70th anniversary of 1949 earthquake

Seattle Municipal Archives from Seattle, WA

By Diane Hettrick

April 13, 2019 is the 70th anniversary of the (according to History Link) "largest earthquake in Puget Sound since non-Indian people started to immigrate and settle along its shores."

The History Link article (Earthquake hits Puget Sound area...) says that "In King County, the quake's strongest ground shaking was in Auburn, Richmond Beach, and in parts of Seattle."

I don't remember ever hearing a name for it other than "the 1949 earthquake." The Burke Museum at the UW (The Big One) calls it the "Olympia earthquake".

1949 - April 13 - Centered on Olympia. Deep (30-40 miles). Magnitude 7.1 with a modified Mercalli of VIII. Substantial damage to masonry buildings with inferior mortar. Differential ground movement.
Most damage in Seattle was concentrated in areas of filled ground around Pioneer Square area, where many older masonry buildings suffered. Washington schools sustained a disproportionately high level of damage.
Thirty schools, normally serving 10,000 students, were damaged. Ten condemned and permanently closed.

Who was living in Richmond Beach at the time? Would you like to share your memories? Send them to Editor@ShorelineAreaNews.com

Not a beaver! Extended closure of NE 180th St in the 3300 block of Lake Forest Park

Area to avoid in Lake Forest Park

Update: NE 180th St was reopened around 1pm on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

Part of the mess on NE 180th

NE 180th St in the 3300 block of Lake Forest Park is CLOSED. Find another route.

Apparently multiple trees have fallen or are in danger of falling across NE 180th St in Lake Forest Park.

The police department says "This is a big mess!!"

After surveying the situation, Public Works has determined there are a number of public safety issues which involve private property owners.

The City is working with these property owners and assisting in any way they can.

Unfortunately, due to the complexity of the issues, we anticipate this road closure to extend through the weekend.
Please plan accordingly and use alternate routes. We will advise the public when the road is reopened.

Scam season and tricksters abound

By Diane Hettrick

We actually won a prize from Publishers Clearing House last year. We were notified by an email, then by a letter which asked for one bit of information which seemed very harmless. After that, we received a check, which our bank refused to cash - but that's another story.

My point is that no one called us up to say we had won and asked for our bank account, visa, social security, first born child or anything else like that. And we did get the money.

I could be condescending about people who fall for scams, but I have a perfectly intelligent and successful friend who forwarded one of those "Bill Gates will give you money if you forward this email" things. Anybody can get sucked in.

There are a couple of scams operating right now that have public agencies alarmed enough to issue warnings.

Lake Forest Park Police warn about Jury Duty scam

We have received a number of calls from residents about a “Jury Duty” Scam. The folks who reported this scam said the caller identified himself as either a “Deputy Ward” or “Court Officer Ward” advising them they had missed jury duty and had a warrant for their arrest. They asked for credit/debit card payment and were told to respond to our station.

Remember, this is always a SCAM!!! NEVER give your personal or financial information to someone you don’t know over the phone. Please share this far and wide, lets help others avoid potential scammers.

The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) is warning Medicare recipients not to participate in genetic testing or cancer screenings performed at community events.

Here are some good tips to follow:

  • Do not give out your Medicare number or Social Security number and be cautious of unsolicited requests.
  • Be suspicious of anyone claiming that genetic tests and cancer screenings are at no cost to you.
  • Genetic tests and cancer screenings must be medically necessary and your doctor must order them to be covered by Medicare.
  • Monitor your Medicare Summary Notice to see if there are any services you didn’t have or didn’t want but were billed for.
  • If you have questions or suspect fraud or abuse, call 1-800-562-6900 and ask to speak with SHIBA.
And finally - the Windows scam is coming back around

I have gotten multiple calls on this one. The creepy part is that they have spoofed our caller ID perfectly. The caller ID is our name and phone number. The first time it happened I was asleep. I looked at the phone and got very befuddled about how I could get a call from a phone number I was on. The man (a real person, not a recording) started his spiel about how my computer was infected and he could help me. I didn't quite understand what he was saying - heavy accent, talking fast, I'm still asleep. I said "helllllo?" in a voice clogged with sleep.

He talked some more and then said "Can you hear me?" I thought that not hearing him was a good idea so I repeated "helllllo?" again. Every time he paused, I said "helllllo?" Finally he yelled "How can you waste my time like this!!" and slammed the phone down.

Sadly, I got five more calls. The last one my husband answered - and told the guy we have Macs and take us off the call list. Oddly, it seems to have worked.

Robotics Students Advance for the 10th consecutive year to FIRST® World Championships in Houston April 17-20

CyberKnights

By Hannah Te, King's High School junior, member of CyberKnights

Exploring in a galaxy far, far away is the CyberKnights, from King’s High School in Seattle. We are a group of students on a robotics team that work cohesively together to build a unique competitive robot.

The organization that we are part of is called FIRST® Robotics -- For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. They provide opportunities for teams like us to build our dreams into reality. During this build season, we developed robots according to this year’s game specifications and theme: Destination: Deep Space, presented by the Boeing Company.

CyberKnights robot goes out to do battle

The Pacific Northwest District Championship consists of teams from Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Out of 155 teams, only 64 teams qualified to compete at the District Championship.

We placed 2nd as one of the highest scoring bots in our district. Robotics competitions run similarly to basketball tournaments: each team plays against each other, and whoever wins that set of matches proceeds. The statistics from our qualification match performance are pretty impressive with a record of 10-2.

We would like to thank Aumsville High School, McMinnville High School, and Newport High School for competing with us in our final rounds.

Finally, after all of these statistics and facts comes the best part: we qualified to go to the Houston FIRST World Championships for the 11th consecutive year!

For more information about CyberKnights on Instagram (@cyberknights), Twitter (@frcteam4911), and Facebook (@King’s High School FRC Robotics 4911)

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

FIRST is More Than Robots. FIRST participation is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields, inspire them to become leaders and innovators and enhance their 21st-century work-life skills.

Team cheer - getting ready for battle

About CyberKnights
The CyberKnights seek to inspire interest and passion for science and technology while preparing students to become industry leaders in tomorrow’s competitive global marketplace.

The King’s High School’s award-winning robotics program serves as an educational community within King’s Schools as well as FIRST Robotics.

The CyberKnights serve as the founding team of King’s Robotics, a group of FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST Tech Challenge, FIRST Lego League, and FIRST Lego League Jr. teams. In its endeavor to successfully embody FIRST values and goals, the CyberKnights seek to create a team culture that sustains their community for years to come.

Inspection

From team recruitment, developing student leaders, maintaining a gender-equal team, serving as FIRST ambassadors in outreach, collaborating with each other in a student-led environment and asking corporations to support them as the next generation of leaders, the CyberKnights strive to be an organization of people impacting the world for FIRST.

Starting in 2009 in FIRST Tech Challenge with eight students, the CyberKnights have inspired over 10% of King’s Schools K-12 students to participate in FIRST programs. CyberKnights Alumni have gone on to pursue fields in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), and return to invest in the program as mentors for the current team. The team continues to develop its members in leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.

The Gallery at Town Center Presents: Judith Heim and maëry lanahan

Judith Heim and maëry lanahan
April 2 - May 11, 2019

The Gallery at Town Center, Lake Forest Park is exhibiting a selection of works by Collage/Acrylic Artist Judith Heim and Abstract Oil Painter maëry lanahan. See these works and the creations of over 80 other local artists during Gallery at Town Center hours: Tuesday – Saturday, Noon to 5pm. Town Center is at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Judith Heim

I am a multidisciplinary artist. As a designer, the language of line and shape informs my work. As a fine artist, spontaneity is very important to me visually. Most of my imagery is influenced by the seen & unseen world around me, dream imagery, and natural forms. I decided early on, that I did not want my art to be a noun. I like to create visual metaphors and maybe even a dangling participle or two! I see it all as a celebration of the journey.

I work in a variety of mediums. Collage is becoming more and more important to me as a way of expressing the colors, rich textures, shared experiences and imaginings of life. I look for common threads. I also create 3-d assemblages out of found objects and recycled treasures. The work I am submitting is from a new series utilizing the technique of “buried collage”. I apply a “crazy quilt” of collage papers, covering the substrate (wood cradle board). I isolated subject matter and paint out the negative space with acrylic paint.

A lifetime resident of the Pacific Northwest, I savor the mystical beauty of the “wild lands” as well as the eclectic and slightly off-beat culture of Seattle. I think this explains the range of reflection and whimsy found in my work.

maëry lanahan

There are so many hidden things going on in everyday life. So many bits of beauty that go unnoticed, so many words left unsaid. I am compelled to make art that illustrates life beyond the surface.

What does a promise look like? How about a conversation between two people that lasts a lifetime? I try to feel these types of concepts on a cellular level, take them inside and make art about them.

I use non-representational color and form to illustrate emotions, archetypes, psychological exchanges, or other such things that are not otherwise visible to us. Because I choose when to show gravity, perspective, color and light, I am able to emote through them. I glaze thin layers of oil paint to create rich and luminescent shapes that interrelate based on the concept I have in mind for the piece.

It is my goal, as an artist, to propose these conceptual paintings as authentically as I can. I am always excited to hear how the viewers see it. In some ways it is like cloud watching, we tend to see in the clouds what is already within us. In this way, my art is about discovery.

maëry lanahan was born and raised in the midwest. She received her BAE from The Ohio State University in 2000. She has exhibited in Ohio and Washington and has artwork in many private collections across the U.S.

maëry lanahan now lives and works in Shoreline, Washington with her husband and 3 children.

The Gallery at Town Center is a program of the Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Arts Council and is located inside the Lake Forest Park Town Center on the lower level. 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155.

Country Village in Bothell is no more

Country Village in Bothell

By Diane Hettrick

Did you ever go to Country Village in Bothell? From Lake Forest Park you follow Bothell Way to the center of Bothell, turn left, drive a couple of miles and it was on your left.

I was enchanted and disoriented the first time I went there. It felt like an amusement park. An eccentric collection of charming little buildings, each with a different business. Way in the back there was a candy shop with fantastic fudge. There were crafters right next to therapy offices. No - not art therapy - at least not that I saw.

The layout of the site was random and the colors were as eccentric as the layout and the shapes of the buildings.

I don't remember the 16 foot high spotted chicken, but I haven't been there for a long time.

But now it's being demolished and a mega housing unit will be built on the site.

According to Bothell development services manager Jeff Smith, Pulte (the developer) will remove the pond, restore Little Swamp Creek and build a “promenade” walkway.

Tenants were notified a long time ago and most have found new homes - a couple landed in Town Center in Lake Forest Park.

Country Village plans to hold a big public auction for some of its iconic items: facades, lamp posts, murals, cabooses and other memorabilia.

Crosscut published a long article about Country Village - worth reading, I think. HERE.

We look forward to another successful show next year!
