Yes, ‘tis the season of gift giving and local artisans will be serving up a wide variety of giftable goodies for everyone on your list. So whether you’re heading back for something you saw last time or looking for something new, you’ll find it at the market on Sunday!

And you definitely won’t want to miss the LFP Farmers Market, which can always be counted on to have the freshest and best in Washington grown and produced fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, wines, baked goods, and more.

Many of your favorite regular season vendors will be there to help you stock up for your feasts with friends and family over the holidays.

You’ll find farmers like Garden Treasures, Well Fed Farms, and Sidhu Farms, sweet treats from Doll House Baked Goods and Pete’s Perfect Toffee, “adult” beverages from Lopez Island Vineyards, Greenwood Cider, and Amantikir Coffee, plus Wilson Fish, La Pasta, Cascade Valley Farm (aka Rainier Salsa), and more!

Both artisans and food vendors are still being added to the roster, so check the Third Place Commons website for the full, most up-to-date list.

So start making your lists and checking them twice because it all happens this Sunday, December 19th in the regular market location, the parking lot of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park.

And while you’re planning for the weekend, be sure to check out the last weekend of live music for the year this Friday and Saturday night from 7-9pm at Third Place Commons. It’s a great line-up!

On Friday, December 17th, the always awesome Ranger and the Re-Arrangers will take the stage with their violin-led acoustic jazz combo featuring upbeat, high-energy swinging strings that always please.

Then on Saturday, December 18th, things heat up even more with the North Seattle Jazz Orchestra. Each of these bands is a sure-fire crowd pleaser, so why not stop by both nights for some musical inspiration that’s perfect for the season?

Upstart Huskies upend powerful Hoyas to reach NCAA Men’s Soccer Final with Shorewood grad on the team

By Tar C Aw

The #2 ranked Washington Huskies (18-1-2) were figuratively and literally in unfamiliar territory as they entered the semi-final of the NCAA Division I Men’s College Soccer playoff, held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

The UW program had never advanced beyond the quarter-final stage in their history, but they clinched a spot in the College Cup Final Four by dispatching #10 seed St. Louis Billikens a week ago, 2-0.

Before them stood the mighty #3 Georgetown Hoyas (18-2-1), who had not only won an NCAA Championship two years ago, but also eliminated the Huskies in 2019. Their blue supporters greatly outnumbered the purple faithful, and were loud and noisy, creating a seething cauldron to endure in order to play for the coveted trophy.

The first half was a defensive tussle, with both offenses effectively neutralized by disciplined defenses stifling even the suggestion of a shot on goal. The Hoyas had the better amount of possession, with the Huskies content to absorb pressure and mount swift counter-attacks. But the defenses held the upper hand, snuffing out any attacks, ending the first 45 minutes deadlocked at nil-nil.

The #8 Clemson Tigers lie in wait of the winners, who had tied the #4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1-1 in the other semifinal, and had to grind out double OT and a PK shootout to stake a place in the final. It looked like this match was also destined to go the distance, with both teams evenly matched, both giving not an inch of ground.

It would take some outrageous luck or magical skill to break this stalemate, and so it proved in the second half. In the 54th minute, what looked like another futile cross into the box by junior midfielder Lucas Meek (Mercer Island HS) towards target man Gio Miglietti, took a slight deflection off the shin of GU defender Kenny Nielsen to bounce awkwardly into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

This was a goal Nielsen was not eager to claim, and gladly allowed Meek to be credited with the shot.

Sensing the shift in momentum, the Huskies turned up the offensive pressure, probing the defense, with several thrusts down the right flank. As the Hoyas settled into the box with 5 defenders repelling any through balls, junior fullback Charlie Ostrem (Shorewood HS) received a pass in the 57th minute just outside of the 18-yard box.

He touched it to his right, launched a sublime strike above the heads of the defensive line into the top right corner, beyond the reach of the goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. Ostrem, a homegrown product from Richmond Beach, was better known for his assists and defensive prowess, made a world-class attacking shot worthy of a Messi or Ronaldo, was the man of the moment, and now, local hero.

In the span of four minutes, the Huskies had a stranglehold on the match, but there was still more than half an hour to go, and the Hoyas were not going to go quietly. They had no choice but to emerge from their defensive formation and venture forward with greater urgency.

Could U-Dub withstand the pressure, hold off Gee-U, and defend their advantage? As the clock wound down to the 80th minute, the Hoyas pressed forward yet again, launched a precise cross-field ball from the left side towards the far post, to be met smartly by the head of attacking midfielder Zach Riviere that stalwart goalie Sam Fowler (Issaquah HS) got a hand to, but could not keep out of the net, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The last ten minutes were a spine-tingling frenzy of back-and-forth as Georgetown piled on the pressure. With 8 seconds left in regulation, they get a long-distance free-kick that arcs high into the box, and as Washington defenders desperately try to push it away, it falls to that man Riviere, unmarked at the penalty spot, but his first-time volley sails harmlessly over the bar.

Joy is unrestrained, especially for long-suffering family and friends in the stands, whose journey started out 14 years ago on the turf fields of the Shoreline recreational soccer league.

No matter what happens on Sunday, this team has already stamped their names in the history of athletic achievements in the UW pantheon.

Help count birds for science during Audubon’s Annual Christmas Bird Count

The National Audubon Society invites birdwatchers and people with backyard bird feeders to participate in the longest-running citizen science survey - the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count (CBC). On Saturday, December 18, 2021 birders and nature enthusiasts will take part in this century long project.

Birders of all ages are welcome to contribute to this fun, nationwide citizen science project, which provides ornithologists with a crucial snapshot of our native bird populations during the winter months.

The Edmonds / South Snohomish County CBC is performed in a count circle with a diameter of 15 miles that is centered near Martha Lake in Lynnwood.
If you live inside the red circle, you are invited to participate in the Bird Count.
Enlargeable map here

This circle covers South Everett, Mukilteo, Mill Creek, Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrance, Maltby and much of Bothell, as well as all or part of several neighborhoods in Shoreline, the northern part of Lake Forest Park and Kenmore.

In 2019 a record 107 people counted birds at feeders at 81 locations. The feeder counters detected 3,889 birds belonging to 51 species. This accounted for 11% of the birds detected on the count.

The feeder counters found 100% of the California Quail, 73% of the Band-tailed Pigeons, 52% of the Anna Hummingbirds, 50% of the Barred Owls, 51% of the Chestnut-backed Chickadees, 65% of the Bushtits, 67% of the Red-breasted Nuthatches, 67% of the White-throated Sparrows, 50% of the Orange-crowned Warblers, and 58% of the Townsend’s Warblers.

To see photos of these local birds, check out the For the Birds columns written by Christine Southwick here. Or you can use the search box in the first column to look for a specific bird here: http://www.ShorelineAreaNews.com.

Overall, the feeder counters had a significant positive impact on the success of the count. Complete results of 2019 local CBC can be found on the Pilchuck Audubon Website here.

To participate by counting birds in your yard and feeders confirm that you live within the count circle, using this zoomable map on the Pilchuck Audubon website. Instructions and the reporting form are found on the same page as the map. You can also contact Rick Taylor at cbc.waed@pilchuckaudubon.com

Data compiled in South Snohomish and Northern King County area will record every individual bird and bird species seen in a specified area, contributing to a vast citizen science network that continues a tradition stretching back more than 100 years.

Windstorm: not enough branches for a Christmas tree

Pam Cross says "Last year I made my Christmas tree from branches that fell down during a December windstorm so I was pretty excited about the big windstorm we were supposed to have last night!"

But it was enough to blow down a few trees and power lines! A couple of people still don't have power.

There was at least one good gust at my house. A wind chime that has been hanging under the eaves on the north side of my house for 20 years ended up flat on the deck. (No photo, it's too sad-looking). It broke off the hook.

My street is pretty messy, too, full of small tufts of trees. I'm just as happy we didn't get more.

Outage map at 3am Saturday 12-11-21

More outages. A new one in the area of the 185th Sound Transit station took out 143 households - another tree.

A very large outage north and east of the original outage has affected an additional 3000 homes. That one stretches all the way to the reservoir and Horizon View Park.

The lights are still on in Woodway, but there is a large area without power directly north of Lake Ballinger.

Northshore Fire: Be prepared for power outages

Photo by Qasim Malick on Unsplash
Power outages can cause a number of safety concerns; being prepared and having the right information can help.

There are steps you can take before a power outage occurs, such as registering life-sustaining and medical equipment with your utility company.

Make sure your disaster preparedness kit contains light sticks, flashlights, a battery-powered radio with extra batteries and a wind-up clock.

Always have a safe alternative heat source and supply of fuel. Never burn charcoal or use a generator indoors.

During a power outage turn off lights and electrical appliances except for the refrigerator and freezer.

Even if it is dark, turn light switches and buttons on lamps or appliances to the “off” position, leaving just one lamp on so that you will know when power is restored.

Never use gas ovens, gas ranges, barbecues or portable or propane heaters for indoor heating—they use oxygen and create carbon monoxide that can cause suffocation.

Avoid candles since they can cause a fire. It's far better to use battery-operated flashlights or glow sticks for lighting.

Social Services Champion: Beverly Hawkins, Board President Camp United We Stand

Beverly Hawkins, Human Services Champion
At its annual Human Services awards meeting on December 1, 2021 NUHSA (North Urban Human Services Alliance) awarded Beverly Hawkins, Board President of Camp United We Stand its Human Services Champion award.

With a tireless commitment to help those who are unhoused, Beverly oversees an itinerant camp of up to 35 individuals, coordinating funding and logistics while also working one-on-one with campers to provide assistance and a connection to resources.

And she does all of this while in a second-round battle with bone cancer and single-handedly raising her nephew while working full time.

One nomination noted, “Her sense of oneness with all the campers is boundless, and as a black woman helping campers who are mostly white, she also teaches them how to ignore the differences in people and focus on what they have in common – a need for safety, security, and at least minimal comfort, dignity, respect and a sense of community. This is her focus daily – not for herself, but for others.”

Her challenge now is to find the next host for the camp, which must move in early January. Camp United We Stand (CUWS) is a small tent city which moves every three - six months to a different host location. Hosts, usually churches, provide a place to pitch tents and bring in services such as water and electricity.

CUWS is in a dire situation because it does not yet have a host church, county or city land, or a commercial parking lot to move to on January 12, 2022.

The CUWS Board implores all reading this to look at all properties they own or control or know about and tell us if there is a possibility for CUWS to put its camp there for 3 to 6 months – now or sometime in the next two years.

To comply with local laws, the space should be 7,500 sq.ft. (although can be less in some cities) and should have access to water and electricity. CUWS can pay for all other needs and services.
