In the backyard: This is not a baby photo of S.T.

Sunday, August 22, 2021

The rumor that this is a baby photo of S.T. is simply not true. It is true that S.T. lives in the vicinity of Shoreline. (see Feral Creatures article)

This baby is in Jan Hansen's camera view. Besides, as a gently reared corvid he would never grow up to use the kind of language that S.T. does.

Virtual book launch

Tuesday, August 24, 2021, 7:00pm, Third Place Books is honored to host local author Kira Jane Buxton for the launch of FERAL CREATURES, the highly anticipated sequel to HOLLOW KINGDOM.

Kira will be joined in conversation by Liberty Hardy -- prolific reader, senior contributing editor for Book Riot, and host of the popular All the Books! podcast.

Art print
To celebrate, every book-bundled ticket purchased on Eventbrite will come with a limited edition, 11x17 art print (while supplies last) based on a scene from the book. You can see the full design here. hy TPB's graphic designer Stephen Crowe.

In person book signing

After Kira Jane Buxton's virtual launch of Feral Creatures on August 24th, she'll be signing in-person at the Lake Forest Park Farmer's Market on August 29th!

Any remaining prints will be available at Kira's in-person signing on Sunday, August 29th at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, 12-2pm.

About the new book

With FERAL CREATURES, Kira continues the adventures of S.T., the foulmouthed crowtagonist, in an even funnier, scarier cautionary tale of humankind’s impact on the fragility of the natural world.

From the wilds of Alaska to the outskirts of Seattle, FERAL CREATURES finds S.T. in an epic battle between the animal kingdom and a new mutant threat, all while protecting Dee, the last human on Earth.

In this stunning follow-up to HOLLOW KINGDOM, the animal kingdom's "favorite apocalyptic hero" is back with a renewed sense of hope for humanity, ready to take on a world ravaged by a viral pandemic.

When the world last checked-in with its favorite Cheeto addict, the planet had been overrun by flesh-hungry beasts, and nature had started re-claiming her territory from humankind.

S.T., the intrepid crow, alongside his bloodhound-bestie Dennis, had set about saving pets that had become trapped in their homes after humanity went the way of the dodo.

That is, until S.T. stumbled upon something so rare—and so precious—that he vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard what could, quite literally, be humanity's last hope for survival.

But in a wild world plagued by prejudiced animals, feather-raising environments, new threats so terrifying they make zombies look like baby bunnies, and a horrendous dearth of cheesy snacks, what's a crow to do?

Why, wing it on another big-hearted, death-defying adventure, that's what! Joined by a fabulous new cast of animal characters, S.T. faces many new challenges plus his biggest one yet: parenthood.

Case updates August 20, 2021 - why the vaccines were approved so quickly

Dr. Vin Gupta
Dr. Vin Gupta, critical care pulmonologist and faculty member of the at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, speaking to Nicolle Wallace on The Rachel Maddow Show August 3, 2021.

GUPTA: You know, there is in notion this (the vaccine) has been a rushed process. It's been anything other than that. What has been consolidated -- I get this question all the time, where, Doc, why did it take 12 months when it normally takes five to ten years? That's on the top of mind to your point amongst many people who have yet to vaccine.

It turns out, it's been all the non-science parts of the vaccine development waiting for money, waiting for people to enroll in the studies, waiting for the NIH to say you can go to the next phase.

All that bureaucratic non-scientific components of vaccine development have been consolidated as part of operation Warp Speed.

And so, that's why I think we need to take heart that the science hasn't cut corners at all. It's just been the bureaucracy of it. That's why it takes five years.

Zoom Rotary meeting Wednesday welcomes Srijan Chakroborty, Executive Director of the Hunger Intervention Program

By Victoria E. Stiles

Join in for a Zoom Rotary meeting Wednesday morning, August 25, 2021. Our meeting starts at 7:30 am with President Debbie Tarry and our cow-bell-ringing greeter and Zoom host, Clarita Bhat! E-mail contact@shorelinerotary.com for instructions.

Srijan Chakroborty, Executive Director of HIP.
In Washington State, 1 in 10 individuals struggle with hunger. 1 in 6 Washington kids live in a household that faces challenges in putting enough food on the table.

These grim statistics drive the passion behind the Hunger Intervention Program (HIP) and that of our our guest speaker, Srijan Chakroborty, Executive Director of HIP.

At HIP, they believe that healthy, culturally appropriate food is a human right and it is unacceptable that in the richest country on earth anyone should have to go hungry.

Their mission is to increase food security for underserved populations in North King County through nutritious meals, educational programs, and advocacy.

Their meal programs include weekend backpack programs, summer eats, senior meals, afterschool meal program and shelter meals. They provide classes and workshops on nutrition, cooking, gardening, and food justice.

Srijan holds a Master’s degree in Social Work. Before joining HIP, he was the Development and Communications Manager at The Sophia Way, an agency serving women experiencing homelessness.

He also has an MS in Computer Science and worked as a software engineer at Microsoft for nine years before deciding to switch completely to the social service sector.

When not at work, he enjoys spending time with his children, hiking in the mountains, listening to music, or reading a good book. Please give Srijan a warm Shoreline Rotary welcome!

Best Starts for Kids levy approval means critical support for children of King County

Saturday, August 21, 2021

King County Elections has certified the results of the August Primary Election, and Prop. 1 (better known as the Best Starts for Kids levy) has officially been approved with over 62% of the vote.

Over the past five years, Best Starts for Kids partners have provided critical support to over half a million babies, children, young people and families in King County.

The plan for Best Starts “2.0” is outlined in an Implementation Plan that Executive Constantine transmitted to the King County Council on July 28, 2021. If adopted, the plan will maintain current investments across main Best Starts for Kids strategies, and deepen investments to meet critical community needs, including goals to:
  • make childcare more accessible for low-income children and their families;
  • increase out-of-school time programming for school-age kids;
  • fund up to four new school-based health centers; and
  • expand education and career supports for youth and young adults as they transition to adulthood.

With the expanded resources of the Levy, we have the opportunity to see significant new investments in North King County. You can help make these happen!

Stay informed and stay involved as decisions are moving quickly. Subscribe to the BSK blog and newsletter, and follow @BestStartsKC on Facebook and Twitter to get the latest information on the Implementation Plan and future funding opportunities!

AG Ferguson: Foreclosure moratorium ended July 31, free counseling available statewide for at-risk homeowners

OLYMPIA — After the federal foreclosure moratorium ended on July 31, 2021 Attorney General Bob Ferguson is offering guidance and resources to Washington homeowners about the availability of housing counseling services.

Ferguson is encouraging homeowners need to act now to learn what post-forbearance options they may have based on the type of loan they have. Housing counselors can assist homeowners to navigate new federal rules and assistance programs that take effect at the end of August to help people keep their homes.

Homeowners may need help understanding their mortgage documents or what options they have before talking to their mortgage servicer. The Washington Homeownership Resource Center offers free or low-cost resources, including housing counseling, at https://www.homeownership-wa.org/ or by calling 1-877-894-HOME (4663).

New Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rules that take effect August 31 will require servicers to offer more post-forbearance options to homeowners. For some homeowners, these options could include:
  • Apply to have their loan interest rate reduced
  • Extend the term of their loan
  • Reduce their monthly paymentsServicers that fail to comply could be in violation of Washington’s Consumer Protection Act, which the Attorney General’s Office enforces.

“There are now many options available to homeowners in need of assistance so they don’t lose their homes,” Ferguson said. “Homeowners experiencing financial difficulties should contact a home counselor for free today. People have expanded options to get the assistance they need.”

Remains of Soldier killed during World War II to be buried in Shoreline

Tech Sgt Alfred F Turgeo
The remains of a Soldier killed during World War II will be interred at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church Columbarium, August 28, 2021.

Funeral services for Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. Alfred F. Turgeon will be performed by Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home, Seattle, preceding the interment.

The private ceremony will be attended by family members with honors by Starr Sutherland Jr. American Legion Post 227 from Shoreline.

A native of Ketchikan, Alaska, Turgeon was a pilot assigned to the 344th Bombardment Squadron, 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force.

On August 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Turgeon was serving as a radio operator, crashed after being hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire during Operation TIDAL WAVE, the largest bombing mission against the oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of Bucharest, Romania.

He was just 23 years old. Turgeon’s remains could not be identified, following the war, and were buried as Unknowns in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, PloieČ™ti, Prahova, Romania.

In 2017, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency began exhuming unknowns believed to be associated with unaccounted-for airmen from Operation TIDAL WAVE. The remains were sent to the DPAA Laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, for examination and identification.

Turgeon was accounted for by the DPAA on January 13, 2021, after his remains were identified using dental, anthropological, mitochondrial DNA and autosomal DNA analysis.

His name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at the Florence American Cemetery, an American Battle Monuments Commission site in Impruneta, Italy, along with others still missing from World War II. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for.

For additional information about Tech. Sgt. Turgeon, go to https://www.dpaa.mil/News-Stories/News-Releases/PressReleaseArticleView/Article/2472558/airman-accounted-for-from-world-war-ii-turgeon-a/

Inslee issues two proclamations for facial coverings, vaccine requirements

Gov. Jay Inslee
Gov. Jay Inslee on Friday updated and extended two emergency proclamations that expand the vaccine requirement and the statewide face covering requirement.

The governor made the announcement at a press conference earlier this week.

"It has been a long pandemic, and our students and teachers have borne their own unique burdens throughout,” Inslee said at the announcement.
“This virus is increasingly impacting young people, and those under the age of 12 still can’t get the vaccine for themselves.
"We won’t gamble with the health of our children, our educators and school staff, nor the health of the communities they serve.”

Proclamation 20-25 is amended to adopt the most recent face covering order issued by the Secretary of Health, Order 20-03.4. Under this order, every person in Washington must wear a face covering when they are in a place that is generally accessible to any person from outside their household, subject to specific exceptions and exemptions.

Proclamation 21-14 (Vaccination Requirement) is expanded to include all employees, on-site contractors and on-site volunteers at all public and private K-12 schools, public and private 2- and 4-year institutions of higher education, and early learning and child care programs serving children from multiple households.

The statewide mask requirement goes into effect on Monday, August 23, 2021. Amendment to Proclamation 21-14 (Vaccination Requirement) is effective immediately.

Prosecutor asks that Shoreline hate crime defendant be held in jail on $25,000 bond

Thursday afternoon August 19, 2021 King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg announced a first court appearance for a defendant who was charged in April for a hate crime involving her neighbor in Shoreline.

That morning the King County Sheriff's Office sent them an investigation into a felony violation of a no-contact order that occurred Wednesday and, Satterberg says "we acted promptly."

At today's first appearance, the prosecutor's office asked a judge to hold the defendant in jail on $25,000 bail, arguing she is a danger to the community based on the escalating behavior, her pending hate crime case, and the victim’s fear of the defendant.

In a related story, FBI Seattle has launched a social media awareness campaign on @FBISeattle and currently is running advertisements at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and on Seattle public transit, including buses and trains, to encourage the public to report hate crimes to the FBI.

Letter to the Editor: Our Human Crisis

To the Editor:

It is disappointing, revolting and sad beyond words that the crisis we are facing on this beautiful planet  has been misnamed in order to make it look natural, like our planet is doing it to us but this is far from the truth. Our Mothering planet is reacting to us What if your children were overflowing water in the tub, or swallowing  drano to see what it tasted like … or setting fire to your home. You would react.  Earth is reacting but can only react to these problems we’ve created with extremes, like earthquakes, hurricanes, flash floods, drought and pandemics.

Look at a photo of our planetary home from space …  at night …  to see how we as humans have overwhelmed other life forms. Artificial light is everywhere!. Huge forests have been cut down and replanted with no idea of how Trees and plants communicate underground and create sustaining life.  Concrete covers too much Soil, the element naturally allowing Earth to breathe wholeness. We can not live without water but humans haven’t figured out how to create this Life sustaining element.
Humans seem to prefer human creations.

Here in Shoreline our city wants to be called Green and pretends that it cares about the changes happening as they give developers permission to cut down more and more Trees. They say we expect developers to replace those elder Trees with even more Trees. But the elder Trees create shade now and store carbon, the baby Trees being planted won't create shade which lowers temperatures, nor store carbon, as developers race to build more condos or apartments They will not protect our current environment for probably 30 years.   Who will protect the children?

Dept of Natural Resources fire helicopter and crew at the Twenty-Five Mile Fire

Photo by Zach Fuecker, Ahtanum Type 2IA crew

We love the smell of lake water in the morning.
We have so far escaped the big fires here in Puget Sound but east of the mountains is a very different story.

This photo shows a Department of Natural Resources helicopter and ground crew. The helicopter has just scooped up water from Lake Chelan and dropped it along the fire line.

The Twenty-Five Mile Fire was first reported at 3:45pm on August 15, 2021, and is burning on the south shore of Lake Chelan near Twenty-Five Mile Creek. The fire is under joint jurisdiction of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest, Washington Department of Natural Resources and Chelan County Fire District 7.

It has burned 9.800 acres so far. The fire may continue to move to the south and east. Rotor and fixed-wing air resources continued attack on the fire throughout Thursday. Aircraft used local bodies of water, including Lake Chelan, to fill. Recreational boaters were warned of aircraft takeoff and landings and keep a safe distance.

Some roads are closed and some areas have been evacuated.

Lutheran Community Services (LCS) Northwest resettles Afghan families in Puget Sound

Lutheran Community Services (LCS) Northwest has aided in settling 24 refugees from Afghanistan last week, and are anticipating settling 17 by the end of this week.

The need for support for these populations is rising quickly. Throughout decades, LCS Northwest has welcomed and resettled over 45,000 refugees in the Northwest.

In the past 3 years, the nonprofit organization has helped almost 700 people with Special Immigrant visas (SIVs) resettle. SIVs are provided to Afghan nationals, including those who worked as allies with the United States Armed Forces as translators and interpreters for at least twelve months, and have a written recommendation from a commanding officer.

LCS Northwest offers housing navigation and other basic needs support to help these families and allies with their urgent needs. Our staff work quickly to surround each SIV with basic needs like housing, food, clothing, transportation, and monetary assistance. LCS Northwest is receiving an overwhelming number of requests for assistance from community members hoping to bring Afghan family members to safety.

The best way to show support is to donate: Please go to this donation page for credit cards. (LCSNW.org and then click on the orange “donate” button in the upper right corner.)
