In the Garden Now: A lovely, hardy fuchsia

Wednesday, June 16, 2021

Fuchsia 'Thomasina'

'Thomasina' is a lovely hardy fuchsia with an unusual flower color combination. Outstanding coral or terracotta sepals offer wonderful contrast to the reddish corollas.

The plant typically grows to about 2' x 3'. Expect 'Thomasina' to bloom heavily from late spring until the first frost.

Planted in the ground it should be hardy in the Northwest and bloom again the following year. We're looking forward to a summer of color this year and in years to come!

Shoreline Police: Mail thief shows his face

If the camera can see you now, it will certainly see you once you start ransacking those mailboxes.

On Friday, June 4, 2021 at 9:32am, a Shoreline apartment manager notified us of a burglary in the 17500 block of 15th Ave NE.

The manager showed the responding deputy video footage of a male in the lobby area holding a pry tool, which he likely used to enter the secured building. As you can see, the male is not wearing a mask so his face is easily seen.

The male walks around for a few minutes and THEN he pulls a hood over his head as if to conceal his identity. Too late. He uses the same pry tool to break into the building’s mail room.

The deputy believes this is the same suspect responsible for two other burglaries in the same apartment complex.

If you can identify him, please call our non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and reference burglary case #C21017271.

Book review by Aarene Storms: What If We Were by Axelle Lenoir

What If We Were by Axelle Lenoir

17-year-old buddies Marie and Natalie battle boredom by playing a game called "What if we were ___" in which one player names a topic (Vikings! Superheros! Spies! Fruit!) and they both imagine their lives as that subject.

In between sessions of the game, the friends attend classes, cope with awkward parent conversations (SO AWKWARD!) and tease each other about love interests.

This is a sweet, slice-of-life comic and a fun excuse to let imaginations run wild. No explosions, no car chases (not even imaginary car chases) but lots of relatable stuff with diverse, likeable characters.

Recommended for readers ages 14 to adult.

Aarene Storms is a librarian who reads and reviews books for all ages. She can be reached at aarenex@haikufarm.net

In King county vaccination levels are up, and COVID-19 rates are down

Just another two weeks...
On June 15, 2021 King County achieved an important milestone as 70% of residents age 16 and older have completed their vaccine series.

That means that within two weeks, on June 29th, 70% of residents 16 and older will be protected from COVID-19 through vaccination and the King County mask directive will end.

(It takes two weeks after completing the vaccine series to be considered fully protected.)

Once the King County mask directive ends, the Washington state mask guidance will be in effect in King County.

The King County mask directive currently in place strongly urges all residents, fully vaccinated or not, to wear face masks in public indoor settings.

The mask directive was issued to help us all stay safer until our community was more protected from the virus.

Since May 20, 2021, when the current King County mask directive was issued:
  • An additional 170,000 people age 16 and older completed their vaccine series and another 130,000 first doses were administered to people of all ages, including second doses to adolescents under 16 years of age.
  • The 14-day COVID-19 case rate in King County dropped 66%, from 133 cases per 100,000 residents on May 20, to 45 cases per 100,000 residents on June 11.
  • The 7-day COVID-19 hospitalization rate dropped 70%, from 3.3 hospitalized cases per 100,000 residents on May 20, to 1 hospitalized case per 100,000 residents on June 11.

People who are unvaccinated remain at higher risk for getting COVID-19 and spreading the infection to others. And masks are an effective way to limit the spread of coronavirus, which spreads primarily through the air.

For these reasons, unvaccinated people need to follow Washington state guidance and continue wearing masks indoors when around other people who are unvaccinated. This remains in effect even after the King County mask directive ends. You can read more about this milestone on Public Health Insider.

Shoreline council agenda for June 21, 2021 meeting

The Agenda for the June 21, 2021 Shoreline City Council  Meeting includes three study items:

The 2020 Police Service Report (PSR) is an annual police report presented by the Shoreline Police command staff to the City Council. The report contains information on crime statistics, police data and other information relevant to public safety. Chief Shawn Ledford and Captain Ryan Abbott will present the report.

The COVID-91 pandemic has seen a growth in street racing activity nationwide and within the Puget Sound area. Street racing is extremely difficult to address under current laws and even more so in the City of Shoreline where Police calls for service and limited resources cut down on available discretionary patrol time to combat the issue.

Pursuant to RCW 46.61.530, street racing amounts to reckless driving under RCW 46.61.500, however these State law provisions fail to place consequences on organizers, non-driving participants, and spectators for their actions in facilitating and encouraging the activity. Council is scheduled to discuss proposed Ordinance No. 937 which would amend the Shoreline Municipal Code to add a new chapter regarding street racing.

"Stay Out of Areas of Racing"

Mayor Hall requested the City Manager to schedule a Council discussion to direct the City Manager to establish a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for City employees. The Mayor also requested that Council discuss establishing a mandatory vaccination policy for in-person attendance at any council meeting or indoor event sponsored by the City. Currently, the City Manager does not recommend that the City Council consider adoption of any mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policies.

Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny on Saturday, June 19th

Merge your love of the planet with your love of gardening in this informative session!

This coming Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 11am, Third Place Commons is proud to present “Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny.”

Register now to join this free, Zoom program in which Yasny will field your questions and share tips and tricks for keeping your garden beautiful through environmentally friendly practices.

Register here for “Green Gardening with Master Gardener Julie Yasny.”

This program is part two in Third Place Commons’ three-part “Going Green” series, which grew out of the Climate Town Hall this past April.

You’ll also want to mark your calendar and sign-up today for the third and final part in the series, “Keep the Cycle Turning: How to be a Savvy Recycler,” presented by Republic Services Recycling Coordinator, Natalie Caulkins.

Caulkins presented during the Climate Town Hall and also hosted a breakout room during the group conversations, and both sessions were packed with folks eager to learn more about recycling properly. What can and can’t actually be recycled? Does it actually matter if your recyclables are “empty, clean, and dry”? Are you guilty of “wish-cycling” and what impact does that have?

Well-intentioned recyclers make a lot of costly mistakes. But we can help ensure that more things are successfully recycled when we better understand what can and can’t be recycled – and why.

So make a plan to join the conversation on June 30th at 7pm. Register here to “Keep the Cycle Turning: How to be a Savvy Recycler.”

Third Place Commons – a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization – has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs. Northgate pedestrian bridge installation continues this weekend

Aerial photography by Jared Solano. Instagram @Juarez.Solano

If you drive I-5 south of Shoreline (and who doesn’t from time to time) you’ll notice something new near Northgate -- crews last weekend installed a section of a new pedestrian bridge over the northbound lanes of the freeway.

The humped section --- white with orange mesh fencing around it just left of the top center in the picture -- was placed over the freeway late Saturday night and into Sunday morning.

The second section of the bridge (the larger, more elaborate structure left of the just-placed section) is scheduled to be put in place over the southbound lanes this coming weekend.

In the foreground is the completed -- but not open yet -- Northgate Link Light Rail station which opens for service in early October.

First section of Northgate pedestrian bridge being installed

The new bridge from west of the freeway at North Seattle College to the light rail station may be one of two new pedestrian/bike bridges over I-5 if the city of Shoreline’s efforts to obtain funds for a 148th Street non-motorized bridge are successful. (see the project website

Work will begin at 11:59pm on Saturday, June 19, 2021 and continue into Sunday morning until 4:30am.

The remaining span has been assembled in the median of I-5 and will be moved into place using self-propelled transporters and cranes.

Attorney General Consumer Alert: Beware of scams related to Washington’s COVID vaccine lottery program

Make sure it's the real thing!
OLYMPIA — The Attorney General’s Office and Washington’s Lottery are urging Washingtonians to be wary of potential scams associated with the state’s “Shot of a Lifetime” lottery for vaccinated Washingtonians.

The program’s drawings will be held on Tuesdays through July 13, and feature $250,000 and $1 million cash prizes, sporting event tickets, technology and tuition credits, among other incentives. Vaccinated individuals who are in the state’s Immunization Information System are automatically entered into the drawings.

The primary method the Lottery will use to contact drawing winners is by phone, but representatives with the Lottery will never ask for bank account information or Social Security numbers over the phone.

The Lottery may also contact some winners by email or, as a final method of outreach, text message. If you are wary of a call, voicemail, email or text that purports to be from the Lottery, contact Washington’s Lottery directly at 360-810-2888 to verify that they are a Lottery representative.

The Lottery has received some reports of callers attempting to use the program to scam Washingtonians.

How will “Shot of a Lifetime” winners be contacted?

The Lottery will primarily contact drawing winners by phone, but will use whatever contact information is listed in the state’s Immunization Information System, which may include email. The Lottery may also use text messages as a final method of contact.

When calling, if the drawing winner does not pick up, the Lottery official will clearly identify themselves, leave a detailed message with clear information about the nature of the call and will include information about a date and time by which they must receive a call-back in order to validate them as a winner.

Lottery officials will ask to confirm contact information, including home address and email, so they can send an official prize claim form to the winner.

However, they will never request personal information like a Social Security number, mother’s maiden name or bank account information over the phone.

Winners will have 72 hours from their initial contact to claim a prize, allowing time for Washingtonians who receive a call, text, email or voicemail to verify that it came from the Lottery.

How to identify potential scams

Washingtonians should always be on alert for signs that a call, email or text might be a scam, and not a legitimate contact from the Lottery. Some things to look out for include:
  • A call or text purporting to be from the Lottery that comes from an out-of-state number. Calls will come from state-owned phones with either 253 or 564 area codes, both from Western Washington.
  • A caller who can’t or won’t answer detailed questions about the program.
  • A caller who is rude or pushy, and demands personal information right away.
  • A caller who demands your Social Security number or banking information over the phone as a condition to claim your prize.
  • A caller who says you must first pay a fee to claim your prize.
  • Any email prize notification that does not come from “@doh.wa.gov.” Official prize notification emails related to “Shot of a Lifetime” will come from a Washington Department of Health email address ending in “@doh.wa.gov.” Be wary of any email prize notification that comes from a personal email address or one that mimics a state government agency.
  • An email that requires you to click on a link or open an attachment — do not click on links or attachments, they can be malicious.
  • A call, email or text informing you of your COVID Lottery winnings even though you know you have not been immunized.

If you are unsure if the call you receive is legitimate, don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t give out any personal information unless you are satisfied the caller is from the Lottery. If people have questions about any call, email or text they receive from someone purporting to be from the Lottery, they can contact the Washington Lottery directly at 360-810-2888.

If you believe you have fallen victim to a scam, or other unfair or deceptive business practice, file a complaint with the Attorney General’s Office at atg.wa.gov/file-complaint or by calling 1-800-551-4636.

This would be a two-year term, and you would serve as a valuable resource on any issues that arise. NNN would contact you no more than 4-5 times a year. Your expertise would be much appreciated as we grow and expand our service areas.

Volunteers

Now that things are starting to open up more, our services will be in more demand. During the pandemic, NNN has been quite active, helping members with transportation to medical appointments, running errands, and helping with gardening and light housework. NNN members continue to meet for outdoor walks and socially distanced lunches. There are plans to expand those social and outreach opportunities, and we would love your help!

We are looking for volunteers to help with organizing and hosting events, developing new events and activities based on member interests, distributing materials to the community, helping to establish partnerships with other community groups and more! Time commitment is flexible, approximately 3-5 hours a week!

Please contact info@northwestneighborsnetwork.org or call 253-237-2848 to learn more! NNN is committed to an environment where everyone is treated with respect and dignity.

Edmonds Driftwood Players (EDP) is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2021 Scholarships.

According to Wikipedia:

USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10) is an Independence-class littoral combat ship of the United States Navy. The ship is named after former United States Representative Gabby Giffords, who was shot along with eighteen other people during a 2011 shooting in Tucson, Arizona.

The ship's name was announced by then-Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus on 10 February 2012. Gabrielle Giffords is the 16th U.S. naval ship to be named for a woman by the United States Navy, and the 13th U.S. naval ship since 1850 to be named after a living person.

The littoral combat ship (LCS) is a set of two classes of relatively small surface vessels designed for operations near shore by the United States Navy. It was "envisioned to be a networked, agile, stealthy surface combatant capable of defeating anti-access and asymmetric threats in the littorals."

Researchers at UW Medicine’s Virology Laboratory are closely tracking the statewide spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant, which health experts say is more transmissible than other mutations of the virus.

As of June 14, the lab has detected 170 cases of the B.1.617.2 strain in samples from Washington state. The variant has caused waves of new cases in India, China, Sweden and the United Kingdom – and is now on the rise in the United States.

“It's something that we're really concerned about when we're watching those numbers over time,” said Dr. Pavitra Roychoudhury, acting instructor for the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at UW Medicine.

The lab identifies strains of the virus through genome sequencing of positive screening tests. Essentially, the process identifies the strains present locally and across Washington state.

The FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines provide the best available protection against the Delta variant as well as all other mutations detected since the pandemic began, Roychoudhury said.

On Sunday afternoon, June 13, 2021, despite the rainy weather dampening participation, Baháʼís from Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Edmonds, Seattle, Kenmore, and Sammamish gathered for a show of racial unity by walking several rounds around Paramount School Park.

A highlight of the day’s tribute to race unity was the presentation of original works by Seattle poet, Raven Saint Reeves. Mr. Saint Reeves has been creating original poetry for years, and regaled the group with several of his new pieces. It was an honor to have him join in this year’s celebration of Race Unity Day.
