Shorewood Tennis 9/9 and 9/10/21

The Shorewood Tennis team finished its first week of tennis matches with a 3-0 record. The T-Birds started the week by defeating Snohomish 5-2, at home, then had back to back wins over Cascade 7-0 and North Creek 4-3.

Photos by Arnie Moreno
On Friday, at North Creek Jaguars home courts, they faced one of the top teams in KingCo 4A. The match featured a high level of tennis from both teams with each match being very competitive. At number 2 singles, junior Murray Falkin played aggressively and won many crucial points to defeat his opponent.

The doubles teams of senior Captain Ethan Farley / Blake Gettmann, Julian Watson / Jack Buma and Connor Vana / Henry Sheffield, all won to sweep the Jaguars.

It came down to the last doubles match, Shorewood's Vana and Sheffield, that had many momentum changes and amazing shots. Their North Creek opponents were able to make some great shots to come from behind to tie the score at 4-4 in the third and deciding set and were not giving up.

The T-Birds bounced back to hold their serve and give themselves a chance to close out the match. Sheffield made aggressive volleys at net and Vana hit the winning last shot, a blistering forehand down their opponents' alley, to clinch victory for the Thunderbirds.

Coach Moreno is extremely proud of the way the Thunderbirds raised their level of play and handled the pressure of a very close match with a tough opponent. Shorewood hosts the highly regarded Edmonds-Woodway Warriors on Monday September 13, 2021 at 3:30pm.

Shoreline was the scene of two dramatic police actions on Thursday night

Seattle Police Officers and Washington State Troopers pursued a North Seattle vehicular homicide suspect to Federal Way, where they arrested the man early Friday morning.

At the same time, Shoreline Police were making an arrest for domestic violence.

Domestic disturbance

Around 11:30pm, Shoreline Police deputies responded to a domestic disturbance near the Aurora Village Transit Center.

Neighbors saw and heard a large police response near N 200th and Wallingford.

"I heard what sounded like a loud motorcycle, cop cars with lights flashing, and bullhorns saying 'Get down on the ground with.your hands out.'" K9 units were on scene.

One person was subsequently arrested for domestic violence assault.

Vehicular homicide

Then, at midnight a line of five Seattle police cars with lights flashing and sirens going traveled the length of Shoreline, traveling north on Aurora then along NE 205th to the freeway.

Seattle Police report that ten minutes before midnight, motorists driving northbound on Aurora Ave in north Seattle called to report the driver of a pick up truck had struck a pedestrian near N 46th St and Aurora Ave in north Seattle.

Multiple callers stated the truck driver had passed them going northbound at a high rate of speed, and then they saw a pedestrian down in the roadway. Seattle Fire Department firefighters arrived and declared the 55-year-old man deceased at the scene.

The truck driver fled northbound on Aurora, and officers spotted him driving with no lights on several blocks away. The driver failed to yield when police attempted a traffic stop, and officers began pursuing him.

In Shoreline, the suspect turned on NE 205th and got on I-5 southbound, followed by the Seattle police. Seattle advised the Washington State Patrol of the pursuit and around N 175th, asked WSP to take jurisdiction.

After receiving permission from a WSP Sergeant, WSP took over the pursuit just south of the ship canal bridge. WSP aircraft was approaching the area and once it was over the pursuit, troopers backed off and let the pilot follow the suspect.

Troopers had set up spikes further south on I-5 and were able to successfully spike the suspect vehicle in an effort to end the pursuit. The suspect continued but at a speed of just below 50mph instead of 100mph.

Near the exit for S 272nd St in Federal Way, troopers took advantage of the lower speed and performed a Pursuit Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver and successfully ended the pursuit.

SPD officers took the 38-year-old man into custody. He will be processed for DUI and booked into King County Jail for vehicular homicide.

Detectives with the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad responded to the scene and will continue investigating.

MPE’s 2021 mural celebrates Edmonds’ ties with Sister City, Hekinan, Japan

Mural by Shogo Ota was photographed by Lee Lageschulte

Anyone near 4th Ave N in Edmonds this last week had the privilege of seeing muralist Shogo Ota in action as he installed Mural Project Edmonds’ (MPE’s) latest mural.

This mural, reminiscent of the Japanese woodblock prints that are a unique Japanese art form, is in recognition of the special relationship between Edmonds and her Sister City - Hekinan, Japan.

For this project, MPE partnered with Urban Artworks, a Seattle nonprofit that creates public art by embracing the creativity and diversity of the community and has a deep commitment to cultural and racial equity.

Through Urban Artworks, MPE has procured the talented Shogo Ota, a Japanese muralist, to create the mural. It was through Shogo’s unparalleled creativity and knowledge of the Japanese culture that the mural was designed.

“We originally came to the table wanting a mural of waves similar to the image of Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” said MPE chair Denise Cole. “It was Shogo who told us that an image of a large wave might be trigger memories of the 2011 tsunami waves that devastated many Japanese coastal areas, most notably in the Tōhoku region.”

The new mural will include waves, but the focal point will be a large heron, thus tying Edmonds into the Japanese imagery.

Edmonds and the city of Hekinan, Japan established a relationship on April 5, 1988 with the goal of fostering exchanges that reflect our intercultural focus between business, education and nonprofit organizations in the local area.

The Sister City Commission has sent and hosted student exchange delegations, adult exchange delegations, and an Assistant Language Teacher.

Muralist Shogo Ota at work. Photo courtesy MPE

The goal of this mural was to not only recognize Edmonds’ Sister City of Hekinan, but to also bring attention to Asian American diversity and the history of Japanese Americans in the Pacific Northwest.

Japanese immigrants first started arriving in the PNW in the 19th century to fill the demand for labor industries such as railroads, mining, timber and fisheries.

However, World War II spawned a rise in anti-Japanese sentiment, and many Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated to assembly centers. After the war, many returned to their homes, but official reparations were not provided until 1988. (Read more about the history here.)

Along with the creation of this mural, an ambitious augmented reality project will also be created later this year. Thanks to Workshop 3D, those with a smartphone will be able to see “live” interviews with the muralist and others which can be accessed through a QR code placed at the site of the mural.

Learn more about this project here.

The mural is made possible this year due to grant from City of Edmonds Arts Commission as well as a donation from the McMurray family.

Mural Project Edmonds (MPE), a committee of Art Walk Edmonds, has been responsible for new murals in downtown Edmonds for the past few years. The overall goal of the new MPE is to bring professional-level, well-planned artistry to our community and to fit appropriately into the chosen space.

MPE has its sights set on next year’s mural project: a tribute to all the essential workers. Preliminary plans for this mural are underway. Anyone interested in donating to the Art Walk Edmonds can do so online at www.artwalkedmonds.com/donate

Scene on the Sound: Cruise ships race through Puget Sound

Drag racing in Puget Sound

Story and photo by Jan Hansen

During the tourist season, Friday and Saturday evenings are a time for a parade of cruise ships, as they take their eager passengers north to Alaska.

Tonight looked different. Instead of a parade, I watched a race.

Celebrity’s Millennium was headed out as usual, but the Ovation of the Seas from the Seven Seas Cruise Line seemed determined to pass her.

Passing in the incoming lane, Ovation of the Seas gains on The Millenium

West of Shoreline, Puget Sound becomes narrow, and there is a mid-channel buoy to divide the shipping lanes. Ovation of the Seas went into the incoming lane and passed our shores at the speed of 21.3 knots.

The Millennium has an average recorded speed of 18 knots with a listed maximum of 19.7 knots; she passed here at 19.1 knots. ( The term “knot” comes to us from the 17th century; 1 nautical mile = 1.15 miles.)

It was a surprise to watch cruise ships change positions; it was no surprise that the Ovation of the Seas was ahead as the ships passed the shores of Whidbey Island.

Lynnwood, Washington man sentenced to 10 years in prison for gun and drug trafficking

A 39-year-old Lynnwood, Washington, man was sentenced Thursday, September 9, 2021 in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 10 years in prison for federal charges stemming from his drug and gun trafficking, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.

Jose L. Casablanca and co-defendant, Jessie N. Cruz, were arrested in late July 2020, following a lengthy undercover investigation. In May 2021, Casablanca pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, possession of a machine gun, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

At the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik said, “This is your last chance… When you come out in your 40s you will have missed many events with your daughters.” Judge Lasnik urged Casablanca to choose a new path.

“This defendant sold heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl, three of the most deadly and addictive controlled substances available, that have ravaged communities and families in Western Washington,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Gorman. “Add to that his firearms trafficking – including possessing a machine gun – and this defendant has demonstrated he is a danger to the community.”

Records filed in the case detail how two detectives with the Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force (SRDTF) posed as drug and gun buyers to gather information about the pair’s drug trafficking activity.

The undercover detectives made purchases of heroin, methamphetamine, and fentanyl pills from Casablanca and Cruz. They also purchased a fully automatic firearm, classified as an illegal machine gun, and other firearms from the pair.

Casablanca is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms, so the two discussed with undercover officers how Cruz transported the guns to the sale location so that Casablanca would not be caught with a firearm.

Casablanca and Cruz confided to the undercover detectives where they had hidden a massive amount of fentanyl in their Lynnwood home. On the day they were arrested at a regional airport, they met with yet another undercover officer who was posing as someone who could get them access to a pill press to make fentanyl tainted pills from their large stash of the potentially deadly drug.

A court-authorized search warrant at the Lynnwood home resulted in the seizure of large amounts of heroin, fentanyl, multiple firearms, and ammunition, as well as body armor.

At the time of their arrest, law enforcement searched the Maserati the couple used in their drug trafficking activities and found both narcotics and a firearm.

Co-defendant Cruz was sentenced in April 2021 to seven years in prison. Both will be on three years of supervised release following prison.

The case was investigated by the Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force and the United States Marshals Service Violent Offender Task Force, with assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF).

North end fire departments train in Shoreline on rope rescues

This week the North King County Training Consortium, which includes fire departments from Northshore, Shoreline, Bothell, and Woodinville, worked collaboratively on rope-rescue training on a Shoreline hillside.

In these photos, the crews are performing a tended litter over the embankment exercise.

This simulates raising an injured patient in a special basket used to carry and deliver people from a ravine safely up to an area where they can be treated and/or transported.

2022 ShoreLake Arts Gallery Rotating Exhibits

Deadline: October 31, 2021

ShoreLake Arts, a not-for-profit organization, is looking for local artists to show in 2022 at our gallery in Lake Forest Park, WA.

Our 5-6 week rotating exhibits feature two artists with each person showing on approximately nine feet of wall space. The gallery schedule is set on a yearly basis. The gallery is also a gift shop with artist-made small works and jewelry. Applying for small works is a different process.

See the application on our website for more information: shorelakearts.org

Artists are invited to submit the following:
  • Brief bio
  • Artist’s statement
  • Link to website address (if applicable)
  • 5 digital images (as attachments only – No ZIP files) that reflect a cohesive body of work with an image list that includes title, medium, size and price

Please submit all of the above in one email with the images being the only attachments to: gallery@shorelakearts.org

Submission Guidelines:
  • We show local, Pacific Northwest artists only. All work must be hand delivered – no shipped work will be accepted.
  • We prefer showing artists that haven’t had a show at the gallery in the past two years. All work shown in the gallery must be original, for sale and not shown in the gallery before.
  • Commission on sold work is 50% with a maximum commission of $80. Everything priced at $160 retail or higher has a commission of $80 per piece.
  • Work must be no larger than 36”x36”, including the frame.
  • Work does not have to be the images submitted as long as it is similar in theme, style, medium and size.
  • All work must be wired and ready for hanging.
  • We are looking for a cohesive body of work as it shows better in our smaller space. All media is considered.

ShoreLake Arts Gallery is located inside, on the lower level of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park: 17171 Bothell Way NE. We encourage you to stop by and view the space.

2022 Application Deadline: October 31, 2021

Clouds like soapsuds

Friday, September 10, 2021

Lee has been capturing some interesting cloud formations recently. I particularly like this one, which looks like someone put dish soap in the dishwasher.

Maybe we should give it credit for washing the wildfire smoke out of the air.

And hey - how about that guy who wrapped his house in aluminum foil?

Case updates September 8, 2021 - if you have had COVID-19 you still need a vaccination

Case updates September 8, 2021 -
no Washington updates on weekends and holidays; otherwise "Total" figures are cumulative and "new" numbers represent one day's results

If I had COVID-19, do I need a vaccine?

Yes, you should get the vaccine even if you already had COVID-19.5 Data shows it is uncommon to get COVID-19 again in the 90 days after you were infected.

That means you might have some protection from COVID-19 (called natural immunity) for at least a little while. But we don't know how long natural immunity might last. And if you rely only on natural immunity, you risk getting sick or spreading the virus to others. That is why it is important to get the vaccine, even if you had COVID-19 before.
