Kellogg Middle School wrestling faced two teams Thursday - and prevailed over both

Sunday, March 17, 2019

Kellogg hosted a pair of schools on Thursday, March 14, 2019 and proved themselves up to the task.

In their first match they faced off against the Eisenhower Patriots. Thanks to the Knights' superior depth they opened the match by receiving three forfeits for an 18-0 lead in the team score.

When Eisenhower did have wrestlers, Kellogg continued their dominance as they expanded their lead to 42-9. Kellogg never let Eisenhower get close thanks to pins from eight different Knight wrestlers, including a lightning quick 17 second pin from Shokan Conway-Yuasa at 103 pounds, as they pulled away for a 78-33 victory.

In the second match of the day, Kellogg faced off against the Guardians of Gateway Middle School.

Early on it was all Gateway as they raced out to a commanding 30-12 lead. Kellogg rebounded by picking up a trio of forfeits and a pin from Ole Burns at 128 pounds to take their first lead at 36-30.

Gateway was not to be denied, though, as they won the next three matches to move back in front. At 167 pounds Kellogg sent out team co-captain Cage Jensen. After his first takedown was nullified because of a slam call Jensen continued to be aggressive, picking up his opponent and taking him down straight to his back for a 36 second pin. The Knight's other co-captain, Ryder Baldwin, followed Jensen at 178 pounds and overwhelmed his opponent to remain perfect on the season and reclaim the team lead at 48-45.  A pin from Ramy Abdalla at 188 pounds and a pair of forfeits gave Kellogg a final come-from-behind victory of 66-45.

Kellogg wrestles next on Monday, March 18, 2019 at Olympic View Middle School.

Destinations: Seattle Kennel Club annual dog show

Text and photos by Wayne Pridemore

The Seattle Kennel Club held their annual dog show this past weekend at CenturyLink Field. There were approximately 1600 dogs registered for the events.

The organization began as the Queen City Dog Club in the late 1890s which transformed into the Seattle Kennel Club.

The show events were Confirmation, Junior Showmanship Obedience, Rally, Agility, Demonstrations, and Tours.

A dog must put its best paw forward to compete against peers in the day's events. That means grooming -- a lot of grooming, if one has a long coat. Just about all of the dogs are accustomed to the routine.

" Everyone thinks they have the best dog and none of them are wrong"
--W.R. Purche

At the show there were dog faces from Affenpinchers to Yorkshire Terriers. Small Chihuahuas' faces to large Mastiffs' faces. All lovable faces.

Shoreline Rotary to hear about Shoreline Fire at Wednesday meeting

Shoreline Fire Chief Cowan
will speak at Shoreline Rotary
Join Shoreline Rotary on Wednesday morning, March 20, 2019 at the Shoreline Community College HUB. The meeting starts at 7:00am with breakfast and camaraderie; the formal program (see below) starts at 7:30am.

Back in the long-ago days, in order for a blazing house fire to be extinguished around here, it had to wait for the Edmonds or the Seattle fire departments to show up.

Unfortunately, it was almost always a moot point by the time they got there. “All over but the shoutin’,” as they say.

But the community put together an outstanding volunteer fire department in the 1930s. This became King County Fire District Number 4 in 1939, and then the bona fide, award-winning Shoreline Fire Department of today.

Our presentation this week will be given by the Shoreline Fire Department’s own Matt Cowan, who was sworn in as the new Fire Chief on June 5, 2013. Chief Cowan also served as the president of the King County Fire Chiefs Association from 2015 to 2017.

He will bring us up-to-date on the projects and programs of our wonderful Fire Department. See you Wednesday, and bring your friends to hear about this great community institution.

Come, be part of “Pilgrimage: a Lenten evening” at Church of the Redeemer on March 31, 2019. The journey starts at 5:30pm with Stations of the Cross.

There is a community dinner at 6:00pm. The journey concludes with a 7:00pm concert.

Interactive Stations of the Cross

The pilgrimage starts at 5:30pm with a symbolic walk with Jesus from his sentencing to his execution. Together, we will sing, pray, and experience Stations of the Cross in a new way.

Community Dinner

Dinner is provided in the Parish Hall at 6:00pm. Donations accepted.

Concert

The 7:00pm concert begins with meditative organ music by J. S. Bach performed by Sheila Bristow, music director at Redeemer. The concert then features Samuel Barber’s “Hermit Songs,” with Marissa Moultrie as soloist. Admission to the concert is by free will donation.

“Hermit Songs” is a 10-song cycle composed in the mid-1950s and premiered by Leontyne Price. Barber took the texts from personal notes by Irish monks in the Middle Ages on a variety of topics.

The cycle begins and ends with the yearning for a truly sacred life. However, the interior songs include musings on beer in heaven, the nature of cats, and promiscuity.

This is the program to conclude this evening of pilgrimage:
  • Lento, from Trio Sonata No. 6, J. S. Bach (1685-1750)
    • Sheila Bristow, organ
  • Hermit Songs, Samuel Barber (1910-1981)
    • Marissa Moultrie, soprano
    • Sheila Bristow, piano

Marissa Moultrie
Marissa Moultrie

This includes the title role in Suor Angelica, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, and Countess Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Marissa is also the winner of this year’s Angela Meade Vocal Competition.

Making paper cranes to send the message “We stand with you” to interned children in Texas

Origami cranes can’t really fly. But Japanese Americans from around the country hope they will bring a message of support to children and parents who are currently interred at the southern border at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas.

To support this national effort, a group of local people will gather upstairs at the Lake Forest Park Town Center on Wednesday, March 20th from 4:00 to 8:00 pm, to make and string paper cranes.

Then, the cranes will be sent to the organizers of the pilgrimage by Japanese Americans to be held on March 30, 2019.

They are taking this action because they can’t forget what happened to loved ones who were interred in their own country, not because of what they did, but because of what they looked like. Painful memories still reverberate from WWII when 110,000 Japanese Americans were incarcerated nationwide from February 19, 1942 to March 20, 1946.

“We want children and families separated and incarcerated in detention sites, or separated by the Muslim travel ban to know that Japanese Americans are fighting for them,” says Michael Ishii of New York, one of the pilgrims who will attend the march.

Early in the day, the pilgrimage will visit the former Crystal City Internment Camp in south Texas, where thousands of Japanese Americans and Japanese Latin Americans were held during World War II. Then, they will march to the Texas detention center where the cranes will be hung on the chain link fence which surrounds the facility.

The South Texas Family Residential Center, located an hour south of San Antonio, is a 2,400-bed facility, the largest detention facility in the nation. Even infants are detained there. Earlier this month 12 babies were released from ICE custody after complaints by immigrant advocates that they were not receiving adequate care.

The infants were described as listless and were not engaged with their surroundings. There were also toddlers who were in even worse conditions. “There is a clear and obvious stunt in development,” according to digital reporter for CBS News, Kate Smith, who reported on the story.

Internment of families affects us all

Sally Yamasaki and Luanne Brown, both of Lake Forest Park, were inspired to offer this event for the Lake Forest Park community and surrounding area where they live.

For Yamasaki and Brown, the incarceration of asylum seekers hits very personally.

Yamasaki recalls, “It’s meaningful to me because my dad was incarcerated during World War II. He was 17 and was supposed to be graduating from Queen Anne high school, but instead he was initially relocated to the horse stalls at the Puyallup Fairgrounds, renamed Camp Harmony. At that time, hardly any people spoke out for this injustice. However, one teacher did come to see him. That gesture struck him deeply."

For Yamasaki, making these cranes is her way of speaking up for the incarcerated children and parents seeking asylum.

"Although we can’t be there for the march, we can still let those who are being held in Texas know that with each crane we make, we send the message, ‘you are not alone.’”

Luanne Brown said,
“When Sally asked me to join her in this effort, I was very pleased to do so. My father served in the WWII in the 278th FABN and he was one of the first officers into Dachau after the camp was liberated. He was stunned by what he saw there, and it impacted the rest of his life in profound ways.
"He told me frequently, ‘Luanne, what happened in Europe during the war could happen here, in this country.’ His words have stayed with me always,” Brown said. “And we must all do what we can to stand against hate, whatever form it takes to make sure my father’s fears don’t come true.”

From the tutorial
The paper crane-making tradition

The Japanese tradition of making 1000 cranes comes from a senbazuru legend that says if you make a 1000 paper cranes you will be granted a wish by the gods. This tradition gained worldwide attention in the 1950s with a Japanese girl, Sadako Sasaki who contracted leukemia from being exposed to radiation from the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

While in the hospital she started folding cranes wishing for her health and peace and healing to all victims of the world. She died when she was 12 having folded over 1000 cranes. Today, her story inspires people from around the world as a symbol of peace, hope, and good wishes to children and others who are ill or need of help in other ways.

The strings of cranes or tsuru from Lake Forest Park will be joined with others from across the country and the world. A donation of cranes is arriving from Japan, too. Paper and string will be supplied, and the folding technique will be demonstrated.

Will you help us fold?

If you’d like to start making paper cranes today or practice how to before the event, this tutorial is will help.

Cranes are being made by people all over the States and are being collected by Grassroots Leadership in Austin, Texas.

The Seattle crane project is sponsored by Seattle Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), APACE, and the Puyallup JACL.

Lake Forest Park Town Center is at the intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE. The group will gather in The Commons on the upper level.

Freight Train

Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Freight train, freight train, run so fast
Please don't tell what train I'm on
They won't know what route I'm going

When I'm dead and in my grave
No more good times here I crave
Place the stones at my head and feet
And tell them all I've gone to sleep

When I die, oh bury me deep
Down at the end of old Chestnut Street
So I can hear old Number Nine
As she comes rolling by

When I die, oh bury me deep
Down at the end of old Chestnut Street
Place the stones at my head and feet
And tell them all I've gone to sleep

Freight train, freight train, run so fast

Please don't tell what train I'm on
They won't know what route I'm going

Development: Updated plans for Shoreline Place

Shoreline Place will be built in four phases

The Shoreline Place development has just released their updated site plan.

Our new design partner, HEWITT (the landscape architects behind U-Village) helped bring more open space to every phase of the redevelopment with more intimate gathering spaces.
Check out the renderings in our video and on the website to see the added all-season-spaces come to life.

You will see a lot of traffic on the Shoreline Place site:
  • The Shoreline Farmers Market will be back in the same location this summer!
  • While we phase into the redevelopment, we have leased a portion of the lower part of the old Sears property to Kiewit, the construction company working on Sound Transit's Lynnwood Link.
  • Shoreline Community College will continue parking in our back lot (slightly different location) and shuttling students, staff, and faculty to campus.
  • We’re also leasing parking stalls to construction workers for projects in the area and two car dealerships - this will keep the lot full and the property safe.

Conceptual phasing and site plan video HERE

Shoreline Place is the site of the old Sears building property on Aurora. Central Market is on the upper level of the site. Central Market owns the land its store sits on and is not part of the redevelopment.
