OIC impersonator contacting auto collision victims

From the Office of the Insurance Commissioner

OIC recently received a report that a marketer is making calls to people who have been in auto collisions impersonating the Office of the Insurance Commissioner to sign people up for chiropractic appointments.

There are several problems with this, starting with the fact that it's illegal. The OIC doesn't cold-call people and we don't recommend specific businesses, whether it be a medical provider, auto repair shop or insurer.

Emmeline lives an enchanted childhood on a remote island with her father, who teaches her about the natural world through her senses.

What he won't explain are the mysterious scents stored in the drawers that line the walls of their cabin, or the origin of the machine that creates them.

As Emmeline grows, however, so too does her curiosity, until one day the unforeseen happens, and Emmeline is vaulted out into the real world -- a place of love, betrayal, ambition, and revenge. To understand her past, Emmeline must unlock the clues to her identity, a quest that challenges the limits of her heart and imagination.

Second Rampathon build gives Shoreline resident the freedom to move about

The crew from Jackson Design Build is ready to work

Each year, Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish (MBAKS) members and community volunteers head to homes throughout King and Snohomish counties to build wheelchair access ramps. For free.

Because our neighbors in need deserve the same freedoms we have.

Since 1993, members have provided more than 500 ramps during Rampathon. These ramps provide a much-needed benefit for individuals and families who struggle to get themselves or their loved ones safely in and out of their homes.

This year member organizations built 40 ramps, including two in Shoreline. (See previous article about the ramp built by Shoreline-based Irons BC).

The second ramp was built by Jackson Design Build, based in Ballard and serving north Seattle.

The ramp was constructed for Shoreline resident Lydia Arguelles. Lydia had a heart attack in 2017 and has severe arthritis in her hips and lower spine. She has difficulty walking up her stairs without assistance.

She now has a ramp which is safe for her to use with her wheelchair - a relief for her and her family.

Shoreline School District 412, Director District 4

Rebeca Rivera
Richard "Dick" Nicholson - incumbent

Shoreline School District 412, Director District 5 - open seat

School board incumbent Dick Potter District #5 did not file for another term. His seat has three candidates, who will be in the primary.

The primary election on August 6, 2019 will include races with more than two candidates. Workshop: How to “adopt” a stream and keep it safe for people and fish

Boeing Creek
Interested in "adopting" your local stream?

On Thursday, May 30, 2019 at 7pm, stream ecologist Tom Murdoch will present "five steps of how to adopt a stream" that work!

This event takes place at the Adopt A Stream Foundation's Northwest Stream Center (NWSC) Thursday night, May 30 at 7pm.

The NWSC is located at the south end of Snohomish County's McCollum Park, 600 128th Street SE, Everett 98208.

Advance registration is required by calling 425-316-8592; $5 Adopt A Stream Foundation Members, $7 non-members.

The stream talk begins outdoors where you will see close up how streams work while observing trout, crayfish, sculpin and freshwater mussels in the Northwest Stream Center Trout Stream Exhibit.

Then Murdoch will take you indoors for a fast paced presentation that will teach you how go back outdoors to gather physical, biological, and chemical information. You will also learn how to investigate the historical, social, and political characteristics of your watershed.

Then, you will learn how to present all of that information to land use decision makers.

Presenting development “cumulative impacts” from the Streamkeeper’s Field Guide

Great examples will be shared during the Streamkeeper Tales closure to the workshop - come and leave inspired to take action!

Murdoch, the Adopt A Stream Foundation Director, has been roaming around local streams for the last 40+ years. Along the way, he became the editor of Adopting A Stream: A NW Handbook and Adopting A Wetland: A Northwest Guide, co-author of the Streamkeeper's Field Guide: Watershed Inventory and Stream Monitoring Methods, and principal script writer for the Streamkeeper video starring Bill Nye, the Science Guy.

He also put the “pause button” on some poorly planned developments and led a few hundred successful fish and wildlife habitat restoration projects. Come to this workshop and you will get to see one of those projects: a three-acre wetland restored from a parking lot next to the Northwest Stream Center Visitors Building.

In The Garden Now…..Vanilla Leaf

Deer’s Foot or Sweet After Death

Text and photo by Victoria Gilleland

Vanilla Leaf is a strikingly elegant Northwest native plant that is at its best right now. Its white bottle brush flowers are held above large showy leaves. A stunning addition to the shade garden!

The Sweet After Death common name for the plant refers to the fact that when leaves are dried and crushed ‘dead’ they smell like vanilla. Some Northwest native tribes as well as European settlers hung vanilla leaf sachets to give their homes a sweet fresh scent. The folded leaf somewhat resembles a Deer’s Foot (or hoof) so that nickname is a little more predictable.

Vanilla Leaf is native to woodland areas from British Columbia to Northern California.

It produces dainty white bottle brush flowers that stand above fan shaped leaves in spring. Plants typically reach 12-18 inches high and spread as a tall groundcover over time. They are typically found growing in soils rich in organic material shed to the forest floor.

Some of my gardening friends have said that this plant is very difficult to grow successfully in a home garden bed. I have not tried that. My plant has been in a pot for about four years and was planted in a mix of potting soil with woodchips added to lighten the mix. It’s in full shade.

It has been under planted with groundcovers and ferns over the years so it has proven it can succeed with root competition. It sailed through our recent cold snowy winter and was one of the first plants to break ground when it started to warm. In fact it has flourished since the day I planted it!

When I first saw this plant I loved the foliage. I wanted to grow it in a pot so that the foliage would be closer to eye level. I didn’t know that it might be difficult to grow in a home garden. I didn’t know it would do well in a pot. I was just plain lucky that it liked growing in that container, with the soil I mixed, in that location, in my garden. It was a happy accident!

Gardening is made up of lots of happy accidents, trial and error, good and bad luck. It’s a difficult world for those who relish predictability and lean towards perfectionism.

So based on my experience and what my fellow gardeners have said… if you were going to add a Vanilla Leaf plant to your garden I would recommend growing it in a good sized pot for a few years.

Enjoy those beautiful leaves close up. I think your chances of success would be greater than planting directly in a garden bed. The plant can always be moved to an in ground location when you’re ready to relocate it and perhaps take a chance on its well-being!

The bottom line may be that we’ve found another great plant for the container garden. That’s a good thing!

(Botanical Name: Achlys tryphylla)

Shoreline resident benefits from the generosity of others

Sophia poses with Irons BC crew
More sections of the railing were installed after this photo

On Saturday, May 18, 2019, Shoreline resident Sophia along with approximately 40 other families throughout King and Snohomish Counties were the recipients of a free wheelchair ramp built as part of the Master Builders Association’s Rampathon Event.

Ramp Captain Joseph Irons, General Manager of Irons Brothers Construction and Past President of the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties (MBA), along with his team of employees and skilled volunteers, designed and constructed a free wheelchair access ramp for the Richmond Highlands resident.

Sophia, who suffered a stroke in her late 20s, uses a power chair to get around her home. She lives at the home of her mother Erica, who is also her full-time caregiver.

Sophia originally had two makeshift ramps to get off the porch
and onto the brick walkway

Unfortunately, the entry to the residence had barriers which made it difficult to enter and exit safely using her power chair.

In April, the team from Irons Brothers Construction, including Production Manager, Cody Ross, met with Erica and Sophia and developed a design and construction plan to create a safe and accessible wheelchair ramp at their front entry.

Fortunately, Sophia has full use of the chair inside her home, and now, with a new ramp her Mother and other personnel can attend to her needs, especially in an emergency.

Working and having fun, too.

To build her ramp, the IronsBC team began their staging and prep work for the construction on the afternoon of Friday, May 17th.

Sophia’s ramp consists of a two-step platform that transitions onto their existing brick walkway. On Saturday, the team completed the ramp by adding the platforms, a handrail, concrete landing, and other finish details.

As the ramp is adjacent to their driveway, the team formed and poured a concrete landing pad for smooth transition. A portion of the ramp was built over their existing deck, which was used as a framing foundation and also salvage materials.

The ramp consists of cedar pressure-treated material and plywood. A handrail was added to one side and a curb on the opposite side for safety.

Joseph Irons takes a selfie!

Sophia and Erica maintain a joyful and positive spirit and are very appreciative of the work that Irons Brothers Construction is doing on their behalf. With this new access, Sophia is looking forward to enjoying the outdoors this summer.

This free wheelchair ramp is being built in cooperation with the Master Builders Association’s 26th anniversary philanthropic project, Rampathon.

The project was constructed out of easy to maintain and eye-pleasing materials donated by Dunn Lumber and Irons Brothers Construction.

Said Melissa Irons, "This project is just one small way that our craftsman and volunteers can help impact a local neighbor’s life for the better."

IronsBC maintains the highest commitment to philanthropy and giving back to the local community. At the end of the day, the reward is when Sophia can safely use her power chair outdoors.

Joseph and Melissa Irons, along with the IBC family of staff and volunteers are passionate about helping others in their community and have been involved in Rampathon® over the past 13 years.

Irons Brothers Construction is Committed to Enriching Lives in Our Community with Caring and Craftsmanship.

Special recognition to donors for the 2019 ramp include:
  • Irons Brothers Construction, Inc. for volunteer labor and materials
  • Dunn Lumber for lumber and concrete donation
  • American Insurance Associates for volunteer labor and food

Irons Brothers Construction is celebrating 20 years of business in 2019 with their Design + Build Center showroom located at 1510 NE 170th St, in Shoreline's North City Business District.

Here they showcase universal design, aging in place remodeling, and best construction practices. Company owner, Joseph Irons and team, have their Certified Aging in Place Specialist designations (CAPS) thru the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Certified Living in Place Professional certifications (CLIPP) thru the Living in Place Institute. In each remodel they incorporate universal design principles and practices when possible.

Sports Desk: Shorecrest shines at district track meet

Boys 4x100 relay team. From left: Zach Ridenhour ,
Satchell McKee, Sammy Seliga, and Gabe Nelson

The Northwest District One 3A Track and Field Finals wrapped up late Friday night at Shoreline Stadium, too late for more than the raw results to be posted.

With the light of a new day, there’s time to give pats on the back, tell stories of persistence paying off and obstacles being overcome, and see what’s next for those athletes who qualified for this weekend’s State Championships.

On the boys side, Shorewood finished second behind boys (and girls) champion Edmonds-Woodway, while Shorecrest was fourth.

The Shorecrest girls finished second, with Shorewood coming in fifth.

Two senior Scots, in particular, seemed to epitomize the perseverance and dedication that only the greatest athletes possess.

Sammy Seliga was the lone junior (to three seniors) on last year’s 4x100 relay team that missed going to State by an eyelash.

He said, “I knew it was going to be a challenge just getting close to last year's success. But with some persistence and great coaching by the mastermind Coach C, we were able to find great success and now we are going to state!
"This means so much to me because I knew our team last year should’ve made it to state easy, but we had bad luck on the worst day last year. This team has worked so hard to get to state that no matter the outcome I know we accomplished something that’s been driving me for the past year.”

Scots football fans will remember Seliga giving the Shorecrest faithful something to celebrate late in their last game when he ran an interception back the length of the field for the Scots’ only score, in a lopsided season-ending playoff loss to mighty Bellevue.

800 Champ Lauren Block (R) and second-place
finisher Livia Glascock.JPG
Lauren Block won the girls 800 Friday night for the third consecutive year.

Ho-hum, you say?

Hardly.

The University of Portland-bound runner nursed a foot injury during the winter that curtailed her preseason training by a good measure, and if that wasn’t enough, she was diagnosed with mononucleosis on March 20.

On top of that, she then spent three days in the hospital with pancreatitis.

Friday night she broke to the lead in the first 100 meters and never looked back, beating second-place teammate Livia Glascock by nearly six seconds.

Block came up two seconds short of setting the school record, but she’ll get at least one more crack at it next weekend at State.

Block reflected on her HS track career that is rapidly coming to a close.

“My sophomore year, I was really excited about winning the 800 for the first time. I knew after that year that I wanted to defend my title for the next two years, but it wasn’t something I was completely sure could happen until I did it last night.
"In the hospital, I wrote down the two things I still wanted to do this season despite having mono: win districts in the 800 and get the school record. Hopefully, I get my second goal next week, but it feels good to have at least achieved one of them so far.”

Block and Glascock on the Victory Stand

Here’s a list of all the SC athletes (and their events) who will compete at State next Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Mount Tahoma HS.

Lorri Bodi running for Lake Forest Park City Council

Lorri Bodi, candidate for
Lake Forest Park City Council

Lorri Bodi, an experienced environmental lawyer and conservation program manager, filed this week as a candidate for Lake Forest Park City Council Position 2, running against a three-term incumbent.

Bodi, a long-time resident, recently retired and is looking to give back by supporting the community where she has raised her family.

She was motivated to run for City Council by the major challenges facing LFP, including pressure for growth and density, increased traffic, Sound Transit development, and loss of green space.

She explains “I would like to be a new voice on the City Council to preserve our neighborhoods and small city character in the face of these challenges.
"I want to bring a fresh perspective to the Council’s recent direction by supporting reasonable (not overbearing) growth, using our financial resources wisely, and conserving our streams and green spaces.”

Over the summer, Bodi will be attending neighborhood events and listening to neighbors concerns and suggestions for LFP.

The Power of One Volunteer Program, a partnership of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center and Shoreline Public Schools, was presented a Community Leadership Award by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) Region 110 (King County) at the group’s annual awards luncheon on Friday, May 17 at the Puget Sound Educational District in Renton.

The award is given “In Recognition of Outstanding Community Leadership and Contributions to the Improvement of Public Education.”

The Power of One Volunteer Program was nominated by School Superintendent, Rebecca Miner for their work and collaboration in placing volunteers throughout Shoreline schools.

“We were honored to be able to recognize this incredible group for their contributions to our schools and the educational support they provide to our students and teachers,” said Superintendent Miner.

The program, sponsored by the Shoreline Senior Center, has over 60 volunteers who work in classrooms with teachers and, most often, with students on a one-to-one basis to enhance their learning experience.

The volunteer program develops and supports senior citizen volunteers to serve in Shoreline elementary schools. The program, which has been in existence since 1996, matches volunteers to rewarding volunteer opportunities throughout the schools.

They recruit, train, mentor and support each of the volunteers to ensure they are successful in supporting all students. Their consistent presence in the classroom also allows the volunteers and students to build strong intergenerational relationships that enrich the lives of both.

Terry Monette, the Volunteer Coordinator, stated that “this has been a very successful year for the program. We have placed more volunteers and have had a very positive response from both teachers and students.
"More importantly, I think the volunteers have had great joy in participating in the schools and interacting with both teachers and students."

Hibbs, who supervises the Bastyr naturopathic clinic at the Senior Center, is an avid dahlia grower. Last year, bouquets of mixed dahlias were available in return for a donation at the Senior Center and at the Ridgecrest Pub. The Ridgecrest Pub generously matched donations, and all collections went to the Senior Center.

Neighbors and friends were also able to request custom bouquets for a donation, including larger numbers of blossoms for events, from Hibbs at home.

In all, the dahlias brought in over $2500 for the Senior Center’s general fund in 2018.

It's planting time now. Hibbs has planted his dahlia beds with 110 varieties, and has the tubers of about 70 varieties left over this year.

Says Hibbs, I'm going to kick off the 2019 Dahlias For Seniors Project by having a tuber event at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center from 9-11am on Monday May 20.
With the warm Spring we’ve had, dahlias should be blooming by mid-July.

Once the blooming season starts, fresh blooms will be delivered on Mondays and Thursdays to the Senior Center, and Tuesdays - Fridays - Sundays to the Ridgecrest Pub, 520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155.

The Senior Center is in the stand-alone building at the south end of the Shoreline Center, at 1st NE and NE 185th.
