Election results: Fire District 16

Even though these are the first reported results for the Northshore Fire issue on the special election ballot, it's safe to say that we will not need to follow the results closely.

First reported results show that 90.5% of the 4,630 ballots cast were affirmative.

The measure is a continuation of taxes already being paid by citizens of Lake Forest Park and Kenmore to support fire services in the two cities.

Northshore Fire has two stations, with the main headquarters in Kenmore, and a station in Lake Forest Park. The legal name of the district is "King County Fire Protection District No. 16" but is known as Northshore Fire.

Walk the Labyrinth at Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore Feb 19

Walk the labyrinth at Church of the Redeemer

In consideration of Mother Nature’s gift of snow, which means icy roads, the February labyrinth walk at Church of the Redeemer has been postponed to February 19, 2019, at 7:00pm.

The theme this month comes from our friends at Global Healing. The yearly theme is Intention, which starts with Attention!

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 NE 181st St, Kenmore.

Plan on joining us, weather permitting. Can’t make it? Ask for an emailed copy of the walk. Need a paper labyrinth to finger walk? Again, please ask. Send an email to labyrinth@redeemer-kenmore.org.

Why walk a labyrinth?

An ongoing practice of labyrinth walking can be an exciting and meaningful discipline. Labyrinth walking, whether on one’s feet or on a table top with a finger or stylus, can add to the journey of faith.

Labyrinths are walked for a variety of reasons. Examples include the following:
  • Listen to God.
  • Find the quiet center of one’s life.
  • Facilitate calm and stillness in a hectic world.
  • Celebrate joyful occasions and happenings.
  • Receive insights on problems.
  • Seek faithful clarity amidst life’s challenges and opportunities.
  • Seek healing for emotional and/or spiritual wounds.
  • Work on forgiveness.
  • Commemorate significant events or holy days.

Church of the Redeemer

Community life at Redeemer centers on worship in the Episcopal tradition. Art and music vitally deepen this worship. Our faith expresses itself with service to people, locally to internationally.

Church of the Redeemer is at 6210 NE 181st St in Kenmore. The campus is a short distance north of Bothell Way, near the Burke-Gilman Trail. The entrance looks like a gravel driveway. The campus is larger on the inside than it is on the outside. And, we managed to hide a large building on the side of a hill that is not easily seen from the street.

The Episcopal Church welcomes you.

Still in the dark - check on your neighbors

North end power outages at 5:40pm 2-12-19

It's never a good sign when City Light gives estimated restoration times in dates instead of hours.

There's an unfortunate number of customers on this map whose power is not expected to be restored until tomorrow 2-13-19. And a fairly large number whose estimated time still reads at 11am today.

It may be that the crews have not called in and the map is not current. For the sake of our neighbors, let's hope that's the case.

This map shows all the way to Maple Leaf, south of Northgate because there didn't seem to be a logical stopping point at our city boundaries.

The overall number of customer outages for the entire City Light area has actually gone up. I suspect that melting snow chunks are hitting and bringing down branches on the power lines. The specific number of incidents is 106 affecting from 1 to 90 customers each.

Check on your neighbors. If you go to the Seattle City Light System Status you can enlarge the map to see specific properties.

Snow plus rain presents additional hazards

8th NE between 155-160th
By jickcoem
King county emergency news

Deep snow levels, mixed with falling rain, can lead to heavy loads on rooftops and potential structural collapse or sliding snow.

While most new structures are built to withstand heavier snow loads, buildings and structures with flat roofs, such as carports, are at greater risk of collapse.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the western third of King County until 4am Tuesday, February 12.

The snow rain barrier is sticking right around Shoreline, so heavy wet snow, soaked with rain at times overnight and tomorrow.

Use caution when clearing snow

  • If a roof (whether flat or sloped) is in eminent danger of collapse, stay away from the structure and call 9-1-1 for emergency help.
  • Removing snow from your roof with a shovel can trigger unexpected snow slides causing crushing/suffocating injuries or death. Keep people and animals away from potential slide zones.
  • It is strongly recommend you not access your roof to clear snow. Climbing on a roof increases the load already stressed by the heavy snow load. The use of ladders when removing snow from your roof can pose additional hazards.
  • Consider hiring experts who have experience and specialized equipment for safely clearing snow or ice.
  • Clear any accumulation of snow around side wall vents that connect to household appliances, such as a clothes dryer.

Thanks to snow ten Shorecrest High School wrestlers qualify for Regionals and State Championships

Scot Team Photo at Wesco Districts

In one of many milestones for the Shorecrest High School Wrestling Team this year, ten wrestlers qualified for regionals at the WESCO South District Tournament last weekend. This is a first for Shorecrest High School, which has always been able to count their Regional qualifiers on one hand.

In an even stranger string of events linked to the freakish snowy weather, the regional tournament was cancelled Saturday and all ten Shorecrest High School wrestlers (and 3 additional alternates) now are scheduled to travel to the Tacoma Dome on Friday, February 15th for the Washington State Championship Tournament.

Normally, the Washington State High School Wrestling Tournament "The WIAA Mat Classic" has 16 wrestler brackets, but now with the cancellation of the regional tournament, the contest will extend two full days with 32 wrestler brackets for every weight class.

The Scot's Head Coach, Brent Busby, was ecstatic. "Shorecrest will be sending its largest contingency of wrestlers to the Tacoma Dome ever! This is all so very exciting!"

Seattle Symphony wins two Grammy awards

The Recording Academy announced today that the Seattle Symphony’s recording of Aaron Jay Kernis’ Violin Concerto, performed by violinist James Ehnes and conducted by Ludovic Morlot, has won two Grammy Awards in the classical category. The Violin Concerto, which was commissioned and given its U.S. premiere by the Seattle Symphony, received Grammy Awards in the categories of Best Classical Instrumental Solo and Best Contemporary Classical Composition.

Music Director Designate Thomas Dausgaard and the Seattle Symphony were also nominated in the category of Best Orchestral Performance for their live recording of Carl Nielsen’s Symphonies Nos. 3 and 4, on the Seattle Symphony Media label.

“Congratulations to Ludovic Morlot, James Ehnes and Aaron Jay Kernis for this exceptional new Violin Concerto, which was enthusiastically received from the first moment our audiences heard it in Benaroya Hall,” commented Seattle Symphony President and CEO Krishna Thiagarajan.
“Congratulations also to our musicians and our recording engineer Dmitriy Lipay for this immaculate recording. Commissioning new music is one of the most important things we do, and it’s incredibly heartening to see the excitement about this new concerto extend to a Grammy win.”

Thiagarajan added, “This year our orchestra was also nominated for Best Orchestral Recording for the first installment in our Nielsen cycle with our Music Director Designate Thomas Dausgaard, and we are incredibly proud to have all of these projects recognized by the Recording Academy.”

Public Works crew would like us to remember a few things

These comments are from David Baker, Mayor of Kenmore, but they apply just as well to Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

In these last few days, Public Works been running five trucks, 24 hours a day, and have plowed/sanded all Priority 1 streets multiple times. This schedule will continue into the next few days as snow continues to fall. They also made it to many Priority 2 and 3 roads and will continue to plow as many streets as possible.

However, with each wave of new snow, the crew needs to start over and focus on Priority 1 streets.

We are getting a lot of requests for roads to be sanded. Our crew continues to sand, but will stop doing so when it starts snowing again (materials and effort are wasted once snow accumulates on top).

Sanding can resume when the roads are plowed and new snow accumulation is not imminent.

Sometimes we get asked why some residential streets get plowed sooner than others. The answer is that we do follow the priority route map, but some residential streets are too steep and slippery even for our snow plow trucks. Quite often a truck will be plowing a residential street and will be pulled away due to unexpected incidents elsewhere or changing weather conditions.

So, while we have all plows out working as fast as they can around the clock, their overall progress and what residential streets get plowed and when, is not as predictable as we would like.

Arterial roads consume a lot of our crew’s attention. Did you know the City is responsible for plowing Bothell Way (SR 522) through Kenmore? Keeping this stretch of state highway clear of snow and ice is no small chore.

(LFP is responsible for Bothell Way and Ballinger Way through LFP).

WeatherWatcher: Uncertainties, Winter Storm Watch Continues

10th Ave NE, in front of Ridgecrest Elementary February 5, 2019.

The Winter Storm Watch for Monday afternoon - Tuesday afternoon remains in effect. We are under a Winter Weather Advisory until Monday at 4am.

We've already received between 2-3 inches of new snow in the Shoreline area Sunday evening. We are expecting a total of 2-4 inches before the snow showers end shortly after midnight tonight.

The next storm is expected to arrive Monday afternoon. There is much uncertainty with this storm's track, and it may bring in some warmer air in the upper atmosphere at times as it wobbles past the west coast. By Tuesday afternoon we are still expecting a storm total of 5-6 inches of new snow. It's possible to see some freezing rain, sleet, graupel or other wintery mixes at times Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

Forecast for the remainder of the week continues to have a lot of uncertainty with temperatures and snow levels. More snow showers are expected Wednesday and Thursday. There's a possibility that we will warm up briefly Thursday night and Friday for some rain, and wind. More cold arrives in the weekend though for another chance of white stuff.

I want to stress that forecast models are running with a high level of uncertainty and that anything is possible for this week. We are expected to stay cold, but some models have us on the margin of freezing, allowing for some cold rain or freezing rain at times. Other forecast models indicate we could have 20 inches of snow on the ground by Thursday.

Bottom line: Winter weather conditions are likely for at least another 5-7 days in one form or another with some possible breaks in between storms. At this point the biggest impact will be travel, especially if we get freezing rain.

Photos: Playing in the snow

Will Hall is known to have a passion for orcas, which may explain why one swam through the snow to his yard. A snorca?

Or it could be that the neighbors on his cul-de-sac had way too much fun in the snow Saturday. They built snow forts, had a few snowball fights and decided that Will really needed a small igloo in his driveway.

After all, he's not going to be driving anywhere for a couple of days.

So what do you do with an igloo in your driveway? Decorate it, of course.
