Sound Transit is offsetting impacts to wetlands as a result of light rail construction in Shoreline by creating new wetlands at Ronald Bog Park on N 175th and I-5. (see previous article)

The first step in constructing the Ronald Bog Wetland Mitigation Site was to move Michael Sweeney’s The Kiss to a new location.

Workers constructed a new earthen mound approximately 200 feet east from the sculpture's current location and then carefully transferred the sculpture to the new mound.

The entrance to the park was reconfigured with access to The Kiss. The sculpture is still visible from the Bog.

All Twisted Up About Gerrymandering?

Jane Fellows as Mary Ellen McCaffree
in Many Maps, One Voice
Many Maps, One Voice, a short and informative history of redistricting in Washington State, will be shown in two performances at the Everett PUD building’s auditorium on April 6, 2019 at 7:00pm and again on April 7 at 2:00pm.

Tickets are available online, starting at $5 for students.

The one-woman play, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Snohomish County and produced by Politics of the Possible in Action, engages the audience—educators, students, elected officials and the general public — with the challenges of redistricting.

Actor Jane Fellows
This lively and entertaining production is based on the actual experiences of four-term legislator, Mary Ellen McCaffree, played by veteran stage actor Jane Fellows.

McCaffree was a League member in Seattle in the 1960s who advocated for more equitable school funding.

She became well known and respected for her efforts, so much so that both political parties asked her to run for the legislature.

She did so, was elected, and then fought to redistrict the state for the sake of education funding.

Mary Ellen McCaffree
McCaffree wrote a book about her experience in the Legislature, Politics of the Possible co-authored by Anne McNamee Corbett.

From this book the play was developed.

With redistricting about to happen again in 2021, this one-woman play couldn’t be more timely or relevant.

Many Maps, One Voice, is a short history of how redistricting was done in the '60s.

The play, with references to Governor Rossellini, Senator Slade Gorton, Governor Dan Evans, and other politicos will appeal to history buffs.

Importantly, the play brings audiences a deeper understanding of what citizens need to do in the future to ensure that redistricting is fair.

Studded tire removal deadline is March 31

Starting midnight April 1, drivers with
studded tires face a $136 fine
With a record-setting winter finally in the history books, the arrival of spring means drivers in Washington have until Sunday, March 31, 2019 to remove studded tires.

The Washington State Department of Transportation reminds drivers that state law requires all studded tires to be removed by the end of the day March 31.

Starting at midnight on Monday, April 1, drivers with studded tires face a $136 fine.

Studded tires also damage pavement, so removing them promptly after winter has passed helps preserve state roadways. Tire removal services can get crowded near the removal deadline, so please plan accordingly.

WSDOT will not extend the studded tire deadline this year, but crews continue to monitor roads, passes, and forecasts and work to quickly clear any late season snow or ice.

Travelers are always advised to “know before you go” by checking road conditions before heading out and staying up-to-date on changes by using WSDOT’s social media and email alert tools or calling the 5-1-1 road conditions report.

Washington and Oregon share the same studded tire removal deadline. Other states may have later dates, but the Washington law applies to all drivers in the state, even visitors. No personal exemptions or waivers are issued.

More information about studded tire regulations in Washington is available online.

Öngtupqa musician Gary Stroutsos shares cultural connection to Grand Canyon on the park’s 100th anniversary

Shoreline musician Gary Stroutsos

In celebration of the centennial of the Grand Canyon’s designation as a national park, Shoreline musician Gary Stroutsos will present an evening about traditional Hopi music and the making of the album and accompanying documentary, Öngtupqa.

Öngtupqa - the Hopi name for Grand Canyon - is the creation of musicians Clark Tenakhongva, Vice Chairman of the Hopi Tribe and renowned traditional singer, Stroutsos playing the Hopi long flute, and Matthew Nelson playing clay pot percussion.

The trio recorded the album inside the Grand Canyon’s Desert View Watchtower, a stone edifice located on the south rim of the canyon, whose architecture is inspired by Puebloan ruins.

In conjunction, a documentary film about the artists’ cultural connections to the Grand Canyon and the ancient music from the Four Corners region of the canyon was released last fall. It has received recognitions and awards at several film festivals.

The event is Thursday April 11, 2019 at 6:30pm in the Edmonds Plaza Room, located at 650 Main St, just above the Edmonds Library. The program is presented by Edmonds Library with support from the Edmonds Arts Commission. Admission is free. More information about Öngtupqa HERE.

It's all a matter of timing; Steve Robinson and the Viking cruise ship

Aurora Borealis in Tromsø, Norway

Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Steve Robinson and his wife Leslie went on a Northern Lights cruise in Norway, up to the arctic circle January 23 - February 8, 2019.

They were on the Viking Sky cruise ship. Steve came home with beautiful photos of the skies full of moving green light.

The Viking Sky cruise ship

On Saturday, March 23, 2019, that same ship on that same cruise nearly met with disaster. The engines malfunctioned, stranding the ship in rough, frigid waters, in the middle of a storm. The ship was in danger of running aground. Waves crashed through windows, sweeping passengers across the floor. Water came up under their feet.

Search and Rescue boat

Steve photographed a Search And Rescue (SAR) ship in Stavanger, Norway, possibly one involved with the rescue operation. However, the seas were too rough for them and they turned back to port.

The Viking Sky

The Norwegian authorities were so concerned that they sent helicopters to rescue the passengers, hoisting them one by one up wires. They managed to evacuate 479 people, with 900 more to go, when the ship's crew managed to restart one engine to control the ship enough to keep it off the rocks. They waited out the storm then limped back to port under their own power. (NPR article here)

Steve says that "We also hit some rough water and skipped one port because of winds and waves. The coast of Norway can be rough at times."

Aurora Borealis at Tromsø, Norway

The main draw for the trip is the sight of the Aurora Borealis, which Steve was able to photograph in port at Tromsø, Norway.

What a difference a few weeks makes.

Poem: Welcome Spring

Welcome Spring

Welcome Spring from winter sleep

Beneath the soil buried deep

Greetings bud and new green leaf

From grey and gloom you bring relief

Hello to color bursting ‘bout

As blossoms make their coming out

Just like you sweet newborn lamb

And chirping nest, how glad I am

To welcome spring

Meridian Park PTA presents Stop the Bleed Apr 4

MERIDIAN PARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PTSA PRESENTS
APRIL 4, 2019 6:30 - 8:00 PM IN THE MP SCHOOL LIBRARY

Stop the Bleed is a national awareness campaign and call-to-action. Stop the Bleed is intended to cultivate grassroots efforts that encourage bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.

Blood loss is the leading cause of preventable death in multiple casualty events, like mass shootings, terrorist attacks and earthquakes. Significant external bleeding can also result from everyday events such as a motorcycle crash, or industrial accident.

Rapid control of bleeding at the scene of the event can be life-saving. That’s why we’re teaming up with volunteer coordinators Matt Alford, April Ingle, and Edmonds-based Disaster Medicine Project to train MP families to be informed bystanders.

This free 1.5 hour course teaches basic life-saving medical interventions, including a brief Active Shooter preparedness presentation and methods to control bleeding.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the principles of your response during an active shooter event.
  • Describe the progressive strategy for controlling hemorrhage.
  • Demonstrate wound packing and learn about topical hemostatic dressings.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate application of a tourniquet to the arm and leg.

If you are interested in signing up for this event, please contact April Ingle at stopthebleed.shoreline@gmail.com . We have space for 30 participants (adults only please).

Our intention is to offer this monthly for the rest of the school year, so if you don’t make this class, you will be first for the next one on May 9th.

We look forward to serving you and strengthening our community!

Seattle Times: Shoreline man and his wife are caught behind Trump's travel ban

The Seattle Times: Under the radar, Trump's travel ban keeps families waiting years to reunite in America

Shoreline resident Rad Cyrus has a marriage by video chat. He and his wife Samira were married in February 2015. He came ahead to start a job at Amazon, while she stayed in Tehran, Iran. In June 2015 she applied for a visa to come join him.

Then Donald Trump was elected president and began his series of Muslim bans.

Unlike the second version of the ban, the third grants no automatic exceptions to family members of people in the U.S. Visa applicants must apply for waivers to the ban.
Yet, there is no actual application form.

Cyrus bought a condo in Shoreline, and moved to a new job at Best Buy. Every evening, he and Samira spend several hours on video chat, until it's time for her to go to work.

Many awaiting visas say they are stuck in perpetual limbo, separated from spouses, children and parents without any information about their cases other than they are in “administrative processing.”
