We Speak poetry festival in Edmonds focuses on "Connection"

Edmonds Center for the Arts (ECA) presents the 2nd annual WE SPEAK Festival - a celebration of spoken word poetry integrating critically acclaimed artists alongside talented local youth.

As a hybrid in-person/virtual event in 2022, the festival features Steve Connell in collaboration with flexing pioneer Drew Dollaz and violinist Daniel Bernard Romain, Ivan Coyote, Kealoha and Seattle poet Chelsey Richardson with jazz trumpeter Owuor Aruna.

This year's WE SPEAK Festival centers on the theme of "Connection". After the past two years, how do we connect - and heal - as a community?

Where do we see love and resilience, and how do we move forward after trauma?

Through performance, WE SPEAK artists may address topics including (but not limited to) the global health crisis, Black Lives Matter and the racial justice movement and experiences of disability, Indigenous and LGBTQ communities. Their voices call for action, understand and, ultimately, hope.

Please note that as a hybrid event, non-local artists will appear via video submission, while local artist Chelsey Richardson ft. Owuor Arunga and student finalists from our Youth Poetry Slam Competition will perform live on the ECA stage.

Warning: Student and professional artist submissions to the WE SPEAK Festival may contain adult or explicit language.

Funeral procession for Seattle Fire Lieutenant on I-5 Thursday morning

Funeral procession heads north on I-5 at 145th

Northbound I-5 was closed for 20 minutes Thursday morning as the funeral procession for Seattle Fire Lieutenant Luis Batayola traveled from Seattle to Mountlake Terrace, where services were held.

Today we remembered and honored Lt. Luis Batayola with a Line of Duty Death funeral service, after he passed from a work-related illness (cancer) in November 2021.

Shoreline Fire lined the 145th overpass

Freeway overassesses were lined with fire vehicles and firefighters, who saluted as the procession went by.

We thank our partner agencies at the Shoreline Fire Department, Seattle Police Department and other police agencies for helping us to honor our beloved member along the procession route.

He was well known for his time serving on the department’s HazMat team, and later spent his final assignment at Engine 38.

Seattle Firefighters Pipes and Drums lead the procession under the arch.

He was with Seattle Fire for 37 years, where he served residents of Seattle first as a firefighter and then as a lieutenant.

As the procession arrived at the Nile Country Club, it was greeted by fire officers.

As If Theatre Company reopens in Kenmore with funny and poignant comedy THE CAKE

As If Theatre Company (AITC) is reopening its doors at the Kenmore Community Club with the play The Cake.

Originally scheduled for March 2020, this touching comedy about baking, beliefs, and when to stop following the recipe will finally have its Washington premiere March 3-20, 2022.

The Cake by Bekah Brunstetter (NBC’s This is Us, Starz’s American Gods and founding member of The Kilroys) tells the story of Della in her legendary North Carolina bakery, where life is sweet as she prepares to be a contestant on her favorite television baking competition.

When her best-friend’s daughter comes home from New York City to ask her to make a cake for her upcoming wedding to a woman, Della is forced to re-examine her deeply held beliefs, as questions of morals, judgment and family swirl around them all.

Directed by Cindy Giese French and stage managed by Stacey Hansen, the cast of four includes Amy Gentry, Stephanie Spohrer, Roz Cornejo, and Patrick Hogan, with a creative team of Sarah Kessler (set design), Molly Hall (costume design), Gwyn Skone (lighting design), and William French (sound design).

“I connected with this play the first time I read it.” says French. “Bekah Brunstetter has crafted a beautiful, funny story that cracks open the door, just a bit, to different people’s perspectives.
"Not only does this play have tremendous heart, it’s also very funny. And after all we’ve been through collectively these past 2 years, we desperately need to be able to laugh together.”

King county assessor: Tax transparency tool

King county Assessor John Wilson
King County Assessor John Wilson today released his February 2022 special election Taxpayer Transparency Tool, a website which provides each King County taxpayer an individualized accounting of where their property tax dollars go, and the estimated cost of any proposed property tax measure to be voted on.

Below are the property tax measures on the ballot for Shoreline. Lake Forest Park has only the school levies.

Other King county school districts with levies are Bellevue, Enumclaw, Federal Way, Fife, Kent, Lake Washington, Mercer Island, Northshore, Renton, Riverview, Seattle, Snoqualmie Valley, and Vashon. Each district votes only on their own levies.

City: Shoreline
  • Prop 1: Parks and Rec Bonds

School District: Shoreline
  • Prop 1: Replacement for educational programs and operations levy
  • Prop 2: Replacement of expiring capital levy for technology improvements and support

“Taxpayers have a right to know where their money is going, and what each proposed property tax levy will cost them,” said Wilson.

The tool can be found at http://localscape.spatialest.com/#kingcountyassessor/Tax. There is a link to the tool on left side menu of the Assessor’s web page https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/assessor.aspx

The Transparency Tool only shows the impact of property tax measures. Other ballot measures, including sales tax measures or benefit charges, are not included.

The Tax Transparency Tool was introduced by Assessor Wilson and first used during the April special election in 2018.

The Tax Transparency Tool was developed for the King County Assessor by Spatialest Inc, a unique enterprise software company focusing on Location, Value and Technology. The company also created “Localscape” for the King County Assessor in 2014, a map-based visualization tool that aggregates data to present information. Correction: Not a tightrope but a slack line

When I published this photo yesterday, I called it a tight rope. Well, it is obviously anything but tight, as  reader Victor Eskenazi pointed out to me.

"That is a "slack rope" or "slack line" - not a "tight rope"

"While various websites may get into the use of different materials, or the use of a long balancing pole,  the one obvious difference is - the slack line is not at all stable!  Hence it is much easier to put up in a park between 2 trees.

"The "Tight rope" has a lot of tension so that there is very little sway.

"It is a whole lot more difficult to walk a "slack line"!"

Thank you Victor!

UW Med: Get to know rapid tests before they arrive in the mail

Geoff Baird, MD, PhD - UW Med
On Tuesday, January 18, 2022, the federal government activated a webpage where Americans can order free at-home COVID-19 tests.

The program promises to send four rapid antigen tests to any U.S. household starting later this month.

With heavy demand stretching most testing resources thin, UW Medicine pathologist Dr. Geoff Baird says rapid antigen tests are a good go-to if you are feeling sick with symptoms of COVID-19.

“The clinical performance of an antigen rapid test is good enough such that you will get a pretty good result, a pretty reliable result,” said Baird, who is the chair of laboratory medicine and pathology at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

“I think it is a great thing for someone to have either to buy at the drugstore or to have a stash of these things at home, if they have them to access – if they get the sniffles, or a fever, or a cough, or short of breath – to get a really quick idea of what this could be,” Baird said.

More closures for the Montlake Bridge

The Montlake Bridge photo courtesy WSDOT

Rehabilitation of the
 State Route 513

Montlake Bridge is nearly complete, but contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation require two more weekend closures as part of the project.

The bridge will close to all vehicle traffic from 10pm Friday, January 21, 2022 to 5am Monday, Jan. 24. Access for pedestrians and boat traffic in the Montlake Cut will be affected:

  • The bridge sidewalks will be closed for the weekend. A shuttle service will transport pedestrians and bicyclists from one side of the bridge to the other using a detour route. The shuttle stop on the north end will be near the bus stop on eastbound Northeast Pacific Street just west of Montlake Boulevard. The stop on the southern end will be on southbound Montlake Boulevard just south of Shelby Street.
  • Boats will be able to access the Montlake Cut below the bridge using single-leaf openings. Double-leaf openings require 24-hour notice to the bridge operator: (206) 720-3048.

Over the summer and during a series of closures this fall, Hamilton Construction Co. crews replaced the bridge's metal deck, added new support beams and refurbished mechanical components. The bridge now needs to be rebalanced to account for the weight of the new deck and mechanical parts.

Crews will return to the bridge in the spring to repave the bridge approaches. The pavement on each end was removed and repaved with fresh asphalt over the summer, but the work did not meet WSDOT standards. Removing the existing asphalt and repaving will keep the bridge approaches from cracking or forming potholes prematurely.

Department of Justice awards Shoreline $500,000 grant for RADAR program

The Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance has awarded the City of Shoreline, in partnership with Center for Human Services and the North Sound RADAR Navigator Program, a Connect and Protect: Law Enforcement Behavioral Health Responses Grant in the amount of $500,000 over three project years.

RADAR: Bridging the Gap Between Law Enforcement and Behavioral Health

Increasingly the police have become the “safety net beyond the safety net” for people in behavioral health crisis.

In our community, the RADAR Navigator team seeks to meet people in that moment of crisis by embedding social workers with the police departments of Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell and Kirkland.

We have seen the tremendous impact a social worker can have on a crisis situation, however we are often challenged to quickly and efficiently link people in to treatment at the critical moment when they are willing to accept help.

In the space between a crisis or law enforcement contact, and an available appointment with a provider, many people fall through the cracks- especially those living homeless.

The RADAR Project will augment the capacity of the North Sound RADAR Navigator Program and the Center for Human services to effectively bridge that gap, by creating a dedicated pathway for people in behavioral health crisis to gain access to the mental health and substance use treatment system.

This funding will create a dedicated pathway to services by supporting a “Treatment Navigator” role at the Center for Human Services for people at this stage of their journey.

RADAR Navigators will be able to accompany someone directly to an initial appointment with the system of care at Center for Human Services, a committed, culturally competent provider with an excellent reputation with community members because they provide so many corollary services such as family support and basic needs.

The Center for Human Services Treatment Navigator will build rapport, engage people and conduct the initial assessments necessary to engage in services, improving our ability to connect people to long-term supports.

We are grateful to the Department of Justice for supporting this project, which will target a critical weakness in the continuum of care. This work will help reduce criminal legal system utilization by people in crisis and help community members in crisis move toward more stable lives.

In person Staged reading from Driftwood Players - free but tickets required

Driftwood Players presents a Staged Reading from their New Works program, Sunday January 23, 2022 at 7pm at the Wade James Theatre in Edmonds.

Join us for a staged reading of ONE MORE THING by Scott Stolnack, directed by Cindy Giese French.

Sally has finally found the daughter she was forced to give up for adoption twenty-three years ago -- Lil is a tough, smart, troubled young woman, unlucky in love and suspicious of her newly discovered ‘mother.’ Add in an awkward private investigator, and Lil’s clueless biological father. A comedy (maybe) -- with teeth in surprising places.

Although admission to this event is free, please reserve your tickets in advance. Please note COVID protocols.

And here's a message from Ernesto:

Welcome all! We are open as an espresso cafe and do serve beer and wine. We are adding to our limited retail items and have many collectibles for sale.

Live music happy hours on Fridays 4pm to 7pm or later. Cafe hours at this time are Tuesday through Thursday (7am-3pm), Friday (7am-7pm or later), Saturday and Sunday(9am-5pm).

Our hours are still adjusting to the flow and we are seeking an afternoon to evening barista/server to fill in the shift as the season and work during entertainment activities as they develop.

We thank you all for the enthusiastic support and patronage.

Be safe and well.
Ernesto and Paula, Sheridan Market Cafe
