It's officially Fall. The rains have started - although this week is beautiful. The trees are turning fall colors.

And yet there are new flowers blooming. My yard is full of pale pink coleus, which is what I think these flowers are that Lee Lageschulte found on her walk.

I have more photos of fall flowers - watch for them in future editions.

Fresh pasta at the Shoreline Farmers Market Saturday

Shoreline Farmers Market will be at Shoreline Place every Saturday from 10am-3pm, through October 6th.

Although we are excited about the start of Autumn with cool morning breezes, cozy sweaters, and roasted vegetables, it with a heavy heart that we have only 2 markets left in the 2018 season. We've enjoyed so many wonderfully delicious goods at the market, musical talents, and meeting of friends and community.

This week NOSH continues to attend the market with their famous British style Fish and Chips, Cod Chowder, and Caprese Baguette. Our newest hot food vendor 12Spice has joined the market bringing bold Asian flavors to their cuisine. Come hungry!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR OCTOBER 6th: This will be our last market day and it coincides with Central Markets giant pumpkin competition. Are your children excited for Halloween? Kids in costume receive a FREE mini pumpkin from Central Market and we'll have a pumpkin decorating tent at the farmers market.

We hope you come out and join us in celebrating the Shoreline Community.
See you Saturday!

Resources to develop a basis of understanding for our discussion.
  • “A Beginner’s Guide to Blockchain Technology” Coindesk
  • “The Business Blockchain: Promise, Practice, and Application of the Next Internet Technology” William Mougayar
  • “Blockchain Economy” William Mougayar – Ted Talk
  • “Blockchain Revolution: How the Technology Behind Bitcoin Is Changing Money, Business, and the World” Don Tapscott, Alex Tapscott
  • “How the blockchain is changing money and business” Don Tapscott – Ted talk.
  • “Blockchain company Bitpesa wants to transform payments in Africa” Elizabeth Rossiello, Founder on CNBC
James Pauley is a retired Microsoft employee and founder of Sojourn Information Systems. He is a blockchain and crypto currency professional and consults on blockchain and cryptocurrency-based solutions for business and individuals.

Everyone is invited, there is no fee. You may RSVP at our Meetup page, but feel free to show up without registration.

The North City Tech Meetup is a free meetup, usually the first Monday of each month at one of the North End libraries: Shoreline, Lake Forest Park or Kenmore.

County Council approves funding to help individuals clean criminal records

A criminal record is major barrier for those looking to improve their lives. It can close doors if you’re looking for housing, employment or any activity that requires a background check.

State law provides opportunities for those with non-violent offenses to clear their criminal records, but for many the cost of going to court puts this option out of the reach.

The Metropolitan King County Council is now providing an opportunity for those who want to clear their records, but can’t afford the legal representation needed for the process. The council approved legislation that will provide assistance for indigent individuals to clear their records through the Department of Public Defense.

“This legislation is both a social justice and economic tool that removes a barrier preventing far too many people from improving their lives,” said Councilmember Larry Gossett, the prime sponsor of the legislation.

State law provides the opportunity for people convicted of specific misdemeanors and felonies to go to court to have their convictions vacated and their criminal records cleared. The biggest challenge for many people seeking to have this done is the cost involved.

“Lack of finances should not determine who in our community is able to access this resource,” said Councilmember Jeanne Kohl-Welles, co-sponsor of the ordinance. “This is one step that we can take to ensure all residents of King County have the opportunity to reach their full potential.”

The legislation, adopted at the council’s Sept. 24 meeting, calls for Public Defense to begin offering these services to their clients starting in 2019.

Snohomish County Council sets Oct 3 hearing date for Point Wells appeal

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

Point Wells today is an asphalt facility and oil-tank farm

The Snohomish County Council will hold a hearing on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at 1:30pm in the Council Chambers on the 8th floor of the Robert J. Drewel Building, 3000 Rockefeller Ave. in Everett.

The Council will hear BSRE's appeal of the Hearing Examiner's re-affirmation of his denial of BSRE's development application for Point Wells. (See article BSRE appeals decision of Hearing Examiner)

BSRE will have 20 minutes to present their arguments, then the public will have three minutes each to make their comments.

If the Council upholds the Hearing Examiner's denial, the next level of appeal will be to Superior Court where only BSRE and the County can present arguments.

The Sno-King Environmental Coalition, a local group opposing the Point Wells development, plans to have residents there to offer comments, and point out the issues with the development.

They said, "We think it is important that our neighborhood be heard before the Council makes its decision.
"We think the most likely outcome is that the Council will re-affirm the Hearing Examiner's decision, but that's not a guarantee."

Issues with the Point Wells development include height of the buildings, proximity to the high water mark, building in front of a landslide area, transportation and roads to and from the site. (See article Hearing Examiner rejects most of BSRE's motion to reconsider Point Wells project.)

Charges state Hall asked a juvenile client to lay his head on a pillow in Hall’s lap while Hall touched the client’s torso and head. Buskers Day at the LFP Farmers Market on Sunday, 9/30

Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Last year’s Buskers Day was a hit, so the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market is doing it again! This coming Sunday, September 30th, the market will feature three knockout talents who will entertain you with a musical journey both unexpected and thrilling.

Presented each Sunday by Third Place Commons, the LFP Farmers Market always welcomes terrific local buskers who regularly drop-in to fill the market with great acoustic music. But for one day only, the market is turning up the microphone and shining the spotlight on some truly talented and accomplished musicians who will knock your socks off with their musical chops.

The market will open with the gifted indie singer/songwriter Abby London from 10 to 11am. A classically trained musician with an ear for everything from pop, rock, and hip hop to folk and show tunes, Abby’s sound is reminiscent of revered icons like Regina Spektor and Ani DiFranco. But as you’ll see and hear, with her clever lyrics and unique perspective, Abby is an original unto herself.

PK Dwyer, blues busker extraordinaire, takes the mic from 11:30am to 1pm. PK is credited as the first person ever to busk at Pike Place Market, and ten years later he won the First Annual Street Performers Competition in Paris. He has continued playing hard ever since! PK has made a lifelong career as an esteemed street performer and still plays about 300 dates a year, dazzling folks with his virtuosity and high energy originals. Be sure to stop by and see what all the fuss is about!

Finally, the day will wrap up from 1:30 to 3pm with the dreamy, ethereal beauty of electric cellist Gretchen Yanover. A classical musician by training, Gretchen discovered “a new voice for her instrument” with the introduction of a loop sampler. Gretchen builds hypnotic melodies and atmospheric landscapes right before your eyes that will captivate your heart and fuel your imagination. She’s too good to miss!

All three of these musicians are unique and gifted performers who will delight and inspire with their fabulous music. So when you see them and love them (and you will!), be sure to tip them!

They also all have music for sale on their websites, so when you head home from the market, you can download their great music to enjoy again and again.

So don’t miss the fun at the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, this Sunday (and every Sunday through October 21st) from 10-3pm in the parking lot of the Lake Forest Park Town Center at 17171 Ballinger Way NE.

See you at the market!

Notes from Shoreline City Council meeting 9-24-18

2018 Shoreline City Council
Mayor Hall opened the meeting at 7:00pm. Councilmember McConnell was not present for personal reasons and was excused.

The City Manager’s report stated Saturday's City Welcoming Event was well attended and Sunday’s Under Our Skin discussion on race and inclusion will be repeated on December 1st.

Upcoming events include the 175th Street Pavement meeting and the PRCS/Trees meeting both on September 27th, and a Sound Transit community meeting on October 17th. Details are available on the City’s website.

The Agenda and Consent Calendars were approved unanimously. There were no public comments.

Two Action Items were on the Agenda. Both had been Discussion items at the September 10, 2018 council meeting. Prior to each each discussion, Councilmembers were reminded to reveal any ex parte communications.

Adopting Ordinance No.836 - Rezone at 922 N 200th Street

This involves changing the zoning from R12 to R24. Since there were no issues brought up at the 9/10 meeting, a very brief Staff report summarized the rezone. After noting the revised zoning was consistent with adjacent properties, the action was adopted unanimously.

Adopting Ordinance No. 837 - Rezone at 17127 and 17201 15th Avenue NE and 17414 and 17062 12th Avenue NE

This proposal would change zoning from high density residential (R24, R28) to Community Business (CB), a commercial zone. If a rezone is granted, the Applicant currently intends to redevelop portions of the area to accommodate senior housing, assisted living, and nursing care, which would be allowed in the CB zone.

Zoning changes do not require that specific plans for the properties be identified. This ordinance was the subject of several questions by Council at the 9/10 meeting. The Staff presentation was a quick summary of the 30 page Staff Report, including attachments, that responded to the questions. Some Councilmembers still had concerns about traffic interruption on 15th, and the transition between residential and potential 60’ commercial buildings. The action was passed 4 to 2.

The agenda was completed, and the meeting was adjourned at 7:36 pm.

Dahlia of the Week: AC Rooster

Monday, September 24, 2018

AC Rooster dahlia

By John Hibbs, ND

With the Fall Equinox our dahlia season is in its last lap. October is always a question mark, but as long as the nights stay mostly above 50ºF and it doesn’t get too wet they can bloom till November. Here’s another great flower for you - the AC Rooster!

I’ve said before that I love dahlias that look like their names, and AC Rooster describes this blossom perfectly. With the bright color of rooster comb on each petal’s topside and a paler value of same on the underside, the lengthwise folding of petals to narrow backcurving points also evokes rooster tail. In the dahlia world this is called the Stellar form, and AC Rooster is a classic. His flowers spread 5-6”, officially size BB or Small.

He was first introduced to dahlia lovers in 2010 by the Puget Sound’s own Ken Greenway and has won awards and hearts. The plant blooms robustly, producing many blossoms on very long strong stems on which the flowers sit uprightly, thus looking like a proud strutting rooster. The flowers last well in a bouquet.

AC Rooster dahlias

AC Rooster tubers are somewhat difficult to find, but a few dahlia distributors in the PNW still carry them. And I’ll have them in Spring 2019 at the Dahlias for Seniors tuber sale on the second Tuesday in May.

Meanwhile the 2018 Dahlias for Seniors fundraiser continues and you can purchase AC Rooster blossoms in a bouquet at the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center (18560 1st Ave NE, Shoreline 98155) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after about 10:30am.

And at the Ridgecrest Public House (520 NE 165th St, Shoreline 98155) Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays shortly after opening.

Beach orcas stolen - again

Stolen orca #1
Once again, two of our beloved Beach Orcas were stolen, this time from Kayu Kayu Ac Park.

The individual(s) that made the decision to steal from our Richmond Beach community may be rethinking that decision in the light of day; and since this is a "small town" of caring and concerned neighbors who love to talk, it is unlikely that this theft will go unsolved for long.

Since these are considered a valuable piece of commissioned art, if the orcas are not returned, we will have no choice but to move forward with an investigation, police involvement and potential subsequent charges.

Before we start down that path, we would like to offer a “no-questions-asked” drop off of the orcas regardless of their current condition. Please deliver our orcas to the Richmond Beach Library by Friday, Sept. 28.

Stolen orca #2
We have been overwhelmed by the community response to the orcas -- how much they are enjoyed, how everyone looks forward to their return in the spring and how protective folks are of them. We have only had one other theft, which ended with that person making the right decision.

Once again, we are saddened for all concerned--the artists who created these orcas, the community that paid for them and the folks, especially the children, who delight in them.

Let’s work together, hold out for someone to do the right thing again this time and keep our Beach Orcas from becoming an endangered species.

Please contact RBCA Executive Director Sheri Ashleman at execdirector@richmondbeachwa.org or (206) 542-9147 with information relating to the missing orcas.
