Coming soon: the Aurora Borealis

Coming soon - the Aurora Borealis
Photo from Google

By Diane Hettrick

Tyler Myers' company owns businesses from Alaska to Oregon. His businesses are diverse, including grocers, hardware stores, service stations, and a pub on Camano Island.

Along the way, they've grown to include successful land development, store remodeling, and property management.

Myers lives in north Seattle and frequently drives through Shoreline on Aurora. The lease sign on the Drift On Inn at 167th immediately caught his eye, and within a short period of time he had a lease on the property.

Soon the Drift On Inn will open as an entirely new business - the Aurora Borealis.

The Borealis will be a restaurant and event space, booking musicians and comedians. The exterior of the building will remain the same, but the interior is in the process of extensive renovation and remodeling.

Every square inch of the main floor has been modeled and will be a large restaurant. A kitchen has been added and plans are to serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. 12 kinds of beer, wine, and cocktails will be on the menu.

Downstairs will be an event space with a stage where the old casino used to be. People will be able to rent it for class reunions or banquets. There will be three spaces which can be used for meetings or smaller private events.

One of the great advantages of the site is access to parking. The Borealis will share the parking lot in back with Hollywood Casino, some 250 spaces.

Myers hopes to open the Borealis within a few months. The address is 16708 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline, WA 98133

Update 4-17-19: No casino! Restaurant and event space.

Letter to the Editor: Shoreline Community College teachers plan walk out Tuesday

To the Editor:

This Tuesday, Shoreline Community College teachers are walking out. As an adjunct instructor at Shoreline, and a resident of this city, I’m writing to reach out to my community for support.

Because I both teach and work in Shoreline, I have seen firsthand the value SCC holds for our city. Community colleges offer an affordable option for people of all ages and backgrounds to continue their education without taking on mountains of student debt, and students feel a sense of community that is often missing from large universities.

However, the state of community colleges is bleak: over 70% of faculty are adjuncts, we have quarter-to-quarter contracts, minimal job security, and dismal pay. Adjunct faculty are often forced to teach at multiple colleges, take additional part-time jobs, and file for unemployment over breaks. Classes can be cancelled at the last minute, leaving faculty struggling to pay their rent. Our full-time counterparts are struggling too.

Underfunding has many negative impacts on our amazing students as well: increased student tuition, decreased support services, and canceled classes. Students might have an instructor who is barely on campus because she is commuting between three different schools.

While K-12 teacher walkouts have been getting a lot of press recently, community colleges are ignored despite the critical role we play in educating our citizens. They are being strangled and the system must change if they are to survive, but legislators don’t listen. We—students, faculty, staff—want to feel valued, but they show us we are not. Thus, multiple colleges are staging a walkout on April 16th. SCC will lead a teach-in on campus in the morning, and then we’ll march down to 160th and Aurora in the afternoon. So if you see us, honk in support! Then contact your legislators before April 28th and tell them to REINVEST in our community and technical colleges.

LFP Nurse's editorial: State legislation urgently needed to protect patient safety

Lake Forest Park resident and pediatric nurse Lindsey Kirsch, BSN, RN has an article in the Tacoma Weekly News about the dangers of fatigue for medical workers in hospitals (State legislation urgently needed to protect patient safety).

In a hospital setting, doctors order medications and then the orders are sent to the pharmacy for approval. Nurses are the last line of defense for our patients, and often it is up to us to catch an error.
I have seen firsthand the wrong medication prescribed, doses being off by 100-fold, and critical medications not being prescribed at all.
Catching these errors can be a matter of life and death, and nurses need to be constantly on our toes, closely reviewing all the notes for every patient.
But when we go for long periods without breaks, our ability to stay focused and alert is severely diminished.

She advocates for the passage of SHB 1155, currently in the hands of the state senate.

Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotary clubs were part of an ambitious and successful area Rotary project to pick up litter from the length of the Interurban Trail - all 22 miles of it.

They had two hours, on Saturday, April 13, from 10am to noon.

Each club was assigned a section of the Trail. Shoreline and Lake Forest Park Rotary clubs took care of the Trail from N 200th at Echo Lake Park to N 165th at Darnall Park behind Aqua Quip on Aurora.

In The Garden Now…..Three-Leaf Cardamine

Cardamine
Text and Photo
by Victoria Gilleland

This is one of my favorite European impThree-Leaf Cardamine is a dainty looking evergreen groundcover that flourishes in shade.

Tiny white flowers dance above the foliage in spring and may bloom again in summer if plants have had ample summer water.

As far as wildlife goes bees and other pollinators love this plant and deer tend to leave it alone. Woo Who!

Plants typically form a neat circular clump about a foot across and six inches high.

The white cup shaped flowers are held on wiry stems above the foliage. Cardamine grows happily in clay or sandy soils and is quite drought tolerant once established.

A shady woodland garden is the perfect place to grow this little gem. If you could use a good looking easy care ground cover for that shady spot in the garden don’t pass this one up!

(Botanical Name: Cardamine trifolia)

Free disaster preparation kits from Allstate agents

With last year’s active wildfire season and severe weather events in the Northwest, local Allstate agents are giving away over 10,000 disaster preparedness kits starting Monday, April 15 across Washington, Oregon and Idaho to better prepare families and communities for disasters of all kinds.

There are 135 participating agencies in 65 cities across Washington State.

Participating Shoreline Allstate Agencies

Together with The Allstate Foundation, participating agents are also donating $200,000 to American Red Cross chapters across the Northwest to support relief efforts.

“Even though it might be the last thing on your mind, a disaster can strike anywhere at any time,” said local Allstate agency staff Kristian Landon-Suson.
“Most people—85 percent—aren’t prepared for a disaster, so local Allstate agents are here to help our neighbors be more prepared in the event of a sudden disaster.”

This is especially relevant for Washington residents, as wildfire season starts to heat up. Washington is ranked sixth on the list of top 10 “Most Wildfire Prone States,” according to the Insurance Information Institute, and the state has 154,900 households at high or extreme risk from wildfires.

In 2018, 1,743 wildfires burned across Washington State, up 397 from 2017, scorching 438,834 acres, an increase of 34,611 acres.

“With wildfire season on the horizon and never knowing when a disaster might strike, building a kit is a great place to start on the path to preparedness. A next step would be creating a household evacuation plan that includes a list of emergency contacts and a designated meeting location in the event of a disaster,” Suson said.

Washington residents can stop by any participating Allstate agency to get a free disaster kit, while supplies last, that includes a hand-crank flashlight, first-aid kit and a whistle to signal for help.

For more information on how you and your community can get prepared for a disaster, contact your local American Red Cross chapter.

Class: Stop the Bleed - Thursday May 9 - sign up now

MERIDIAN PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTSA PRESENTS:
THURSDAY, MAY 9, 2019, 6:30-8:00 PM IN THE MP SCHOOL LIBRARY

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

Blood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty events, like mass shootings, terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Significant external bleeding can also result from everyday events such as a motorcycle crash, or industrial accident.

Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving. That’s why we’re teaming up with volunteer coordinators Matt Alford, April Ingle, and Edmonds-based Disaster Medicine Project to train individuals to be informed bystanders.

This free 1.5 hour course teaches basic life-saving medical interventions, including a brief Active Shooter preparedness presentation and methods to control bleeding.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the principles of your response during an active shooter event.
  • Describe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.
  • Demonstrate wound packing and learn about topical hemostatic dressings.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.
If you are interested in signing up for this event, please contact April Ingle at stopthebleed.shoreline@gmail.com . We have space for 30 participants (adults only please).

Our intention is to offer this monthly for the rest of the school year, so if you
don’t make this class, you will be first for the next one on JUNE 6.

We look forward to serving you and strengthening our community!

Meridian Park Elementary is located at 17077 Meridian Ave N, Shoreline 98133.

Architect's drawing of Parkwood Elementary

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Steven H. Robinson
Parkwood 1st floor
Parkwood 2nd floor
All the exterior walls are up at the new Parkwood Elementary building at N 155th St and Meridian Ave N, so it's now possible to get a sense of what the school will look like.

It's like no other school in Shoreline, private or public. It looks like a collection of boxes, both square and rectangle, pushed together.

There appear to be two buildings at an angle to each other. No matter where you are standing, you looks a different building.

Roofs are angled from one side to the other, some going different directions from the others.

Two story interior with balconies and skylights

Inside looks even more different. The two story, open commons area has the volume suggestive of a cathedral with huge skylights allowing natural light to flood the area.

I suggest you look at the 1.5 minute video from the school district with interviews of the project manager Dan Stevens and the principal, Ann Torres. HERE

Here's a walk around the outside of part of the building:

In the video, Principal Torres talks about the months of planning that went into the building, with input from all groups and how excited they all are about the new building.

The new school will be 64,800 square feet with a capacity for 500 students. The project's architect is DLR Architects and the contractor is Allied Construction. The estimated completion date is August 2019. The total estimated project cost is $46,909,000.

Parkwood Elementary is housed at the North City Elementary building during construction.

Visit the Parkwood Elementary School websiteOpens a New Window. for additional school construction information.

Rob Oxford: From Highlander to Hollywood – Rainn Wilson at The Paramount Theatre May 30th

More information HERE

By Rob Oxford

On Thursday May 30, 2019, former Shorecrest Highlander turned Hollywood Leading Man Rainn Wilson will return to Seattle for a night of comedy and music.

Whether this means Rainn will be performing a bassoon solo has yet to be determined, but one can always hope. Regardless, the night is sure to be filled with fun and frivolity.

Although he didn’t graduate from Shorecrest, local residents and SCHS Alum have no problem calling Mr. Wilson “one of (their) own.”

Before becoming a successful actor, husband and father, he strolled the hallowed halls of Kellogg Middle School and then Shorecrest and as a member of the orchestra and wind ensemble, left an indelible impression on those with whom he shared a classroom.

After finding his way to Hollywood, Rainn first appeared onscreen in an episode of the soap opera “One Life to Live” and then in 1999, made his feature film debut in “Galaxy Quest.”

However, there is no question that it was his portrayal of Dwight Schrute on “The Office,” which garnered him three consecutive Emmy Award nominations, that made him the fan favorite he is today.

Chris Ballew of The Presidents of the
United States and Caspar Babypants

As a sophomore in high school, Rainn was a member of MUN - Model United Nations, a program in which students would adopt a specific country, in his case Cameroon, and then diagnose and analyze realistic problems.

After doing so, the students would represent their country in mock debates and discussions similar to those held on the floor of the “real” United Nations.

Although one would hope the numbers have changed somewhat since 1982, the quality of health care in Cameroon is generally low. Life expectancy at birth is estimated to be 56 years, with 48 healthy life years expected. Fertility rates remain high with an average of 4.8 births per woman and an average mother's age of 19.7 years old at first birth.

Although it has one of the highest school attendance rates in Africa, girls attend school less regularly than boys because of cultural attitudes, domestic duties, early marriage, pregnancy, and sexual harassment. School attendance in Cameroon is also affected by child labor. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that 56% of children aged 5 to 14 were working children and that almost 53% of children aged 7 to 14 combined work and school. Among its many other social and economic difficulties, the World Health Organization reports there is only one doctor for every 5,000 people in Cameroon.

Joel McHale

Statistics such as these, as well as other reported atrocities prevalent in most third world countries, have contributed to Rainn’s interest in donating his time, energy and resources to organizations like Lidè Haiti, an educational initiative he co-founded in 2013.

Mr. Wilson has also been a board member, advocate and champion of the Mona Foundation for the past 10 years. Mona Foundation supports grassroots initiatives that provide education to all children, increase opportunities for women and girls, and encourage service to the community.

With Rainn’s advocacy and help, in 2018 Mona Foundation supported the education and empowerment of 411,324 students in 16 countries spanning 10 countries including US, Haiti, Panama, Brazil, India, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Gambia, and Uganda.

Named after Mona Mahmudnizhad, an Iranian school student who was executed in 1983 for her religious beliefs – Baha’i – and for teaching classes to children. Mr. Wilson, who is also a follower of the Baha’i faith, has enlisted the help of some of his neighborhood friends for the benefit on May 30th.

All of the performers including fellow Husky Joel McHale of “Almost Live” fame, Chris Ballew of The Presidents of the United States and Caspar Babypants, The Toronto Youth Choir and several as of yet unnamed “Special Mystery Guests,” have agreed to donate their time and talent for this worthy cause.

This event is sure to sell out so secure your tickets today.

Enjoy an evening of laughter and song while knowing that in countries like those we have mentioned above, thousands of young women will be singing YOUR praises because of your support.

Friends of Richmond Beach Library selected as Community Partner for Shoreline School District

Saturday, April 13, 2019

The Friends of Richmond Beach Library has been honored by the Shoreline School District as its Community Partner of the year. The award is one of 10 given each year by the school district. This year 137 individuals and organizations were nominated for awards. (See article)

“These staff members, volunteers and community members represent the best of who we are as a school community,” said Shoreline Superintendent Rebecca Miner.
“Their focus and passion for the success of every student in our district was evident in the thoughtful nominations made on their behalf. I look forward to celebrating them and the incredible groups of employees and volunteers they represent.”

Lynn Evans, Board Member

Friends’ board member Lynn Evans said,
“We are very honored to receive this award. We each volunteer to support the work of our librarians. Their efforts to reach out to the community in support of literacy is just fantastic!
"We are so proud of their dedication and commitment to the community that it’s a real honor to be able to contribute to their success.”

The Friends of Richmond Beach Library was nominated for this award by Anne Dame, librarian at Einstein Middle School. Anne works closely with Richmond Beach Library librarian Aarene Storms on developing appropriate programing for the students. In her nomination letter, Anne wrote:

“For the past 8 years, Richmond Beach Friends of the Library has supported all of the clubs that I have run in the library here at Einstein Middle school including Pizza and Books, The WRITE Stuff, and Anime Club.
"The Friends of RB Library support the library, the community, and the citizens by providing money as needed for twice-monthly after-school programs at Einstein Middle School, which finances pizza and other snacks for teen program participants.
"The Friends continually ask the question, ‘How can we help more?’ This kindly pestering has led to the creation of a brand-new program to promote literacy and get books into the hands of Richmond Beach readers: the Richmond Beach Read-a-Thon, which debuts in April 2019.”

An organization made up of community volunteers, the Friends of Richmond Beach Library is dedicated to improving literacy and building community in Richmond Beach.

Formed in 1899, the Friends funds library activities including such popular programs as the monthly book club and Wisdom Café for adults, Pizza and Books in the school for teens, and storytellers, music, and STEM programs for children.

This is made possible by money raised through memberships, book donations from the community which are then sold at its books sales, and its annual Arts and Crafts Show.
