Attorney General Ferguson secures criminal conviction for illegal ivory trafficking

Illegal ivory photo courtesy State of WA
Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that a King County antique business and one of its owners pleaded guilty to trafficking in species threatened with extinction under a voter-approved initiative banning the sale or transfer of products made from certain endangered species.

Following an investigation, state and federal Fish and Wildlife officers executed a search warrant on Ming’s Asian Gallery and Antiques, then located in Redmond.

They found more than 100 items suspected of containing endangered animal species. Investigators sent a sample of eight of these suspect items to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s forensic laboratory for genetic testing.

Testing confirmed that six of the eight were illegal to sell or trade — five of the items were made out of elephant ivory, and one was made of sea turtle shell.

Investigators also seized sales records and documents from the business, which included information regarding the Washington Animal Trafficking Act — evidence that the defendants were aware of the law’s restrictions on selling prohibited items.

As opioid overdoses climb, state programs prevent drugs from falling into the wrong hands

By Annie Blake-Burke

The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded the opioid epidemic in Washington, causing a "Syndemic," says Jessica Blose, the state opioid treatment authority and manager of behavioral health clinical support at the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA).

While communities and businesses are opening up, the pandemic has left vulnerable populations more vulnerable, disrupted treatment and support systems, and left Washington residents isolated. Those factors contribute to higher risk for substance misuse and overdoses, Blose says.

Earlier this year, the Department of Health released data showing that there had been 835 overdose deaths in the first six months of 2020, up from the 607 deaths reported in the first half of 2019. Additionally, deaths from Fentanyl (often found in counterfeit pills made to look like prescription opioids) more than doubled in that time frame.

Prevention programs

These two prevention programs in Washington aim to prevent opioid addiction and overdose.

1) The MED-Project, at pharmacies statewide, makes it easy for patients to dispose of their leftover prescription drugs at a kiosk or drop box.

Residents can enter their ZIP code at MED-Project.org to find a location near them or order a free medication mail back envelope. MED-Project is a program managed by the Washington State Department of Health and is supported by the Health Care Authority.

2) The HCA also plans to expand an innovative safe storage program this October, to give free locking bags to patients who receive opioid prescriptions. Patients will be asked to store their medication in the locking bags and make a pledge to do so.

The program, in partnership with dozens of pharmacies across the state, has been piloted with much success, and is part of the HCA’s opioid misuse prevention campaign, Starts with One.

Stopping misuse before it starts

These preventive programs both address the opioid epidemic “upstream,” Blose says — keeping medication out of the hands of people who weren’t prescribed them.

Removing unused medications from homes or locking them up can significantly reduce the risk of misuse and overdose. About 75% of opioid misuse begins when someone takes a medication that wasn't prescribed to them, usually from a friend or family member.

In the Garden Now: Perennial Daylilies

Story and photos by Victoria Gilleland

A plethora of daylily cultivars are available.

If you have a sunny spot in your garden you can probably grow a clump or two of spectacular daylilies.

Most daylily varieties need a fair amount of sun in order to thrive.

An amazing assortment of colors and sizes awaits the gardener.

Flower size varies from 2 inches to 9 inches.

Plants may be compact at about 10 inches high to very large at over 6 feet tall.

There's a size for just about any garden!

Blossom colors include white to deep shades of reddish purple and can be found in near black, purples, pinks, oranges, creams, pastels, red and citrus shades and combinations of these colors. Many choices!

Add some summer color with a daylily clump or two!

Thanks to Leanne and Mark Gallison for allowing me to photograph the beautiful daylilies pictured here in their Lake Forest Park garden.

Fatality collision on Aurora Friday evening

Approximate location of fatality collision on Aurora. 145th is the border between Seattle and Shoreline.

The driver of a Honda sedan died Friday night, July 23, 2021 after he rear-ended a semi-truck on Aurora Ave N.

At around 10:45pm, a King County Sheriff’s Deputy reported a large group of illegal street racers driving near the Shoreline/Seattle city limits.

The driver of a Honda sedan in that group was travelling southbound on Aurora Ave N, and made a U-turn just south of N 145th St in Seattle.

When the driver pulled into northbound traffic, he rear-ended a semi-truck that was stopped for a traffic light. Shoreline Fire Department and Seattle Fire Department coordinated to extricate the driver from the sedan.

Medics attempted life-saving measures, but the 21-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

Detectives from the Seattle Police Department Traffic Collision Investigation Squad responded to the scene to investigate. Preliminary information suggests excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Shoreline Police: We got him but not before he damaged a Shoreline coffee stand

In the end, we got him but not before he damaged a Shoreline coffee stand.

On Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 4:05am, Shoreline deputies responded to a commercial alarm at the 14500 block of Aurora Ave N.

The 9-1-1 caller stated that he had heard an alarm going off at the coffee stand, then saw a white male running off southbound, carrying a white blanket.

The suspect ran to a nearby business and attempted to smash the window using a bottle. When the window didn't break, he ran to a nearby apartment complex but was chased off by security.

When our deputies arrived, they found a broken window at the coffee stand and a baseball-sized rock inside the business.

As deputies searched the area for the suspect, a witness told them he was at a nearby bus stop.

The suspect was arrested. Once in custody, witnesses confirmed that the male was the same individual running from the coffee stand.

The owner of the coffee stand showed deputies the business surveillance footage.

The video confirmed the suspect in custody was the same individual responsible for breaking into the business.

The suspect was transported and booked into the King County Jail on the charge of Commercial Burglary in the 2nd Degree.

He also had an outstanding, $10,000 warrant in Seattle for assault.

King County has purchased the former Clarion Inn in Auburn, the fifth hotel purchase through the Health through Housing Initiative.

King County Executive Dow Constantine joined Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus and other guests at a news conference today to announce the $11.8 million purchase of the hotel, which will soon provide housing for up to 102 people experiencing homelessness.

"With this acquisition another 100 people will be able to come in off the street, as this partnership with Mayor Backus and Auburn will set another piece of the puzzle to ending chronic homelessness in King County," said Executive Constantine.
"Our approach is straightforward - practical and humane - and we’re thrilled to be able to offer more people in South King County the chance at a fresh start. We’re thankful to the City of Auburn and the Auburn business community for stepping up to help people out of homelessness and into a clean, safe, dignified place of their own - with the support to stay housed."

"We are excited by the opportunity this facility creates to support Auburn’s unsheltered community and bridge the gap for our region’s permanent supportive housing needs," said Auburn Mayor Nancy Backus. "We look forward to working closely with the county as we move forward in determining a service provide that can best meet the needs of the residents at this location."

The former Clarion Inn in Auburn is located at 9 16th Street Northwest and is conveniently located near transportation options and other services. It was constructed in 1998 and contains 102 units.

The Health through Housing program provides people experiencing, and at risk of, chronic homelessness with safe, single-room housing. The building will serve initially as emergency supportive housing and will later be converted to permanent supportive housing.

In addition to a room to call their own, the hotel will offer residents 24/7 staffing and onsite supports to help very vulnerable people regain health and stability. A competitive process will determine the onsite service provider before the facility is operational later this year.

As with all Health through Housing initiative hotel purchases, King County worked closely with local leaders to complete the purchase, coordinating with leaders from the city of Auburn.
