Letter to the Editor: Don't hesitate to call 911

To the Editor:

As one who has been there, don’t hesitate to call 911. My event was a little over a year ago at around 3am. Shoreline fire was at the house in minutes. They talk to you pleasantly and calmly while they go about their business. They told me that I needed to go to the hospital and would take me.

I got my first and hope only ride in one of those red vans. On the way they assured me we had done the right thing calling 911 and they were pleased to have been able to come and help me and don’t hesitate to call. Doctors confirmed I had a heart attack.--

Photo: The day started with wildfire haze

Smoky sunrise photo by Mike Remarcke

We started the day Friday with smokey skies obscuring the Cascades. The smoke persisted during the day and into the evening.

When the sun looks like this, you know there's something in the air - smoke, fog, smog, haze, etc.

The thick layer of smoke was noticeable but not unbearable for short exposures, except for those with impaired breathing.

The irony is that the unhealthy air protected us from the high temperatures predicted for today.

By sunset, the haze obscured the Olympics but left the ferry in view and blazed a fiery path across the water.

Census Bureau: Economic hardship declined in households with children as Child Tax Credit payments arrived

Friday, August 13, 2021

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a drop in the number of households with children that reported food insufficiency and trouble paying household expenses may be linked to the child tax credit checks issued last month, according to new Household Pulse Survey (HPS) results.

The Internal Revenue Service last month (July 15, 2021) began issuing a monthly Advance Child Tax Credit (CTC) to families with children.

About 35 million eligible families received the first monthly payment of up to $300 for each child age 5 and under and up to $250 for each child ages 6 to 17. Payments will continue monthly through December.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s experimental HPS collected survey responses just before and just after the arrival of the first checks.

The survey shows introduction of the CTC coincided with a drop in food insufficiency in households with children. It also showed that in those households, there was a drop in difficulty paying weekly expenses.

Stage 2 burn ban throughout King county

A Stage 2 burn ban goes into effect immediately for King County. King County’s ban is in coordination with the King County Fire Chiefs Association and Fire Marshals, which extends the ban into cities.

During a Stage 2 burn ban, any outdoor fire such as a backyard fire pit or campfire using chopped firewood or charcoal is prohibited. Under the ban, any person with a recreational fire who fails to take immediate action to extinguish or discontinue when ordered or notified to do so can be charged with, up to and including, a misdemeanor.

Manufactured portable outdoor devices are allowed, including barbeques and patio warmers that are used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Approved fuel devices - including those that rely on charcoal, natural gas or propane gas – are also allowed. Ricketts asks residents to please use caution when disposing of charcoal remains.

Extended periods of abnormally high temperatures have increased the fuel load in the vegetation in our community. The large fire in Oregon and other fires in Washington have stretched wildfire fighting resources throughout the region.

If residents smoke, they should exercise extreme caution with their ashes or when they’re extinguishing cigarettes. The county asks residents to be diligent and respectful of their neighbors, and to remember this is a demanding time for first responders.

Shoreline Police: Too impaired to walk well, but figured it was ok to drive

Imagine being so impaired you can hardly walk, yet you choose to get behind the wheel of a car. It's the decision this driver appears to have made.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021 at 7:18am, deputies were dispatched to a collision in Shoreline at the 2000 block of N 153rd Pl. The reporting party told dispatchers that a red sedan had just hit a white car in front of his home.

Another caller told us that the driver of the red sedan was trying to leave the scene. However, due to extensive damage, the red sedan didn't make it far.

Deputies arrived and found a white Toyota Corolla with heavy rear-end damage on the east side of the roadway. They also saw a red Corolla with serious front-end damage parked nearby, occupied by the driver.

The driver of the red sedan appeared very upset. As they spoke to him, deputies detected an odor of alcohol. The male was crying and refused to answer any of their questions. As a precaution, medics arrived to evaluate the driver.

Once aid arrived, the male got out of the vehicle but was very unstable and needed help walking. The driver refused any help from medics. Due to the strong odor of alcohol, the male was arrested.

After the man refused a voluntary Field Sobriety Test, he was transported to the precinct for DUI processing. Once at the precinct, deputies had to help the driver walk as he was continually losing his balance.

The male refused a breathalyzer test, so deputies requested a blood warrant. Once the warrant was granted, deputies called the fire department to assist with the blood draw. During the process, the male became uncooperative and began shouting and kicking.

The blood draw was eventually successful. The sample has been sent to the Washington State Toxicology lab for analysis.

The driver was booked in to SCORE (South Correctional Entity) Jail on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence.

Letter to the Editor: If you think you are having a heart attack - never drive yourself to the hospital

To the Editor:

Regarding the article, “Lesser-Known Heart Attack Warning Signs,”

Absolutely, jaw pain can be a warning sign of heart attack. However, PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE YOURSELF to the hospital if you think you are having a heart attack.

CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. The medics are more than happy to drive you to the hospital and provide life-saving care on the way. The drive can literally kill you, or other folks on the road, and driving all the way to Bellevue could be catastrophic under the circumstances.

BTW, doctors and medics never think you are wasting their time.

This article needs a huge red flag attached to it.

Thank you to SAN for all you do for our community!

Shoreline Police: Catalytic converter thieves just get bolder and bolder

On Friday, August 6, 2021 at 7:36am, a deputy was called to take a theft report at the 3200 block of NE 145th St in Shoreline.

A company employee reported that someone had stolen the catalytic converter off one of the company trucks.

A review of the security surveillance video shows that the theft occurred on 08/05/2021 around 8:50pm.

A white male can be seen exiting a grey, Honda Accord. He is carrying a Sawzall and looks around, to make sure no one is watching, and then crawls under the truck.

Within minutes, the man is on the move again. He runs back to his vehicle carrying the stolen converter, throws it inside the car, jumps in the driver's seat and the car takes off.

The suspect vehicle looks to be a newly purchased gray Honda Accord with an unidentifiable dealership paper plate on the rear of the car.

Three suspects were seen occupying the vehicle.

The male driver appeared to be about 6'0" tall and in his late 30s to 50s.

The front passenger appeared to be a dark-skinned female wearing a white spaghetti strap tank top. Sitting in the back passenger seat behind her was an unidentifiable individual wearing a white t-shirt.

If you have any information on this case or can identify the suspects or the vehicle, please contact our non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and reference case #c21024527.

Lesser-Known Heart Attack Warning Signs

Story and photos by John Boril

I recently hosted a small backyard barbecue for a few friends. After an entire day of cooking, entertaining and doing dishes, I really wanted to go to bed. But there was an odd pain in my lower jaw that seemed to get worse by the minute.

Ibuprofen didn’t help. As the pain continued to grow into the early morning hours, I finally went online to see if I could figure out what was wrong. Could it be some weird Covid-19 side effect? A problem with a tooth? Cancer? (My go-to diagnosis for any pain, no matter how small.)

What I never considered was that this might be a warning sign of a heart attack. I knew that in addition to chest pains, pain radiating down the left arm might indicate a heart attack. But a pain in the jaw? Never heard of it.

So I was surprised when my online search yielded numerous references to jaw pain and heart attacks. On the American Heart Association website I learned that in addition to chest pain, other potential heart attack warning signs include:
  • Discomfort in other areas of the upper body, including pain in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Nausea, lightheadedness, or breaking out in a cold sweat.

That was enough to send me to Kaiser Permanente’s 24 Hour Consulting Nurse line. After asking a few questions about my pain, the nurse confirmed that it could be a heart attack and urged me to come in.

A short while later, doctors at Kaiser’s Bellevue Medical Center confirmed that I was indeed having a “myocardial infarction” and immediately set things in motion to fix it.

Within an hour or so — time becomes a little fuzzy at this point — stents were being installed in two of my arteries, one of which was completely blocked and the other nearly so.

I can’t say enough about the good treatment I got from my caregivers at Kaiser and next door at Overlake Medical Center where they wheeled me for the actual procedure and recovery.

One thing that struck me over the next couple of days was how many times I was told by my doctors and nurses that it was such a fortunate thing that I came in instead of simply toughing out the “jaw pain.”

That left me wondering: how do you know if a pain in the jaw is a sign of heart attack? Or just a pain in the jaw. The bottom line is, you don’t. It took an EKG and blood tests to determine for sure what was really happening.

But that still leaves the question of how to decide when to take another painkiller and when to call the professionals? On its website, the Harvard Medical School advises that one of the questions doctors ask about this kind of pain is, “Have you had it before?” It’s the question I asked myself and the one that caused me to pick up the phone. I knew this was a type of jaw pain I had never experienced.

Still, I feared that if it wasn’t a heart attack, the doctors might think I was wasting their time. Not so. Even before getting my test results, they repeatedly assured me that coming in was the right thing to do. Also, if it hadn’t been a heart attack, it easily could have been some other serious condition that needed attention.

Finally, the American Heart Association notes that while chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom in both men and women, women are somewhat more likely than men to experience the lesser-known warning symptoms, particularly shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain.

But each case is unique. I never did have chest pain, so that pain in the jaw was my only warning. And I definitely learned the lesson that any unusual pain is worth getting checked out right away.
