Book review by Aarene Storms: Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda - and Leah on the Offbeat

Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

16-year-old Simon Spier is in the closet, and he isn't sure how to get out. But he's been corresponding online with another local boy called "Blue," and Simon is pretty sure that Blue (or whatever his real name is) will be worth all the drama that will probably accompany coming out.

Then, Martin finds the emails and blackmails Simon.

Did somebody say "drama"?

The book features all of the heartache-y, up-and-down drama of a John Hughes "brat pack" movie, updated with modern characters and modern sensibilities.

It's fun, it's funny, it's surprising, and it's a feel-good book with a happy ending -- perfect summer beach reading.

And if you liked Simon, you'll love Leah:

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

A year has passed since Simon learned Blue's true identity, and in that time, nobody has made much progress getting to know Leah better. She's smart, she's snarky, she's a damn good drummer and a good friend. But even though her mom has known for ages that Leah is bisexual, Leah hasn't told anybody else yet. Not even Simon.

Now senior year is almost over. Prom-drama is running high, with graduation and college coming soon, and Leah is torn when her rock-solid group of friends begins to fracture in ways she never dreamed.

Sweet, warm and funny, with all the melodrama that only 18-year-olds can muster. It makes me remember my high school days with a smile, even though I'd never want to re-live them.

Recommended for ages 12 to adult. Some cussing, lots of under-age drinking, and more sexual situations and angst than you might have thought possible. Gold stars for appropriate mentions of safe sexual practices.

The events may not have happened; still, the story is true. --R. Silvern

Flag Day - June 14

Friday, June 14, 2019

In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the U.S. Army birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.

Perhaps the oldest continuing Flag Day parade is in Fairfield, Spokane county, Washington. Beginning in 1909 or 1910, Fairfield has held a parade every year since, with the possible exception of 1918, and celebrated the "Centennial" parade in 2010, along with some other commemorative events. Appleton, Wisconsin, claims to be the oldest National Flag Day parade in the nation, held annually since 1950.

Blame the crow

Crow's wingspread
By Diane Hettrick

Around 2pm on Thursday, June 13, 2019, households in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park experienced a brief power outage.

It was enough to make the lights flicker. In some cases the power was fully out but for only for a few seconds.

Comcast cable services were disrupted. Some people's cable boxes spontaneously reset themselves, while others continued to have problems for a while.

Some people heard an explosion. Others heard a strange whipping noise from the power lines.

Julie Atwood and her husband got a close up view.

We were outside at the time and whatever it was was VERY powerful - the telephone pole was shaking back and forth and the wires actually touched each other, causing some really scary noises.

Shaila Austria, in Richmond Highlands, actually witnessed the cause.

The bang and power outage can be attributed to a crow (RIP) landing on the lines right in front of our house at 185th and 1st Ave NW. The power lines moved like crazy.

I checked with Scott Thomson at Seattle City Light. Could a crow really cause all that noise and activity? His response:

If a bird lands on a single power line, it doesn’t cause a problem. There is more resistance in the bird's body than the wire so the electricity continues to flow down the wire. Problems happen when a bird touches a wire and something else that creates a shorter path for the electricity to get home, like a second wire.

At that point, the electricity uses the bird as a short circuit. If that touch was short – say an wing touched a second wire and the surge of electricity knocks the bird clear of the wire, a customer might see a flicker. The release of that energy would make noise and that scenario could make the wire move.

So the crow did it. And it doesn't appear that he survived the experience.

As for the flickering, except for a few blocks at the very end of the City Light power "tree" - mostly in Lake Forest Park - everyone has what is called either "redundancy" or "self-healing lines". This means that you have alternate power sources. When one goes, after a very brief pause the other takes over.

And if you are still having trouble with your Comcast cable, call their automated system at 877-824-2288.

Payment glitch interrupts automatic Medicare Advantage and Part D premium withdrawals

From the Office of the Insurance Commissioner

Earlier this year, a federal government systems issue prevented Medicare Advantage and Part D premiums from being automatically deducted from the Social Security payments of some people with Medicare.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), affected people include those enrolled either in a Medicare Advantage plan or in a Medicare Part D drug plan for coverage that started Jan. 1, 2019 and chose to have their premiums automatically deducted from their monthly Social Security benefit, rather than pay the plan directly.

It's not yet clear how many people were affected, and of those affected, who have been made aware, or how much they might owe. The Social Security Administration (SSA) notes that “Plans will be sending premium bills to those affected. If you are affected and haven’t already received a bill in the mail, you will soon. The first bill will likely be for a larger amount than usual to make up for the unpaid premiums.”

Plans must offer enrollees a “grace period” to repay the missed premium payments, which must last at least as long as the delay in billing. Plans also have the option not to pursue these outstanding payments.

CMS advises beneficiaries to call their plan directly with any questions or concerns.

Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) is part of the office of the insurance commissioner.

North Seattle French School moving to Shoreline

Have you ever considered bilingual education for your child?

This fall, North Seattle French School is moving to a new, larger location in Shoreline and is still accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year!

North Seattle French School (NSFS), an independent preschool and elementary school, offers an engaged community, small class sizes, instruction by native speakers, and a focus on social-emotional learning in a bilingual environment.

We believe that learning another language helps foster capable, independent thinkers who will contribute as global citizens of the future.

NSFS is excited to embark on this new phase of growth and development in our new space. The new location significantly increases the school’s classroom space and enables NSFS to continue to grow and thrive in coming years. This new space will also enable the school to accomplish a long-held goal: expanding from offering half-day to full-day preschool.

The new campus shares a site with the Shoreline Center and the Spartan Recreation Center. Amenities include access to a large play field, indoor recreation in the adjacent gym, and potentially the Shoreline pool. Situated between I-5 and Aurora, the campus is well-positioned for students and families coming from both North Seattle and northern suburbs.

“Our students and staff are very much looking forward to settling into the new space and especially to bringing our preschool and elementary together under one roof. So many great opportunities to come!” said Elodie Le Nezet, NSFS Interim Head of School.

With this larger space facilitating continued growth, NSFS is still accepting applications for preschool through 5th grade for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year. No French language experience is needed for students entering preschool or kindergarten.

There's a lot of live and local music to choose from each weekend. Most venues have food, some have dancing. Most have a cover charge and require reservations. All have great local bands and entertainment!

Larry Murante is a Seattle-based singer/songwriter who has a reputation as one of the finest contemporary singer/songwriters in the Northwest. His voice is a testament not only to good pipes but to years of training which he's done, logging over a decade of study with opera, jazz, and musical theater stylists.
North City Bistro and Wine Shop, 1520 NE 177th St, Shoreline 98155, Call 206-365-4447 or go to website and fill out the simple reservation request form, in order to secure seats for the show. Then buy your tickets here.

AURORA BOREALIS

Aurora Borealis Presents: Comedian Jimmy Shubert - $15 cover - 8:30pm - 10pm
The Aurora Borealis 16708 Aurora Ave N, 206-629-5744.
Jimmy Shubert delivers ‘tough love’ with side-splitting skill. He is every bit as satisfying as Lewis Black at his best. Whether it’s stealing scenes in major motion pictures or blowing the roof off any comedy club from Hawaii to Halifax, Jimmy Shubert is stand-up comedy’s next breakout star. His comedy routine is usually performed with an observational point of view, in comedic short-story form, and typically focuses on poking fun at pop culture.

DARRELL'S TAVERN

Sado Nation, The Lucky Boy, Kids On Fire 9pm – 1am.
Darrell's Tavern 18041 Aurora Ave N. 206-542-6688.

Easy Monkey Taphouse, 17537 15th Ave NE B.
Little Bill and the Blue Notes are an institution more than a band. Since 1956 Bill and various lineups have been wowing audiences with their take on rhythm and blues. In 1959 the Bluenotes made the national charts with the teenage love song “I Love an Angel” and since then have released a bevy of recordings.

One of Washington State’s most highly-awarded female blues singers and songwriters (six-time Washington Blues Society Best Female Vocalist, four-time Best Blues Songwriter, etc.), her music reflects the life of a modern blues woman; she’s seen the river rise and take everything more than once, and lived to laugh, sing, and write music about it.

Since 2009, the City of Lake Forest Park has participated in Bike Month.

It is one of the events included in the City's wellness program, which in turn helps reduce our health insurance costs.

The team members were able to log a total of 868 miles for the month, which was 79 miles more than last year.

Based on the “Greenhouse gas reporting: conversion factors 2017,” the team saved roughly 253 pounds of CO2 from going into the environment during May.

While the challenge is over, the team continues biking to work.
