Shoreline Schools plans for full reopening this fall

Tuesday, May 18, 2021

At their May 3, 2021 meeting, the Shoreline School Board heard a presentation on budget planning for the 2021-2022 school year that included the expectation schools will be fully reopened this fall, unless public health guidance prevents that from occurring.

At this time, the Governor’s Office is also expecting that districts will offer a remote learning option for students who need it.

On Wednesday, the Washington State Department of Health released their school district guidance and recommendations for the 2021-2022 school year. Staff are in the process of reviewing the guidance and more information will be shared in a future update.

Shoreline mail theft

Mail theft vehicle on right

This is how mail theft often happens, at night when you are tucked in to your homes and all seems safe.

This caper happened on 05/10/20221 in Shoreline. Check out the vehicle on the far right of the screen. We think it's a Chrysler 300 with large chrome rims and a sunroof.

The homeowner called 911 around 9:21pm from the 20100 block of 7th Ave NE. USPS informed him that a package had been delivered. The victim checked his mailbox, but no package!

The homeowner checked his surveillance camera. Mystery solved. Package stolen.

An unknown subject exits the passenger side of the Chrysler, runs towards the row of mailboxes and opens each one. The person grabs something, presumably the homeowner's package, and gets back in the car. The Chrysler is then seen leaving southbound on 7th Ave NE.

If you have any information on the vehicle or the subject in the passenger seat, please call the police at our non-emergency number at 206-296-3311 and refer to case #C21014399.

United Way of King County, DoorDash, community partners celebrate milestone: 100,000 food deliveries completed

DoorDash food pantry in south King county

This week, United Way of King County celebrated 100,000 deliveries of food as they combat food insecurity across the region in partnership with DoorDash and its social impact initiative, Project DASH.

Project DASH utilizes DoorDash’s fulfillment platform, DoorDash Drive, to enable United Way and other nonprofits to reach and serve clients through last-mile delivery -- or getting the product to clients in that last leg of the journey.

This 100,000-delivery milestone was made possible by thousands of DoorDash delivery drivers, known as Dashers, as well as volunteers and AmeriCorps members.

The program is one of United Way’s valuable assets to combat food insecurity in our region, which has increased significantly during the pandemic.

Through this program, more than 2.5 million pounds of food pantry items and groceries have been delivered in all of King County to 4,100 households, ensuring that thousands of people per week have access to culturally appropriate and nutritious food.

More than 70% of those served are people of color, who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

Locally, the program partners closely with North Helpline Food Bank and Hopelink.

DoorDash launched Project DASH nationwide in 2018 and, since then, it has grown from a few deliveries a week to over 400,000 deliveries of items, including food, mental health kits, diapers and school supplies in 2020 alone.

Even as the pandemic begins to recede, the need for reliable, nutritious food available to individuals and families who are food insecure will still remain in King County.

To celebrate the 100,000 deliveries, which is the highest in the nation, and to further combat food insecurity, DoorDash is donating $20,000 in DoorDash gift cards through its Community Credits program to United Way of King County.

US Army Air Force hero returns home after 78 years

All photos by Douglas Cerretti

The family of U.S. Army Air Forces Tech. Sgt. Alfred F. Turgeon, whose fate was unknown for 78 years, now knows when and where he died. He was accounted for January 13, 2021 after the Army used DNA analysis from remains buried in Europe.

His family moved to Alaska after he enlisted at age 21 to fight for the Allies in World War II.

On Friday, May 14, 2021, Tech. Sgt. Turgeon's remains were received with honors at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery in Seattle, WA for burial next to his sister, Lorraine Bass.

The official procession was led by the American Legion Department of Washington Patriot Guard.

A van with 3’x5’ American Flags and two Guard members arrived at the Evergreen site and dispensed flags to those assembled. Members of American Legion Post 227 were participants in the ceremonies.

A full funeral service was held

Edmonds artist Michael Regan
presented a portrait of Alfred to
his nephew, David Bass.
In the summer of 1943, Turgeon was a radio operator/waist gunner assigned to the 344th Bombardment Squadron, 98th Bombardment Group (Heavy), 9th Air Force in North Africa.

On Aug. 1, 1943, the B-24 Liberator aircraft on which Turgeon was serving as a waist gunner and radio operator crashed as a result of enemy anti-aircraft fire during Operation TIDAL WAVE, which was the largest bombing mission against Nazi oil fields and refineries at Ploiesti, north of Bucharest, Romania.

Of the 10-man crew, only the captain survived, taken as a prisoner of war.

More than 300 airmen were believed to have died in the operation and another 100 were captured, according to the National World War II Museum.

Only 33 of 178 B-24s survived the mission.

His remains were not identified following the war.

The remains that could not be identified were buried as Unknowns in the Hero Section of the Civilian and Military Cemetery of Bolovan, Ploiești, Prahova, Romania, then later moved to Belgium.

1919 - 1943
According to an article in the Anchorage Daily News by Tess Williams, Turgeon's nephew, David Bass, had volunteered a sample of his DNA several years ago to the POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

The agency began exhuming remains in 2017 at a Belgian cemetery where 80 American soldiers were believed to have been buried.

The remains of Turgeon and others were sent to Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska for identification.

Scientists used the DNA provided by Bass, his cousin and his aunt Joan Cutler, Turgeon’s sister, to make the identification.

And Friday, he came home.

New development brings affordable housing options to Shoreline - the 192 Shoreline Apartments

This building will be replaced with a seven-story affordable rents apartment building
Photo from Google maps

By Diane Hettrick

The property on the southeast corner of 192nd and Aurora has been through several dramatic changes over the years.

Previously owned by the Pearson family, for 25 years it was the site of the Sure-Fit mattress company, building and selling mattress from its 27,000 square foot building.

The mattress factory closed and the building, empty for a time, was leased to locally owned Aurora Rents while they built their new three story building on their property at 175th and Aurora.

It was empty again until 2013 when it was leased to the Rat City Roller Derby - Shoreline's first and only professional sports team.

Suddenly, Shoreline was full of roller derby fans. Rat City used the building, which they named The Rat's Nest, for practices, for exhibition matches, B and C team matches, and for the Derby Brats girls' teams. Jet City Roller Derby from Everett used the building for their matches.

Lance Neubauer's gym Get Strong First had a separate space in the building.

The property is triangular, fronting on Aurora. The hillside behind the property belongs to Seattle City Light. The Interurban Trail is visible beyond that. Google maps.

In March of 2018, the Trent Development Group bought the property and announced plans for The Crux, a six-story 244-unit apartment building. The design included a large space for Neubauer's gym, but Rat City had to find new quarters.

The Crux was to break ground in 2019 and be completed in 2021. New owners tried unsuccessfully to find a new space for Rat City. In March of 2019 Rat City left for temporary quarters provided by the Seattle Parks department.

Lance Neubauer is very happy with his new gym space in the back half of the Subway Sandwich building just off Aurora at 185th and is in full operation with all COVID-19 protocols observed.

In March of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic closed everything down. Financial arrangements changed, based on assessment of risks. Some deals were able to go forward, as witness all the townhouse construction in Shoreline, but many fell by the wayside.

Today there is new life for this property.

New owners TWG (www.twgdev.com), are a real estate development company specializing in commercial, market rate, affordable, and senior housing developments.

They have announced the start of a new affordable housing development in Shoreline: 192 Shoreline Apartments.

Construction on 192 Shoreline is expected to commence mid-2021, and is projected to be completed by mid-2023.

192 Shoreline will offer affordably priced living spaces for residents earning less than 50% of the county’s area median income.

Located at 19022 Aurora Ave., 192 Shoreline will be a seven-story housing development featuring 250 units ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments.

Among other features, 192 Shoreline will include a community facility for the services and co-ownership partner Alpha Supported Living Services, a local nonprofit organization that has been providing support to individuals and families living with developmental disabilities for nearly five decades.

“Partnering with TWG will help us create a new space to continue supporting the needs of our clients and their families,” said Scott Livengood, CEO of Alpha Supported Living Services.
“Our community facility within Shoreline will allow us to reach more individuals and maximize each person’s quality of life.”

192 Shoreline was designed considering neighborhood connections and high-green building values.

“Twenty percent of the total units are reserved for large households with four or more people and the properties are pet friendly,” said Megan Adams, development director focused on Washington and Oregon for TWG.
“Not only are we looking forward to expanding our presence in the Seattle market, but we are honored to be partnering with a local nonprofit that has served King County communities for decades: Alpha Supported Living Services.”

Twin Ponds Gardens are thriving - and the food bank benefits

The Twin Ponds Garden volunteers report that it's just about time to plant tomatoes, so they cleaned out the last chard bed to make room.

We pulled the plants and harvested the rest of the leaves, netting seven pounds of chard!

We also harvested more chois, mustards, spinach and herbs,
filling three big coolers with produce for the food bank!

And the new fact sheets for the bee house and bug hotel were installed, too.

We're getting ready for their big plant sale next week -- we'll post a notice soon!

Shorecrest student selected to represent Washington state in NASA's Artemis Moon Pod essay contest

Brianna Blanchard
Shorecrest student Brianna Blanchard has been announced by NASA and Future Engineers as one of 155 semifinalists in the Artemis Moon Pod Essay Contest, a national competition that asked K-12 students to imagine leading a one-week expedition at the Moon’s South Pole.

Brianna will represent the state of Washington, Grades 9-12, in the next round of the competition.

The essay contest was issued in collaboration with NASA’s Artemis Program, which will land the first woman and the next man on the Moon.

Using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before, the Artemis Program will use what is learned on and around the Moon to take the next giant leap: sending astronauts to Mars.

As NASA sets out to inspire a whole new generation, the Artemis Generation, the essay contest invited students to imagine leading a one-week expedition at the Moon’s South Pole and to tell NASA all about it.

This included writing about their expedition’s crew and technology, with an expectation of leaving their technology behind to help future astronauts explore the Moon.

Approximately 14,000 essay submissions were received from K-12 students across the country and over 1,000 eligible judge volunteers comprised of educators, professionals, and space enthusiasts helped review essays. 155 in three divisions were selected as semi-finalists.

Brianna is a junior at Shorecrest, daughter of Joe and Fion Blanchard of Shoreline. Her essay can be viewed at https://www.futureengineers.org/artemismoonpodessay/gallery/48013

As a semifinalist, Brianna received an Artemis Prize Pack filled with space-themed prizes plus the opportunity to attend a series of virtual Artemis Explorer Sessions with NASA experts.

On March 23rd, NASA held a virtual event, where contest participants had the opportunity to learn about space exploration from speakers including: NASA Astronaut, Ricky Arnold, Associate Administrator of NASA’s Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate, Kathy Lueders, and Associate Administrator of NASA’s Office of STEM Engagement, Mike Kincaid.

At the conclusion of the event, the semifinalists were unveiled. But there was one more surprise in store for all the students who submitted an entry: NASA will fly a digital copy of all 14,000 essays around the Moon aboard Artemis I.

Vaccine breakthrough cases in Washington state

On April 15, 2021, The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) reported a total of 217 COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases among vaccinated individuals in Washington state as of April 3, 2021.

That is up from 102 since they first reported cases of breakthrough on March 30, 2021. Breakthrough cases have now been identified in 24 of Washington’s 39 counties.

Vaccine breakthrough occurs when a person tests positive for COVID-19 two weeks or more after receiving the full course of an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

Large-scale clinical studies found that COVID-19 vaccines prevented most people from getting COVID-19 illness.

However, the vaccines are not 100% effective. This means a very small number of fully vaccinated people will still get sick with COVID-19. Scientists note that breakthroughs are expected with any vaccine.

To date, more than 1.7 million people have been fully vaccinated in Washington state. The breakthrough cases represent a small portion, about .01 percent, of the fully vaccinated population.

DOH is investigating a total of five suspected deaths of individuals who experienced vaccine breakthrough. The people who died were between 67-94 years old and all had multiple underlying conditions. Four were residents of long-term care facilities.

In Washington state, the median age of those with confirmed vaccine breakthrough has shifted downward since the first cases were reported, with more people in the 40-59 year old demographic compared to previous weeks. Some breakthrough cases sent for sequencing showed evidence of variants.

While the majority of individuals with confirmed vaccine breakthrough experienced only mild or no symptoms, some people have been hospitalized.

DOH is still gathering information for approximately half of the breakthrough cases. However, the agency can say that among breakthrough cases with hospitalization information available, 12% were hospitalized.

Additional investigations help us better understand clinical and outbreak information when vaccine breakthrough happens.

"Finding evidence of vaccine breakthrough cases reminds us that, even if you have been vaccinated, you still need to wear a mask, practice social distancing, and wash your hands to prevent spreading COVID-19 to others who have not been vaccinated," said Umair A. Shah, MD, MPH, Secretary of Health.
"We encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible, and encourage friends, loved ones, and co-workers to do the same."

PCC yogurt is likely source of cases of E. coli outbreak

Saturday, May 15, 2021

Recalled
During the ongoing investigation into an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) has identified a likely link to PCC Community Market brand yogurt produced by Pure Eire Dairy.

Pure Eire Dairy is working with the state Department of Agriculture to identify and recall all affected products.
Anyone who has PCC Community Market brand yogurt at home should not eat it and should throw it away.

The outbreak now includes 11 confirmed cases, including six children under the age of 10, infected with bacteria that have been genetically linked. Counties with cases include Benton (1), King (8), Snohomish (1) and Walla Walla (1). Seven people have been hospitalized. Three people have developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious complication of E. coli infection.

Symptoms of an E. coli infection include diarrhea, stomach cramps and blood in the stool. There is usually no fever. If you notice symptoms, especially bloody diarrhea, contact your health care provider right away. E. coli O157:H7 infections can cause serious complications.

DOH and partner agencies are continuing to test food samples and gather case information in this ongoing investigation. DOH will provide more information as it becomes available.

Coordinated police response addresses street racing throughout Puget Sound

In response to the increased illegal street racing and street and freeway takeover activities across the region, and inherent recklessness of those in attendance, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and multiple other police agencies throughout the Puget Sound region have come together to focus on this important public safety issue.

In early 2021 multiple King, Pierce, and Snohomish county police agencies came together and coordinated their efforts to respond to, and investigate illegal street racing related incidents in the region.

In addition to law enforcement collaboration, local municipal and county prosecutors have voiced their support and dedication to improving public safety in responding to this significant public safety issue.

Since early March, investigators from the Tacoma and Kent Police Departments, the Washington State Fusion Center, and the WSP have all worked together to identify and arrest multiple suspected racers, and forwarded over 220 different charges against 29 different people in relation to these incidents.

These charges range from Reckless Driving, Reckless Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct, and Malicious Mischief all the way up to Vehicular Assault. Charges have been forwarded on suspected organizers, drivers and spectators who contribute to these events.

This problem is not new, nor is it unique to our region. In fact, this is a trend seen in many large cities across the country. But with it has come repeated instances of this reckless and irresponsible behaviors leading to serious injuries of those involved in the racing activities and the bystanders watching alike.

It is a unified goal to bring attention, enforcement, and an end to the reckless behavior that has resulted in multiple fatal and serious injury incidents in relation to street racing events.

These joint efforts and collaboration on the part of law enforcement agencies and prosecutors across the region will continue to be dedicated towards street racing as long as it continues to be a nuisance and danger to the public, as well as an inconvenience to those motorists impacted by this behavior.

Captain Ron Mead, commander of field operations for the WSP in District 2 (which encompasses all of King County), stated

“This regional problem exceeds the ability of any single law enforcement agency to address it alone.  By working together we hope to bring these unsafe and illegal behaviors that pose significant risks to those involved, bystanders, and uninvolved motorists to an end.
"Through coordinated efforts, better use of resources, and collaboration with local prosecutors’ offices, participants in this dangerous activity will be held accountable for the betterment of public safety.”

Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Stephen A. Herschkowitz, King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office added,

“The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is committed to helping protect the safety of our communities’ streets by working closely with WSP and other county agencies for this special emphasis.
"While sometimes glamorized, reckless racing and drifting outside appropriate venues is extraordinarily dangerous. Recently, several people in our county have been severely injured, and one has died, as a result of these illegal street-racing activities. Our office is proud to provide legal assistance to our law-enforcement partners as part of this emphasis team.”
