Shoreline Police: Can you hear me now? You're wanted

Adventures of an Icebreaker: You're on your own in the Arctic

We have been following the USCGC Healy from Puget Sound on its voyage around North America. The Healy is currently in the desolate Beaufort Sea in the Arctic, north of Alaska.

U.S. Coast Guard Photos by Chief Petty Officer Matt Masaschi

When you’re operating in the remote parts of the world, you can’t call 911 and expect help to be there. So our crews frequently train to respond to a wide range of potential shipboard emergencies.

Planning for shipboard emergencies keeps crews sharp and ready to respond should a real situation develop aboard a cutter. Every crewmember has a responsibility and they must work together to save the ship if disaster strikes.

Damage Control drills simulate potential emergencies and test the crew’s ability to efficiently recognize and respond to the situation.

Coast Guard Cutter Healy crewmembers were tested on combating a shipboard fire in one of the ship’s auxiliary machine rooms during their Arctic deployment as they transited the Beaufort Sea.

Together the crew battled the simulated fire!

Green heron at Ronald Bog

Monday, September 6, 2021

Ronald Bog has a lot of creatures - all of whom seem to have coped with the refurbishing of the park at the north end. Turtles, otters, crayfish (invasive and native), ducks, geese, eagles, hawks, and this green heron - who really is green.

Martin DeGrazia has photographed them all. He has a particular talent for getting elusive creatures like the otters to pose for him. I call him the Bog Whisperer.

AG Ferguson: Utilities will offer payment plans, financial assistance for customers with past due accounts

OLYMPIA — Attorney General Bob Ferguson is offering guidance for utility customers who have past due accounts and may be at risk of a utility shut off. The statewide moratorium on utility disconnections ends on September 30, 2021.

In June, there were more than 280,000 people who had past due bills with the five investor-owned utilities in the state, according to utility filings.

That total number was similar to where it was in March 2020. However, in March 2020, people had past due amounts totaling just over $39 million.

As of June, that number had more than doubled to over $80 million. Nearly $54 million of that total came from bills that were 90 or more days past due.

As of June, the five energy companies had the following number of customers with past due bills:
  • Avista had 36,973
  • Cascade Natural Gas had 16,051
  • Northwest Natural Gas had 12,300
  • Pacific Power had 24,110
  • Puget Sound Energy had 191,925
“As we emerge from the pandemic, we need to remember that many individuals and families are struggling financially,” Ferguson said.
“Washingtonians need to know there is assistance if they are past due on paying for their utilities. No one should be facing utility cutoffs. My office will continue standing up for Washington ratepayers.”

Artist in Residence Team explores Saltwater Park through site-specific dance performance

Saturday, September 4, 2021

The City of Shoreline Public Art Program is delighted to announce the third of four artist residencies occurring at the Art Cottage at Saltwater Park in 2021, each two months in duration and experimenting with materials, methods, and the creative process.

Seattle and Shoreline-based artists Nicole Loeffler-Gladstone and Audrey Rachelle will present Humility : Drift, a free site-responsive dance performance.

Loeffler-Gladstone is an editor, writer and dance artist based in NYC. And Seattle. She co-produces The Bunker Presents, a roving performance series showing the most interesting contemporary dance in the most unusual settings. She also writes for Dance Magazine.

Rachelle is Co-Director of AnA Collaborations, and has choreographed, directed, and produced multidisciplinary works both on and off screen since 2015.

The artists are holding a series of open rehearsals and invite public attendance with social distancing and current covid protocols. Arrows and signage lead visitors from the Art Cottage to the beach; look for the team’s orange hats.

Feel free to watch, ask questions and take pictures during our rehearsals. Join us for a work-in-process showing on September 19th and 24th. Stay tuned for exact times and a link to register.

Humility : Drift is a dance taught to people by the landscape of Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline. It’s an experiment in building relationships with the more-than-human world. The title is inspired by the etymological relationship between “humility,” to lower oneself, and the Latin word “humus,” or soil.

Performers engage in prolonged observation of the ecosystem, allowing their observations to teach them the choreography of the site. The result is a series of solo and duet dances that manifest what it feels like to learn from, and be in relationship with, the park ecosystem.

The performance is also part of the artists’ effort to reckon with settler and diasporic backgrounds, the practice of land acknowledgement, environmental catastrophe, and a cultural crisis of empathy.

We honor the Indigenous people of the Salish Sea. We honor dxʷdəwʔabš and Tulalip people, past, present, and future, who care for this beach site. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from the brilliance of your homeland and share our experiences with others.

Humility: Drift schedule
  • Monday September 6, 1pm – 5pm
  • Saturday September 11th, 2pm – 6pm
  • Monday September 13th, 1pm – 5pm
  • Tuesday September 14th, 11am – 4pm
  • Monday September 20th, 1pm – 5pm

Performance: September 24, time TBD
Performance: October 9, time TBD

Humility: Drift is made possible through the City’s 1% for Public Art Program and 4Culture Cultural Facilities Grant.

September 8

Speaker: David Endicott

Topic: Music4Life provides donated and repaired musical instruments at no charge to public school districts for use by students in need.

Because Music4Life is a community-based activity, we guarantee that resources developed in any of those communities are used exclusively for the benefit of kids in those communities, as long as they are enrolled there. Music4Life Booster Clubs comprised of local community leaders help us operate each of our programs. https://www.music4life.org/

September 15
Speaker: Virginia McKenzie

Topic: Puget Sound Rotary Club Against Sex Trafficking

Description: To end human trafficking, we have to prevent it before it happens. The Initiative will focus on: Raising Awareness, Educating Children and Youth, Reducing Risk Factors that make children vulnerable and Stopping the Demand.

We encourage every Rotary Club to support local organizations working to end human trafficking to raise awareness about human trafficking, and to engage your community around this issue. For more information, please go to: https://rotaryendht.org

Speaker: Rachelle Nesta, New Beginnings Women Shelter

Description: New Beginnings’ mission is to empower survivors and mobilize community awareness and action to end domestic violence.

They are the only full-service agency in Seattle whose primary mission is to serve domestic violence survivors. With over 40 years of established history, New Beginnings has become a leading force in the movement to end domestic violence and has grown to include a full range of services for survivors. On average,

New Beginnings serves over 10,000 women, children, and men each year. More information can be found at: https://newbegin.org/

Pickleball game in Shoreline
September 29
Speaker: Roger BelAir

Topic: Pickleball in Prisons

Description: Pickleball— the fastest growing sport in the nation— and prisons. Yes, prisons! Roger introduced the game to jails/prisons from coast to coast —New York City to Corcoran, the prison in California where Charles Manson served time.

His efforts have been covered by the media: Everything from NPR to a radio station in Dubai. Audiences find it fascinating how the game is reducing violence and helping inmates.

“Sadly, most inmates in correctional institutions come from very difficult backgrounds. For much of their lives positive guidance has been limited. One of the many benefits of pickleball is that the game can be used as a metaphor for teaching ‘life skills’ such as being a good teammate, following the rules and thinking about consequences.”
