130 trees would be cut to construct 12 feet of
sidewalk and amenity zone along Dayton

Text and photos by Jamie Holter

The Washington State Department of Transportation is doing a major remodel of the regional headquarters at N 160th Street and Dayton Ave N to make room for new co-workspace partners, the Department of Ecology staff and equipment.

WSDOT building looms behind
Central Market
If you can’t picture the building, it’s the mammoth 1970’s structure above Sears and Central Market.

The work triggered mandatory street improvements adjacent to the property including:

Along Dayton Ave N

  • Street pavement widening for on-street parking and bus stops
  • New curbs/gutters
  • 5-foot-wide amenity zone (typically a landscaping strip containing various utilities, mailboxes, etc.)
  • 8-foot-wide sidewalk

N 155th
The code requires an 8 foot sidewalk
and 5 foot amenity zone
Along N 155th St

  • Street pavement widening for vehicles
  • New curbs/gutters
  • 5-foot-wide amenity zone
  • 8-foot-wide sidewalk

Along N 160th St

  • New curbs/gutters
  • 5-foot-wide amenity zone
  • 8-foot-wide sidewalk

To do this work, an estimated 130 of the nearly 400 or so trees will be removed.

Currently the city and WSDOT are in talks to reduce that number. This could include reducing pavement widths or relocating sidewalks to avoid critical root systems.

WSDOT Project Managers are also concerned that removing select critical trees with complex root systems could result in the unintended die off of many others.

The city recognizes that some slopes need root systems to stabilize the hillside.

The city is currently taking comment on this project, including the trees, through December 27, 2019.

Contact the city’s project manager, Caleb Miller, at cmiller@shorelinewa.gov.

Grand Menorah Lighting 2019 at Shoreline City Hall Sunday

Menorah Lighting at Shoreline City Hall

Grand Menorah Lighting 2019 will be held at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Ave N, 98133 on Sunday December 22, 2019 from 4-7pm.

Chabad of Shoreline will celebrate Hanukkah with a Grand Menorah Lighting for the fourth year, on the steps of Shoreline City Hall. Donuts and latkes to follow!

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, begins this year on the evening of Sunday, Dec. 22 and concludes the evening of Monday, Dec. 30.

Crowd gathers for lighting of
the Menorah in Shoreline

It commemorates the victory of a militarily weak Jewish people who defeated the Syrian Greeks who had overrun ancient Israel and sought to impose restrictions on the Jewish way of life and prohibit religious freedom.

They also desecrated and defiled the Temple and the oils prepared for the lighting of the menorah, which was part of the daily service.

Upon recapturing the Temple only one jar of undefiled oil was found, enough to burn for only one day, but it lasted miraculously for eight.

In commemoration, Jews celebrate Hanukkah for eight days by lighting an eight-branched candelabrum known as a menorah. Today, people of all faiths consider the holiday a symbol and message of the triumph of freedom over oppression, of spirit over matter, of light over darkness.

In The Garden Now….'Afterglow’ Winterberry

Winterberry
Text and photos by Victoria Gilleland

Holiday color is everywhere……. except maybe in the garden. Grey doesn’t have to be the predominant color in our gardens as winter makes its appearance.

The addition of a few plants with colorful winter berries could be just the touch your garden needs to liven it up for the new season.

The tried and true ‘Afterglow’ Winterberry is a deciduous shrub that produces masses of bright reddish orange berries.

They’re a real standout in the fall and winter garden!

Winterberry is native to eastern North America and is a member of the holly family. Berries produced in fall typically last though winter as long as the birds don’t eat them. For optimum berry production they should be grown in full sun.

Plants grown in wet sites tend to spread to form thickets where as those grown in drier places remain more compact. Shade grown plants tend to be open and produce few berries so look for a sunny spot for this plant.

Winterberry
‘Afterglow’ Winterberry may reach anywhere from 4-12 feet in height. More compact varieties such as ‘Red Sprite’ and ‘Little Goblin Orange’ are available.

Plants should be pruned in late winter before new growth begins in spring. White flowers form on new growth and are followed by berries in fall.

Winterberry plants are dioecious which means there are separate male and female plants.

Fertilized female flowers produce the bright red or orange berries. One male winterberry plant is usually enough to pollinate 6-10 female plants.

A meandering row of winterberry can make an outstanding hedge or privacy screen. A few brightly berried plants grown in large containers can make an interesting holiday display.

Give these splendid shrubs a chance in your garden! They’re available now in local nurseries.

Botanical Name: Ilex verticillata ‘Afterglow’

Wrestling: A stress filled night for Shorewood team

It was another stress filled night for the Shorewood wrestling team on Tuesday as they defeated the Chargers of Marysville-Getchell 39-36.

The match began with the heavyweights and points were at a premium. The score was tied 1-1 going into sudden death overtime where a mistimed throw by Shorewood's Taejin Thongdee gave Getchell a takedown and an early 3-0 lead in the team score.

A pair of forfeits and a narrow 2-1 victory at 120 pounds allowed the Chargers to pull ahead 18-0. At 126 pounds Shorewood's Kai Layton returned to the varsity line-up after missing the past week due to illness and pinned his opponent to get Shorewood on the board.

Two matches later, at 138 pounds, Aidan Jung needed just 44 seconds for the pin. Jung was the first of five straight Thunderbirds to emerge victorious as Shorewood grabbed a 33-24 advantage.

A loss at 182 pounds left Shorewood with just a three point lead with two matches to go. Freshman Hunter Tibodeau responded to the challenge as he gave Shorewood an insurmountable lead with his seventh pin in his last seven matches.

Shorewood wrestles next this Saturday at the Barry Knott Classic hosted by Nathan Hale High School. Wrestling begins at 10am.

Book review by Aarene Storms: On the Come Up

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas

Bri is 16, daughter of a famous (late) rapper, and she thinks she's ready to take the stage, but other stuff keeps getting in the way: her neighborhood, her school and even her family.

Less violent and intense than this author's first hard-hitting book The Hate U Give, but still full of grit and real life.

The characters are diverse without being stereotypes.

There's room for a sequel, but the story clearly stands alone.

Buckets of cussing, some kissing and sexual situations, some off-page drug use, some violence.

Recommended for readers ages 16 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Survey: water taxi service on Lake Washington

Seattle Water Taxi might be coming to Kenmore

King County Metro currently operates the King County Water Taxi which provides passenger-only ferry service from downtown Seattle to West Seattle and Vashon Island.

Passenger-only ferries are a comfortable way to travel, usually providing a seat for all passengers and allowing them the ability to use travel time to work or relax and enjoy the views. Because ferries are not impacted by roadway traffic, they offer a consistent and reliable travel time.

The King County Council, through a budget proviso, has asked Metro to prepare and transmit a report that outlines a plan for potential future service to the Ballard and Kenmore communities.

As part of that report, Metro is looking for feedback on how you currently travel to better understand whether a passenger-only ferry could be an option.

Potential routes being considered:

  • Ballard to downtown Seattle and/or the Expedia campus (Interbay)
  • Kenmore to Seattle (University of Washington, Madison Park, Leschi Park, or the Portage Bay area)

They are also interested to know if you have any comments or suggestions about potential passenger-only ferry service.

Sandbags and sand available at Hamlin Park / Help keep the drains clear

Friday, December 20, 2019

From the City of Shoreline

As the rain continues today, ground saturation levels are high. We've received multiple reports of standing water and are responding as quickly as possible.

If you see a drain that is clogged with leaves and feel safe in clearing it, please do.

If you would like to report a standing water/flooding situation, call 206-801-2700 or report online through the SeeClickFix app or our website at shorelinewa.gov/servicerequest

We have a free, self-fill sandbag station for residents available at Hamlin Park in the first parking lot on the left as you enter from 15th Ave NE.

It is available 24 hours a day. Empty bags are in the trash can next to the sand pile. Please take only what you need. Bring your own shovels!

From the City of Lake Forest Park

The City works to keep drains clear, but with close to 1,800 in town, we could use your help by making sure your storm drains are clear near your home.

Please do not remove the grates from the drains, as this creates a hazard and does not unclog the system. Instead, rake or blow leaves away from the drain (not into the street).

NEVER try to clear a storm drain or culvert if there is moving water greater than knee deep, and always be wary of traffic when working near a roadway.

Wet leaves are surprisingly heavy, so be careful not to overexert yourself. Debris from storm drains should be placed in yard waste containers.

If flooding is severe, or you find evidence of dumping, please call 206-368-5440.

Impeachment rallies draw local crowds

At 5:30 pm on December 17, 2019 on the eve of the impeachment vote in the House of Representatives, there were over 600 rallies in all 50 of the United States, under the banner of No One is Above the Law.

If local events are any gauge, there were probably twice that many, as the official MoveOn site doesn't include all the local events that are being reported today on Facebook.

According to the MoveOn.org site

Events will be visible, family-friendly, public gatherings to demonstrate to our lawmakers that their constituents are behind them to defend the Constitution — and that Trump has left them no alternative to uphold their oath of office but to support impeachment and removal.

Local residents attended rallies in Edmonds at Westgate, which reported the largest crowds.

Others went to Lynnwood.

The organizer of the Bothell rally is a Lake Forest Park resident, Hallie Condit, who said that it included people from LFP and Shoreline.

Hallie said,

"I was delighted that over 150 people turned out for our impeachment rally!

"The crowd and the cars driving by were very enthusiastic!

"It was very noisy .... honking cars, and we were loudly chanting impeachment and anti Trump slogans.

"These smaller, local rallies are important. We are taking our message to where people live."
