Seattle Parks makes room for the roller derby

roller derby facility, thanks to Seattle Parks.

More access to Roller Derby coming to Seattle Parks and Rec Community Centers
By Rachel Schulkin

After the closure of other roller derby facilities in King County, Seattle Parks and Recreation heard from several roller derby teams and programs that were seeking space to hold games and practices.

After reviewing the various sizes of our gyms, gathering input from the roller derby community, we are proposing the painting of permanent roller derby lines at up to 17 sites across Seattle Parks and Recreation Community Centers over the next two years as floors are refinished on our typical cycle.

Furthermore, we are allowing the use of tape to continue at Magnuson Park Community Center until permanent lines can be painted on the gym floor after the remodel of the Community Center which is planned to commence in the later part of 2020.

Thanks to all those who reached out to us, and for your patience as we figured out a way to make it work!

Magnuson Park Community Center, 7110 62nd Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115

Comment from the Rat City Roller Girls: "This is huge for our sport! Thank you Seattle and thank you to everyone in the community who worked to make this happen."

The Rat City Roller Girls previously leased space in Shoreline, in an old mattress warehouse which is slated for demolition.

Rainbow web. Fall approaches. Richmond Beach, Washington

Spiders and spider webs are a definite sign of fall - although they don't usually come in rainbow colors.

I had a largish black spider running down my wall last night - not the giant European house spiders - my cats murdered all of those long ago by bouncing them like basketballs.

I was annoyed with my spider because she's not supposed to be on my wall - she's supposed to be at the front door, keeping the porch light bugs away from the house.

For the first time in years, I don't have a porch light spider. There is usually one who moves in next to the door and feasts on all those little flying things that are attracted by the light. We usually have a few conversations about where the web can be located, then we settle in to a comfortable routine. I don't swipe down the web and she gets to eat all the bugs in peace.

My porch light is recessed flat into the soffit over the porch steps. One year the porch spider created a web like a fishing net. The edges were in a circle around the metal rim of the light and the web hung down about five inches in a sack.

It was astonishingly effective. Nothing flew by the light more than once.

We did have some tiny baby spiders - so small that they looked like specks of dust. So there's hope for a guardian for next year.

DKH

Correction: all the visible spiders in the fall are female. Happy to give them credit!

There goes the neighborhood

By Diane Hettrick

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

There goes the neighborhood. No. Literally. There goes the neighborhood.

The story is that 12 homeowners with adjoining property lines got together and put their properties up for sale as a unit, marketing to developers.

N 147th and some houses on 1st NE
will be demolished for a multi family development
Google

The neighborhood is west of I-5, in the 14500 block of NE 1st Ave and on NE 147th between 1st Ave NE and Corliss Ave N.

Steve Robinson has been keeping his eye on the project.

I first saw fencing going up along 1st NE, and then saw the distinctive orange fence on the whole south side of 147th between 1st NE and N Corliss.
Then the houses started coming down.

Reportedly, the deal with the first developer fell through, but a second developer picked up the project.

The city of Shoreline is in discussion with Sound Transit about building a foot bridge across I-5 to reach the Shoreline South transit station at NE 147th.

At this point, we don't have any information about what will be built on the site. The properties are in the 145th rezone, MUR 45 (mixed use residential, 45' height restriction).

Book review by Aarene Storms: For a Muse of Fire

For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig

Jetta is a shadow player: a puppeteer who travels with her parents in a wooden cart, and performs with light and shadow and puppets. Most shadow players make their creations with paper, silk, wooden dowels and fine thread. Jetta's creations are made with one addition: the souls of the dead.

Now Jetta and her parents must perform for a royal audience, with the hope that they will win royal favor and access to a cure for Jetta's malheur. But rebel soldiers get in the way...and one rebel soldier in particular.

Secrets, magic, death, mental illness, blood, more death, and not nearly as much romance as I expected. This dark tale is first in a promised trilogy by the author of The Girl From Everywhere.

Recommended for readers who like their magic dark, ages 14 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Richmond Beach residence is a total loss after fire - firefighters injured

The home in the Richmond Beach fire on Thursday is a complete loss.

Shoreline Fire responded to a residential fire in the 1800 block of 201st St NW in Richmond Beach, just after 8pm on Thursday, August 15, 2019.

When Shoreline Fire arrived, the structure was engulfed in flames. There were explosions and downed power lines. Because of the dangerous situation, the fire was treated defensively. It was kept contained and prevented from spreading to nearby homes, while being fought from outside the structure.

There were some injuries. One of the residents had minor burns and refused treatment. A few of the firefighters were injured and are recuperating at home.

This fire started in a bedroom. The cause is unknown at this time.

Josephine at the NPACF - one night only Jan 25

A one-woman musical biographical play about the iconic Josephine Baker.

Created by Tymisha Harris, Michael Marinaccio and Tod Kimbro. Book and Musical Direction by Tod Kimbro, performed by Tymisha Harris. Directed and Produced by Michael Marinaccio

About Josephine Baker

Born in St. Louis in 1906, Josephine Baker achieved only moderate success in the United States, but became an international superstar after moving to France in the early 20’s. She starred alongside white romantic leading men in films in the 30’s, had multiple interracial marriages and homosexual relationships, and performed in men’s clothing before the term “drag” existed in the lexicon.

She was also a spy for the French Resistance, a civil rights activist, and the mother of 12 adopted children from 4 continents. Her success in France and Europe often gave her the opportunity to live freely without the racial oppression of her home nation, though she never stopped yearning for acceptance in America.

Tickets are $42 for adults, $35 for seniors and military (with ID) and $15 for youth (17 and under)

The Gallery at Town Center presents Elsa Bouman and BethAnn Lawson

Elsa Bouman and BethAnn Lawson
August 13 - September 28, 2019

The Gallery at Town Center is exhibiting a selection of works by Collage Artist Elsa Bouman and Graphic Designer/Illustrator BethAnn Lawson. See these works and the creations of over 80 other local artists during Gallery at Town Center hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm.

Elsa Bouman

Elsa Bouman is an artist living and teaching art in the Seattle area. She has degrees in fine and graphic art and worked as a graphic designer in the music industry in San Francisco for many years. She grew up in Holland Michigan but now claims Lake Forest Park as her home.

These analog collages explore mid-century United States (1940s through 1960s) using a sense of humor and the surreal.

Artist’s thoughts on artistic collaboration: Musicians, actors, and dancers work together, accommodating and connecting all of the time. It is less common among visual artists. This friendly, spatial puzzle known as a “HALVZIE” is a way for visual artists to collaborate together. It requires social skills to allow room for the other artist’s elements and ideas and it is a motivating challenge to let go of your ownership, ego, and idea.

Two ways for you to participate:

1. About the COLLAGE “HALVZIE” Project:
  • Stop by the gallery to pick up your free “halvzie”.
  • Finish the two postcards inside with paper collage, paint or drawing – whatever you like!
  • Sign the back on the “finish” line.
  • Keep your favorite one and drop the other one off at the gallery or send it back to the artist:

Elsa Bouman
19526 40th Place NE
Lake Forest Park, WA 98155

2. Join the artist, Elsa Bouman, on Saturday, September 14th from 12-2pm for a collage demonstration and how to start and finish “HALVZIES”. Learn the art of collage, create visual stories and experiment with abstract design. All materials provided. All ages welcome.

Artist’s Statement: Whether creating or teaching, my art is spiritual testimony and where I find my truest self.

Theme for the show: Mid-Century Modern

BethAnn Lawson

Working as a graphic designer and illustrator for over 30 years, I’ve always spent a great deal of time looking at the way light, shape, and color work together. Through my large paintings, I’m able to expand on these skills, playing harder, expressing thoughtful, bold, colorful images and concepts without parameters.

I can lose myself for hours inside of each one as I take apart the images and carefully put them back together emphasizing colors, rhythms, and patterns, bridging the gap between abstraction up close and more figurative from a distance.

I work buttery acrylics over large white canvases capturing little glimpses of life containing whimsy, the secrets of strangers, and the amazing architecture of nature.

I am always striving for that delicate balance between industry and nature, between meticulous and impetuous, between past and future, between painting as a physical object and invoking a redolent memory.

The Gallery at Town Center is a program of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council and is located inside the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level. 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155.

Photos of the fire in Richmond Beach. Our photographer Wayne Pridemore was on the spot with his camera.

Weatherwatcher Carl Dinse reported that the fire was close enough to his Richmond Beach weather station for it to record a temperature spike. Wind was from the northwest which was the direction of the house fire.

As seen in the photos, the fire produced a lot of smoke, that stayed low to the ground and filled the street.
