In the Garden Now: Voodoo Lily

Voodoo Lily
Story and photo
by Victoria Gilleland

Voodoo Lily is one of the more unusual plants in our garden.

Ours are planted near the street so many passersby stop to ask about the unusual flowers.

The flower is made up of a spathe and a spadex and is similar in structure to a calla lily.

The spadex is over 20 inches long in this case. The flower could easily be mistaken for a big purple leaf.

The scent is anything but sweet. On a warm day the aroma is much like that of a rotting carcass.

Not wonderful perhaps from a human perspective but just right for attracting flies and other carrion type pollinators to this plant.

Flowers typically last for about a week so the scent is not a problem for long.

If you look closely at my photo you’ll see a fly perched on the right side of this flower. Looks to me like he’s getting ready to do his pollinator job!

Enjoy Mother Nature’s diverse offerings in the garden.

(Dracunculus vulgaris)

SU Girls G04 Tango soccer team win U-17 RCL Championship

Seattle United’s Girls G04 Tango soccer team put in a dominant performance this Spring 2020/21 season in Washington Youth Soccer’s GU17 Division III Regional Club League soccer competition.

They finished the season first in the league, with a record of 13-2-0, earning the title of Champions.

At one point, they were on a 12-match winning streak, and would have been favorites to win the State tournament. Alas, many hopes and dreams were dashed by the Covid-19 pandemic, with no State Cup this year.

Father's Day, Sunday June 20, 2021

Instead of purchased gifts, consider spending time with your father. Even better, offer to do tasks like home or garden maintenance, shopping, whatever might be something of a time or physical challenge for your dad.

And please don't forget the men who have been important in your life, whether they are biologically related to you or not!

Looking over the fence: 148th Light Rail Station construction

It's hard - not to mention dangerous - to get a good look at the Lynnwood Link construction as you travel I-5. Mostly the view is of a barren construction zone, miles long.

But the supports for the light rail tracks are visible almost the entire length of Shoreline. Some are finished and some are the wooden forms for the concrete.

The track by the 148th station dramatically goes right over the top of the 145th freeway overpass. There will be trains going right over our heads.

The parking garage is well underway.

The 148th station is built on the site of a small park and ride between the freeway and 5th NE. It extended several blocks north.

If you drive at night, be prepared for closures around station areas and access roads the length of the construction. Most work is performed from 10pm to 4:30am

Adventures of an icebreaker: Sea trials

Adjusting the keeper turnbuckles on the starboard hook.

Photos by Deborah Heldt Cordone, AUXPA1

The USCGC Healy first came to our attention when Jan Hansen photographed it overnighting off our section of the Puget Sound. She discovered the Healy's Facebook page. We contacted them and received permission to publish their photos and tell their story.

Previously, the Healy tested their new engine and practiced refueling. Now on to sea trials.

"During the recent Sea Trials, deck crew and damage control had the opportunity to perform several anchoring evolutions in preparation for Healy’s northern voyage.

"A successful anchoring evolution is dependent on several factors including environmental conditions, depth of water and other considerations.

"Anchoring is a dynamic and fluid evolution and safety always comes first."

We live on Puget Sound - but they live in Puget Sound. When the ship is considered seaworthy, they will be off to the Arctic. And we'll be with them.

Kenmore residents speak about racism experienced in the community in virtual session open to all

Have you noticed racism here in our Kenmore neighborhood?

On Saturday June 26, 2021, 10am - 11:30am there is an opportunity to hear directly from Kenmore neighbors of color about the racism they have experienced and witnessed.

Then, on Saturday, July 10, 10am - 11:30am we all gather again to brainstorm solutions.

Many white residents believe that our town is largely free from such harmful incidents, but we are not the targets. We don’t have to double check our tail lights before we drive or make sure we have our receipt before we walk out of the store. We don’t have to be concerned about being harassed or attacked on a walk in our own neighborhood.

BIPOC folks are all too aware of the racism that exists in Kenmore. When they take the courage to speak out, we can listen without judgment or discounting or minimizing their lived experiences.

Let’s make our neighborhoods safe for everyone… through listening and acting, together.

Register here for the free sessions, led by Jolene Jang, Culture Explorer and organized by Northshore Social Justice Action Group

AG Ferguson: Google will pay more than $423,000 over repeated violations of Washington campaign finance law

OLYMPIA — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today Google will pay $423,659.76 to Washington’s Public Disclosure Transparency Account for violating the state’s campaign finance disclosure law, which Washingtonians adopted by initiative in 1972.

Washington’s voter-approved Fair Campaign Practices Act requires political advertisers to retain records related to political ads because the public has a right to inspect the records, including the cost of the ad, the sponsor, and the person paying for the advertisement. Ferguson’s lawsuit followed Google’s failure to retain and disclose state political ad records.

This is the second time Ferguson has taken legal action against Google for violating Washington’s voter-approved law on political advertising.

In June 2018, the Attorney General’s Office filed a lawsuit against Google for similar conduct. Ferguson’s 2018 lawsuit resulted in Google paying a $200,000 judgment and an additional $17,000 to reimburse the state’s attorney fees. This case involves approximately one-third the amount of ad expenditures as the 2018 lawsuit. In this case, Google is paying double that judgment amount, in addition to attorney fees.

“Google is one of the largest corporations in the world, and should be able to figure out how to follow our campaign finance laws,” Ferguson said. “Today’s judgment is twice as high as the one Google paid in 2018. Repeat violators of Washington’s voter-approved campaign transparency laws will be held accountable.”

Lake Forest Park Accessory Dwelling Unit survey

Accessory dwelling unit
The Lake Forest Park Planning Commission is currently reviewing our City's Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) code to determine if changes to this code could benefit our community more.

We have created this survey to gather input from you.

Note, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a small, self-contained residential unit or apartment located on the same lot as an existing single-family home.

An ADU may be created as a separate unit within an existing home (such as in an attic or basement); an attached addition to the home (such as a separate apartment unit with separate entrance); or in a separate, detached structure on the lot (such as a converted garage).

Please click on the link below and submit your completed survey by June 30.

Washington State Patrol Chief Batiste asks for public’s help in rock throwing incidents in Seattle

Seattle - The Washington State Patrol continues to respond to incidents of rocks and other items being thrown from overpasses at passing vehicles.

There have been 75 incidents this year, with six people being injured in the last two and a half weeks.

Chief John R. Batiste said, “Throwing rocks and debris at moving vehicles is not just against the law, it can be deadly dangerous. We are asking for the public’s help. Somebody out there knows something that can help us stop this before we suffer a loss.
"Please call 911 if you have any information about who is doing this. Highway safety is everybody’s responsibility. Working together, we can keep our Washington highways safe.”

It is imperative that our citizens traveling in the downtown Seattle area call 9-1-1 if any pedestrians are observed whether they are throwing rocks or not. Provide a description, location and action that is occurring as accurately as possible.

This is a dangerous crime that can result in charges ranging from a misdemeanor to a felony.

This is a high priority occurrence and efforts will continue until we locate and arrest those that are responsible.

Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Inslee announces incentives for vaccinated veterans, military and staff, and their families

Gov. Inslee adds veterans to vaccine lottery
Gov. Jay Inslee announced “A Heroes Thanks” vaccine incentive program on Thursday for Washington's military and staff, veterans and their families who have been vaccinated through the Department of Defense, the VA or the National Guard.

Starting July 20, 2021 through the Washington State Lottery, eligible Washingtonians can win cash prizes of $100,000 in the first two weeks, Amazon gift cards worth $250, state parks gift cards worth $100, and the final week will have a $250,000 cash prize.

"We are so grateful for these service members, veterans, their families and those who work for the military for their service to our country," Inslee said at a press conference Thursday. "And we are grateful that more and more people are taking care of others by getting vaccinated."

The announcement came two weeks after the rollout of the "Shot of a Lifetime" lottery sweepstakes. Before the incentives were announced, the Department of Health observed a fall off in vaccination rates that began to reverse after the announcement, prompting an expansion of available incentives.

However, when "Shot of a Lifetime" was first announced, data-sharing issues on the part of the federal government made it difficult to include names of veterans, military members and staff, and their families to be included in the drawings. But through innovative collaboration, Washington can now offer incentives to those who serve our state and country, through their work and by getting a life-saving vaccine.

The incentives will be funded with the same federal COVID relief dollars that fund the vaccine lottery. And the Department of Defense will circulate a webform for eligible residents to fill out with the information needed to be entered in the incentives.

The governor was also joined by Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler Thursday to announce incentives and reimbursements for provider outreach to their unvaccinated patients. With medical providers being the most trusted source of information on vaccines for the public, their education on the safety and efficacy of vaccines is crucial to the state’s fight to control the virus.

Following the Healy: Adventures of an icebreaker

Here we can see the helicopter hovering over the flight deck as they prepare for a Helicopter In-Flight Refueling (HIFR). Photo by LTJG Colin Fenster

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy was recently in our waters testing out a new engine after a year long refurbishment. They were unusual for us in that they anchored overnight.

The Landing Signal Officer (yellow shirt) directs a Vertical Replenishment (VERTREP). In this instance we practiced by using 150 pounds of fenders while the helicopter remains in a hover.

They are an icebreaker, getting ready for a trip through the Arctic. They also have a Facebook page and great articles.

We watch so many different types of vessels coming and going past our Puget Sound shore. I thought it would be fun to follow one of them on their journey. I contacted the Healy and they were delighted.

Here is a Helicopter In-Flight Refueling in action! You can see the Landing Signal Officer (yellow shirt) telling the helicopter to remain in a hover while the rest of the people on the flight deck handle the fuel hose. Photo by LTJG Colin Fenster

So we'll be riding along with them.

On June 4, 2021 after testing the motor off Shoreline, they were at the Air Station in Port Angeles.

A special shout out to U.S. Coast Guard Air Station / SFO Port Angeles for engaging in flight operations with us last week! We really appreciated your time and professionalism while we qualified new personnel in preparation for our upcoming deployment.

Shoreline Community College Dental Clinic relocates to University of Washington Health Sciences Center - but low cost services are still available for local residents

A new option for comprehensive, affordable oral care from two well-regarded dental education providers is now available in Seattle, thanks to a partnership between Shoreline Community College’s Dental Hygiene program and the University of Washington (UW) School of Dentistry.

Patients can seamlessly access expanded oral health services at the UW School of Dentistry facility, receiving care from both dentistry and dental hygiene students, under the respective supervision of experienced UW and Shoreline Community College faculty.

The two schools have been offering low-cost services together in a teaching clinic environment since 2020, but now the Shoreline Community College Dental Hygiene Clinic will operate exclusively at the UW School of Dentistry as of June 28, 2021.

“After more than 50 years on the Shoreline campus, we are thrilled to offer our quality oral hygiene clinical services to patients at one of the top dental schools in the world, UW School of Dentistry,” said Shoreline Community College President Cheryl Roberts.

“While our location is changing, our philosophy remains the same: to provide educational excellence to our students and compassionate care to our patients. This partnership offers both Shoreline and UW students additional opportunities to expand their skills and expertise, while providing affordable oral health care to the community,” Roberts added.

Teaching clinics typically offer a team care approach, with advanced students working closely with experienced registered and licensed faculty practitioners and offer a range of services at reduced cost. While this model of care is not new, two schools partnering to offer complementary care in the same space is unique.

The Shoreline Community College Dental Hygiene Clinic closed its doors on June 14 and will reopen at the UW Health Sciences Center in Seattle’s Montlake neighborhood on June 28.

The fees for Shoreline’s dental hygiene services (including x-rays, deep cleanings, sealants, restorations) will remain the same and complement the dental services offered by the UW School of Dentistry (such as fillings, dentures, root canals, extractions).

The School of Dentistry Teaching Clinic is located in the UW Health Sciences Center at 1959 NE Pacific Street in Seattle. The Clinic is easily accessible by bus, light rail, or car and paid parking is available.

To make a dental appointment, contact the UW School of Dentistry at 206-616-6996 or visit dental.washington.edu/patient. (Existing Shoreline patients may continue to call 206-546-4711).

Shoreline Police: car prowls at Shoreline Stadium June 14

Car prowl #2. Photo taken by witness.

In the time it took for a victim in Shoreline to realize her credit cards had been stolen, the suspect had already used it at a Bellevue grocery store. All of it took place in the span of just 45 minutes.

On Monday, June 14, 2021, a deputy was dispatched to Shoreline Stadium in the 18600 block of 5th Ave NE, next to the Shoreline Center.

The car prowl victim told deputies she arrived at 5:30pm to walk the track. When she returned to her car 45 minutes later, she found her car window smashed.

In addition to an $1150 loss in personal property, the suspect took her identification and credit cards, which resulted in unauthorized charges at a Bellevue grocery store. Deputies took a report from the victim and gave her a case number.

The following day, we were contacted by a witness to another car prowl in the same parking lot. This time two people broke into a red SUV. The witness stated that around 5:40pm that same day, he and his wife were at the stadium, and when they saw this happening, they took photos, which they shared with us.

One of the suspects (shown above) is described as a thin male, approximately 6’2 in height, wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants. At this time, there is no description of the other suspect.

Suspects' vehicle

The associated suspect vehicle is described as a gold Ford Fusion, with no license plates (pictured here).

If you have any information on the suspects or these cases, please contact our non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 reference cases #C21018502 and #C21018516.

Plant exchange open at the Lake Forest Park Water District

LFPWD Plant Exchange is open!

From April to September, Lake Forest Park Water District (LFPWD) holds their annual Plant Exchange where people can bring extra plants from their yards and exchange them with plants that others have brought to share.

Consider taking part in this exchange as you tend your garden and divide plants.

The plants are located at our office just inside the entrance gate. You are welcome to drop by anytime during business hours which are Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.

The community of LFP is legendary for its gardens, so let's enjoy sharing!

To start off this year’s Plant Exchange, the District brought in several native plants: Broadleaf Bluebells, Salal, Prairie Violet, Honeysuckle, Coast Gumweed, Beach Pea, and Henderson’s Checkerbloom to name a few. There are already quite a few contributions this year of various other plants and trees.

The list of guidelines is short:
  •  Identify your donations as best you can with tags.
  • Bring your plants in pots.
  • Leave as many plants as you take.
  • Please don’t bring invasive or noxious weed species (see our website for more on identifying noxious weeds)
The water district can reuse your old garden pots, and can always use any native plants you have to spare.
