Celebrate Shoreline Aug 13 - 18

2019 marks the 24th birthday of the City of Shoreline. The annual Celebrate Shoreline event commemorates this landmark of the City’s incorporation with activities designed to spark celebration and community spirit.

The celebration takes place over multiple days and venues to encourage community participation.

With each year, Celebrate Shoreline reflects the celebration of pride the community has in its Cityhood.

From local arts organizations and neighborhood associations, to area businesses and individual volunteers, Celebrate Shoreline happens because strong community partnerships come together to show their support for their Shoreline neighbors.

Highlights of 2019 Celebrate Shoreline attractions are as follows:

The North City Jazz Walk will be held Tuesday, August 13 for its 13th year of live jazz music in multiple venues throughout the North City Business District. The Jazz Walk is sponsored by the North City Neighborhood Association, the North City Business Association and the Shoreline Lake Forest Park Arts Council.

The Shoreline Lake Forest Park Arts Council will host Correo Aereo at 6:30pm at Kruckeberg Botanic Garden on Wednesday, August 14th for an evening of music in the garden.

The Celebrate Shoreline Car Show will once again be held at the Shoreline Farmers Market at Shoreline Place. Both the Shoreline Historical Museum and the Farmer’s Market are excited to continue their partnership at this year’s event at 10:00am on Saturday, August 17th.

The Celebrate Shoreline Festival on Saturday, August 17th at Cromwell Park will start at noon and include popular pony rides, the petting zoo, live theater, two music stages, inflatables, roving entertainment, a photo booth, a beer and wine garden, and food trucks offering several varieties of food. The successful toy workshop addition last year is back due to popular demand.

And returning for a third year, the Celebrate Shoreline Festival main stage will showcase three community groups sharing their culture through music and dance.

The City will again host the Celebrate Shoreline Main Stage Concert later into the evening of the main Festival with the beer and wine garden available for all festival goers over 21. Local bands Geoffrey Castle, Chikiri, Smokey Brights and Rolling Stones Concert Experience will play the Main Stage Concert.

And finally, as has become tradition, the sandcastle building contest sponsored by the Richmond Beach Community Association will be accompanied by live Steel Drum music at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park closing out the Celebrate Shoreline weekend on Sunday, August 18, 2019.

Homeowners on both sides of state should be ready for wildfire

Washington wildfire

WA State Office of the Insurance Commissioner

So far in 2019, 851 wildfires have burned 13,613 acres of public lands, according to the state Department of Natural Resources. In 2018, 1,743 fires in Washington burned 438,834 acres.

It’s August and we are in the thick of Washington state’s wildfire season.

The fire risk is low in only one county for the entire state — Grays Harbor. The rest of the state is at moderate, high or extreme risk of wildfire.

Minimizing the risk posed by wildfires is a reality for all homeowners in Washington state. It’s no longer an issue only for those who live in Eastern Washington. Here are some tips for all Washington homeowners.

Insurance coverage
  • Review your policy. Does it have adequate replacement coverage if you suffer a loss?
  • Buy special coverage to protect specific valuables, such as jewelry, fine art, and other items that may have limited coverage under your homeowner policy.
  • Prepare a household inventory. If you lose the contents of your home, an inventory makes the claim easier and faster.
  • What you should know about insurance claims after a fire.
Protect your property

There are many resources available to homeowners about how to physically protect their property from a fire. Common tips include:
  • Keep debris out of your gutters and off your roof.
  • Replace or repair missing or broken shingles on your roof to prevent embers from taking hold.
  • Replace or repair broken screens and use wire screens to box in areas below patios and decks to keep flammable materials from accumulating.
  • Create a fire break by removing any flammable material away from the exterior walls of your house — mulch, plants, firewood, leaves and needles. Here’s some information about fire-resistant plants.
  • Health hazards
  • Wildfire smoke is dangerous for everyone. Refrain from outdoor exercise when the air is smoky. If you have asthma or any other health condition, the state Department of Health has information about face masks.
  • Keep your health insurance information and any medications you use ready in case you need to evacuate. The state Emergency Management Division has information about disaster preparedness.

Book review by Aarene Storms: Spinning Silver

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

Irinnna is a noblewoman, bound to marry whomever her father selects. Miryem is a money-lender from a family of Jewish moneylenders. Wanda is a peasant girl who desperately wants to escape her drunken father's house.

These three main characters become entangled into an intricate tale of magic, demons, loyalty, duty, and love, along with their friends and family. The story contains elements of Rumpelstiltskin and also the magic of Poland and Russia including the prince of the frozen lands and Chernobog the fire demon.

The alternating-point-of-view narration is the only piece that irritated me. Would it be so hard to label chapters with the narrator's name? Especially when the narrator is somebody other than one of the three central characters? Gahhh.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy dark stories of challenge and redemption focused on smart, capable women.

Tactful oblique mentions of sexual situations (nothing on the page), no cussing, some drinking, some brawling, some violence (not gory), some bullying. Ages 12 to adult.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Immediate need: Rotary looking for host family for a German student

The Shoreline Rotary Club’s Youth Exchange Program has been bringing foreign students to Shoreline for years.

But this year's program has run into a snag.

A 16 year-old student from Wildeshausen in Germany is scheduled to arrive in Seattle on August 20th for a year-long Rotary Youth Exchange study abroad experience.

She has been accepted as a student at Shorewood High School.

The host family which was to take her has had a sudden and serious health challenge, so she can not stay with them.

Rotary needs a family within the boundaries of the Shoreline School District to step up to host the student during the Fall.

They need to identify a family this weekend.

If you are able to help, or if you know of a family that can help contact Scott Saunders.

Nordstrom's last day at Northgate

Northgate is going to be rebuilt and will no longer be a shopping mall.

Instead it will be home to the National Hockey League (NHL) Seattle team's training rinks.

The rest of the site will be filled with apartments, with some retail and business.

Friday was the last day that Nordstrom was open for business at the mall.

The Northgate Sound Transit station construction is well underway at the southwest corner of the site.

Saturday, The Seattle Times published an article about the last day of sales at Nordstrom on Friday, featuring Shoreline resident Cheryl Shdo.

Cheryl said that although they got her surname and city wrong, the rest of the article was correct.

She has been going to the mall several times a week since 1953 (the mall opened in 1950) and knew the sales staff by name.

I had to go the last day and say goodby to the employees. They are all so kind. Nordstrom gave each of them opportunities to relocate to other stores or get severance. I know where to find my favorite employees!

Nighttime construction at Meridian and N 155th starting Monday

Construction warning sent to nearby neighbors

The City of Shoreline is reconstructing the intersection at Meridian and N 155th near the new Parkwood Elementary School, which is still under construction itself.

Curb cuts are being installed at all four corners of the intersection and the sidewalks are being improved for a short distance in each direction.

"Bulbs" are created at the four corners so pedestrians do not have to walk as far in traffic lanes.

The street is ground down and being repaved.

Nearby neighbors were sent the above postcard to warn them of the work.

Car goes off the road on Perkins Way

Vehicle went off Perkins Way

By Diane Hettrick

Perkins Way is a beautiful, narrow, winding road that twists and turns along McAleer Creek from 15th NE in Shoreline to Pfingst Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park.

The stream crosses under the road at a ravine, then parallels it before it goes underground on its way to Lake Washington.

The road is marked 25mph but people who live on Perkins report that cars racing up the road at twice that speed are common.

Thursday night on Perkins way, a driver was speeding and lost control. The vehicle went off the road and lodged on a bridge that stopped them from going into the creek.

If not for the bridge, the vehicle would have dropped seven feet into the creek, likely impaled by large tree sections and boulders in that portion of the creek.

No alcohol or drugs were involved. Excessive speed and inexperience were contributors to the collision.

The driver and passenger did not sustain any injuries. The roadway was closed for about 45 minutes.

Thank you to the police officers working the scene as well the public works staff that did an exceptional job cleaning up.
