Shoreline builder helps a neighbor in need

Under construction now - a ramp for a
Shoreline resident
Ramp Captain Joseph Irons, President of Irons Brothers Construction, and his team of employees and skilled volunteers have designed and have begun building a free wheelchair access-ramp for a local Ridgecrest resident.

Joseph and his team began their work early Wednesday morning and will return to finish the ramp on Saturday, September 25, 2021 all of this being part of the Master Builders of King and Snohomish Counties (MBAKS) Rampathon program.

This year’s ramp recipient suffers from instability and has difficulty walking after having multiple back procedures. For her to ambulate down the current steps requires the use of 2 canes or crutches.

“Just the two steps are hard for me. I have fallen out of my door and down the steps a few times. It is a real struggle to pull myself back up.
"I also suffer from severe foot drop and edema all of which make it extremely difficult to get around. “ J.R., Shoreline resident.

Unfortunately her home’s doorway and front steps have become obstacles for her to use and with a wheelchair ramp, she intends to use a power chair. The Irons Brothers Construction team designed a wheelchair ramp installation with their skills and expertise that will help this resident regain access to come and go from her home.

On the job in Shoreline, Irons Brothers staff and vounteers build a new ramp.

“During Covid-19, the need for access is even greater. Not being able to maintain independence is a significant struggle for this homeowner. With in-person assistance being negatively impacted by Covid-19 restrictions, we are honored to use our carpentry skills to help.” Joseph Irons, 1st Vice-Chair of the Building Industry Association of Washington (BIAW).

The new wheelchair ramp will be built from her doorway out onto the grass landing with pavers that connect to the existing walkway. This will create safe access to her back yard, walkway, and car.

It also allows for her to enjoy the garden and her outdoor spaces and watch her playful cats. This project will be constructed out of easy to maintain and eye-pleasing materials.

We are so glad that our craftsman and volunteers are helping to change this local resident’s daily life.

The recipient is joyful and appreciative of the work that Irons Brothers Construction has agreed to do on her behalf. With this new access, she is looking forward to enjoying her improved way of life. This free wheelchair ramp is being built as part of the Master Builders Association’s 28th year of Rampathon.

On Saturday, September 25, 2021, J.R., along with many other families throughout King and Snohomish Counties will be the recipients of a free wheelchair ramp built as part of the Master Builders Association’s Rampathon Event.

The ramp site construction will begin early around 8am - with about 15 volunteers, including Irons Brothers Construction’s staff, American Insurance Associates’ staff, trade partners, colleagues, friends, and family.

Irons Brothers Construction maintains the highest commitment to philanthropy and giving back to the local community. At the end of the day, the reward is when J.R. can safely use her ramp to be outdoors.

2021 marks the 28th anniversary of the annual Rampathon event.

Since 1993, Master Builders members have contributed more than 500 ramps to members of our King and Snohomish County communities.

This year, Irons Brothers Construction, based in Shoreline, WA will participate in its 17th Rampathon. Thanks to the Master Builders Association and the generous donors listed below, this ramp was built at no cost to the recipient.

"We believe our neighbors in need deserve the same freedoms we have. Wheelchair access ramps are their link to our beautiful community we all share"

Joseph and Melissa Irons, along with an army of staff and volunteers, are passionate about helping others in their community. With over a decade of involvement in Rampathon®, as well as other events sponsored by the Master Builders Association, Irons Brothers Construction is a wonderful example of dedicated builders giving back to the neighborhoods they serve.

“That’s what Rampathon is all about.” Says, Melissa Irons, Vice-Chair of the Master Builders Association’s Remodelers' Council.

Special recognition to donors for this recipient’s ramp include:

  • Irons Brothers Construction, Inc. for volunteer labor and materials
  • American Insurance Associations for volunteer labor and nourishment
  • Dunn Lumber for lumber material donations

Shorecrest tennis hands Shorewood their first loss of the season

Shorecrest boys varsity tennis team

Shorecrest vs Shorewood Varsity Boys Tennis
WESCO 2A/3A/4A
Date: 9/22/21 Location: Kellogg MS
Score: SC:   4     SW:  3     SC Overall Record: 2-4

By Rob Mann, SC Coach

Shorewood has been dominant all season, going undefeated until today when Shorecrest stepped up and handed the Thunderbirds their first loss of the season.

It was an impressive victory considering that the Scots were sitting at a record of 1-4 prior to this rival match. Shorewood doubles teams are exceptional this season with their solid net play and excellent tactics.

The Thunderbird doubles teams are still undefeated after the match today only yielding a total of two games on all three courts. Thus, the Scots needed all four of their singles players to step up their game for this league match and all four of them did.

Zaid Khan (SC) exercised patience by keeping the ball down the middle, then blasted multiple passing shots past JD Drake (SW) when he came to the net to volley. The score was lopsided 6-0, 6-0, but JD played tough and fought hard throughout the match.

Calvin Rice (SC) was able to dictate most of the points by keeping the ball on his forehand side and hitting the ball to the backhand of Murray Falkin (SW). The first set Calvin had an easy time and he thought the second set was going to be easy as well. Murray had other plans and picked up his game in the second set, but it wasn’t quite enough today. Calvin was able to win on court 2 6-2, 6-4.

Owen Pierce SC on the Kellogg Middle School courts

On court 3, the two players were relying on their mental fortitude to win the match. David Lin (SW) got the early break in the first set, but Owen Pierce (SC) was able to break back later in the set a couple of times to win the first set.

Both players were ripping forehands and trying their best to keep the other player deep on the court. Owen minimized his unforced errors this match and looked to get to the net as often as he could to terminate the point. Owen had multiple match points in the second set, but David wasn’t going to go down easily. After multiple match points, Owen finally prevailed 6-4, 6-3.

Matthew Gardiner, Shorecrest, on the Kellogg Middle School courts

At this moment the team score is 3-3. Shorecrest has won all the singles and Shorewood has won all the doubles. The deciding match was fourth singles between Matthew Gardiner (SC) and Tate Nelson (SW).

Matthew had won the first set fairly easily and was up 5-2 in the second set. All eyes from both teams were on this deciding match. Tate went on a four game win streak to bring the score to 5-6 by crushing his first serves and hitting consistent baseline shots.

Thankfully, Matthew was able to stop the streak by winning the next game to bring the set score to 6-6. The two entered into a tiebreaker where Matthew just played more consistently and was able to win the tiebreaker 7-3 and secure the Shorecrest team victory with a score of 6-3, 7-6(3).

The overall team score was 4-3 and the Shorecrest record is 2-4.

Box Scores

Singles
  1. Zaid Khan (SC) def. JD Drake (SW) 6-0, 6-0
  2. Calvin Rice (SC) def. Murray Falkin (SW) 6-2, 6-4
  3. Owen Pierce (SC) def. David Lin (SW) 6-4, 6-3
  4. Matthew Gardiner (SC) def. Tate Nelson (SW) 6-3, 7-6(3)

Five Shoreline Schools seniors selected as 2022 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

First row from left: Yubi Mamiya, Kyla Johnson
Second row from left: Wolfgang Erhart, Beckham Davis, Rohan Wassink

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation recently announced that five Shoreline seniors have been selected as 2022 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

Shorewood High School’s Wolfgang Erhart, Kyla Johnson and Yubi Mamiya, and Shorecrest High School’s Beckham Davis and Rohan Wassink were selected for the prestigious recognition.

Of the over 1.5 million students who entered the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors, only 16,000 become semifinalists. The semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

Shoreline’s five semifinalists now have the opportunity to compete for Merit Scholarship awards by qualifying as a National Merit Finalist in February 2022. About 7,600 Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million will be awarded in this spring.

All five students have plans to attend four-year universities after high school and, in addition to excelling in the classroom, each are active in extracurricular clubs and activities at their schools.

Davis is a captain on Shorecrest’s soccer team, has played basketball and club soccer, and enjoys volunteer work. After graduation, he plans to study applied mathematics.

Erhart
plays on the Shorewood football and golf teams, and is a captain on the Shorewood Drumline. He also participates in an annual medical mission to remote parts of Mexico where he assists in surgeries and setting up water filtration systems. He plans to study global health.

Johnson is a captain for the Shorewood cross-country team, runs on the track and field team, and plays the clarinet in the marching band and wind ensemble. She is also vice president on the school’s science club and volunteers for a number of organizations, including serving as a tutor for elementary students. She plans to study in a STEM field.

Mamiya is president of the Shorewood Science Club, a captain on the track and field team, member of the cross-country team and a senior class justice. She is one of two student representatives on the Shoreline School Board of Directors and also volunteers as a tutor. She plans to pursue an interdisciplinary study in science and humanities.

Wassink is a drum major and member of the Shorecrest Marching Band, runs cross-country and is an officer in the schools DECA and science clubs. He also volunteers through his church. He plans to study applied mathematics.

Join us in congratulating each of them and wishing them well in all of their future plans and endeavors!

Small explosive device found at play area in Woodway

Tuesday morning, September 20, 2021 at approximately 9:35am, the Public Works crew in Woodway found a small explosive device in the John Bush play area near Town Hall.

The City alerted the Edmonds Police Department, which provides police services to the Town by contract. The police evacuated Town Hall and nearby residences while they investigated.

The Everett Bomb Squad was called in to remove the device.

There was some vandalism to the play area.

Thankfully, there were no injuries. An adjacent neighbor reported hearing a “loud and frightening explosion” at approximately 1:30am, but they did not call 911. The police did not find any other suspicious devices in the area.

The investigation is open.

Mayor Mike Quinn reminded residents: "if you see or hear anything suspicious, please call 911."

Take note, there are few places with more surveillance cameras than a casino

On Friday, September 3, 2021 at 3:00am, our 9-1-1 dispatchers received a call from the manager of a Shoreline casino located in the 16700 block of Aurora Ave N.

The casino manager stated that someone had broken in to the casino. Since it was unclear if the burglar was still inside, the manager stayed inside his vehicle until deputies arrived.

When deputies arrived they noticed movement on top of the casino's roof. Using their spotlight, deputies determined the suspect was hiding up there. Using a loudspeaker, deputies gave clear instructions to the suspect to come down from the roof.

The suspect appeared agitated and did not want to come down. Using their de-escalation and negotiating skills, deputies continued to have a dialog with the him. Eventually, they convinced the suspect to come down on his own, where deputies immediately took him into custody.

Incident to arrest, a search of the suspect found multiple computer and tablet devices belonging to the casino. Surveillance cameras captured the suspect taking the items.

Deputies also located several keys to the building, which had been reported stolen during a previous burglary at the casino.

The suspect was transported and booked into the King County Jail on the charge of Commercial Burglary in the 2nd Degree.

As a reminder, we do not show suspect’s faces until they have been formally charged.

The park is a busy construction site, closed to vehicles and recreation while the project is underway. Plans for the park include improvements in other sections of the 55 acre park such as a pathway from the Senior Center to the new boat launch.

Toxic algae bloom at Echo Lake

Extremely high levels of toxic algae have been detected at Echo Lake beach at the north end of the lake, which is located between Aurora and the Interurban Trail in Shoreline.

As a result, the City has closed Echo Lake.

Echo Lake closed
Toxic algae can cause serious illness and be fatal to both humans and pets. Do not swim, wade, fish, or enter the water.

Algae blooms occur when there are too many nutrients, like nitrogen and phosphorus, in the water.

The most likely sources of nutrients in the lake are lawn and landscape fertilizer, including weed and feed, as well as waste from waterfowl, pets, or humans.

Warmer temperatures combined with an excess of nutrients cause naturally occurring algae to grow rapidly and causes algae blooms.

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a specific type of toxic algae commonly found in freshwater. At low levels, it is harmless. When toxic algae blooms occur, however, larger amounts of toxins are produced that can harm people, pets, and wildlife.

Shoreline Police: Drugged driving is impaired driving

Around 6:00pm on Thursday evening, September 16, 2021, King County Sheriff's Office deputies in Shoreline observed the driver of this Lincoln SUV slumped behind the wheel near the 15200 block of Aurora Ave N.

That man gave deputies several false names before he was identified using a mobile fingerprint scanner.

With that information they learned he was wanted on an outstanding felony warrant.

The driver admitted to smoking fentanyl and was arrested for DUI.

When he was searched, over $2400 in cash and two bags of pills were recovered. The Lincoln was impounded.

Shoreline medics transported the suspect to a nearby hospital so he could be medically cleared. It was there that deputies obtained a search warrant for his blood.

It will take many weeks before toxicology reports tell us what drugs may have contributed to this incident. He was booked into the SCORE jail for DUI.

This incident is a reminder that drug driving is no different than drunk driving. Washington's laws are clear.

Driving under the influence of 'intoxicating liquor, marijuana or any drug' is DUI. Visit this link to read the statute for yourself.
