Roses love sunshine - and don't seem to mind the snow

Red rose blooming with patches of snow on the ground

It's not just the daffodils that grow through a cover of snow. Many others flowers are oblivious to 11" of snow and just keep smiling.

I really thought that one of my rhodies was a goner, though. In the snow, what had been a six foot wide bush was half that width. Branches, which had been carefully trimmed up from the ground to avoid ground beetles, looked like they were all on the ground.

Today, he looked completely normal, in fact quite jaunty. He said, "Me? Look that ragged? It was dark and you must have been mistaken." Ok.

So here's another rose Lee found today.

School district bond refinancing saves taxpayers $20 million

Shorecrest High School

Shoreline School District recently refinanced existing voter-approved bonds, saving Shoreline and Lake Forest Park taxpayers $20 million over the life of the bonds.

In typical bond refinancing situations, a tax savings of five percent is generally the expected target. However, due to excellent market conditions, the school district was able to achieve a 20.19 percent savings for its taxpayers in the refinance process.

Bonds are used by school districts to fund school construction and other capital projects. The bonds refinanced by Shoreline Schools include the voter-approved 2010 and 2011 bonds that financed the construction of Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools.

In addition, the District sold the remaining authorized bonds approved by voters in 2006 that had not yet been issued.

“We are excited to have been able to capture such a significant cost savings for our taxpayers,” said Superintendent Rebecca Miner.
“Our district is fortunate to have a community that has historically supported our students, staff and schools through our bonds and levies, and we pride ourselves on acting as good stewards of that generous support.
"I want to extend my gratitude to our finance staff for their foresight and hard work in successfully completing this process with exceptional results.”

The bond refinancing and sales plan was approved by the Shoreline School Board on January 11, 2021 and took place on February 10, 2021.

Contribute artworks to the new homeless shelter this Saturday

Fill the rooms with art at the
new homeless shelter 165th and Aurora
Google Maps

Saturday, February 20, 2021, 12 noon to 5pm, 16357 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133, west side of the street, plenty of parking. For more information contact Billy King phone 206-340-8881.

Local artist Billy King is spearheading a project to fill the rooms at the new homeless shelter at 160th and Aurora with art.

Billy says, "I read about it in the Shoreline Area News. I wondered if they would want art for the rooms and the answer is a resounding YES! So I took the tour and it is a FANTASTIC facility.

"The facility has everything you can imagine; it’s quite large, single story, with 62 one room units, each with a new twin bed, closets and sink... it’s nice!

"Plus there's a full commercial kitchen, many activity rooms, bathrooms in the room or in the hall, parking, games area, it’s all here. The clients are homeless; the type of housing is low barrier. They will be allowed to drink or smoke, depending. The facility will have many attendants on site.

"King County now owns the building so rent is not an issue.

"I think it would be cool while the homeless are getting their life together, they are viewing local art. So would you be interested in placing your art in this location? Good for you!"

Billy is looking to fill the rather large facility with local art with a goal of two pictures per room - 124 art works.

The first drop off is this Saturday and everyone is hoping for the weather to cooperate.

For tax purposes please create your own donation statement and leave a copy with us at the facility. If we can't issue receipts that day your receipt will be mailed or emailed to you. WeatherWatcher: Shoreline gets 11 inches of snow before slowly warming up

E Line Metro Bus stuck at N 185th and Aurora Ave N

Another February winter storm series to go into the history books.

Between Friday evening and Saturday afternoon the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas recorded 9 inches of snowfall. Some of that snow drifted in the easterly winds during the storm, making snow accumulation measurements difficult. Saturday was our first day with a sub freezing high temperature since February 9, 2019.

Seems like déjà vu. This month two years ago we had a February arctic blast. In 2019 we had a total of 20 inches of snowfall in February over several storms. The bigger storms in 2019 occurred between February 8th and 12th, nearly the same time as this year.

Richmond Beach Saltwater Park February 13, 2021

On Sunday Shoreline recorded an additional 2 inches of snow accumulation before showers tapered off and temperatures warmed just slightly above freezing at about 1pm.

The transition to warmer weather has started. This series of winter events is now ending with a total of 11 inches accumulated over the two days.

Forecast: Rain is expected to arrive Monday afternoon with temperatures climbing into the low 40's. Some urban flooding is possible as a half inch of rain is expected to help melt off all this snow. We are going into a seasonable active rainy weather pattern for the week and into next weekend.

Long range: There are still some hints that we could see a little bit of snow next weekend. Forecast models though haven't converged on a solid idea yet, and the amounts seem to be minimal compared to what we saw this weekend. We still may have a couple more opportunities of lowland snow events before we're done with this winter season.

Snow sculptures - everyone gets very creative

The snow was unusual in the amount that fell but also that it was perfect for creating sculptures. Here are some of the photos we received.

2021 property tax statements coming soon

Property tax statement

Property tax statements for 2021 will be mailed to King County taxpayers on or around February 15. If a mortgage lender pays your taxes, tax statement details are forwarded to them.

If you pay your property taxes yourself and you have not received a statement by March 1, request a tax statement online at kingcounty.gov/PropertyTax, contact King County Treasury Operations at propertytax.customerservice@kingcounty.gov, or call 206-263-2890.

The first half of your 2021 property taxes are due by April 30. This deadline will not be extended, unlike in 2020 when a one-time extension was implemented due to the then-emerging COVID-19 pandemic. The Pierce and Snohomish county treasurers are also maintaining this deadline in their jurisdictions.

To help taxpayers facing economic hardship, King County continues to offer a payment plan program first launched in 2020. This program is available for real property homes, commercial businesses, land, and mobile homes in King County. To participate, property owners must sign an agreement with King County Treasury.

If participating owners also have a mortgage, they need to notify their lender about the payment plan agreement. The program is administered through a third-party vendor and monthly payments are credited to the property tax account once the terms of the payment plan are met.

For taxpayers participating in a 2021 payment plan, King County is currently waiving the $75 program setup fee for qualified taxpayers, but participants will need to pay a monthly processing fee charged by the vendor.

Those taking part in the program will also need to pay interest of one percent (1%) each month on the outstanding amount of their tax bill, as required by Washington state law. However, the three percent (3%) penalty applied annually on June 1 for outstanding property taxes is waived for those enrolled in a payment plan.

A payment plan for 2021 taxes can be made for a term of up to 18 months. For more information on the program, visit kingcounty.gov/PaymentPlans or email paymentplans@kingcounty.gov.

King County's in-person services are still suspended due to COVID-19, but the Treasury website at kingcounty.gov/PropertyTax lists other ways residents can access services. Taxpayers can also use that link to sign up for text and email reminders about their property taxes.

For information about property tax relief programs for seniors and people with disabilities, visit TaxRelief.kingcounty.gov, email Exemptions.Assessments@kingcounty.gov, or call 206-296-3920.

Lights out for 2,900 Shoreline and LFP customers for two hours

City Light Power Outage map

When my lights flickered just after 11pm, I checked the power outage map and it was clear. I should not have expected the data to go up so quickly.

This outage is along the county line like Saturday's was but it is on the east of the freeway instead of the west. This one is huge - over 2900 customers. It happened all at once and City Light is showing it as one event.

There's a neighbor saying that a transformer blew but that is not necessarily the primary cause.

This is the only outage in the county right now.

UPDATE: And then, poof! All the power came back on at the same time just before 1am. Some of you will have slept through the whole thing. This is why your appliance lights are flashing.

There is one outage on the east side of Aurora at N 160th.
