Shoreline Veterans add kiosk to Veterans Recognition Plaza for the Space Force

Photos by Doug Cerretti

The Shoreline Veterans Recognition Plaza, north of Shoreline City Hall Council Chambers features kiosks for each branch of the military.

Recently they added a kiosk for the U.S. Space Force, which was created after the Plaza was completed.

The medallions on the sides of the kiosk are stamped on sheets of metal. They are bolted to the kiosk. A technician engraves the design, then stains it.

The finished product is quite striking.

Cycling into adventure - three friends set off for Mexico

Three friends are anxious to begin their adventure

Story and photos by David Walton

On Tuesday, November 8, 2021, three cyclists left Lake Forest Park with a destination of Tijuana, Mexico.

Rebecca Walton

Rebecca Walton (Shorecrest High School, class of 2015), Landon Shaeffer and Hannah Buckley began the day in the sunshine.

Their nearly 1500 mile route is estimated to take about six weeks. They will bike camp along the way.

Landon Shaeffer is traveling with his guitar

Music will be part of the adventure as Landon is carrying the guitar. Their route will take them along the west side of the Olympic Mountains, generally following Highway 101 (until it becomes Highway 1) along the coast.

Hannah Buckley
Why this time of year (if you are a resident and wondering about rain)?

Simply, this is when their work schedules allow it. Landon and Rebecca finished contract teaching at Kroka Expeditions (a non-profit wilderness expedition school based on a year-round, organic farm in Marlow, New Hampshire).

Hannah finished contract work at Seed Song Farm and Center ( a non-profit organization that provides educational and cultural experiences of sustainable agriculture and agroecology in Kingston, NY.)

Let the adventure begin!

Their approach: Why let the rain dampen your enthusiasm for exploring? They just geared up for it and let the adventure begin!

In the Garden Now: Paperbark Maple

Paperbark Maple
Story and photo by Victoria Gilleland

The progression of fall color seems to have been carefully orchestrated this year. One tree right after another has taken center stage. It's almost as if the trees have been passing along a sign saying "Best Fall Color" to each tree in succession.

I've been watching this Paper Bark Maple for days as a rich red hue has gradually swarmed the green leaves of the tree. The color is absolutely stunning! A variegated English Laurel provides the perfect backdrop. What a winning combination!

(Botanical name: Acer griseum)

North Cascades Highway closed for the season due to avalanche risk

The North Cascades Highway in warmer months
MAZAMA- With a forecast of snow followed by warmer, wet weather, the SR 20 North Cascades Highway closed on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 for the season. The closure points will be milepost 134/Ross Dam Trailhead on the west side and milepost 171/Silver Star Gate on the east.

Up to ten more inches of snow was forecasted for Wednesday, followed by a warm, wet Thursday and Friday, increasing the risk of avalanches across Rainy and Washington passes. Unlike US 2 Stevens Pass and I-90 Snoqualmie Pass, the North Cascades does not have facilities to perform avalanche control work to alleviate the condition.

For the safety of the traveling public and winter maintenance crews, the pass must be closed.

Reopening in the spring is usually accomplished by early May.

Scene on the Sound: The Nimitz

Jan Hansen comments that "The Nimitz is so massive that when she was directly in front of me, she overflowed my lens."

The Nimitz is a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, home based at Naval Station Kitsap.

Wikipedia says:

USS Nimitz (CVN-68) is a supercarrier of the United States Navy, and the lead ship of her class. One of the largest warships in the world, she was laid down, launched, and commissioned as CVAN-68, "aircraft carrier, attack, nuclear powered", but she was later redesignated as CVN-68, "aircraft carrier, multi-mission, nuclear-powered", on 30 June 1975, as part of a fleet-wide realignment that year.

Shoreline City Council 2021

The agenda for the November 15, 2021 Shoreline Council Regular meeting includes four action items and one study item.

Action items
  1. 8(a) Adoption of Ordinance No. 945 – Amending the 2021-2022 Biennial Budget as Amended, According to the Mid-Biennium Budget Modification
  2. 8(b) Adoption of Ordinance No. 946 – Setting the 2022 Regular Property Tax Levy
  3. 8(c) Adoption of Ordinance No. 947 – Setting a Fee Schedule for Impact Fees
  4. 8(d) Adoption of Resolution No. 484 – Setting the 2022 Fee Schedule

At the November 1, 2021 City Council Regular Meeting, the City Council was presented a brief financial update, recommended adjustments to the 2021-2022 Biennial Budget, and provided information on related policy issues.

At the November 8, 2021 City Council Regular Meeting, the City Council conducted public hearings on the 2021-2022 Biennial Budget and the 2021-2026 Capital Improvement Plan Mid-Biennial Update required by state law (RCW 35A.34.130) for the purpose of modifying the City’s biennial budget prior to the City Council’s adoption of proposed Ordinances No. 945, 946, 947 and proposed Resolution No. 484.

The questions asked and amendments proposed will be addressed during this meeting prior to the scheduled adoption.

Study item 9(a) Discussion of Ordinance No. 948 – Amending Chapter 15.05, Construction and Building Codes, of the Shoreline Municipal Code, to Provide Amendments to the Washington State Energy Code - Commercial, as Adopted by the State of Washington

Increasing concerns about the environmental and public health impacts of fossil fuels used in buildings have led some municipalities to ban fossil fuel hookups in new construction.

The City Council discussed this topic on August 16, 2021 and indicated general support for an ordinance to limit the use of fossil fuels for commercial construction and multi-family projects over three stories in height since Washington State prohibits local governments from passing electrification ordinances for new residential construction.

This approach provides consistency for builders operating in Seattle, Shoreline and King County and yields regional emission reduction benefits.

Book review by Aarene Storms: The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels

The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

If the fashionable London as seen in the popular Netflix series "Bridgeton" had access to magic that would allow their houses to fly around, I feel quite sure the backstabbing socialites of high society would have turned out exactly like the characters in The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels.

Polite manners and teacakes, paired with pistols and thievery, plus a swashbuckling romance between a proper lady (who is also a pirate) and a pirate (who is also a charming gentleman), complicated by mayhem, attempted assassination, explosions, kidnapping, poetry, and flying battle-houses.

Completely ridiculous? Yes. Also: completely delightful. I laughed all the way through this frothy story.

Highly recommended for readers of regency romances, historical/magical novels, and those who like a bit of silliness in their stories.

A few minor cuss words and one swoony, non-lurid sex scene. The audiobook narrated by Elizabeth Knowelden is fun, too.

This title stands alone well, but I see that a minor character will have a spin-off story, with a release date of March 2022.  I can hardly wait!

Ages 14 to adult.

Aarene Storms is a librarian who reads and reviews books for all ages. She can be reached at aarenex@haikufarm.net

Inslee-led coalition of governments commits to slashing carbon emissions

Gov. Jay Inslee
GLASGOW, Scotland – A coalition of 68 state, regional and city governments led by Gov. Jay Inslee today affirmed their urgent commitment to addressing the climate crisis by signing a range of emissions-slashing actions ahead of 2030.

This is part of a global call from local and regional governments in recognition of the increased impacts of climate change and their critical role in addressing it.

At a press event with other leaders on Sunday, Inslee announced an executive order to fully electrify Washington state's public fleets and transition to a 100% zero-emission light duty fleet by 2035, as well as 100% zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty state fleets by 2040.

"Together with the rest of the leaders here and those everywhere else today who are committed to this fight, we will lead the charge on decarbonizing the transportation sector," Inslee said.

Convening at COP26, governments from the Under2 Coalition, U.S. Climate Alliance and C40 acknowledged the need to move beyond lofty goals and focus on immediate actions to reach them in order to keep global temperature rises to 1.5 degrees. This means taking measures across all sectors to drive down emissions and protect biodiversity.

The range of actions announced Sunday covers:
  • Inter-governmental cooperation and planning
  • Built environment
  • Clean transportation
  • Energy
  • Environmental justice
  • Nature-based solutions
  • Waste
  • Agriculture

"We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to effectively mitigate climate change. The actions we take in the next five years will determine the fate of our species. I’m proud to stand with this global coalition of governors and mayors to go beyond pledges," Inslee said.
"Together, we are charting a path to make tangible, meaningful progress to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and get to net-zero by 2050. Now is the time for leaders to buckle down and get it done.”

Among today’s commitments are pledges to require 100% of new car sales be zero-emission vehicles beginning 2035 and 100% zero-carbon energy by 2045, as well as ensuring 100% net zero operating emissions from new building construction from 2030.

Other commitments include conserving at least 30% of land and coastal waters by 2030 and ensuring that at least 40% of expenditures benefit overburdened communities and vulnerable populations.

A recent United Nations report showed that with current emissions projections, the world should be prepared for a temperature rise of about 2.7°C by the end of the century.

The consequences of this rise would be catastrophic, and again underline the need for short-term – as well as long term – commitments. Although today’s pledges are an important step, it is clear that more needs to be done at all levels to ensure genuine progress on climate change.

Wind, rain, power outages and a tornado warning

Power outages at noon Tuesday
By Diane Hettrick

Tuesday, November 9, 2021 was a pretty wild day, weather-wise.

For me it started by being jolted awake by a big wind gust that shook the house, with trees pelting my roof with cones that sounded like bricks.

Groggily I wandered around the house, wondering where the safest place would be if trees fell and sent spears through my roof.

The cat had wisely bolted for the basement.

I decided that nowhere was safe and went back to bed. I was awakened at least twice more before I gave up and got out of bed.

Carl Dinse told me that his Richmond Beach weather station measured wind gusts of 32mph, and it was probably 40mph in the tree tops of central Shoreline.

Tornado warning sent to a
few hundred thousand people
Just after noon a tornado cell formed over the Kitsap Peninsula and was picked up by Doppler radar.

This information was automatically fed into the Emergency Alert System and immediately sent out to a few hundred thousand people, warning that a tornado was possible and to seek shelter immediately in a basement.

At 12:30pm or 12:15pm depending on which service your alerts come from, the warning was cancelled as the cell had dissipated.

The warning was actually supposed to go only to Kitsap county residents. The Northwest Weather Service (NWS) is trying to find the glitch in the system.

The rest of the afternoon was a rotation of heavy rain, then completely overcast skies, then brilliant sunshine. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Puddles were forming on streets. A few basements were flooding, which probably won't work for protection from tornados.

If you have standing water on the street or flooded basements in Shoreline, you may want to report it through the See-Click-Fix app which allows you to send photos.

The tornado warning was supposed to go only to Kitsap county residents

Lake Forest Park has a system to report problems to Public Works here. Take a photo in case you are contacted for more information.

I can hardly wait to see what tomorrow brings.
