pm.

The event will feature the talents of veterans showcasing their paintings, sculptures and metalwork. Those attending the exhibition will have an opportunity to speak directly with veterans about the relationship between art therapy, mental health care and post-traumatic healing.

“Recent combat veterans returning home from their time in active duty, including conflicts in the Middle East, have found art therapy helps them overcome their traumas,” said Morgan Davis, Shoreline CC Vet Corps Navigator. “Art therapy provides pathways for many veterans to express themselves through an artistic process.”

In addition to the public Shoreline CC students from multiple study disciplines: psychology, fine arts, photography, visual and foundation arts and more, will be on hand to apply their unique critical perspectives to the exhibition merging art, history and lived experiences.

Shoreline Community College, www.shoreline.edu, is located at 16101 Greenwood Ave N., Shoreline, WA 98133.

About "Painting Away the Trauma": The Shoreline CC Veterans Art Exhibit

"Painting Away the Trauma" is a visual history project that will result in a collection of art works (painting, sculptures, ironworks) detailing the experiences of veterans while preserving the value of art therapy.   Veterans often return home with acute psychological or medical conditions and art therapy can be an effective form of treatment in concert with other therapies, or through individual or group psychology.

Shoreline Community College’s goal is to provide a space where veterans can share their artistic talents and experiences. The exhibit will spotlight their work while raising awareness of the benefits of art therapy and its ability to heal pain and trauma.
