St. Luke student serves as Senate page

Abbey Williams serves as page in Washington State Senate

Olympia – Abbey Williams, 14, served as a page in the Washington State Senate during the week of February 25, 2019.

Pages are sponsored by the senator from their legislative district, or by another senator in the Legislature. Senator Guy Palumbo, D-Maltby, sponsored Williams’ week in the Legislature.

“It was a pleasure to host Abbey at the Capitol this week,” said Palumbo. “I hope that she was able to learn a lot during her time with us, and that she had a great week!”

The page program offers a hands-on opportunity for students to find out how state government works. The educational experience is furthered by guest speakers. It also includes classes with topics like budget writing and how a bill becomes a law, which culminates in pages creating their own bills in a mock committee setting.

“I enjoyed getting to meet so many new people this week,” said Williams. “Everyone is really nice here.”

Pages also have the opportunity to work on the Senate floor while the Senate is in session. Their maroon coats and credentials allow them access to all parts of the Capitol Campus.

Williams is in 8th grade at St. Luke Middle School, where she plays basketball and volleyball. In her free time, she enjoys reading fiction books.

For more information about the Senate Page Program, contact SenatePageProgram@leg.wa.gov

Rep. Valdez' bill to ban untraceable firearms passes the State House of Representatives

3D printed gun

OLYMPIA – The Washington State House of Representatives approved a ban on undetectable and untraceable firearms today by a vote of 57-39.

House Bill 1739, sponsored by Rep. Javier Valdez, D-46, would make it illegal to manufacture, buy, sell, or possess an undetectable firearm in most circumstances.

“This is a major public safety concern we know is on the horizon,” said Valdez. “Lawmakers must get out ahead of this problem before it’s too late.”

Untraceable and undetectable firearms are also referred to as “ghost guns” since they do not have serial numbers and may not contain enough metal components to be picked up by common metal detectors.

“Allowing 3D guns into our communities will fundamentally change society forever,” said Valdez. “I certainly don’t want to be on a commercial flight or at a sporting event knowing the person behind me could be carrying a plastic gun.”

There were 849 firearm deaths in Washington state in 2017, and nearly 40,000 firearm deaths nationwide, according to the CDC.

The issue of 3D guns is currently in litigation at the national level. In 2015, the Obama administration took action to prevent the online distribution of 3D gun blueprints. That action was overturned in 2018 by the current administration.

Several state attorneys general, including Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson, have sued the Trump administration in an attempt to prevent the distribution of 3D gun blueprints online.

HB 1739 will now go to the Senate for consideration. The 2019 legislative session is scheduled to adjourn for the year on April 28.

The 46th Legislative District includes Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, and northeast Seattle.

First commercial flight takes off from Paine Field on Monday morning

Paine Field and Boeing Everett manufacturing building

By Diane Hettrick

Paine Field in Everett begins commercial flights on Monday, March 4, 2019.

According to The Seattle Times, "The FAA approved plans by Alaska Airlines and United Airlines to offer a combined 24 daily departures from the two-gate terminal. The $40 million passenger terminal operated by Propeller Airports expects to see 1.4 million people each year, according to a statement from Snohomish County."

The flight path from Paine Field south tends to run in a very narrow band over east Shoreline and west Lake Forest Park. There are already many flights that run down this corridor. Many residents who live under the flight path are bothered by the noise, which can rattle windows and set off car alarms. Others, aviation buffs, say they enjoy the sound.

Most people are pleased at being able to get a flight from Everett instead of making the traffic-congested trek to Sea-Tac.

Tickets to Portland with Alaska Airlines begin at $44, while those to other locations range from $64 to $114, according to the airline’s website.

Work on Lynnwood Link could begin as early as this month

Work on the Lynnwood Link will begin very soon
Did you miss the Open House? Here is the Online open house and survey

The Lynnwood Link Extension project is breaking ground this spring. Activity will start with crews preparing work zones for construction followed by construction of light rail infrastructure beginning this summer.

The line opens in 2024 with 28-minute trips between Lynnwood and downtown Seattle, no matter how bad the traffic is on I-5.

Some of the first visible signs of this progress will come in the form of Sound Transit’s tree replacement program.

Building the mostly elevated light rail line in the public right-of-way along the east side of I-5 between Northgate and Lynnwood will entail removing approximately 4,200 trees and replacing them with approximately 20,000 trees.

As much as possible, Sound Transit will select native, adaptive plant and tree species for replacement. The agency will be planting larger trees and monitoring most of the trees for an extended period to ensure their survival.

There is no getting around the temporary changes this construction will bring.

The end result, however, will provide not only capacity to move up to 16,000 riders per hour in each direction past rising gridlock, but even greener surroundings than those that exist today.

The first work will be in the north of Shoreline

This is our moment, our climate, our mission — together, we can defeat climate change.

Award winning film RESILIENCE to show in Edmonds Tuesday

Saturday, March 2, 2019

On Tuesday March 12, 2019, 6 - 8pm, the public is invited to deepen understanding of the road to recovery for children who have faced major trauma and live with toxic stress.

This topic is the heart of a free program March 12 at Edmonds Public Library, 650 Main Street, in the Plaza Room.

The award-winning documentary “Resilience: the Biology of Stress and the Science of Hope,” by James Redford will take viewers deep into the national movement emerging this decade to deal better with adverse childhood experiences in health, education and community settings. Pediatricians, therapists and educators, using cutting edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction, and disease, share ways forward.

Two speakers will supplement the film with local realities, lead discussion and answer questions: Liza Patchen-Short, the Children’s Mental Health Liaison for Snohomish County Human Services Department, and Sadie McHatton, a public health nurse with Snohomish Health department.

The movie includes a doctor who worked with children and families after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut and the work of a former Walla Walla high school principal whose school in 2014 became known across the nation as a “trauma informed” school and who helped initiate the movement to help children become resilient again post-trauma.

This program is sponsored by the Children and Youth Committee of the Snohomish County League of Women Voters, in partnership with Sno-Isle Library, Verdant Health, and the AAUW.

History: relics of the past

Tower for air raid siren at Northacres Park

By Diane Hettrick

During the Cold War with Russia after WWII, Americans expected nuclear bombs to rain down on them at any moment.

In the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was great fear of nuclear fall out.

Air raid shelters were built and stocked and marked with the distinctive sign. Personal fallout shelters were built in basements and dug into yards. There was agonized public conversation about the moral issue of what you would do if your unprepared neighbor wanted into your shelter. Would you let them in?

Schoolchildren were taught to crouch under their desks for protection.

The whole system depended on being warned of attack, so public air raid sirens were installed and tested every Wednesday at noon.

There are relics of those days still left. Northacres Park at 127th and 1st NE in the Haller Lake neighborhood of Seattle still has the tower for the air raid siren, rusting away among the trees.

Dan Short, who photographs odd corners of Shoreline, says that "There used to be one of these sirens at the entrance road to Hamlin Park on NE 160th St. It would sound off very loudly every Wednesday at noon."

The PSSBL is comprised of 1,100 players forming 72 teams in 9 different divisions.

The divisions are organized based on age and skill level, ranging from competitive to recreational. Formed in 1989, this year marks the PSSBL’s 31st season of operation.

The 2019 tryouts will be held at
  • Interlake High School in Bellevue on Sunday, March 10th,
  • Sunday, March 17th at Russell Road Park in Kent,
  • Saturday, March 23rd at Bellevue College, and
  • Sunday, March 31st back at Interlake High School.
Tryouts are free to attend.

For more information including start times and online registration, tryout players and all interested parties are encouraged to view the PSSBL website or call 425-644-1901.

Three PSSBL-based teams won national championships last fall. The Puget Sound Reds took the 35 and Over title at the MSBL World Series in Phoenix. Both the 60 and Over and 70 and Over versions of the Washington Titans won their respective divisions at the Roy Hobbs World Series in Florida.

There are a number of ex-minor leaguers and college players in the PSSBL – even a former Seattle Mariner, but there’s also plenty of room in recreational divisions for players who haven’t picked up a baseball since Little League.

The PSSBL is well known for donating money, materials, and labor to youth and school baseball organizations around the Sound as well as other charities. This season we are assisting Thomas Jefferson High School, Bellevue College, Northwest Washington Baseball League, and the Wounded Warriors Project.

Forefront Parent Suicide Prevention education night

FOREFRONT PARENT SUICIDE PREVENTION EDUCATION NIGHT
Tuesday, March 19, 2019, 6:30 - 8pm Shorewood Library
17300 Fremont Ave N, Shoreline 98133

As our families navigate the pressures of today's world, it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. Our children are faced with numerous stresses on a daily basis -- as those stressors accumulate, the potential for suicide also increases. We want to give all parents the tools to recognize and address the warning signs of a potential crisis.

This is the second year Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools join other King County schools in partnering with Forefront Suicide Prevention, a center of experts affiliated with the University of Washington.

Our work with Forefront includes training on suicide prevention for parents and faculty, refining our crisis response plan, and expanding our curriculum on student mental health. We are very excited to have Forefront’s support and to be on the leading edge of preventative care.

The biggest protective factor is the strength of our combined community. We can all be active in supporting our young people and helping them be the healthiest they can be. Our adult training is meant to equip us with an eye for prevention across the community — looking out for our own children as well as their friends, classmates, and neighbors.

Watch this video to hear what local youth are saying about suicide prevention: King 5 News - Youth Preventing Suicide.

Our Shorecrest and Shorewood Parent Suicide Prevention Educator volunteers will provide the training and our high school counselors and administration will be available to talk further where we are in our journey in our school district and high schools.

Together, we will identify warning signs, practice reaching out to a struggling child, and understand how to access additional support when needed.

Crisis resources:
  • Call - the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255
  • Text - Crisis Text Line at 741741
  • If the person you are concerned about is in immediate danger of killing themself and/or refuses to stay safe with you, call or text 911.

Poem: Goldie the Cat

Goldie the Cat

This is the story of a cat named Goldie

An adoptable pet but in no way an oldie

Living in a room full of cats by the ton

When in came a lady just looking for one

She brought along a carrier with the door open wide

She admired all the cats but she couldn’t decide

Meanwhile Goldie made a choice of his own

He hopped in the carrier and the lady took him home

From the moment Goldie dared to leap thru that door

He had found a home that would last forever more

Dryer balls available at The Recology Store

Dryer balls replace dryer sheets
and last for years
Wish your laundry dried faster? Toss a few of these guys in your dryer (preferably 3 or more!) and reduce your drying time by up to 25%.

Dryer balls have some great functions- they reduce static, soften clothes, and reduce the time it takes to dry your clothes.

The best part is- they last for years, so you don’t need to purchase dryer sheets ever again!

If you’re looking to make your clothes smell amazing, simply sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oils on the balls in the last few minutes of drying.

We offer several types of dryer balls and essential oils, so you can pick out your favorite combo.

43 works from 32 artists were selected for the show, out of 400 submitted images.

All of the participating artists were invited to submit proposals for the special award exhibit and workshop awards, which were reviewed by the art faculty. The following artists were chosen for a special three-person award show: Tom Jensen, of Everett, Washington; Beth Kehoe, of Lake Forest Park, Washington; and Drea Frost, of Cannon Beach.
This award show will open the Royal Nebeker Art Gallery’s 2019-2020 exhibition season, and all three artists will conduct workshops in conjunction with the exhibit.
