Shoreline School board approves anti-racism resolution

Dr. Tanisha Brandon-Felder
On Monday, May 3, 2021 the Shoreline School Board unanimously approved a historic Anti-Racism Resolution to support implementation of anti-racism processes and practices for students and staff across the district.

The resolution was drafted by a group of Shoreline Schools staff of color and included input and ideas from students, staff, community and the school board.

“This resolution was created with care and urgency,” said Dr. Tanisha Brandon-Felder, director of equity and family engagement.
“The most impacted groups crafted the language, did the research, gathered examples and created the vision.”

Some of the resolution’s highlights include:
  • Ensuring that implicit bias, racism, oppression and their impacts are understood
  • Proactively teaching students and staff about racism’s causes and effects
  • Developing and revising student handbooks and discipline policies to reflect the impact racially derogatory language and actions have on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) students and staff
  • Reviewing and adjusting grading, discipline and special education/program identification practices to remove the disproportionality that exists for BIPOC students
  • Establishing Anti-Racism, Hate and Bias Plans in each school that includes staff training and accountability measures
  • Developing plans and allocating resources for ongoing anti-racism training for all students, staff and members of the school board
  • Holding students and staff accountable for interpersonal racist acts
  • Establishing processes for students and staff to report and receive support when racist incidents occur

Hamlin Park photo by Vicki Westberg

The Forest Archives

Silhouetted by
an iridescent
web of stars
monastic hoods of
evergreens nod imperceptibly.

Supernatural beings
do inhabit the region
like mythological giants,
tired ancient spirits gathered
in the painful endurance of time.

Cathedral spires, heavy and hard
aspire upward like tapers
to be lit by lightning fires.

They creak like masts in the wind
from blasts that make them turn and bend,
bow and sway in a noisy dance of freedom.

The pipe organ prelude concludes
with a sepulchral silence
that dares forth
an occult moan.

Rain is due and spirits fly
among the arboreal ecclesia.
Then streams of sacred sapphires enter
and sizzle through the archives
like church whispers,
telling stories
of the past, grandpast
and great grandpast,
and how the archives
retain water
in their fibers
as I do.

Eligibility for basic food benefits expands with changes to state and federal laws and includes college students - SNAP

United Way of King County

In an effort to address growing food insecurity as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, United Way of King County has launched a campaign to ensure that everyone who is eligible for Basic Food, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), applies for this hunger– and poverty–fighting benefit.

Recent changes in federal policies and state regulations have expanded eligibility and benefit levels for thousands of households across the state, including community and technical college students.

A family of four is eligible to receive more than $600 to purchase food at grocery stores, online and at many farmers markets. The amount a family can receive depends on a variety of factors, including income, housing costs and household size.

Families with mixed immigration status can register their eligible children to receive Basic Food.

Additionally, the federal government stopped applying the “public charge” rule, so receiving Basic Food benefits will not affect families with pending visa applications.

Nelly Evans, food security program coordinator at United Way of King County, said many people, especially college students, do not know they are eligible for this program or how to get help to apply.

The funds families and students receive from Basic Food can expand their household budget to pay for school, rent or other needed items.

“Basic Food is one of the best tools to combat poverty and hunger. It’s an incredibly valuable benefit that can boost economic activity in the community,” Evans said.
“The program empowers families to choose where and how they purchase food, and what kind of food is best for their them.”

Once enrolled in Basic Food, school-aged children are automatically enrolled in free school meals, as well as Pandemic-EBT, and some infants and toddlers may also qualify for the Women, Infants and Children program, which provides additional food benefits.

Because of the new eligibility guidelines, more than 50,000 community college and technical school students across the state are also eligible for this program.

Those students also qualify for the Basic Food and Employment Training program, an education and work training program that can help with childcare subsidies, books, tuition assistance and additional scholarships.

For guidance and resources about Basic Food, please visit United Way’s dedicated webpage.

Shoreline Parks Bond fails to validate - so measure fails by 122 votes

Parks (in red) would have been in the new bond issue. Parks (in orange) in the previous bond.

Shoreline voters showed strong support for Proposition 1, a park bond levy for park improvements and park land acquisitions.

Over 72% of those casting ballots approved the measure, well above the 60% vote required for passage.

However, the number of valid votes cast fell short of the mark by 122 ballots.

State law also requires that for a bond measure to ‘validate,’ at least 40% of the number of votes cast in the previous general election, which was in November 2020, need to be cast in the election in question.

This election needed 14,092 valid ballots. The certified election results show 13,970 votes cast, 122 votes short of the amount needed for validation.

You can see below the votes required and those received:

As you can see, the biggest issue is that over 21,000 people who voted in November didn't bother to vote in April.

When you drill down to individual ballots: some people didn't sign their ballots, needed to verify their signatures, got late to the drop box, or even left their ballots on top of the drop boxes after the deadline.

Passage of Proposition 1 would have authorized improvements to eight parks and the acquisition and improvement of new park land.

Betsy Robertson, Chair of Shoreline Parks For All, worked until the last possible second, trying to contact the voters who needed to verify their signatures.

I’ve been keeping a low profile as I come to terms with, and mourn, the results of our April special election. We knew there would be overwhelming support, but a 72% YES vote exceeded expectations! đź’š Thank you.

The challenge was always going to be turnout.

I’m crushed... but not giving up.

I hope we get a chance to vote on this again. I hope the folks who simply forgot or couldn’t be bothered to participate will realize how much their voice actually matters and could have made the difference.

I hope the people I bird-dogged over the last month will forgive me and recognize how important every last reminder to turn in ballots and every effort to spread the word was needed. And I wish I had done even more.

The small but mighty group that made up our campaign did Herculean work. I will be honored to work with them again. WHEN... not if... we have the opportunity to advocate for parks in Shoreline again.

On June 14, 2021, the Shoreline City Council will discuss whether to place the bond measure on a future ballot.

Consumer Alert: AG Ferguson warns consumers of scam health insurance ads and websites

Attorney General Bob Ferguson urges consumers to be on the lookout for websites posing as the state’s health insurance marketplace.

The Washington Health Benefit Exchange has received complaints from Washingtonians coming across ads and websites posing as the official health insurance marketplace. It has also received complaints about ads and websites claiming to grant consumers special access to the health plans on the official marketplace.

Some websites are tricking Washingtonians to get their personal information. Some provide services, but charge for things that should be free. Others are lead generators, making false claims about providing consumers with a simple, streamlined process for comparing marketplace health plans.

In reality, these lead generators just sell consumer information to the highest bidder, often to insurance brokers who are not authorized to sell marketplace health plans.

“My office works to protect all Washingtonians’ health care rights,” Ferguson said. “That includes warning individuals about fake health care websites before someone gets scammed. We’ve included some simple tips to spot ads or websites posing as the office health insurance marketplace or claiming to grant special access to the marketplace. If you come across one of them, please contact my office.”

“Customers who need health coverage should be able to easily and safely obtain it, without being taken advantage of” said Pam MacEwan, Chief Executive Officer of the Exchange. “And this is why we alert the Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office to prompt investigations of scams.”

WAhealthplanfinder.org, the state’s official website, is used by one in four Washingtonians to obtain health coverage. Washington residents can find, compare and enroll in new health plans. On the website, Washingtonians can find out whether they qualify for free or low-cost coverage.

However, some scammers appear to be posing as the official marketplace or claiming to offer consumers special access to marketplace health plans to sell Washingtonian’s private information. These websites claim to offer consumers a simple way for the consumer to shop for and compare the best marketplace health plans.

In reality, these websites simply sell the consumer’s private information, often to insurance brokers that cannot sell marketplace health plans. Consumers who enter private information into fake marketplace websites, such as social security numbers or birth dates, also run the risk of becoming a victim of fraud and identity theft.

Also, consumers who use websites that are providing services will not get full information about their insurance options, including subsidies or access to Apple Health. The official marketplace for Washingtonians is the only place individuals can access tax credits and other federal assistance. The insurance plans offered by the Washington Health Benefit Exchange are the only plans to have guaranteed consumer protections and coverage, which plans purchased outside the marketplace may not.

To avoid getting scammed, follow these tips while shopping for health insurance:
  • Verify the web address of the exchange: The only official web address for the online marketplace is www.wahealthplanfinder.org. Any other site with a variation on the name or with an address that ends in “.net” or “.com” is not the state’s official marketplace. If you are unsure whether you have found the official website, call Washington Healthplanfinder toll-free at 1-855-WAFINDER.
  • Don’t pay for free stuff: The official marketplace for the state of Washington is the only place where you can receive tax credits, subsidies or access to free coverage through Medicaid or Washington Apple Health. Washingtonians never have to pay to sign up for free or low-cost health coverage in the marketplace.
  • Reach out to free, legitimate help: Only individuals who are certified by Washington Healthplanfinder or Medicaid to assist you with the enrollment process should request personal information to complete your application during a scheduled visit. This help is always free.
  • If you don’t know whether someone is certified to assist you, call the Washington Healthplanfinder Customer Support Center at 1-855-WAFINDER. Community volunteers trained by Medicaid can be verified by calling 1-800-562-3022 or emailing AskMedicaid@hca.wa.gov

To report an ad or website posing as this official site or a website claiming to offer special access to marketplace health plans, file a complaint with the Washington State Attorney General's Office. To report an insurance agent, agency, or other licensee for misrepresentations or fraudulent, deceptive, or coercive activity, file a complaint with the Office of the Insurance Commissioner.

Shoreline-based World Concern responds to India COVID-19 crisis

Through its partners on the ground in India, Shoreline-based World Concern is responding to meet critical needs in the India COVID-19 crisis: oxygen, PPEs, and vital funds for community medical facilities to purchase supplies quickly and locally.

With millions of people living in extreme poverty in India, nationwide lockdowns mean poor families have no source of food or income. Vouchers for cash and food are critical to saving lives as well.

Yesterday, India reported 3,780 people died from the virus in one day and there were 382,315 new cases — two grim records for the country. But it’s likely much worse than those numbers indicate. Some say less than 5% of cases are being reported. Officials fear that 700,000 people could die in the next three months.

As a member of the Integral Alliance, a network of Christian international disaster response and development organizations, World Concern is able to join the response and rally supporters here in the U.S., offering them a way to help in a crisis like this.

Cases are rising to dangerous levels in Nepal, Bangladesh, and other countries bordering India where World Concern works. Preparations for responses in these countries are being made as well.

World Concern is calling for prayer and encouraging Americans to consider donating to organizations serving or partnering in India. The needs are massive and help from around the world is needed.

For more information on World Concern, or to donate, please visit www.worldconcern.org.

World Concern is a Christian global relief and development organization. At World Concern, the solutions we offer, the work we do, creates lasting, sustainable change. Lasting change that provides lasting hope. Our areas of expertise include disaster response, clean water, education, food security, child protection, microfinance and health.

King County Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline

Sound Generations is a partner,
providing van transportation
Hopelink has launched the Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline (425-943-6706) as a one-stop-shop for finding and securing transportation to and from vaccination sites in and around King County.

For many communities across King County, transportation is a constant barrier to getting to their doctor’s appointments, grocery stores and social gatherings. This barrier was made even more complex by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Individuals – especially older adults, people with disabilities, people with limited English and members of the BIPOC community – faced some of the most significant barriers. As the COVID-19 vaccine began to roll out in January, it was clear that transportation continued to be an obstacle. Many of the populations most in need of the vaccine were unable to safely and reliably get to their vaccine appointment.

This need prompted Hopelink to think creatively on how to be part of the solution. In addition to launching the King County COVID Vaccine Mobility Task Force, Hopelink created the Coordinated Vaccine Transportation Helpline.

This Helpline is a one-stop-shop for finding and securing transportation support to and from vaccine appointments in and around King County. Individuals, caregivers, caseworkers, medical professionals, vaccine schedulers and others can receive individualized support for themselves or the rider they are helping through either an online intake form or by calling 425-943-6706 (press 5 for language assistance).

There is no eligibility criteria, and the ride is free in most circumstances.

This program aims to support communities that are the most vulnerable and need access to the vaccine sites; this includes BIPOC communities, seniors, immigrants, refugees and individuals with disabilities.

“We want to ensure transportation is not the barrier to accessing the vaccine in our community,” says Staci Sahoo, Director of Mobility Management at Hopelink.

The Helpline was launched in late February and is staffed by Hopelink team members who are bilingual in English/Spanish, and staff also have access to interpretation services at the time of the call. The Helpline reservation line is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30am to 4pm. You can also leave a voicemail and get a callback.

The success of this Helpline is because of the incredible partnerships that were created. This includes Sound Generations (Hyde Shuttle and Volunteer Driver Program), Catholic Community Services of Western Washington (King County Volunteer Services), King County Metro (Access, Community Van, Crossroads Connect, Via to Transit), Snoqualmie Valley Transportation, Northshore Senior Center, Puget Sound Educational Service District, Hopelink’s Non-Emergency Medical Transportation, Lyft, and Uber. These partners have stepped up to provide transportation to vaccine appointments and provided them at no cost.

The UW - Fire department vaccine clinic at the Shoreline Center has extended its hours, and welcomes walk-ins. There is no waitlist for appointments.

They do ask that walk-ins arrive before 5pm, if possible, to make sure there is time to serve everyone.

Starting Monday, they will have Pfizer vaccine - which is the only vaccine approved for 16 year olds and up - as well as Moderna.

  • Although appointments help us plan our staff and vaccine supply for the day, we are happy to take walk-ins.
