What parents need to know about ADHD

Thursday, September 20, 2018 Dr. Harlan Gephart, What parents need to know about ADHD
Eastside CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder)

We welcome Dr. Harlan Gephart who will bring us the latest need-to-know information about ADHD. Dr. Gephart, a very experienced developmental pediatrician who has evaluated, treated individuals, and provided support and education for those with ADHD in the greater Seattle area, speaks to us in our first meeting in our new space on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Dr. Gephart is a UW School of Medicine Emeritus Clinical Professor. Dr. Gephart continues to train the next generation of pediatricians through the Reach Institute. We celebrate the publication of his new book about ADHD to be published this September.

Dr. Gephart will speak about the comprehensive nature of ADHD and its effects upon so many aspects of life. Dr. Gephart will explain how he talks about ADHD to patients of different age groups and to their parents. He will also explain how parents can talk with their children at different points in development so that they really understand what ADHD is to enlist them in their own self-care.

When parents understand ADHD, they are more able to effectively have a meaningful conversation with their kids to allow them to be good self-advocates and treatment partners with their doctors, their teachers, and their peers.

New location: Boys and Girls Club of Bellevue
209 100th Ave NEBellevue 98004Room-(2nd Floor)
Time: 6:45pm to 9pm

Op-Ed: Help students by volunteering in STEM and the Shoreline Fair

Ray Koelling wears his Shoreline STEM Festival shirt proudly
By Ray Koelling

It was with disappointment, tempered by a bit of eternal hope that things would change, that I read of the possible shutting down of the Shoreline STEM Fair.

Ask anyone in any STEM profession; aeronautical engineer, research scientist, science or math teacher, surgeon, laboratory tech, salmon geneticist, chemist or 1,000 others I could list.

It is rightfully accepted as near axiom by those in the profession or those in the know that in general, students cannot shun STEM in K-12 and suddenly think about it for college or a profession. It is then too late. There is too much competition in the 21st century from other students in grades K-12 who have already spent those years expanding and honing a curiosity, creativity, love of STEM.

From its inception, the fair that I started has had the support of legislators from the 32nd and 46th. Great STEM teachers at LFP, Kellogg and Shorecrest helped my son along on his way to an M.S. in Aeronautical Engineering and were supportive of the STEM fair. And volunteers were always there.

At the Eastern Washington Regional Science and Engineering Fair that I started two years ago, we have the support of 35 teachers from 20 schools, the Spokane School Board and even ESD101. Along with the invaluable volunteers. And it is growing.

The result here has been six high school students who have each won all-expenses paid, 6-day trips to the International STEM competition to compete against 1,800 students from 80 countries and regions.

In addition, between our regional, state and international competitions we have seen our students receive tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships, cash awards from NASA, cash awards from hospitals and watched scores upon scores of kids head to college with bright, stable, lucrative STEM careers ahead of them.

That STEM wave is all around Shoreline. Don’t let many of the kids of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park be drowned out of their futures by that wave. At Bremerton where I am still on the Board of the State Science and Engineering Fair, each year we award over 1.5 million dollars in scholarships, cash, travel and other awards to 600 kids from all over the state.

Shoreline and Lake Forest Park students need to get in there and be a part of it. Competing students are from Mountlake Terrace, Seattle, Renton, Kitsap and many districts, both larger and smaller than Shoreline and from all over the state.

Last May, when I took four Eastern Washington students to the Internationals, Dhruik Parilkh from Jackson High right there in Mill Creek took home $58,000 dollars for his project that was second place in the world.

I urge some of you to step up on September 17th and volunteer. (See previous article: Will there be a 2019 STEM Festival)

It is not that much time in the context of a life when you consider the help it would bring to students.

This flailing, stumbling and increasingly toxic world needs a more STEM educated public and citizenry.

We ourselves have done a poor job in taking care of our environment and world. Kids who are students right now will be the (hopefully) more informed public and citizenry in the future than we have been in the past. But they need to start now.

Help students by volunteering in STEM and the Shoreline Fair. Don’t ignore the students of STEM who are the future of society and our world simply for a lack of a short time commitment in the present.

Shorecrest soccer standout scores goal in her first collegiate game

Maggie Taylor scores a goal in St. Michael's
game against Northern Vermont University-Lyndon
When high school students graduate, many of them go on to college. Some stay close to home, while others scatter to the four winds.

One such recent grad who has traveled far is Maggie Taylor, Shorecrest class of 2018.

Taylor played four years of soccer for Coach Mindy Dalziel and the Scots, and she is continuing her playing career at far away St. Michaels College, in picturesque Colchester, Vermont, population 17,000.

With an enrollment of 2,000 undergrads, St. Mike’s is just north of Burlington, a stone’s throw from Lake Champlain.

In her first game for the Purple Knights last week, Taylor scored her first collegiate goal, and added an assist for good measure.

Afterward, Taylor said “I am having so much fun and the team is amazing - super supportive and a good environment. It’s a lot harder than I expected but a lot more rewarding”.

She is majoring in Political Science and Business.

Maggie is the daughter of Pat and Tina Taylor, who live in Lake Forest Park.

Find new artwork and old favorites at Edmonds Art Studio Tour Sept 15-16

Morning light by Janis Graves
The Edmonds Art Studio Tour will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15-16

Each artist preparing for the Edmonds Art Studio Tour in September is excited about new work to be unveiled during the event, as well as old favorites they’ll have available for their fans and collectors.

Oil and pastel artist Janis Graves will be showing her new small floral paintings on textured surfaces.

“I will also have some new pieces from my trip to a working cattle ranch in Colorado,” she said. For those who love her past work, she promises to have a selection of her vibrantly life-like animal paintings and soothing still life pieces.

Better Days Ahead by Andy Eccleshall
Landscape painter Andy Eccleshall has “a new show at Cole [Gallery in Edmonds] opening around the same time as the Tour, so there will be a few pieces from the new collection in the studio.”

Not as large as his typical works, these pieces will offer collectors with smaller display areas a chance to find just the right painting. He will also have some discounted older works available.

Jewelry maker Ellen Chappelle is enjoying “reimagining age-old chainmaille patterns into modern, delicate designs.” She is also creating smaller versions of her intricate, special-occasion wire-wrapped pieces designed for everyday wear. And for the animal lovers who mourn past pets, she continues to create “custom glass pendants and ornaments with their furry friends’ ashes fused inside.”

Bracelet by Meredith Arnold
Designing jewelry of a completely different style, mixed media artist Meredith Arnold has developed a method for making lightweight, dichroic-looking jewelry using polymer clay instead of glass. And as always, she will have a wide variety of earrings available. “Earrings are a great way to try some new designs,” she said.

Representational artist Angela Bandurka is planning “to feature some works on paper in charcoal at this year’s Tour, work that has never been publicly displayed before.” She will also show her sketchbooks, in which she plans her paintings.

The free, annual, self-guided Edmonds Art Studio Tour provides an exclusive glimpse into 15 private art studios showcasing the work of 30 local artists. The Tour offers patrons an opportunity to meet professional artists, see how they create their work, and purchase pieces directly from the makers. Studios will be open from 10am to 5pm both days. Sept 15-16

Visit the Tour’s mobile-friendly website at EdmondsArtStudioTour.com to preview the participating artists and their work, download a map of participating studios, and find links to each artist’s website.

Report from Shoreline council meeting Sept 10, 2018

Shoreline City Council
By Pamela Cross

The September 10th Shoreline Council meeting was primarily clean up work which is a nice way to ease back into a busy schedule after a two week summer break.

Public comments covered three issues. (1) Family and friends of the two young men who died in the motorcycle accident on 205th two months ago, requested the City consider the installation of a permanent memorial at the intersection where the accident occurred.

(2) A Lynnwood man complained of Shoreline traffic police targeting drivers on Aurora for using the bus lane. Specifically, he was northbound on Aurora intending to turn right on 200th, but was cited $138 for not turning at 198th which he said is an entrance to an apartment. He felt improved signage was needed.

(3) The final speaker cautioned the City to not duplicate activities already provided by the YMCA when the new $82M Rec Center is designed.

The Consent Calendar was unanimously approved.

There was one Action Item: bringing the Shoreline Municipal Code into adherence with the Association of Washington Cities Business License Model. After a few questions, the Ordinance was unanimously approved.

There were three Study Items.

Prior to the discussion of each item, Mayor Hall asked all Council members if they had any ex parte communications regarding the item about to be studied. This would include any communication with just one council member present. Examples given were personal emails, conversations, postings on social media such as NextDoor or Facebook, or yard signs. Council members were then asked if they simply viewed or heard comments, or whether they engaged with the other party, and if they felt such communication would affect their opinion of the item to be studied. Some Council members stated they had viewed but not engaged in such communications and this would not affect their opinion.

Study item 9a-1 discussed the rezone at 922 N 200 Street from R-12 to R-24 (Ordinance 836). Because there had already been a hearing, there was no additional discussion. A brief Staff report was followed by unanimous approval to move this to an Action item.

Study time 9b-1 discussed the rezone at 17127 and 17201 15th Ave NE, and 17414 and 17062 12th Ave NE (Ordinance 837). This is a zoning change for planned Senior Housing. There was a brief Staff presentation followed by some discussion. It was agreed the zoning change was in compliance with the Comprehensive Plan. Some of the questions could not be answered by Staff because of the timeline. That is, the developer first applies for the zoning change based on a preliminary design plan for the property. Questions regarding details of the design of the future development could not be answered because the developer would not move forward with a finalized plan until the zoning made the design feasible. Apart from that, Council’s concerns included the transition in height from current buildings to the proposed design. There is a change in topography that may increase the impact of increased height. Additionally the Hearing Examiner had made an unusual note that attention should be paid to regulatory requirements. No additional detail was provided and Staff was asked to see if they can identify an area of concern. Unless the “regulatory requirement” applies to rezoning, Staff may be unable to address this until the design stage. The Council agreed on the importance of more Senior Housing in Shoreline but did want to know if there would be any significant impact on traffic on busy 15th Ave NE.

The final Study Item was the Residential Survey results. This survey has been completed every other year since 2004 by ETC Institute that specializes in public entities. They received great public response to the questionnaires. They send out questionnaires to random households, equally distributed throughout the City, with a target response from 800 households. Shoreline residents returned 1,024. Volunteered questionnaires are not included in the results. Overall results continue to be favorable in nearly every area. Residents’ target the following for improvement: police, travel time within the City, sidewalks, and prescription drug abuse and addiction. Shoreline shines compared on a national level. Full results will be posted on the City of Shoreline website.

Pagans, Witches, Earth-Based Ceremony for the Salish Sea Day of Action Saturday

Salish Sea Day of Action, Saturday, September 15

From 350 Seattle

On Saturday, September 15, 2018 concerned community members will gather around the region to celebrate our interdependence with the Salish Sea. Currently at profound risk from multiple fossil fuel projects, existing pollution, warming waters, and ocean acidification, the Salish Sea is experiencing plummeting salmon populations and starving orcas — so from Vancouver BC to Olympia WA, 30 actions on both sides of the border will advocate for protection for the bioregion.

In Shoreline, Pagans, Witches, Earth-Based Ceremony, Salish Sea Day of Action Dancing, drumming and ceremony to send love to the Salish Sea. Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, 2021 NW 190th St, Shoreline 98177 11am – 3pm.

“In the 163 years that settlers have occupied this land, we have seen the nearly complete decimation of land and sea creatures in the Salish Sea bioregion. Those most affected are the killer whales and salmon-- who are an indicator the health of all the other species.
"Fossil fuel projects and corporations of all kinds contribute to pollution, to climate change and ocean acidification. Our own sewers empty into the water, along with pesticides and fertilizers. What we do to the water, we do to the land, we do to the people,” says Pamela Cəlálakəm Bond, (Snohomish).

“What concerns me about what is going on right now with the Coast Salish sea is the same thing that has been concerning my people for hundreds of years. It is the disrespect, the utter and complete lack of respect for our brothers and sisters in the sea and for the sea itself. They see it as something disposable,” adds Kayah George, Tsleil-Waututh First Nations member.
