It's Goodbye to Goat Season at Midvale Gardens!

This weekend the Earthcraft goat herd wraps up their second environmental grant at Midvale Gardens (N 192nd St. and the Interurban Trail).

Our thanks go out to the City of Shoreline, Seattle City Light, and Diggin' Shoreline whose combined support has made this neighborhood improvement possible.

Stop by and watch their ruminant ways (four stomachs apiece) hour after hour turning invasive foliage into pellets of power!

COVID-19: how the risk changes for vaccinated people compared to unvaccinated people

Dr. Jeff Duchin, King County Health Officer
By Jeffrey Duchin, MD, Health Officer,
Public Health - Seattle and King County
Prof. Medicine/Infectious Diseases,
University of Washington

We hear/read a lot about "breakthrough" infections and the % of people getting or hospitalized or dying with CoV-19 that are vaccinated. But this tells us nothing about what is most important: how the risk changes for vaccinated people compared to unvaccinated people

To determine the risk, you need to know how frequently these outcomes occur in vaccinated and unvaccinated groups (the rates of disease in each group). To compare most accurately, we should compare vaccinated and unvaccinated people of similar ages (adjusting for age).

Age-adjusted CoV-19 rates for past 30 days in King County, WA:

Compared to fully-vaccinated people, those not fully vaccinated are:
  • 6 times more likely to test positive for COVID-19
  • 37 times more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19
  • 67 times more likely to die due to COVID-19 related illness

Dark line shows cases among the unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated
Light line shows "breakthrough" cases among the fully vaccinated

Not fully vaccinated:
In the recent Delta surge, the age-adjusted rate of CASES among people who are not fully vaccinated increased from 7 daily cases/100,000 people at the beginning of July to 77 daily cases/100,000 people as of August 17, an increase of 70 new cases per day per 100,000 people.

Fully vaccinated:
During this same period, the age-adjusted rate of CASES among fully vaccinated people increased from 1 daily case/100,000 people to 10 daily cases/100,000 people, an increase of 9 new cases per day/100,000 people.

King county hospitalization rates
Not vaccinated (dark line) vs vaccinated (light line)

Among not-fully-vaccinated people, age-adjusted HOSPITALIZATIONS  increased from 1/100,000 people/day to 7/100,000 people/day vs. an increase from 0.04/100,000/day to 0.2/100,000 people/day for the fully vaccinated.

Bottom line: CoV-19 vaccines are doing a terrific job protecting the vaccinated from CoV-19, especially for hospitalizations and death.

Update: New liners and floating covers for the Lake Forest Park reservoir

SPU crews installing the new liner. Photo courtesy SPU

The Lake Forest Park Reservoir is located in the City of Lake Forest Park and is part of Seattle Public Utilities' regional drinking water system. The reservoir has a floating cover that was installed in 2001 and designed to last about 20 years. Due to increased maintenance and repair work needed to keep the aging cover operational, SPU decided to replace it with a new floating cover.

The Lake Forest Park Reservoir Floating Cover Replacement Project

Over the past few months, the contractor has been installing liner along the bottom of the reservoir. The contractor has completed liner installation in the east cell and performed necessary inspection and testing. The liner in the west cell is expected to be complete in early September.

SPU crew rolling out the new liner. Photo courtesy SPU

This week, the contractor started installation of the floating cover and associated equipment in the east cell. Initiation and completion of floating cover installation in the west cell is dependent on the arrival of materials that are delayed due to supply chain disruptions associated with the pandemic.

In order to complete this work as quickly as possible, crews will be working on Saturday, September 4, 2021 as well as Monday, September 6 (Labor Day).

During construction the walking path that goes around the reservoir site will generally remain open and accessible. It may be temporarily blocked for up to two days at the end of construction when the contractor removes the temporary construction entrance.

Nearby roadways and paths may be temporarily blocked for short durations to accommodate equipment and materials moving in and out of the construction site. Further, there are no anticipated impacts for Horizon View Park visitors

You can sign-up to receive project updates online at www.seattle.gov/utilities/neighborhood-projects/lfp-reservoir-covering

Shoreline Police: Are these bills real or fake?

Guess: are these real or fake?

Are these bills real or fakes? Before you read the story, take a guess and read on to see if you're right.

On August 19, 2021, at 10:50pm, a deputy was called to a business located in the 20400 block of Aurora Ave N in Shoreline.

The clerk explained a black male had just tried to purchase cigarettes and numerous lottery tickets. He handed the clerk three $100 bills.

The clerk took the money, but the money didn’t feel right. As the clerk inspected the cash closely, the suspect got nervous, ran out of the store and left in a grey sedan. The suspect left the bogus bills behind.

So, at the beginning of the story, did you get it right? If you guessed these are fakes, you are correct. The deputy documented the incident and took the counterfeit money as evidence.

Real $100 bills will always have watermarks and security threads that are difficult to fake.

If you believe you have received counterfeit money, the U.S. Treasury advises you to contact your local law enforcement agency or Secret Service office.

Tracy Furutani, Campaign Kickoff for LFP City Council position 5

Tracy Furutani answers questions at kickoff
Tracy Furutani held his official Campaign Kickoff for LFP City Council position 5. Tracy highlighted the reasons for jumping into the race:
  • Climate: the city’s need to develop and implement a climate action plan.
  • Equity: City plans need to have a lens where all people of LFP are considered.
  • Accessibility: we need transparency and access to information, and ensure our city is an inclusive community.

The kickoff was outside, masks on, and socially distanced. Community musicians and local playwright David Farkas, and community actors entertained the group.

LFP residents shared their insights on Tracy and why they support him so strongly for his candidacy.

They spoke about Tracy’s science background, and his commitment to a focus on climate action and equity for the city. A resident shared Tracy’s long-term commitment to education as an instructor at North Seattle College teaching 25 years of climate science.

It was also mentioned that he serves on the board of Shorelake Arts, monitors local creeks with Streamkeepers, and was an Advisory Committee member with the LFP Water District where he volunteered in the Shoreline schools teaching water education and is currently helping them to update a Climate Action Plan.

Campaign event held outdoors with social distancing

The highlight was when Tracy spoke and had a question-and-answer period. Tracy answered several questions ranging from air quality monitoring along Bothell Way, to Prop. #1, and electric cars.

Tracy explained that electric cars are a good way to reduce carbon if the source of the electric energy is green. Not all electricity comes from a renewable source. He went on to explain that as we move forward to find solutions to reduce our carbon footprint, we also need to look through the lens of equity for solutions as not everyone can afford an electric car.

After the question-and-answer period, one LFP resident observed, “Tracy has the openness to listen to all members of Lake Forest Park and their varying perspectives and he has the background and the ability to dig deeply into whatever issue is before him. His answers did not just skim the surface, and I appreciated that.”

Tracy has lived in Lake Forest Park for 17 years. He sees being on the council as a chance to give back to the community.

“Lake Forest Park is a great place to live. I want to make sure that our future includes healthy growth without increasing our carbon footprint or losing what makes Lake Forest Park unique. I look forward to hearing from you during the campaign."

Shoreline Police arrest suspect in Aurora burglaries

One of the Shoreline burglaries. Photo courtesy KCSO

In July, Shoreline experienced a significant increase in commercial burglaries, particularly along Aurora.

In some cases, video surveillance showed two burglars breaking into businesses by smashing through a glass door or window and taking the cash registers.

Shoreline Police were able to identify a primary suspect who they believed to be living in a homeless encampment in North Seattle. On August 3, 2021, Shoreline Criminal Investigations Detectives conducted surveillance and located the suspect walking on Aurora Avenue in Seattle near North 130th.

With the assistance of Shoreline patrol deputies, the detectives were able to take the suspect into custody without incident while he was boarding a Metro bus headed to Shoreline.

The suspect was carrying a large backpack with burglary tools, including a glass breaking tool. He was booked into the King County Jail for 11 counts of Burglary in the 2nd degree and two counts of Attempted Burglary in the 2nd degree.

On several occasions the suspect returned the same night and re-entered businesses with another accomplice to steal additional items. The investigation is ongoing and Shoreline detectives have identified a second suspect.
