Cabin fever? A few places are open

Sunday, February 10, 2019

First it was alarming. How would you get to work? Were the schools open? Did you have enough food?

Then it was amazing and beautiful. Every tree looked like a Christmas card. Houses and streets looked like subjects for jigsaw puzzles.

Then it was fun. Saturday. A clear day. Hills to slide down. Snow figures and forts. Snowball fights.

Now you'd just really like to get out of the house.

Here are some possibilities. As always, call before you go.

  • The Local 104 on Ballinger at 35th - food and beer / wine - 206-309-4104. They closed at 9pm on Friday and closed Saturday so staff could travel safely.
  • Lake Forest Bar and Grill - Town Center LFP - Ballinger entrance - complete menu - 206-364-1261. They seem to be staying open normal hours.
  • Third Place Commons - Town Center LFP - they're down to two restaurants - Honey Bear and Burney Brothers - but there are other places to eat in Town Center like Mod Pizza, Everest Kitchen. Call first. 206-366-3302
  • Ridgecrest Public House - 5th NE and NE 165th - bring your own food - beer on tap, games, good company - 206-823-7792. Owners live within walking distance so it has been staying open.
  • The Cabin Tavern - 19322 Richmond Beach Dr NW - 206-542-1177. No idea if they are staying open. They just seem like the kind of place that would be open.

Any other neighborhood hangouts that are staying open in spite of snow?

Photos: Birds in snow

Echo Lake didn't freeze over - but might yet. The white duck is a Muscovy. The others are mallards.

Not sure what these little birds are. Frank Kleyn thinks the first one is a fox sparrow and I think the second one is a sapsucker because of the long, pointed beak.

The little bird with the berries is a perfect Christmas card with the snow and red berries and the little fat bird. The second bird has green wings. Covered with lichen like everything else around here?

Gloria Nagler thinks that this glowing golden bird on her fence is a thrush.

I'd be amazed at the variety of birds but I already know that Chris Southwick has identified over 50 different birds in her Shoreline - Lake Forest Park back yard.

Shoreline Fire on a call

By Wayne Pridemore and Diane Hettrick

Early Saturday morning there were those out in the snow who were working serving others.

WeatherWatcher: Winter Storm Watch Sunday - Tuesday Night

NE 194th St from 10th Ave NE (North City) February 9, 2019.

Our Friday afternoon through Saturday morning snow storm brought Shoreline a new snow accumulation total of between 5 to 7 inches of snow.

The winds with this storm caused snow drifts resulting in some spots getting more snow, other spots getting less snow, especially around buildings and trees. With the older 2 inches of snow left on the ground from the previous storm we probably have a total snow accumulation on the ground between 7-9 inches in most neighborhoods.

Now for round three: The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas including Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

The Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon until late Tuesday night.

I'm expecting this to turn into a Winter Weather Advisory for Sunday, and a Winter Storm Warning for Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. The National Weather Service will release updates on this likely tomorrow morning.

There are two back to back weather systems with the first one moving in Sunday afternoon. The first storm appears to be tracking south of us but close enough that we are expecting between 1 to 3 inches of new snow.

The second storm system is moving in right behind the first one and is expected to be another widespread hit. We are expecting between 5 to 8 inches of new snow with the second storm Monday into Tuesday night. There is potential for the second storm to be bigger than the Friday evening - Saturday morning storm we just experienced.

Bottom line: Total accumulation from the next two storms could be 6 to 11 inches of snow, on top of the 7-9 inches of snow we currently have. This could potentially put us at a total snow depth up to 20 inches by Tuesday night.

Dare I mention that we have another storm possible Thursday or Friday? It's too early for details right now.

Be sure to check back with www.shorelineweather.com current conditions and storm updates.

Road closures in Shoreline

Snow Event Closure Map.

This is the standard road closure map for Shoreline, marking danger spots in snow events.

If you have lived here any length of time, you already know where they are. Don't drive on Motorcycle Hill, for example. (185th at 10th NE).

You also need to watch out for skiers and sledders.

From the City of Shoreline at 10:30am Saturday

City street crews are working 12-hour shifts plowing and spreading salt and sand and are currently working on primary routes. The streets crews are being supported by staff from all City departments. Recology Cleanscapes is also providing support in transporting salt to our facilities base. Learn more about the City's response during a snow event and to see maps for the primary and secondary plowing routes at shorelinewa.gov/stormready.

If you do not need to be on the roads, please stay home. As a reminder, the City does not clear sidewalks. Shoreline homeowners and business/property owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice off driveways and sidewalks near their property. Please be careful as sidewalks can be slick.

Parks are open; however, we encourage visitors to use caution. Snow, ice, and strong winds can cause tree branches to snap. Please stay out from under trees and avoid forested park areas during the current weather conditions.

Next update will be posted at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, February 9.

Road Closures

The City has posted road closure signs on some of our known danger spots. (see map above)

These roads are also closed:
  • N 182nd St. from Evanston Ave. N to Fremont Ave. N
  • NW 204th St. from 16th Pl NW to 17th Pl NW
  • 205th St. NW from 5th Ave. NW to Ferndale Ave. NW
  • 190th Pl NW from 22nd Ave. NW to Richmond Beach Rd.
  • N 167th St. from Ashworth Ave. N and Wallingford Ave. N
  • NE 185th St. from 10th Ave. NE and 12th Ave. NE

The following are being monitored and may be closed:
  • 8th Ave. NW and NW 205th
  • 3rd Ave. NW from NW 203r and NW 205th

Rob Oxford: Pleeeease, Say It Isn't Snow?

By Rob Oxford

If Shoreline Area News' resident forecaster Carl Dinse is correct (see latest forecast), it appears as though we may be in for a "significant snow event" this coming weekend and quite possibly well beyond.

Unfortunately this is Washington State. The Puget Sound. We have Convergence Zones and Indian Summers, Lenticular Clouds and the Beaufort Scale. We also have hundreds of descriptive ways to describe the rain including: abundant, big, constant, continual, severe, deluge, downpour, driving and drizzle. Not to mention freezing and mizzle (a very fine rain). There's Scotch Mist (a mixture of mist and light rain), shower, spit, sleet, sprinkle, incessant and plenty more I assure you.

However there aren't that many ways to describe snow of which I am aware. There's powder for great skiing and wet, for snow forts and snowball fights.

Living in Shoreline for the past 20 years I've learned to not get overly excited when I hear the "S" word. As more than often the "S" word stands for "Sorry! False Alarm". But I must confess, it still makes me giddy with excitement.

Dog in Bog

As a kid living on the hill in Fife, I remember having enough snow that ours was the house where everyone came to be served hot chocolate and tube down our driveway. Then upon moving to Rochester New York in the 6th grade, we experienced one of the worst winters I can remember. Snow that measured in feet not inches for weeks at a time and still we managed to go to school.

I realize there are certainly adverse effects to unwanted snow accumulations, icy roads, power outages and school closures, to name a few. However, I also realize we live in the Pacific Northwest not the Northeast or Midwest.

But I get it, you either like snow or you don't. Personally, I LIKE SNOW!

I like to watch it fall and pile up. I like to watch kids sledding and tobogganing.

"Tobogganing"?...look it up. I like to watch cars spin out because those set on driving profess to be the only ones on the road who "know how to drive in this stuff".

Ronald Bog shelter

I of course like to do all of these things from the comfort of my living room with a fire roaring in the fireplace. What I don't particularly like is being the butt of jokes from my friends who are "Townies" from New England or "Upstaters" (residents of New York) for not being able to drive in the snow, but it does come with the territory.

Our lack of consistent yearly snowfall has prevented us from being able to adapt to such conditions. In addition, depending on where you live or work, traversing Seattle's 7 Hills can prove treacherous.

Despite its challenging topography, the fact still remains that some of us here in the Puget Sound really shouldn't be on the road when it snows. Then again, some of us shouldn't be on the road in August either.

In all seriousness, remember that a major snow event like what is forecasted doesn't happen all that often and prepare yourself. Have your Emergency Kit handy. Make sure you have flashlights, batteries and candles. Stock up on food and fill your car's tank with gas. ...Just in case you find yourself having to share the road with the "only guy in Seattle who knows how to drive in this stuff".

Finally, if you have neighbors or family members who may need extra care, now is the perfect time to pay them a visit.

Grocery stores and hardware stores cleaned out ahead of storm

North City Safeway Friday noon

The cupboards were bare at the North City Safeway grocery store on Friday as people stocked up ahead of the snowstorm. By noon the bread shelves were empty as was the dairy case for eggs.

Locals stocked up like Floridians ahead of a hurricane. Central Market, Trader Joe's, the Safeways, probably all the grocery stores had bare shelves and very long lines.

Many of the stores will restock on Saturday morning.

Gov. Inslee declared a state of emergency, but allowed trucks carrying salt and milk to work long hours. All other commercial drives were limited in the number of hours they could drive.

WeatherWatcher: Winter Storm Warning extended until 4pm Saturday

Friday, February 8, 2019

Heavy snow February 4, 2019.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has extended the Winter Storm Warning to 4pm Saturday. Previously the warning was set to expire at Noon Saturday.

  • Storm totals are expected to be around 4-6 inches, possibly as much as 8 inches for Shoreline and Lake Forest Park
  • Winds out of the North to Northeast Saturday 15-30mph with some local gusts to 45mph possible
  • Heaviest snow accumulations expected between Midnight and 8am Saturday
  • Expect bands of heavy snow to move through from south to north overnight and Saturday afternoon. There may be some short breaks in between snow bands.

A winter storm warning for snow means severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

We've already received 2-3 inches of new snow accumulation in the Shoreline and Lake Forest Park areas. Some local spots saw the snow briefly change to rain Friday afternoon before changing back to snow. Temperatures were a little warmer than expected, but are now cooling down and we are below freezing at the time that I am writing this.

The snow scene in the North City neighborhood February 8, 2019.

We'll get a short break on Sunday but temperatures will be cold, with lows in the upper teens and highs in the upper 20's or low 30's.

Monday more snow showers return, with a couple of larger snow storms possible next week.

Timing right now appears to be Tuesday morning for storm number 3, and Wednesday night into Thursday for storm number 4.

Still no sign in the next 7-14 days of a warm up.

Stay safe and I will provide more updates on this cold snap as information becomes available. For current conditions and immediate updates on warnings, watches or advisories, visit www.shorelineweather.com

WeatherWatcher: Winter Storm Warning issued

Thursday, February 7, 2019

Ashworth Ave N from Echo Lake Park, February 4, 2019.

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a winter storm warning in effect starting Friday at 12pm and ending Saturday at 12pm. In general 3-6 inches of snow is expected from this storm, but amounts can vary widely, with up to a foot of snow possible in some locations.

North winds are expected to pick up as well with wind speeds of 15-25mph and gusts to 35mph. Temperatures during the day will probably drop to the mid 20's or are expected to remain in the mid-upper 20's through the evening and overnight. Power outages are possible, but probably not going to be as widespread as with Monday's storm.

This weather system is what is considered a near perfect snow-maker for the Pacific Northwest. The latest high resolution models I've reviewed seem to consistently paint an 8-10" accumulation over Shoreline and Lake Forest Park specifically, although it varies slightly from model to model on where that narrow band hits.

The forecast still keeps a chance of snow, and a few more snow events, on the radar for the rest of the weekend and next week. Still, no sign of warming up for the extended forecast. I suspect this cold snap is going to be historic when everything is done.

I'll keep updating as new information becomes available on this storm, and the future ones on the way. For current conditions and updates, visit www.shorelineweather.com

City of Lake Forest Park - snow removal, police and public works

The City of Lake Forest Park plans to have its Public Works crew split into two-three man crews working 12 hour shifts over the weekend.

As you can imagine, there are many demands on our crews and will do their best to keep our main roads clear. As a reminder, our LFP crew, not WSDOT, is responsible for Bothell Way (SR 522) and Ballinger Way (SR 104).

Additionally, the Police Department will have staff working 12 hour shifts and they ask that once the storm hits, if you don’t have to go out over the weekend, DO NOT! For driving tips and home safety, Click Here.

During this slight weather break, it is a good time to make preparations (especially if there are medical needs) for your family, pets, and property. For more information and links on emergency preparedness, Click Here.

Again, please understand that LFP is a small city with limited resources. There will be three Public Works employees working around the clock, and the PD will have at least two, possibly three officers on around the clock. Remember to drive slow, do what you can to prepare yourself and help others. We appreciate your support and understanding!

Shoreline Public Schools on half day Friday - but check in the morning

Shoreline Public Schools

Another snowstorm is on the horizon with snow forecasted to begin accumulating tomorrow morning. Our staff has been monitoring National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) weather reports throughout the day. NOAA reports are indicating a very high confidence that our area will begin accumulating snow tomorrow morning. They have also issued a Winter Weather Watch from noon tomorrow through 6pm on Saturday with significant snow accumulation.

Considering this information, we will be having a Half Day at all Shoreline Schools tomorrow, February 8 to ensure our buses are able to safely transport students home after school.

Please note that Half Day release times are earlier than Early Release Days. You can find the Half Day release times on our website HERE

We will reassess road conditions and weather reports early in the morning and will make an additional announcement by 6:00am if a cancellation is required.

Tomorrow’s Half Day schedule means:
  • All schools will release on a Half Day schedule. You can find release times at www.shorelineschools.org/belltime
  • Zero period classes are canceled
  • No after school Extended Care
  • Out-of-district transportation is canceled
  • Transition Program will meet from 10:30-12:30
  • All WIAA athletic events will be communicated separately
  • All other school and district events and activities will be canceled Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Breakfast will be served at all schools, but no lunch at the middle or high schools
  • All partial day programs are canceled

For Edwin Pratt Early Learning Center:
  • no Early Childhood Education classes;
  • No Head Start transportation;
  • AM preschool classes run 9 - 12;
  • full day preschool classes, including Head Start, will be open until 12:30; all students must be picked up by 12:30 p.m.;
  • the Edwin Pratt Early Learning Center will close at 12:30

Please know that we do not make decisions to change our school schedules lightly. We understand the stress and strain that this can have on our families. We truly appreciate your patience and flexibility as we make these changes in the interest of student safety.

Just assume that everything's cancelled

If you were planning on going anywhere between now and Monday - just assume that it's not going to happen.

I will publish individual cancellations - many of the notices have information about rescheduling - but no matter where you were going or what we publish, check webpages or call in the morning.

That includes church. Assuming you can get there, what is the parking lot like? Is it on flat ground? Is the driveway paved? Where does the minister live?

Certainly all the gardening events are off.

For schools, check the webpage for Shoreline Community College: https://www.shoreline.edu/

If you don't get the alerts on your phone or computer, check the webpage for Shoreline Public Schools: http://www.shorelineschools.org

Right now they are planning a half day, but that could change in the morning.

Voters urged to return their February Special Election ballots early

Lake Forest Park voters:

King County Elections is urging voters to return their ballots for the February 12 Special Election as soon as possible due to inclement weather expected across the region on Election Day.

The National Weather Service is forecasting another winter storm later this week and into next week.

To avoid potential delays with the US Postal Service, voters are strongly advised to mail their ballots as early as possible or to use one of 40 ballot drop boxes open for this election.

There is a ballot drop box by LFP City Hall in Town Center 98155.

Ballots include pre-paid postage so voters do not need a stamp to return their ballots. Ballots must be postmarked by February 12 or returned to a drop box by 8pm Election Day.

Lake Forest Park Rotary Club Homeless Youth Project

The Homeless Youth Project (HYP) of the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park was formed in the Spring of 2017 after Josh Little, then the Student Services Specialist, spoke to the club about youth homelessness in the Shoreline School District.

George Piano and Jeff Weissman, with the support of club president Claire Conway, initiated the project to address the underserved homeless young people in our area. Other members are Judy Altman, Linda Holman, Norman Lieberman, and Mark Phillips.

We had two immediate goals: to educate ourselves about teen homelessness and to provide assistance to the homeless youth in the Shoreline School District high schools.

HYP members began the learning process by meeting with Cocoon House in Everett and Youth Care in Seattle, both of whose missions are to serve homeless teens.

We talked to LFP’s Vision House, Teen Link, NUHSA, Mary’s House, and the family advocates from Shorewood and Shorecrest high schools.
We explored partnering opportunities with the Shoreline Rotary, the Dale Turner YMCA, and both The Works and Embrace Shoreline Schools, Shoreline PTA affiliates that provide for students and families in need.

We sponsored Rotary coat drives in 2017 and 2018 in conjunction with The Works. On an ongoing basis, HYP provides food and transportation vouchers as well as Fred Meyer gift certificates for Shoreline students in need.

The ultimate goal is to expand available services and to establish a drop-in resource center for local homeless youth, modeled on Cocoon House’s U-Turn Drop in facility. HYP continues to work with other organizations in the LFP-Shoreline area to reach that goal.
