Burglar with distinctive shin tattoo sought by police - Crime Stoppers offers reward

Wednesday, August 28, 2019

Shoreline Police are asking for your help to identify a home burglary suspect who has a distinctive tattoo on his shin.

Detectives say he broke into a home earlier this month and loaded up a suitcase full of jewelry and other valuables. The camera was hidden and investigators don't think he knew it was there.

"Obviously, we got a really good view of this guy. They tried to send out bulletins to other local law enforcement agencies and nobody has recognized him yet.
"Our hope is that somebody will know him and call in an anonymous tip so we can solve it," said King County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Ryan Abbott.

If you know his name or can tell deputies where to find him, Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound will pay you a cash reward of up to $1,000.

Submit the info at http://www.P3Tips.com or through the P3 Tips App that you can download to your cell phone for free.

Shoreline Rotary to hear from "The Running Man" on Wednesday

Join Shoreline Rotary on Wednesday morning, August 28, 2019 at the Shoreline Community College PUB. The meeting starts at 7am with breakfast and camaraderie; the formal program starts at 7:30am.

If you live on Planet Earth, and especially if you live in Shoreline, you may have heard of Lamont Thomas, also known as “The Running Man.”

You may have seen him running, or walking, up and down Richmond Beach Road, or other streets in the neighborhood.

He has written a book called “The Running Miracle,” in which he tells his poignant and inspirational story of overcoming a devastating childhood accident. In a 2017 interview with Seattle Magazine, he recounts his challenging journey and mentions one of his favorite runs: “I like Richmond Beach,” he says of his favorite running spot. “It’s like a present afterwards. You go down to the beach, you look at it for a second, and you’re like, ‘I made it,’ and then you run back.”

According to the magazine article, Lamont Thomas “wears many hats: mentor, comedian, businessman, writer, runner. But as someone who was once told he’d never walk again, it’s the last one that has Thomas beaming with pride.”

Lamont Thomas is an inspirational speaker you won’t soon forget. Bring family and friends to hear Lamont Thomas.

This work will result in traffic impacts on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 27-29. 2019.

To complete this work safely, Washington State Patrol troopers and contracted crews must intermittently conduct rolling slowdowns of traffic in both directions of I-5 to ensure safe work operations and passage for motorists.

Traffic will be intercepted and escorted at slow speeds for up to 15 minutes between Lynnwood and north Seattle as crews pull overhead feeder cables across the highway.

Traffic will return to normal speeds once past the work area. See the map below for more details.

Rolling slowdowns will occur on the following dates:
  • Tuesday night (11:59pm), Aug. 27 to Wednesday morning (4am), Aug. 28
  • Wednesday night (11:59pm), Aug. 28 to Thursday morning (4am), Aug. 29

Traffic using the following on-ramps to I-5 will be affected:
  • On southbound I-5: 44th Ave W (Lynnwood), 220th St SW (Mountlake Terrace), State Route 104 / NE 205th (Shoreline)
  • On northbound I-5: NE 175th St, 5th Ave NE (Shoreline), NE Northgate Way (Seattle)

Drivers should expect delays and consider using alternate routes during construction. Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOT mobile app and the WSDOT Traffic Twitter feed.

Attorney General: Immigration bond services company to provide more than $2.7 million in debt relief over English-only contracts

Attorney General Bob Ferguson
Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that Libre by Nexus, an immigration bond services company, will provide more than $2.7 million in debt relief and refund a total of $58,800 to Washington-based consumers.

The resolution is a result of an Attorney General’s Office investigation into the company’s contract practices, which left clients confused about the monthly fees and obligations of Libre’s program.

Even though Libre advertised in Spanish and primarily communicated with its clients in Spanish, the company provided only contracts written in English, affecting more than 400 Washington consumers.
Today’s resolution, filed in King County Superior Court, requires the company to transfer all Washington customers to an improved contract.

The Attorney General’s Office will distribute the refunds to eligible customers. Libre customers will receive a letter or phone call from the Attorney General’s Office if they are eligible for a refund.

Washington consumers who believe they were impacted by Libre’s practices may also contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Resource Center at 1-800-551-4636. Calls will be answered Monday through Friday, 10am to 3pm.

“Libre by Nexus knew they were selling to Spanish-speaking clientele,” Ferguson said. “Its ads were in Spanish, its sales employees spoke Spanish — yet important legal documents were provided only in English. It’s no wonder many of those consumers were confused about the terms of the program. Any business with similar practices should expect to hear from my office.”

Ferguson encourages consumers affected by similar practices to file a consumer complaint. This form is also available in Spanish. Washington’s consumer protection laws protect everyone who lives in Washington state. The Attorney General’s Office helps all Washingtonians. The office is not part of the federal government and will not turn over information to immigration authorities.

Assistant Attorneys General Craig Rader and Marsha Chien led the case.

Northshore’s 5th annual “Fun Photo Contest” expands to all communities in the Northshore School District

2018 winner in Reflections category
Photographer Cheryl King
Northshore’s 5th annual “Fun Photo Contest” broadens horizons with new September date

After four years of honoring the best interpretive images in its annual Fun Photo Contest, the Kenmore Heritage Society has rewritten the rules for 2019, allowing more time for picture-taking and expanding the area from which photos may be entered to include other communities in the Northshore School District.

Broadening the contest will add photo entries from Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville.

“We have been having so much fun with this contest for four years that we wanted to share the fun with neighboring communities,” said Jo Ann Evans, president of the Kenmore Heritage Society, “and by moving the start date to mid-September, we’re making it easier for students to compete.”

This year’s one-week Northshore Fun Photo Contest begins Saturday, September 14, 2019. Photographers may register now or in person between 10am and 12 noon on the 14th at Kenmore Camera, 6708 NE 181st St in Kenmore. Subject categories will be announced then and posted online the same day. Registration is free, and the contest is open to all ages and skill levels with no residency requirement.

All photographic entries must be taken September 14-21. Winners will be announced at 2pm, Sunday, October 6 at Kenmore Camera, which is a co-sponsor of the annual event.

Marella Alejandrino, who is organizing the contest this year, stressed that the judging recognizes creative expression. “Prizes will be awarded for the most original, appealing, and creative entry in each of our six mystery categories,” she said.

Cash and merchandise prizes will be awarded in each category with best-of-show honors going to the most creative entry.

Questions? Email for answers.

The society’s activities are underwritten by private donations and grants from City of Kenmore and 4Culture.

Correction: Residents of Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville are eligible to enter the contest.

Prepare now for November tolling on SR 99 tunnel

SR 99 tunnel
Drivers using the State Route 99 tunnel will begin paying tolls on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

State law requires that toll revenues from the SR 99 tunnel be used to pay back construction bonds as well as pay to operate and maintain the nation’s largest double-decked road tunnel.

The two-mile-long SR 99 tunnel runs underneath downtown Seattle and opened in February 2019.

“While the SR 99 tunnel has been a great success, we expect traffic patterns in Seattle will shift when tolling starts,” said Patty Rubstello, WSDOT assistant secretary of Urban Mobility and Access.
“We are giving as much advance notice as possible to allow drivers plenty of time to get ready, which includes opening up a Good To Go! account.”

A Good To Go! pass gives SR 99 tunnel drivers the lowest toll rates possible - from $1 to $2.25, depending on the time of day. Without a Good To Go!account, those same tolls will cost $2 more for each trip.

The Washington State Transportation Commission set the time-of-day toll rates for the SR 99 tunnel in 2018, after years of study and community involvement.

There are a limited number of free Good To Go! sticker-passes available for SR 99 tunnel users. The best way to get a pass is online at 99tunnel.com. All existing Good To Go! passes will work in the SR 99 tunnel.

Passes can also be purchased at MyGoodToGo.com, select Fred Meyer and QFC locations and at walk-in customer service centers. The Good To Go! call center, 866-936-8246 can help customers, however, anticipate longer than usual wait times for those calling.

WSDOT and SDOT encourage travelers to use the WSDOT tools available to ‘know before you go’ and to use SDOT’s traffic page, which contains useful traffic links locally and regionally.

WeatherWatcher: Mild, short heat wave

Sunny skies in Shoreline, Washington

Warm weather is returning for Tuesday and Wednesday this week. There has been a lot of reporting about it being really hot, but most of the forecast models for the last day or two have backed off for those of us who spend our time north of downtown Seattle.

In general, most forecast models are pointing to high temperatures in the low 80's on Tuesday and Wednesday. We have a marine air push arriving Wednesday evening that will cool us back down into the 70's for the rest of the week and through the weekend.

The source of our warm air on Tuesday and Wednesday? The easterly and northerly winds will be picking up, bringing warm air over the mountain ranges from the interior of British Columbia and Eastern Washington. Tuesday is expected to be particularly breezy with north winds gusting up to 25mph, maybe even 35mph in some spots.

I took screenshots of the UW WRF (University of Washington Weather Research and Forecasting) GFS models of Western Washington for Tuesday and Wednesday at 5pm.

Tuesday:

Wednesday:

Temperatures in this model are in degrees C, and the shade of color on both days falls in the range of 24°C - 25.5°C, if I'm reading that right, so between 75°F and 78°F for our area. A slightly warmer spot along the Puget Sound coast for Shoreline of up to 27°C or 81°F.

Bottom line: With the changes and disagreement in forecast models the past few days I think we could see it go either way, staying in the upper 70's or possibly reaching the mid 80's until Thursday. Most likely I think we'll see around 84°F Tuesday, and 80-82°F Wednesday. I will keep an eye on the difference between Northridge and Richmond Beach weather stations to see if that little heat bubble develops near the Puget Sound coastline on Wednesday.

If you want really warm weather, I hear Portland will reach the upper 90's for the next two days.

Wanted in Edmonds: information about murder at Senior Center

Murder victim Alexander Rhodes

Cell phone video captures the chaos seconds after a deadly shooting at a massive party in Edmonds. It happened at the city’s senior center on December 14, 2018 which had been rented out for a private party.

Edmonds police say two people arrested right after the shooting were later released and are not the suspects.

The shooting left 23 year old Alexander Rhodes dead.

A massive crowd saw his murder — but detectives say it’s still a mystery as to who killed him.

“We know there were over 100 people at this incident. We know, at least, two guns were fired and so far we have very few people who have come forward with any information, in fact, since the night of the incident only one person has come forward.
"We were given some cell phone video that does show part of the incident and other than that though, we are not getting anybody to come forward with information,” said Edmonds Police Sgt. Josh McClure.
“Because we know so many people were there, because we know people saw what happened, people videotaped what happened, we know that there are people out there with answers and a young man lost his life and we want to bring the killer to justice.”

Q13 Crime Stoppers is offering a full $1,000 cash reward to anyone who comes forward with the tip that helps lead to the arrest of Alexander's killer.

It is always anonymous -- you never give your name. Submit the information to Crime Stoppers through the P3 Tips App on a smart phone, or call the hot line at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

Safety emphasis patrols will target stand up paddleboarders Labor Day weekend

Sunday, August 25, 2019

State Parks Boating Program reminds paddlers to be safe

Marine law enforcement agencies on Washington state’s marine and fresh waterways will conduct safety emphasis patrols over Labor Day weekend — specifically targeting stand up paddleboarders.

The goal is to educate them about laws and safe practices.

“Stand up paddleboarders need to know that as soon as their board leaves a designated swim area or goes beyond the surf, it is considered a vessel and therefore subject to recreational boating laws,” said Rob Sendak, State Parks boating law administrator.

What are the laws?

Every vessel, no matter the size — including kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards — is required by federal and Washington state laws to carry the following:
  • Life jackets
    • People 13 years of age or older must carry a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket in good condition. The life jacket must be the right size and type for the person wearing it.
    • All children 12 years of age or younger must always wear their life jacket while on board.
    • Inflatable life jackets are authorized only for people 16 years of age or older.
  • Sounding device – horn, whistle or bell.
  • White all-around navigation light – during low visibility such as dusk to dawn, fog or heavy rain.
  • Visual distress signals (such as flares) – required only on federal waterways.

“The law requires people to carry a life jacket. We strongly recommend people choose to always wear one, along with a leash, for maximum safety on the water,” Sendak added.

The penalty for failing to carry the proper safety equipment is a civil infraction punishable by a fine of $99 for each violation. For example, a stand up paddleboarder without an appropriate life jacket and sounding device could be charged with two violations for a possible fine totaling $198.

For more information about paddlesport safety, visit: www.paddlesafewa.org.

The Pink Panther comes to the Senior Center

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and Scarecrow Video’s Silver Cinema Project partner to show some of the most beloved classics for all to enjoy again and again.

In September, The Pink Panther will be shown on Friday, September 6, 2019 from 1:30-3:30pm in the Bridge Room.

The film runs for one hour and 55 minutes.

There is a suggested donation of $2.

The bumbling Inspector Clouseau travels to Rome to catch a notorious jewel thief known as "The Phantom" before he conducts his most daring heist yet: a princess' priceless diamond with one slight imperfection, known as "The Pink Panther".

Enjoy those memorable scenes of the antics of Inspector Clouseau. The costume party was one of them. Remember? If you don't, then you have a treat coming.

Henry Mancini’s music provides the right mood for Peter Sellers, David Niven, Capucine, Claudia Cardinale and Robert Wagner.

The film was selected in 2010 to be preserved by the Library of Congress as part of its National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant."

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center is located in the southern-most building of the Shoreline Senior Center, 18560 1st Ave NE #1, (facing 185th) 206-365-1536.

Such a nice way to spend a Friday afternoon with your sweetie or friends! Come, enjoy!
