Shorecrest HS Volleyball takes down Glacier Peak Volleyball in a 5 set thriller

Team photo by Robyn Williams

Shoreline Police: "Go away!"

Wednesday evening, September 22, 2021 around 6pm, King County Sheriff's Office deputies in Shoreline responded to the intersection of NE 175th St and 15th Ave to investigate a three car collision.

Evidence indicates the driver of the beige F150 was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of NE 175th St.

"Go away!" was the answer the Ford's 78-year-old driver gave deputies when they asked for his name. He declined to participate in voluntary field sobriety tests and refused to share a breath sample after he was returned to the Shoreline police station.

A judge approved a warrant to draw the driver's blood. A DUI charge is likely, depending on toxicology results. He was left in the care hospital doctors for injuries sustained in the collision.

Drunk driving doesn't just happen at closing time. This collision shows that DUI collisions can occur any time of day or night. Whatever the hour, King County deputies are trained to investigate impaired driving and will take the steps necessary to build successful cases.

King County will never "Go away!" from drunk drivers.

Power outage on Serpentine

Thanks to a skinny, ivy covered tree, there is a very localized power outage around Serpentine near the Shoreline Library. Reported at 6pm, it affects 53 households and is expected to be repaired by 10pm

Photo by John Boril

The tree fell and took down a power line. Since it's the only outage in the entire system, it's being repaired immediately and should be back in service long before the posted time of 10pm.

In the meantime, safety conscious and resourceful neighbors borrowed some of the light rail project signs to warn drivers about the tree and wires in the road.

UPDATE: The lights came back on at 10:50pm.

Edmonds business owner pleads guilty to wire fraud in connection with arson for insurance scheme

The U.S. Department of Justice reports that an Edmonds, Washington, business owner pleaded guilty Monday, September 27, 2021 to wire fraud related to the April 30, 2018, fire at her business, CJN Miniatures and More, a dollhouse, miniatures, collectibles, and antiques shop, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.

Connie L. Bigelow, 53, is scheduled for sentencing by U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik on December 17, 2021 at 10am.

In the plea agreement, Bigelow admits she set fire to her business to collect insurance money as the store was struggling to make enough money to pay the rent.

In June 2019 the building was empty and for sale
Bigelow moved her business, CJN Miniatures LLC, into the building at 23030 Highway 99, in Edmonds in September 2017. The store maintained an inventory of miniatures and collectables for sale, consigned items on behalf of other individuals, and rented out space to other vendors.

Between October 2017 and April 2018, the business fell behind in rental payments and payments to consignors.

Bigelow carried an insurance policy with State Farm Fire and Casualty Company that covered up to $100,000 in loss of business personal property, as well as loss of income. The policy did not cover loss arising from arson.

Bigelow set the fire underneath three Thomas Kinkade paintings worth thousands of dollars.

In May 2018, Bigelow initiated a claim to State Farm for the losses arising from the fire. On May 3, 2018, Bigelow communicated with the insurance agent via email as part of the wire fraud scheme. Bigelow made false statements to law enforcement, as well as representatives of State Farm as part of the scheme to defraud.

As part of the plea agreement, Bigelow agrees to make full restitution. Currently the restitution is over $195,000 but may grow as further losses are calculated in advance of sentencing.

Wire fraud is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Judge Lasnik will determine the appropriate sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The case is being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), along with the Snohomish County Fire Marshal's’ Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Amy Jaquette.

Do you maintain a Little Free Pantry?

Greetings to all of the compassionate people who are maintaining and stocking Little Free Pantries. We know where all the pantries are but not the contact information for the people who maintain them.

We are occasionally sent questions about specific pantries, so would appreciate having your contact info. Send to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

The following was sent to Andrea Petrusky who set up the first Little Free Pantry in the area, in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood. It is from Jessica McClard, who started the original LFP in Arkansas.
~~~
In partnership with Celadon Books and Dr. Jane Goodall’s The Book of Hope: A Survival Guide for Trying Times, I’m thrilled to invite you to participate in a day of “Sharing the Hope” on Saturday, October 16, 2021.
Celadon Books has arranged for 350 book reviewers and booksellers across the U.S. to share food and a copy of Dr. Goodall’s upcoming book in local pantries across the country on the same day.
Each person will share a photo and location of the pantry they visited on Instagram and encourage their followers to go share food as well. This day of action is in direct response to Dr. Goodall’s call to end food insecurity while spreading her message of why we can all have hope for the future.
If you would like to join this day of hope on October 16, please fill out this form, and Celadon Books will send you two copies of The Book of Hope – one to place in your pantry and one to keep – along with an instruction sheet for posting on social media.
Your pantry address will be added to Celadon’s map of food + book drop locations, and the photo that you post will be shared by Celadon Books’ Instagram account that day.
Those who want to participate in this day are also invited to Dr. Goodall’s live, virtual book launch event on Wednesday, October 20 at 12 p.m. EDT! Celadon Books will send you a link to join this special event with a live audience Q&A, and they will send a link to the recorded event afterward for those who could not attend live.
Thank you for continuing to share hope with your communities through your pantry!
Sincerely,
Jessica
Tree of the Month: This Little Shore Pine
Shore Pine tree photo by Boni Biery
By Boni Biery
I have a tree in my yard that I used to just call a Shore Pine, but it turns out this tree (the small one, with the curving trunk and loaded with "flowers” in the middle) is just one of several subspecies of Lodgepole pines (Pinus contorta) that share the name Shore Pine.
So, I have learned that to be sure I name it correctly I need to use its botanical name to separate it from the others.
It is actually a Pinus contorta ssp. contorta. This NW native grows from southern Alaska along the coast into northern California.
These are tough, adaptable trees and will survive in wetter sites than other pine trees so long as they have enough sunlight.
They also have a very high tolerance for salt spray and are often seen growing near our salty beaches with each tree maturing to its own twisting (contorta), picturesque shape.
These beautiful, native trees seldom exceed 35-50 feet in height. They have dark brown, scaly bark and can be further identified by their relatively short, often twisted needles in bunches of two needles each.
Just imagine, this one, small to medium-sized evergreen is a veritable grocery store for a whole community of creatures.
Some of the birds in my yard known to enjoy the cones are: crossbills, chickadees, nuthatches, finches, bushtits, siskins and kinglets. They forage through the cones in search of seed and insect treasures depending on their needs. And of course, the squirrels forage the cones for seeds too.
Each spring the male “flowers” are initially cheerful, pale yellow packets of pollen in clusters near the tips of the old growth branches. The female flowers are little, dark purple cone-shaped formations that will mature into 1-2” cones borne in either pairs or clusters which point backward toward the trunk.
Pinus Contorta. Photo by Robert L. Carr
The Pinus contorta var. contorta is also a larval host plant for our native Western Pine Elfin butterfly. Eggs are laid at the base of young needles; caterpillars feed on young needles and catkins. Chrysalis overwinters and adults emerge in spring as butterflies. These then move on to a number of flowers that serve as “host plants” for nectar.
While I have not seen this butterfly nor its eggs, I like knowing that it would have place to live should it fly into my yard.
Western Pine Elfin (Callophrys eryphon).
Droppers, WA Butterfly Association
In addition to all of this, this tree has long hosted red-breasted sapsucker(s) as confirmed by the tell-tale rows of sap-wells made by them that go ‘round and ‘round the trunk. While I never see more than one sapsucker at a time, the sap “wells” help to feed many. The sticky sap wells themselves offer food plus they entrap insects that small birds, including our hummers, eat.
Red-Breasted Sapsucker. Photo by Daniel Fitzgerald
How fortunate I am to have this tree and all of its wildlife visitors to observe, and I know that my human neighbors like it too. If you have the space, I encourage you to plant one. They are well positioned to be successful as our climate grows warmer. The birds will surely thank you.
Rep. Javier Valdez: Redistricting maps are now online
Every 10 years, we redraw the political boundaries in our state to make sure districts have equal population – and that nobody’s vote is artificially strengthened or diluted. One person, one vote.
Washington state has a unique system, with an independent commission drawing the lines. There’s also public comment and meetings around the state before commissioners start their work.
There was a joint meeting on September 24, 2021 of the committee I chair, House State Government and Tribal Relations, along with the Senate State Government and Elections Committee.
During the meeting, lawmakers were briefed about the redistricting effort so far. Here is the link to view all the committee documents.
You also have access to the same data and mapping software used to create these maps. To see the four maps, go to redistricting.wa.gov/proposed-maps
Please add your voice to the conversation. Whether online or at the upcoming October 5 outreach meeting, it is critical that the commission’s maps reflect your and your community’s input into our new Legislative District boundaries.
Let the commission know what you think of their proposals: redistricting.wa.gov/commissioner-proposed-maps
Property re-valuation notices arriving now
Property values rose in neighborhoods north of downtown Seattle during 2020.
The King County Assessor’s office is in the process of mailing annual property valuation notices to taxpayers. Notices to property owners have begun arriving locally.
Median residential property values rose by 19.3% in West Central Shoreline, by 15.5% in Lake City, by 9.3% in Green Lake/ Wallingford, and by 16.2% in Laurelhurst/ Windermere/ View Ridge.
Each year, County Assessors set values on every commercial and residential property value in the state. These values – set effective as of January 1 by state law – are then applied to the next year’s tax bill. Property values are being set as of January 1, 2021, for taxes due in 2022.
Data indicates that home sale prices and overall home values have risen sharply in most King County neighborhoods, despite the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“No one knew what to expect a little over a year ago when this public health emergency began,” said Assessor John Wilson.
“Now it is clear that a primary impact on property values has been caused by homeowners not wanting to sell at this time, leading to reduced supply and big price and value increases.”
Rod Dembowski: Light link rail station opens October 2 at Northgate; affordable housing by station
Site of affordable housing adjacent to Northgate Station
On the west side of District 1, there have been many exciting developments at Northgate. As you may know on October 2nd the Link light rail station at Northgate will open. Riders will now be able to get from Northgate to downtown Seattle in 14 (traffic-free) minutes.
As part of the County’s effort to build housing at or near transit hubs, just this week the County announced a proposed lease agreement to build 232 new affordable housing units adjacent to the light rail station.
All units will be affordable to households earning 60 percent or less of the area median income in 2021, or $69,400 for a family of four. The development will provide a mix of unit sizes including at least 52 two- or three-bedroom units.
Additionally, the site will have childcare to help support working families. My staff worked closely with Metro to bring this project online, and more information can be found here.
These exciting developments at Northgate are in addition to the Seattle Kraken opening their Kraken Community Iceplex earlier this month. The Iceplex is housed at the former Northgate Mall, and includes three NHL-sized ice rinks. The beautiful new facility will host youth and amateur hockey for the public.
