Volunteers at Ballinger Open Space
Saturday, June 22 - 9am to 1pm Greenway Event at Ballinger Open Space

Urban carbon sequestration is happening as we speak at Ballinger Open Space in the City of Shoreline.

With help from our partners, including a local non-profit called City Forest Credits, trees have been and will continue to be planted at Ballinger Open Space as part of a carbon sequestration pilot project, funded in part by Bank of America.

This project highlights the importance of trees in our urban spaces to improve both environmental and human health, and thinks creatively on how to create and maintain successful projects. Check out more information, here.

Volunteers are welcomed to come out and be a part of this exciting project in Shoreline, care for the native trees that have already been planted, and help remove invasive species to open up more space to plant additional trees this fall.

No experience necessary – all training provided. Any participant under 13 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Animal Medical Center of Seattle will move to North City in the fall

Employees of the Animal Medical Center of Seattle

The Animal Medical Center of Seattle (AMCS) has announced that they will be moving to a new state-of-the art facility a mile and a half north of their current location in the fall of 2019.

Animal Medical Center of Seattle is a fully staffed, veterinarian owned, 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital in Shoreline.

They provide specialized and advanced medical treatments for pets in the Seattle area and beyond, with an emergency department that is open 24/7.

AMCS currently shares a building with Animal Surgical Clinic of Seattle (ASCS) at 14810 15th Ave NE in Shoreline. Neither practice has the available space to accommodate desired growth, thus, AMCS’ move allows both practices to expand their services. AMCS and ASCS are independently owned businesses whose respective teams will remain in place.

The Animal Medical Center of Seattle's new address in the fall will be 17518 15th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155 (formally the Walgreens building) and is conveniently located right off exit 176 on 1-5. Until then, they will still be at 14810 15th Ave NE in Shoreline.

Our hospital has signed a long-term lease for this new location, so rest assured we're here for the long haul and are committed to being THE Animal Medical Center for emergency and specialty veterinary services in Shoreline!
We are excited to meet our new neighbors in Shoreline's North City and look forward to continue providing excellent veterinary care in our new building this fall.

Indianapolis: left adrift in the Philippine Sea to battle dehydration, sharks, insanity, and each other

Authors Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic will speak at Third Place Books on Wednesday 6/19/19 at 7:00pm.

Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic draw upon years of original research and extensive interviews to unearth vivid, raw details that turn a distant WWII tale into an urgent, heart-stopping drama.

This account includes the fifty-year fight to exonerate the ship’s captain after a wrongful court martial.

Vincent and Vladic reveal the untold stories of the crew left adrift in the Philippine Sea as they battled dehydration, sharks, insanity, and each other.
Indianapolis stands as the definitive account of one of the most remarkable episodes in American history.

Sara Vladic became interested in the ship when she was 13. For nearly a decade, she wrote letters to the survivors, and in 2001, at 22, she started attending reunions, befriending and interviewing them, and compiling reams of new research.

In the 17 years since then, she has interviewed 107 survivors — 13 of whom survive to this day — and recorded eye-opening stories about their harrowing four days adrift in the Philippine Sea.

Lynn Vincent and Sara Vladic
Lynn Vincent, a US Navy veteran, is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and coauthor of eleven nonfiction books with more than sixteen million copies in print.

Her best-known titles are Same of Kind of Different as Me (with Ron Hall and Denver Moore) and Heaven Is for Real (with Todd Burpo).

A veteran journalist and author of more than 1,000 articles, her investigative pieces have been cited before Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court. She lives in the mountains east of San Diego with her husband and their three Labrador retrievers.

Sara Vladic, an acclaimed documentary filmmaker, is one of the world’s leading experts on the USS Indianapolis. In 2016 she released an award-winning documentary film on the disaster, USS Indianapolis: The Legacy

She has published new research on Indianapolis in Proceedings, the official journal of the US Navy, and appeared as an expert commentator on PBS’s USS Indianapolis: Live from the Deep, which explored the ship’s wreckage. She and her husband, Ben, live in San Marcos, California.

“Gardens made to be lived in” really is an apt description for this year’s gardens. The homeowners, some experienced gardeners and some “learning by trial and error” have created outdoor havens unique to them and their property limitations. Many enjoy their back gardens year-round.

This is an “at your own pace” garden tour of SIX great gardens in the Mill Creek neighborhoods of Brighton, Heatherwood West, Holly, The Lakes, Parkside, plus a 2-acre gem near Martha Lake, Lynnwood. You’ll take away great ideas for outdoor living and interesting plant combinations.

Sprinkled in the gardens you may shop for garden-related handcrafted wares from TEN talented artisans.
  • hand-painted mandala rocks, recycled-wood birdhouses and planting benches;
  • NW scenery art cards and art prints;
  • torch cut house numbers and bolt bee garden stakes;
  • kiln-formed glass flowers, Love Rocks and fairy wands;
  • handmade concrete stepping stones; pottery with botanical impressions;
  • garden jewelry “for looking good when you garden” and glass garden art!

Shoreline CC baseball player Zane Zurbrugg drafted by Milwaukee Brewers

Shoreline CC baseball player drafted into the major leagues

Shoreline Dolphins outfielder Zane Zurbrugg was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 27th round of the 2019 Major League Baseball draft.

Zurbrugg played two seasons for the Phins in 2018 and 2019.

In 2019, Zurbrugg earned First Team All-Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) North Outfield honors as well as First Team All-Region American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Northwest honors. He hit .385, which put him in 2nd in the entire NWAC in batting average. Zurbrugg also reached an on-base percentage of .488, which placed him 4th in NWAC, and a .533 slugging percentage, which put him in 10th in NWAC.

After suffering knee and hip injuries during his freshman year, 2019 was Zurbrugg’s first fully healthy season playing for the Dolphins, and he entered the season ready to prove his ability.

“He is a savvy player who sacrificed and worked hard for this opportunity with the MLB and the Brewers,” said Ben Reindel, Athletics Coordinator and Head Softball Coach.
“He battled several injuries that put him on the bench, but kept a positive attitude throughout. When he got back to full health and had a chance to show what he can do, he made the most of it.”

A natural athlete, Zurbrugg throws 90+ miles per hour from the outfield and routinely makes infield ground outs into singles. He was recruited to Shoreline from Bremerton High School. He is the first Bremerton High graduate since 1992 to be drafted into MLB.

Photos: Scenes from the Secrets Gardens of Lake Forest Park

Annuals were a popular feature in all six gardens.
This hanging planter provides plenty of space  for a mixture of summer flowers.

Photos and text by Cynthia Sheridan

The Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park market and garden tours took place on Saturday, June 15, 2019. With a garden market and six gardens with art and music, there was a lot to see.

Here is just a sampling.

Hostas of all sizes were a big hit.

A dry river bed was a stunning feature in the garden.

Jacinta Green, recently of Charleston, was dressed to match the lovely fresh cut roses on her first ever garden tour. She specializes in sewing her own clothes but works in the tech industry.

This garden bench is now the home of some sassy succulents.

The glamorous Friday night pre-party was a real treat for garden tour volunteers.

Fiery Barberry creates a summer splash of color alongside a garden entry.

Art and artists were abundant, along with musicians and master gardeners. This floral canvas is by Lake Forest Park artist Debbie Tomassi.

If you missed the tour this year, you'll have another chance - in 12 months.

Happy Father's Day

Father and sons

Father's Day has multiple origins, but is generally agreed to have been established in Spokane. The original celebration was inspired by a single father of six.

On June 19, 1910, a Father's Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington, by Sonora Smart Dodd. Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.

Dodd was a member of Old Centenary Presbyterian Church (now Knox Presbyterian Church), where she first proposed the idea. After hearing a sermon about Mother's Day in 1909, she told her pastor that fathers should have a similar holiday to honor them.

Although she initially suggested June 5, her father's birthday, the pastors did not have enough time to prepare their sermons, and the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday in June. Several local clergymen accepted the idea, and on June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day, "sermons honoring fathers were presented throughout the city".

However, in the 1920s, Dodd stopped promoting the celebration because she was studying at the Art Institute of Chicago, and it faded into relative obscurity, even in Spokane.

In the 1930s, Dodd returned to Spokane and started promoting the celebration again, raising awareness at a national level. She had the help of those trade groups that would benefit most from the holiday, for example the manufacturers of ties, tobacco pipes, and any traditional presents for fathers.

By 1938, she had the help of the Father's Day Council, founded by the New York Associated Men's Wear Retailers to consolidate and systematize the holiday's commercial promotion.

Americans resisted the holiday for its first few decades, viewing it as nothing more than an attempt by merchants to replicate the commercial success of Mother's Day, and newspapers frequently featured cynical and sarcastic attacks and jokes. However, the said merchants remained resilient and even incorporated these attacks into their advertisements. By the mid-1980s, the Father's Day Council wrote, "(...) [Father's Day] has become a Second Christmas for all the men's gift-oriented industries."

A bill to accord national recognition of the holiday was introduced in Congress in 1913. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson went to Spokane to speak at a Father's Day celebration and he wanted to make it an officially recognized federal holiday, but Congress resisted, fearing that it would become commercialized.

U.S. president Calvin Coolidge recommended in 1924 that the day be observed throughout the entire nation, but he stopped short at issuing a national proclamation. Two earlier attempts to formally recognize the holiday had been defeated by Congress.

In 1957, Maine senator Margaret Chase Smith wrote a Father's Day proposal accusing Congress of ignoring fathers for 40 years while honoring mothers, thus "[singling] out just one of our two parents".

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Six years later, the day was made a permanent national holiday when President Richard Nixon signed it into law in 1972.

Shoreline Police to conduct emphasis patrols on distracted driving

Saturday, June 15, 2019

Shoreline Police will be conducting several emphasis patrols on distracted driving in the upcoming weeks.

Help keep our roadway safe and reduce collisions. If you're on the road, you're off the phone.

Distracted driving is the act of driving while engaged in other activities that take the driver's attention away from the road.

In the state of Washington it is against the law to hold your cell phone while you are driving.

You CAN use your phone if you are:
  • Hands-free and can start use with a single touch or swipe of your finger
  • Parked or out of the flow of traffic

Lake Forest Park artists share talents at Mera’ki Art Show June 21 - 22

Six local artists have combined their talents for an amazing and diverse art show titled “Mera’ki” June 21 and 22 at 8 Bells Winery in Seattle. This celebration of friendship and artistry is a tribute to the shared passion of individual art forms and bringing diversity to form and fashion.

Mera’ki, (may-rah-kee) meaning: “Artistry. Doing something with soul, creativity or love. When you put ‘something of yourself’ into what you are doing” is the perfect title for the chemistry between these six artists.

Each brings a completely different style of creativity and artisanship to the event where patrons can mingle, purchase and enjoy the fine wines of 8 Bells Winery.

Featured artists are:

Carolle Foucault, Colette Highberger, Debbie Tomassi, Gina Holt, Kammie Saunders, and Marjorie Thompson. Their talents range from wall art to wearable art to garden art.

Small crowd but lively discussion at Shoreline CC public meeting

Shoreline CC public meeting

Text and photos by Steven H. Robinson

Shoreline Community College held an open meeting on Thursday, June 13, 2019 to give the public an opportunity to hear about the College’s future plans – including the student residence hall slated to open in fall and a new Allied Health, Sciences and Advanced Manufacturing Building in the works.

It was an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback to College leadership.

Very few citizens attended the event, but they were rewarded by being able to ask every question they had.

All questions were answered completely
QUESTIONS RAISED BY THE PUBLIC:

What will be happening to remove the traffic bottleneck at the intersection of N 160th and Innis Arden Way?

SCC is working with the city and school district to redesign the traffic flow. Construction will be completed by 2025. Prior to the dormitory's opening, sidewalks will be improved along N 160th, Greenwood Avenue and the north side of Innis Arden Way leading to the front of the College.

Does the college intend to preserve the soccer field and track or turn it into a parking lot?

At the current time there are no plans to change the soccer field and track. There is currently no plan to create parking in that area of campus.

How is the college addressing lower enrollment?

The college has noticed a small reduction in state students and and a substantial decrease in out of state students. This has resulted in the reduction of the budget for the college. This is a challenge throughout higher education in the state and nation.

The college has developed strategies for the coming academic year to cover the downturn in the budget without going to drastic cuts. All departments are helping to make some cuts in their budget and full-time employees should be covered for the coming academic year. Strategies for recruiting students to SCC are being implemented.

How does the college fit into the 'Pre-Kindergarten - 16 years of education' plan?

The college has various programs in early learning in the community, middle and high schools related to training and interaction in programs. The college has STEM and Bio-tech classes during the summers. There are other programs that encourage academic plans at the college.

Is there permitting in process for the new Health Science and Advanced engineering building, and has a location for the new construction been selected?

The architects for the new building are having a meeting with the campus administrator for the involved programs on Friday June 14. The building was planned for replacement of 70,000 sq ft of current out of date facilities. The approved money provides for only 55,000 sq ft leaving only 3 floors of the four story building able to be built given current costs of construction. The site of the new building will be on land currently occupied by existing buildings which will be removed for new construction. New construction will depend on the outcome of the planning sessions currently taking place.

Is Shoreline considering 4 year degrees and will the college drop community from their name?

There is no plan to drop community from the college’s name. Community is an important part of what Shoreline Community College is to the area. The Board of Trustees has authorized the college to research the addition of a Bachelor degree in Dental Hygiene. The State of Washington will need to approve any 4 yr program at SCC.

Whale Trail sign dedication and Orca Month celebration at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park June 21

The Whale Trail and Washington Environmental Council and the City of Shoreline announce the event, “Orca Celebration and Whale Trail Sign Dedication” to promote awareness and stewardship of endangered southern resident orcas.

The free, family-friendly event will take place Friday, June 21 from 1 to 3pm at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, located in the City of Shoreline.

A new interpretive panel focused on marine mammals will be unveiled and dedicated.

Richmond Beach is one of more than 100 sites along The Whale Trail, a network of marine mammal viewing locations that spans from California to British Columbia.

“Shoreline Parks supports The Whale Trail’s efforts to educate the public about marine mammal populations in Washington, especially the highly endangered Southern Resident orcas.
"Richmond Beach Saltwater Park is an optimal viewing location for those found here in the central Puget Sound,” said Will Hall, Mayor of Shoreline and Orca Recovery Task Force member.

The program will open with a welcome by Ken Workman, the great, great, great grandson of Chief Seattle. Featured speakers include Shoreline Mayor Will Hall, Senator Jesse Salomon, Representative Cindy Ryu, Lynne Barre (NOAA Fisheries), Steve Bear (WDFW Police), Donna Sandstrom (The Whale Trail) and Rein Atteman (WEC).

The dedication and orca celebration, including free refreshments, cake and kids’ activities, is one of dozens of Orca Action Month events during the month of June.

“Orca Action Month is a region wide effort to celebrate and protect one of our region’s most iconic wildlife species, but also serves as a reminder that everything that is hurting our orcas hurts us too,” said Rein Attemann, of the Washington Environmental Council.
“Communities across Washington are suffering from unhealthy waterways, too many toxins in our Sound, and not enough salmon. The plight of our orcas reminds us that our solutions are one in the same.”

This past legislative session Washington took some big steps towards restoring a healthy Puget Sound so our waters are a healthy place for orcas, salmon, and all of us who rely on our shared waters. Continuing that momentum, Governor Inslee and Oregon’s Governor Brown declared June Orca Action Month, building on a 12-year history of yearly declarations to bring attention to the orcas and the health of the Salish Sea.

“It’s not too late to save the southern residents—yet,” adds Donna Sandstrom, Executive Director of The Whale Trail and Orca Recovery Task Force member.
“The threats that have brought these beloved and iconic pods to the edge of extinction are all human-caused: loss of prey, noise and disturbance from vessels, and toxin accumulations. We each and all have a role to play in their recovery.”

Furthermore, Orca Action Month proclamations have been passed by the Province of British Columbia, Shoreline, Bainbridge Island, Pierce County, Victoria BC, Vancouver BC, and Seattle. In Washington D.C., Congressman Denny Heck introduced a national resolution declaring June “National Orca Protection Month.”

The new sign at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park is funded through a grant to the Whale Trail from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which protects Southern Resident orcas through its law enforcement program.
